As Paula Deen's home-goods empire unravels, companies making or distributing her products - everything from pots and pans to dishes and scented candles - may be left with a messy situation of their own.
Several large stores, including the world's largest retailer Wal-Mart, announced last week that they would stop selling Paula Deen products. Target, Home Depot, Sears, J.C. Penney and QVC also said they would discontinue her merchandise.
This puts suppliers of Paula Deen merchandise in a difficult spot, said industry experts. They may lose large, lucrative contracts with some of the nation's biggest stores that were buying her goods. They could also get stuck with lots of unsold Paula Deen merchandise that's still sitting in their warehouses and factories.
"The suppliers will feel the real impact of her brand being dropped," said Marshal Cohen, chief retail analyst with market research firm NPD Group.

I used to be sure the fact almost any really should not be skin, a result of the tatto ink might be attracted through the human body. make an own non permanent tattoo
How come Paula Deen admitted she used the N-word 30 years ago and gets dropped like a hot potato by Target, Walmart, The Food Network, Sears, and others but liberal Alec Baldwin goes on a homophobic gay rant on twitter last week and gets off with hardly a scratch?
Equality for all? Liberalism is such a self-serving sham of an ideology.
Everyone on the blogs seems to be supporting Deen, regardless of their politics or race. I have not heard anyone come out against her. Who is asking for her head or is this just a big dumb knee-jerk reaction. Maybe everyone should just say they're sorry and move on.
In the fight against Deen's supposedly racism, I wonder how many black people are now unemployed because of the Paula Deen boycott to show support for black people.
I will probably go out of my way to buy at least one Paula Deen item. I will not judge someone on the basis of what they said years ago.
The lady has been the victim of the "hitch-hunt media" lunacy and we're supposed to feel sorry for the clueless retailers that helped slander her? Get real.
I doubt that they're gonna lose much money on this issue. All that inventory will sold somehow, either discounted in stores or sold off by some group/company that will find a way to move them. IF she doesn't make a comeback, people will probably see some of this stuff as collector's items.
I don't remember them boycotting Dave Chapell. Double standard?
I don't see them taking rap cd's off the shelves that say the N word and talk violence towards cops and white people! Double standard! When knee grows do it it's ok?
And Quentin Tarantino's movies, it's a double standard that he can make movies with the N word like Django and Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs.
Was there this much media attached to John Mayer's use of the N word in his Playboy interview?
I have already reduced my purchases at Walmart ,and I plan to buy anything I can afford With a Paula Deene name on it"s my money and I get to decide how I spend it. I represent a desired economic demographic and it is time to stand up to anti-white racism .
Buy NO crap with a celebrity's name attached to it, sewn onto it or named after it.
It is a farce.
Some outfit more or less "leases" the name - the name is licensed - and what you are getting is a generic product with a famous person's name on it.
David's has been doing this for years: they license the Oleg Cassini name; it's a plain ole "no name" gown and now has a licensed name attached to it.
By no means does the Cassini atelier design any of those gowns.
Let the buyer beware.
I don't tend to buy "product" with famous people's names on them, anyway. Well I do have a George Foreman grill, but that was when what was available in that category had his name on it, and was available to buy in my local (now defunct) Linen's n Things. But, generally, it's all generic stuff with a name on the packaging. Sure, they(the names) get royalties over it, but maybe retailers will stop being so quick to plaster names over everything. PS, last I looked which was a couple days ago, Random House was still selling Paula's older books online. So, they're still reaping a profit on her.
Just checked. Random House is INDEED still selling her older cookbooks. Hard to strip a name off a book, like you can off a product. (And people are flocking to buy her Random House books... she does have earlier publishers...)
America is super fat. Just got back from Europe and I was shocked when I got back. All the fat people we have in America. Asians are generally leaner than the black folks and Latino people are also chubby. The obise people should pay much more for health insurance and plane tickets. America produces and sells crappy food in stores except Whole Foods. Dunken Donates, Mac Donalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Subway sandwitches should be eliminated in the USA and the world.
Did you pass grammar in school, or did you drop out in the 3rd grade? You sound FOOLISH !!
The food she prepares is leading to obisety. Look at people in the South, fat and more fat. They are a disgrace to America and cause a big problem for our healthcare costs. I say drop her and fast. Tell her to loose weight because she is a fat dudu.
