No matter whether you’re hosting or making a cameo appearance, there’s a lot to do before the Oscar night party train starts rolling. You have to secure an outfit that will get you voted best dressed, nail down the winners for the Oscar pool, brush up on your nominated films trivia. (CNN Entertainment has some helpful conversation starters, including that Argo director Ben Affleck had his six key actors and actresses live in close quarters for days, without Internet or air conditioning, to simulate hiding out in the Canadian ambassador’s house.)
And then of course there’s the all-important Oscar–viewing-party menu. You can honor the food in the nominated films—maybe find a recipe for Crabby Snacks or serve a big bowl of Raisin Bran in a nod to Silver Linings Playbook. Alternatively, you can go high-style Hollywood and order these fancy snacks and beverages, whether it’s for the Oscars or another fashionable party.
Nobu Hand Roll Box
It doesn’t get much more celebrity validated than Nobu, the hugely popular Japanese restaurant that boasts Robert De Niro as a co-founder and has branches worldwide. They’ve just introduced their own make-your-own hand-roll kit, which contains everything you need to make sushi for 10 to 12 Oscar-watching guests. The kit boasts 20 different ingredients, including fresh sliced fish, vegetables and molded rice, and goes for $550; you pick it up at Nobu restaurants across the country. If you really want to pretend you’re at a Hollywood party, shell out an additional $350 and a chef will come to your place and show you how to prepare the sushi.
Magnum Gold Ice Cream Bars
As someone who thinks every party needs some good ice cream, I’m thrilled about these bars from the UK brand Magnum. They come in flavors like Ghana Cocoa and Double Caramel, but for the Oscars, the way to go is Magnum Gold: Madagascan vanilla ice cream, streaked with salted caramel ribbons, covered in milk chocolate and then, geniusly covered again with a golden coating. Another selling point for me: Benicio Del Toro is featured in Magnum commercials.
Billion Dollar Popcorn
The Chicago-based popcorn retailer Berco’s has an appropriate snack for the Oscars (or Davos): Billion Dollar Popcorn. It’s available for less than that, but the still-blingy price is $250 for a one-gallon tin. The fancy-schmancy caramel corn is made with organic sugar, Vermont Creamery butter, Nielsen Massey bourbon vanilla, Danish Laeso sea salt (which Berco’s claims is the most expensive salt in the world) and 23-karat edible gold flakes. If that’s out of your price range, the Way Too Expensive White Truffle popcorn, at $32 for a one-gallon tin, will also make you sound fancy.
Oscar Night Nibbles Kit
New York Mouth offers a hit list of snacks that’s been curated especially for the big night, from terrific artisans all over the country. You’ll find lavash crackers from Hot Bread Kitchen, charcuterie from Olympic Provisions, bacon and rosemary shortbread from Klara’s, fig jam from The Girl and the Fig, and smoke-infused chocolate from Cocanu, among other nibbles. The price tag is 100 bucks; all shipping is carbon-neutral.
For Next Year’s Oscar Party: Diamond Water
Jewels are an intrinsic part of the Oscars. Diamond Water takes it a step further and puts diamonds in the water—or at least uses diamonds to enhance the water. Besides sounding hyper-fancy, the water is also high-alkaline (high-alkaline diets are all the rage with actors like Chris Hemsworth and Josh Duhamel). “Diamond Water is the most precious water that has ever been bottled,” says the DW website about the 9.5 pH alkaline water. And then adds “With every hydrating sip, Diamond Water lets you live healthy and shine bright.” You can’t do it quite yet though; the water is available only for preorder on their website.

Diamond water just sounds plain stupid.
