You may inadvertently be getting more than you bargained for when you put paprika in your chicken paprikash.

A new Food and Drug Administration report, "Pathogens and Filth in Spices," says that 12% of U.S. spice imports are contaminated with bug parts, rodent hairs and other ingredients more appropriate to a witches' brew than your mother's favorite recipe.

The FDA study also found that 7% of spice imports the inspectors examined were contaminated with salmonella. Salmonella are toxic bacteria that can trigger diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.

The amount of "filth" the FDA found in imported spice was twice that found in other kinds of imported food. The report characterized this as a "systemic challenge."

The agency conducted the research to figure out what kind of risks the contamination poses to the American public and what the FDA can do to lower any kind of health risks.

yes eaten bugs, esp if you've ever eaten bread made in the US. There is even a gov spec for amount of rat shit per slice so to speak.

Imagine going into a field of wheat and cutting a ton of it without trapping a bug in it. You can't imagine that, no bugs I mean.? That means you are smart and not some news idiot hoping to increase ad revenue.

Of course there is "filth" in spices and herbs. It is, after all, leaves, flowers, and seeds, bulk picked, dried in the open for the most part, and then packed. Bugs are in and on it when picked and more as it dries. Rats run over it as it dries. It is what it is. Leave American grown and packed grain, flour, and corn meal in the package for an extra long period of time and see what happens. The bug eggs hatch out and the weevils start eating the grain. I have traveled around the world much of my adult life and only God knows what I have eaten. I remain healthy and active at 72, filth, rot, and strangeness not withstanding.

such comments make me suspect leftists must be Jr. high morons. Why don't you grow up, start a business, create some economy, be responsible and then you'll change your attitude about taxing the S#i! out of everybody so morons in DC can blow your $ on mostly stupid crap. Obama and his political philosophy is a joke. its based on resentment & has no foundation built upon justice. I was poor, not given handouts, and i WORKED to become successful. All he & those like him ever did was bum money from unions et al which is why he can't get along with anybody who doesn't kiss his ass: he never had to please a customer, get along with other partners or be accountable. what a loser, our country suffers greatly under this worse ever president and the liberal biasly educated masses.

Unless it's regulated and sold legally you never know what extra filth you're getting in your MJ. Plus the filth you have to go through to buy it.
