Heart Attack Grill's top patron dies of a heart attack

John Alleman visited the Heart Attack Grill so often, the restaurant designed an entire line of clothing featuring a cartoon of its beloved "Patient Joe," and placed his face front and center on their menu. Now the restaurant reports via its Facebook page that its most loyal patron has passed away at age 52, from a heart attack.

The nighttime construction site security guard was never officially on the restaurant's payroll, but he was such a fixture at the Downtown Las Vegas restaurant, encouraging passersby to come in, he came to be known as its unofficial spokesman.

According to the Las Vegas Sun, Alleman suffered a heart attack while waiting for a bus in front of the restaurant, which boasts highly caloric menu items such as the 9,982 calorie Quadruple Bypass Burger, Butterfat Milkshakes and Coronary Dogs.

Alleman remained at Sunrise Hospital until his brother Paul, his only surviving relative, made the decision to remove him from life support on Monday. Alleman passed away soon after.

A statement on the restaurant's Facebook page read, "To all who've given hopes and prayers for John's struggle in the cardio vascular unit, it ended humanely this morning at 10am. Dr Andy and Dr Jon were at bedside as John slipped into the next world. WE LOVE YOU BROTHER!"

"Dr. Jon" refers to Heart Attack Grill's owner Jon Basso. He is neither a medical professional nor a stranger to controversy - or loss of his most avid fans. The restaurant's previous 575-pound spokesman, 29-year-old Blair River, died in March 2011 at the age of 29. In February 2012, the restaurant made headlines when another patron suffered a heart attack while eating a Triple Bypass Burger.

Heart Attack Grill is perhaps best known for actively courting fans and nayayers alike with slogans like "Taste worth dying for!" and "Cash only, because you might die before the check clears."

Menu items like lard-fried "Flatliner Fries," highly caloric "Butterfat Shakes" and unfiltered cigarettes abound, scantily clad female servers dressed as nurses take orders as "prescriptions," and a house policy allows diners weighing over 350 pounds to eat for free.

Basso told the Las Vegas Sun that he currently has no plans to alter the Grill's menu, though it will remain closed the day of Alleman's funeral.

Thank you, I've just been searching for information approximately this subject for ages and yours is the greatest I have came upon so far. However, what in regards to the conclusion? Are you certain about the source?|What i don't understood is in reality how you're no longer actually a lot more smartly-favored than you might be now. You are so intelligent.

So BSBK, what does that mean 'not liable as a taxpayer'? By law hospitals must take critical patients. The taxpayer is not paying. Those that use that same particular hospital are paying. Those that are paying the same insurer are paying. I AM tired of paying for someone else's hospital bill! You want to be a great American? Then stop eating yourself to death – literally. I am in the OR when they take all the goddamn plaque from carotid artery surgery. People are literally eating , drinking, and smoking themselves to death. It is pure ignorance and, although there is no law against it, it hurts everyone of us. Those that are close to the patient, those that must assume the responsibility or financial liability to care for the recovering patient -IF they can even fully recover, and the rest of our country that has to pay for people that have no self control, no respect for their own body or life, and what looks like to be no capacity to think properly for themselves. They may be a dumb ass but it costs YOU as well as ME. Be a GREAT AMERICAN and take care of your body–that will reduce health costs in America!!!

This story , to me, is a cautious example of the need to explore the variables of a "healthy diet". For example, the amount of "calories" is focal point of the discussion. However, does this fully explain the danger of a restaurant like this? What is it, in the meal, that is dangerous? Is it the fatty-meat or is it the bun, french fries and soda? Granted, most people that ate here, wouldn't throw out their bun or drink diet soda (I don't think diet is even offered), but the question, again, is what part of the meal it the actual bad part. I think it's harmful to assume that the entire meal is dangerous. Talk to people that have had success with low-carb diet and you'll see that they've dramatically increased their fat intake, while improving their lipid profiles.

Also, even though I'm not from America, one has to question the freedom and responsibility of the individual to make decisions. What's to stop this restaurant from being banned, like the large sodas in NY?

      Matt,

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that when you're eating 3,000 calorie meals laden with pure lard that it's bad for you. If you put a stick of butter in a milkshake and drink it on a regular basis, you're going to clog your arteries with cholesterol. It's just simple biology.

Really? Shouldn't be in biz is number 2? I thought american's believed in freedom. WTF! Why is it that when someone doesn't like something they say there aught to be a law prohibiting it?

