Grabbing some Taco Bell is an easy task for most Americans but for the residents of Bethel, Alaska it is a four hour journey to the nearest town. Needless to say, most people in Bethel were super-excited when signs popped up announcing that a Taco Bell was coming to their town this July.

Alas, it was all a hoax and Bethel’s taco dreams came to an abrupt halt. But there is more to the story.

What does a Michelin-starred chef who's spoken of in such terms as "[might be] the best chef in New York" and "one of the most controversial cooks in town" eat when he's away from his kitchen?

Last night, Paul Liebrandt, subject of director Sally Rowe's new documentary "A Matter of Taste" stepped away from the SXSW fray to chow at Lockhart, Texas stalwart Black's Barbecue. While Liebrandt is known for his artful, on-the-edge cuisine at his New York City restaurant Corton, today, he's not in pursuit of the hautest bites in town. He's hungry for one thing: a really good taco.

Many of us grew up eating out-of-the-Ortega-box shells and spent our pocket change on cheapo "seasoned beef" at Taco Bell. We never dreamed that there was a whole flavor world beyond neon cheese and shredded iceberg lettuce.

Taco trucks and blogs abound around the country, but unless you take a step away from the chains, you're never going to know what deliciousness awaits just over the border.

And yes, I do assert that Tacos Nuevo Mexico is my favorite taqueria in all the land - and Top Chef's Bryan Voltaggio didn't hate it one bit. Don't knock it 'til you've tried it - but also, school me on your favorites. We'll share a list in a future post.
