National donut day

There's a hole lotta happy going on. The first Friday in June is National Donut Day!

Started by the Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938, the day honors the Army’s ‘Donut Lassies’ who served treats and provided assistance to soldiers on the front lines during World War 1. (And this isn't to be confused with National Doughnut Day, which is in November and celebrates the actual food.)

Doughnuts have been around since long before the First World War, and we have the Dutch to thank for them. The Dutch would make "olykoek," which translates to oily cake. The first Dutch doughnuts didn’t have a hole, but they were fried in hot oil and the dough was sweet.

It wasn’t until 1847 that then 16-year-old Hanson Gregory claims he created the holed-out doughnut we know and love today. Sick of doughnuts with a raw center, he used a pepper pot to punch out holes to help his doughnuts cook more evenly. By 1920, Adolph Levitt, a Russian living in New York, had invented a doughnut machine. Thirteen years later, doughnuts were proclaimed the “Hit Food of the Century of Progress” by the World’s Fair in Chicago.

This fried confection comes in so many flavors you’re sure to find one you love. What’s your favorite type and equally importantly - how do you spell it, and what do you drink with it?

The more colorful and the more sprinkles, the better. Another great site for things similar is http://www.tipsonevents.com

yep. it's a drag. palm oil. Although Dunkin has committed to using sustainable palm oil by 2015. Palm oil is in 50% of our products. I don't know how to completely avoid it - but a donut isn't worth it, at least to me.

No. Bad stuff. Palm oil industry is bad news for the jungle, tigers and orangutans. I can find other junk to eat.

I am a fitness fanatic. I workout six days a week and eat healthy with every meal. I still had a donut today. It is not disgusting to have a donut every once in a while. People need to get over this over-zealous idea that if someone has one unhealthy thing to eat that they are going to blow up and get fat. We all need to have things that we enjoy and bring us happiness and if that is a donut, then we should not castrate anyone for enjoying that one thing. It is their right and I hope everyone who can, has a donut today.

It is not just one donut, people won't stop at one donut or just one day. It is the perception that counts, when you have a national donut day it makes people think it is okay to eat donut and they keep eating and eating and eating.......

Not everybody has a self control as good as you

May was national salad month. MONTH. Maybe that celebration motivated some people to eat more salads than usual. Most likely it didn't have a long term effect on anyone. I doubt a national donut day will epically change anyone's lives.

Are you also against medicaid for low income families who continue to procreate? (I will not say whether I am or not, but to blame high costs of healthcare on donut day, without taking into account the plethora of other factors, some sensitive political issues, is ludicrous).

        Relax, Tony....have a donut

Junk food, junk food, no wonder Americans are so fat, they even celebrate junk food! I can foresee the collapse of America because of health care expense.

People who call other people names are. . .Actually, the advertisement really is disgusting. And the poster has a right to their opinion.

Greg equally has a right to believe that the original poster is, in fact, an idiot

Nope. The sense of entitlement and political correctness will be our downfall. Get rid of obesity and there will still be health issues overwhelming this country. I can't think of one country that doesn't have a flaw in it's health system. Japan is struggling with it's lack of doctors, and those folks live to see 114 years old.

National Doughnut Day began in 1938, well before D Day. It is honored the first Friday of June, not necessarily June 6th. In fact, National Doughnut Day has its roots in supporting soldiers, as it was established by a military doctor specifically to signify the efforts of the Salvation Army during World War I in providing baked goods to wounded soldiers. Although doughnuts are not a healthy food, there is nothing wrong with responsibly enjoying one or two of them, especially if you are a wounded soldier in need of a pick-me-up.

I do love doughnut holes but my all time favorite is a fresh hot krispy kreme with a slice of american or cheddar cheese melted on top. Don't ask just try it! I swear it is awesome!

This is so disgusting... who had the bright idea to celebrate this junk food day on the same day we celebrate the sacrifice of so many brave men?
