Seventeen people in five states have been sickened by E. coli after eating clover sprouts, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
That's up from the 10 cases reported by the CDC in late May.
No deaths have been linked to the E. coli outbreak, the CDC says, but nearly half of those sickened were hospitalized. Three cases were identified in Idaho, one in Michigan, two in Montana, one in Utah and 10 in Washington state.
The CDC said the source of the E. coli outbreak is likely Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, LLC of Idaho. Twelve of the patients whom health officials interviewed reported eating raw clover sprouts from the company in the week before they became ill.
Evergreen owner David Scharf told CNN affiliate KREM-TV that U.S. Food and Drug Administration tests from his farm came back negative for the strain of E. coli involved in the outbreak.

Why sprouts can make you sick
Hummus, dips, walnuts recalled
Homegrown lettuce – hold the E. coli
This is the year you garden
I sprout my own sprouts. Yes, there could be a problem but at least I'll only be blaming myself. AND I know what kind of precautions I take.
Has anyone at the CDC taken a look at Jimmy Johns AGAIN-Anyone ?? crickets…..
Aw crap! Just ate there yesterday. They were out of crickets.......
Another reason not to eat those disgusting things.
Leave the clover for the rabbits.
Aw c'mon. That pic doesn't look like wiggly white worms with green heads and brown, uh, leftovers at all! Go ahead. Snack on a handful.
Blech! Clover, bean, alfalfa.....they're all gross.
Is it the texture, the flavor? Just curious.
Ever tried wheat grass juice?
Definitely the taste. Tastes bitter to me, especially bean sprouts.
That's a negative on the wheat grass juice. Is that the nasty looking green stuff at juice/health bars?
I don't know about nasty looking, but it's a ... unique flavor. If you licked the bottom of your lawn mower, minus the metal & oil flavors, that's exactly what wheat grass tastes like. I was doing a shot of it each day for about 2 years. You get used to that "fresh grass clippings" flavor after about 4 shots.
Now THAT'S what I want to do. Lick my lawnmower indeed.......
Helluva description though :)
I have yet to try wheat grass, so no opinion on that one, but I love broccoli, daikon/radish, and clover sprouts. And mung bean sprouts in stir fries. I mostly grow my own (except the mung bean ones, since i cook those).
You've got a dandelion growing out of your ear…..
But there are so many different flavors of sprouts! You can sprout beans, seeds, nuts...some are quite sharp tasting and others are mild. :) I know it's not for everybody, but getting a kit and doing it yourself is so much less expensive and less dangerous for contamination than buying them in a store.
I use products from sproutpeople dot org.