Learn how too spell correctly before you post, its obesity....you are a total IDIOT !!
Don't you mean it's, grammar police?
Truth hurts...when given facts return insults.
OMG! you mean those Sara Swan pink tennies with the citesy wootsy little butterfly decorations that were guaranteed to be the real thing for only 999.00 are cheap knockoffs???? and the rest of my walmart endorsed NFL,NHL,NBL, GTH, and WTH collection is also just a licenseing deal and none of it's real???????? OMG! I am gonna die. I can't believe I spent all this money thinking that my favorite porn stars were really endorsing all this stuff...... I am gonna go cry now........waaaaaaaa
Tough for the retail industry?
If you know how retail runs, right about now is when the consolidation and shipping for the holiday season begins.
Probably starting to ship all the Holiday stuff....right after they ship the Halloween candy - yep, in July. That's how retail runs: 2 seasons ahead.
Fliers and circulars featuring Deen's products will need to be redesigned. Promotional material for Deen: probably will be discarded, if her product line is being discontinued. That will have to be written off as a loss, along with her cookware.
Is it a loss?
Not really - it's all crap made overseas...as usual.
the media has abused it's power again. The reaction is way over the top. Advertiser and merchants made a poor business
move. More people support Paula than oppose her. They have made the race problem worst
A good dozen years back, a DJ by the name of Doug Tracht made a comment. He was a syndicated air personality.
What happened to Doug: he lost his chance at being on-air for years, after he made that comment (you can google his name and read about what he said, and what resulted afterwards).
He was in radio limbo for years. "Can somebody let me down off this cross?" he said at one point.
He loses his job over one comment - which was not nice, but racist? I don't think so; I knew what he was getting at when he said what he said but it was "determined" that what he said was anti-black.
Loses his job, but Don Imus got on the air in a seeming eyeblink - and Howard Stern did a horrific number on Selena, after she was shot.... and nothing at all in the way of losing his job happened.
Depends on who you "know" and how popular you are. This is what it boils down to.
So this is how Big Lots, Crazy Larry's Ollies and other type stores get cheapo stuff.
Such lies..... the manufacturers will continue to make the same cookware, they will just take her name and picture off the box. Now the cookware will have to sell on its own merits, not because she endorses it. Same goes to say for other products. If you look closely, you see how marketing works in the USA..... so called celebrities endorsing products and making millions from that. It is totally a BS process, since in reality the celebrity has nothing to do with the product, other than getting paid to endorse it.
I really do not feel sorry for the retailers. They caused their own mess they should have taken the time to think it over before dropping Paula. I think the media pumped this up so much and you think the big retailers and everyone else who dropped Paula are just nutzzzzzzzz ! They all jumped the gun so fast now it is their loss. Retailers that havbe not had Paula will pick her up and shame on those who dropped her. I think she needs to talk to Dr.Phil's son to take over her book. I do not think he is a scardy cat.
The media didn't cause this; the media are just covering all the Deen supporters raising so much heck everywhere, Deen's own clumsy interviews/non-interviews that made it worse, and the retailers no doubt have had *their* lawyers read ALL the case files and know that what will come out at trial may make Deen look far worse. Her ratings had been dropping at Food Network for more than a year; my guess is they just used this opportunity to not renew her contract, which they were already planning for. This is about business...it's about Paula Deen's ability/inability to manage her businesses, or pick a decent lawyer who would have seen all this coming and advised her to settle. She made over $100 million last year and to "save" $1.2 million this year, she stands to take a bath financially for quite some time. Somebody stick a fork in that butter-basted turkey; she's done.
The companies were the first one to jump out of the pot and into the fire.
It is their own fault for a Rush to Judgement" based on the reports of the news media mania-especially the like os CNN's sister network.
The news media have totally blown this out of proportion and the companies fell for all of it,.
The news media of today reminds me of children going around trying to start a fight to glorify their ratings.
