It was a devil of a cold. A tickle gave way to a rasp, which was swallowed up by a tide of winter ick that proved impervious to pharmaceutical intervention. After two weeks of hacking, wheezing and Googling "cough with a squeak at the end," it was time for an exorcism.

It was time for soup.

A welcome spotlight is now being shone on the murky trade in European horsemeat, but the public are still being left in the dark about the brutal treatment and needless suffering of the horses destined for their plates.

Every year around 65,000 horses are crammed into trucks and transported across Europe to the slaughterhouse for what can be days on end in hellish conditions.

National chocolate mint day

While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday.

February 19 is National Chocolate Mint Day, according to the National Confectioners Association.

Certain chocolate pairings are no-brainers: Chocolate and strawberries; chocolate and nuts; chocolate and orange; and, of course, chocolate with a surprise burst of mint.

The latter combination is pervasive, from ice cream to candy to Girl Scout cookies.
