While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday.

This is one food holiday you don't want to flake out on - March 7 is National Cereal Day!

For many, the day starts out with a bowl of cereal. It's a meal that adults and children alike can enjoy, and have done so for centuries. Whether you're a milk slurper or spoon user, cereal has become a comfort food enjoyed morning, noon or night.

Here are some facts about the breakfast favorite:

  • Dr. James Caleb Jackson is credited with creating the first cold breakfast cereal. It had to be soaked in milk overnight before it was edible.

  • In the 1850s, Ferdinand Schumacher began milling oats and founded the German Mills American Oatmeal Company in Akron, Ohio. In 1891, it became part of the American Cereal Company with two other milling company owners. That company later converted into the Quaker Oats Company in 1901.

  • Kellogg's was started in 1906 as the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company after two brothers - Dr. John Harvey Kellogg and Will Keith Kellogg - botched a batch of granola and accidentally invented flaked cereal at the Battle Creek Sanitorium in 1898.

  • Battle Creek, Michigan, is often referred to as the "cereal capital of the world" because of The Kellogg Company's hub.

  • The word cereal is derived from "Cerialia," an ancient Roman festival that celebrated the goddess of agriculture and grains – Ceres.

  • One bushel of wheat makes about 45 standard-sized boxes of flake cereal.

I think every Michigan student has been to Battle Creek's Kellogg Cereal Company. I went there when I was in grade school. It was actually pretty cool, from what I can remember. That was a really long, long time ago! lol..