I read the entire depo and what I see is a woman completely ignoring the fact that her brother was an absolute pig. The N word was one small part of her extremely poor judgement. When she was planning her brother's wedding she had mentioned a true southern plantation wedding would look great with black professional servers, but people may approve. She ignored numerous complaints of her brother's terrible behavior including showing subordinates porn at work. She went as far as ignoring a third party consultant companies information on the brother's unlawful behavior at work. Ultimately, her brother is bringing her down, but she had many, many opportunities to correct the terrible situations employees faced on a daily basis. Oh a few last things - The Today Show "I is what I is" get real - who would want to sound that ignorant and lastly, I'm glad I'll never see her lick her fingers while cooking again
Obviously you don't understand how a deposition works. Don't ever take the content of a deposition as indication of what a persons beliefs are, i.e., she might believe now that her brother is a pig, but the questioning in the deposition is controlled by the attorney & her answers are to be strictly relating to the questions, which were based upon the past. And it's a lawsuit against her brother – you think her attorneys coached her to go on a roll about how wrong her brother is? Please – she is to tell the truth but to limit it to just facts. You are making a great deal of interpretation out of a process you clearly don't even understand.
Thank you Sassy, excellent response !
Freedom of Speech.
This is really the Food Network's fault as much as it is Deen's. They hire Scarlett O'Hara because she can cook, she's chasrming, and most importantly she's telegenic. Then they suddenly expect her to be Martin Luther King Jr overnight? That's like expecting Madonna to turn into the Virgin Mary. The Food Network needs to screen their talent for skeletons in the closet BEFORE they're allowed to be on TV and that includes all of the contestants!
Yep, need to look at that "Pioneer Woman" FN show too. She used to call her disabled brother a "retard." Seriously.
Ridiculous that Paula was held up at gunpoint and she's the one being punished for saying a bad word in response. The robber is considered the victim.
Actually the "robber" actually WAS the victim. His dignity and strength and purpose were taken from him by a society that cared little and treated his as without importance. We ALL share the blame for this. We treat men of color as already guilty and look for reasons to incarcerate them. Our society needs far more bridges and far fewer walls.
Because of a persons race, it is determined whether or not they are accountable for their actions, really?
Progressive, your comment is really quite demeaning to people of color. You seem to be saying that they are unable to exercise any control over their actions. Humans (and most domesticated dogs) know right from wrong. Humans don't lose their moral compass because someone said or did something insulting.
Can't tell if trolling or just stupid.
Good point, Edwin.
why is it OK for Blacks to say the N word?
The robber was the victim?????
You have now gone too far with your comment.
I am not apologizing for my ancestor's behavior.
A criminal is a criminal...even if they are polka dotted.
Most Americans support Paula Deen through this ordeal and many people would gladly pay twice the asking price to show their support for her.
Speak for yourself. If it makes you happy to support someone who, after using the n-word under what are arguably extenuating circumstances, goes on, years later, to not put a stop to her brother/partner reading porn and cracking sexist jokes in the workplace, calling to one of her black employees to come to the stage in a public forum and declaring that he should step away from a black backdrop because people would not be able to see him, and to contemplate planning a plantation-style wedding, with only black men dressed a particular way as servers, have a great day, and sleep well at night.
Absolutely ridiculous. How much does this lady have to lose because she is human? It is completely outlandish for every outlet in her life & company to indemnify themselves in such a way by cutting her off and destroying her simply because she said a word that millions of people use everyday in derogatory and non-derogatory ways. Granted, she is in the spot light and that brings a higher level of scrutiny, however why are we not punishing every rapper, black or white, who verbalizes, almost 100% negatively, so horridly ALL races, women, etc...Why are we not also condemning eachother for our stupid wordly mishaps. This makes me feel so sad about our world.
Get real. It was far more than one use of the n-word 30 years ago.
Like I've been saying...about to get a lot of cookware on the CHEAP!
If you like pots and pans for china, Indonesia.
“Freudian Slips”, i.e., the exposing of the subconscious minds true attitude or feelings toward or about someone or something, can be disastrous. Just ask Mitt “47%” Romney about this.
I'm sure the suppliers could onsell to 'The Reject Shop' or 'The $2 shop'...her goods would still be a little overpriced in my opinion but hey....
IMHO......BIG LOT'S, the 99 cent Store and Dollar General will absorb all the merchandise. NO Problemo.....
How many Paula Deen threads can one news outlet milk? (adjunct question, could she get royalties?)
If Random House has halted publication of an upcoming book, why have they not stopped selling her older books? Hypocrisy or something?
Perhaps RH justification is that older books were pre-racial, derogatory comments :/
But I say money making, hypocrisy....