Anyone who eats regular at ths place obviously has mental health issues.
It's not healthy behaviour, and we may laugh about it, but behind it all are people who's only enoyment in life is the food they eat. They may stand behind a thinly veilied disguise of indifference the Heart Attack Grill affords them, but in end it's really just an act of suicide, albeit a tastey one at that. At least they find some pleasure and the empowerment to fulfill their destiny. Thanks to the HAG.

Hey Dave, go pizz up a rope. You have no business to place judgement on someone else when what they do doesn't impact your life. And don't give me crap about health insurance costs. Health insurance costs are determined the the insurance companies and the only thing they care about is screwing everyone.

David is right , you just can't accept it. these people have given up , they have accepted their plight and given in to their addictions. So they figure, let me go out the way I want and be happy but they are not happy, they have just convinced themselves that where they are in life is their only option. It's sad but he's absolutely right.

If I were visiting the area I would go...just to say I had been. I love a good burger. But eat there all the time??? My heart and health says "No". I eat mostly vegetarian (no I'm not...it's just the way my diet plays out) but a once-in-a-while indulgenece is ok. The problem is...people don't view it that way. That kind of eating is a lifestyle to a lot of people. Couldn't do it.

Talking about shutting down that restaurant is crazy.
They have a perfectly regular sized cheeseburger on the menu, but that won't make the headlines (and it's delicious). It's a themed restaurant, the 9,000 calorie is the biggest burger on the menu (it's like 5 burgers in one). It's what they are known for but I doubt they sell too many a day.

Favorite theme of the day on this thread: The people who like to spout off the only partially true "I/we pay for his medical bills blah blah blah." Do you even know how medical billing works? What pays for what? If he had his own private insurance that is not your company, and it doesn't increase your rates, would you be less angry? Are you equally angry at the skinny person who goes to the ER once a month for non-emergent conditions? Are you upset that medicaid only pays 15% on average of a medical bill, thereby also making the rest of us who pay out of pocket pay more to help hospitals recoup the loss?

But nope, its just this fat guy's fault

Most of you are just uptight to the fact that you don't like his behavior, and you can't control it. You seriously want to close down this business because of one moron's lack of self control? Using that logic, we should close down car dealerships, because a lot of people don't adhere to the speed limit, which can lead to accidents and deaths.

Sorry Vlad, you are flat wrong. I do know how it all works, and I have been involved in the negotiations to procure a medium sized group plan. I live in a town of Constitutionalist, TeaParty Hogs, and because so many people are morbidly obese, have Type II Diabetes, and have had major health claims related to diseases that people choose to get because of gluttony, my skinny vegan family has to pay premiums of $1100 per month. If we had a healthier group, our premuims would be about $700/mo. So basically, my family pays an extra $400 per month because of the fat lady in the office next to me. I rightly blame her, and her fat ilk.

Once a guy gets so fat he can't even work anymore, he gets medicare, and we all pay for it.

Health costs of people with Type II Diabetes run on everage $6000/year more than everyone else.

Oh, and we cannot discriminate against morbidly obese people in any employment decisions.

My solution: Make all products that are linked to social costs taxed to the degree of their expense, so that only people who choose to partake in unhealthy lifestyle choices pay for the cost of healthcare related to those choices. If you have one Big Mac a year you aren't doing much damage and will pay a very small health care premium, But if you have two thousand calories in fast food every day, you should be paying about $5.00 a day toward your future medical fund.

Actually, not flat wrong. I work in medical compensation...good try though. Also, rather then keep it neutral, you turned into the ultra-liberal extremist espousing your hatred for all meat lovers who may or may not be republican re: "tea party hogs." I must have missed the memo where all vegans never die of heart attacks. But yes.....many, many, and yes, repeat many different factors affecting medical payment and compensations. I decided to repeat becuase its possible your brain may not be getting enough natural protein ( shaped tofu into with beef flavoring doesn't count ). Perhaps it is your lack of protein that is making you so ornery.

You know, your skinny, twig boy, non-showering hippy vegan trash.

For the record, a proud moderate who doesn't believe that, but I despise people like you who can't discuss anything without demonstrating your partisan hatred for the other side. Perfect demonstration of what is truly wrong with this country. Enjoy your wheat germ

Well, every time it takes 3 extra people to move a patient, the other patients wait. Every time a healthcare worker goes out on disability from injuries sustained lifting / moving/ scanning obese patients, all workers pay. When hospitals have to buy specialized equipment produced solely for 450+ lb patients, every insured patient pays.

Obese patients simply take more resources, and *most* (not all) of them arrived at that condition voluntarily. It's not surprising that marketing this lifestyle is offensive to some.

To me the food sounds disgusting, but if someone told me I have to try a butter milkshake before I die, I'd gladly take them up on it, because I KNOW MY LIMITS. Well; with a name like "heart attack grill," you sort of know what you're getting going into it all :) Still, I don't think governments should be shutting down restaurants, and frankly, I believe in individual reponsibility. These are grown adults who can make their own choices; these are NOT children! And yes, anything can happen to anybody (I'm a schoolteacher; look at what happened in Newtown, which is less than an hour from where I live! There are also people who get ALS without any family history of anything; look at all the people that got leukemia after hiroshima, or lung cancer after 9/11; I knew someone who was perfectly healthy, and now he's in recovery from a stroke at 47, and he's a doctor no less), but a lot of people seem to use that as an excuse to neglect their bodies in some cases (which is why places like heart attack grill exist in the first place) , and I cannot help but think that some of these people WANT to die (I know quite a few of them personally). Some have even told me they can't wait to go "up the chimney..."

I try not to think that way, but to each one's own, I guess. We DO all have a date with the reaper. If you want to meet him sooner, go ahead. It's your life.

For example; all the folks that think they are really smart and contributing positive input to the dialog are really just spinning their wheels. However, we trolls, through simply spreading a little hate, tossing some bad bait, or otherwise screwing with folks, are actually having an impact. We help people to have a crappy day.

I have never been to the heart attack grill, but if I was in LV and came across it, I might go in there just for the hell of it and have a meal. One horribly excessive meal now and then does not make it out to be a life time of indulgence. The poor fellow that died obviously ate there alot, and who know if his meals there killed him or a faulty heart valve, etc. This country would be a whole lot better place if people would worry about their own lives and leave others to their own business. For those who slam overweight people, there are alot of people out there that are their size because of medical issues, after effects from injury, thyroid, heredity, etc. Not everyone who is overweight just pulls up a chair to a buffet with a knife and fork. For example, I am 6'5" and a big guy, I had my knee destroyed in a car accident and am not able to be active as I used to be and have put on more weight from being less active, being literally every step I take is pain. Does that mean I make poor choices and should be stigmatized? No. Sorry to have ranted, just tired of seeing people who throw stones at others for no other reason to just throw the stones.

Then again, doctors have made it clear that genetic and medical problems related to weight control can be overcome if the will is there to do so. And I'm sorry about your knee. Have you tried alternate workout methods? I'm not contradicting you when you say that we should stop applying stigma to overweight people, but I think using these things as excuses would set the example that you don't have to work if you think you have a good enough reason. That's a big enough problem in America as it is,

I've never made an excuse in my life and don't get me wrong, I am not implying you were saying I was. Not that the masses care, but to satisfy your curiousity being you asked, I still try to walk as much as possible, basically I was rear-ended on a freeway offramp that I was stopped in traffic on, and my knee slammed into the dash at the impact, the menisucus was shredded and most of it had to be removed via surgery. The ortho stated that due to the removal it is wearing unevenly and eventually will be bone on bone and have to have the knee replaced. Unfortunately the general rule is that they won't do the replacement until it is bone on bone which could be years. The part above and beyond that is salt on the wound per se is that I have reaction to NSAID's which are anti-imflamatories, Advil, Ibuprofen, Celebrex, etc and can't take them, so its tolerate the pain by day so I can work and function being I refuse to just sit on a couch and collect disability, etc. and then its a narcotic prescription at night if the pain gets to the point I can't tolerate it. So basically I'm in a lose lose situation. I am sure I am not the only one who has to deal with issues like this. I used to play basketball, volleyball, walk all over the place, used to take cruises and if anyone has ever taken a cruise, they know you walk all over the place and then some being the ship is nearly 1000ft long not to mention when you are off the ship. I agree with you that is a big problem in the USA, it just needs to be addressed as the medical issue that it is and not as a stigma from those who have never had to deal with it personally.

Michael, I'm a tall guy and I have had a couple of major injuries. I decided not to listen to the doctors and am looking after myself. I keep my weight down and my body responds. There are exercises, other than walking, that will keep you in shape, and there are food related things you can do to keep your weight in check. Combining those will make things a lot easier on your knee. You can't just accept what doctors tell you. They are always presenting worst case scenarios so you won't sue them for giving them too positive an outlook.

"Okay, then why do we have seatbelt laws, helmet laws, drinking and driving laws? Why don't we have "overeating-until-we-give-ourselves-heart-attack" laws?"

One should be free to do whatever they want to themselves. You lose these rights when it comes to the safety of others. Drinking and driving is killing other people it doesnt matter if you kill yourself, but you are more likely to kill someone else. Seatbelt laws are the same, even tho you are more likely to kill yourself by not wearing one, you can kill other people by not wearing one.(think about hitting a bump and getting knocked out of your seat and causing your vehicle to flip over, this has happened....). Helmet laws im against, i personally would choose to wear one if i drove a motorcycle, but this should be a choice((bicycle helmets are just stupid).

Obesity laws are completely unjust. If you want to eat a heart attack burger, go for it! However i do not want to pay for your stupidity. Charging you more for health insurance is perfectly fine, if you choose to be a fat dumbass, then you should pay for it. But there should be no laws stopping you from being a fat ass if you want to.

Its always funny when you see some fat ass with 6 burgers in one hand and a diet coke in the other.... That diet crap with the cancer causing fake surgers isnt going to save you from your fat ass diet.

It isn't irony. It is cause and effect. Irony would be a vegan protester outside having a heart attack when he went in to use the bathroom. Or, having been taken to the hospital with chest pains, being found to have a previously undiagnosed but highly correctable congenital valve problem (eating there having prevented a heart attack.) A real life irony was that the promoter of jogging, who took it up to battle heart disease, had his fatal heart attack while jogging (though it is arguable, since he lived ten years longer than his cardiologist predicted prejogging). Or that Euwall Gibbons, who promoted living off the plants in the wild, died choking on a twig he was chewing. While that is also cause-and-effect, the ironic element is that the thing he promoted for delaying death triggered his. Irony is getting the direct opposite effect than the action was designed to create. Thus, Achilles' mother's efforts to make her son invulnerable were ironic because it was her technique that rendered him mortal.

There should be regulations on unhealthy food service as there are on other unhealthy practices such as smoking and consuming alcohol. Actually Pete if you take the people who climb Mount Everest you have a high mortality rate. If climbing that mountain were not only for the rich (those who can afford to take a month or more off of work), you would get a much larger group of people doing it and in turn a much larger group dying. So high risk takers like Mr. Alleman are in the same category as other high risk takers like climbers, lava rafters, condomless prostitute users etc. and many people like that die doing the thing that drives their passion. Bravo Mr. Alleman, Bravo. Not everyone is brave enough to live and to die for what they are passionate about.

We are programmed to die regardless of how well we take care of our bodies. My grandmother lived to be 102 and she was certainly NOT the poster child for healthy living. Go figure, huh? And therein lies the dichotomy. Eat "right", exercise regularly, take supplements, reduce your stress level and you might live to be all of a century old, but it's certainly not likely. 100 years, and the earth has been spinning for 3.5 billion. I lived in rural Georgia in the late sixties and there was a centagenarian birthday celebrated on the radio. The old man was asked to what he credited his long life and he said starting each day with a shot of Red Eye and ending each night with a stogie. I might consider leading a vegan life with no alcohol or chocolate or other 'sin' foods/ beverages if they said it would make my twenties last well into my sixties but tell me it will take my death day from seventy (three score and ten) to a hundred and you can just keep those years. Your taste buds die, your sense of smell goes, your hearing goes, you move like molasses in January and you sleep through your televised birthday party – not my idea of a fun time in the old town tonight.[ For the Bible munchers who might respond, please remember that letters are both quantifiers and approximaters in Hebrew and Aramaic and that forty is a goodly number (longer than a moon,) four hundred is very many and 900 is beyond numbering, not actual numbers.] Meanwhile, I'll eat my chocolate, drink my wine, munch my cheeseburger and shake my commodious bootie.

1500 calories a day should be fine for the average adult. If you are a farm worker, steal worker, person who has a high degree of physical activity then 2000 would be fine. However most of us do not have that kind of a career. The labels we have that say we need a 2000 calories daily diet need to be changed. Also the older you get the less food you need too. I cut my calories down to about 1200, I work in an office environment, and I found that food tastes better, and its more stimulating. When you eat too much its like watch too much TV, it just gets boring andis too easy to do.

nonsense like this is another big part of why our healthcare system is so expensive. 10% of the patients in the healthcare system account of 75% percent of all the medical bills. Diabetes, heart disease, cancers, stroke, all go way up for people who are obese. The obese are a bi-product of a nation where people are constantly told to consume more and more and more. More steak, more chicken, more pizza, more pasta, fries, burgers, etc. The grocery departments in stores are taken up primarily with hi calorie non-food in boxes and bags. The produce isles are small and filled with food that has been chemically gassed to make it yellow, or red. It is not enough to say just don't over eat when you are submerged in a culture that practically commands that you DO over eat. The exchange students that attend our highschool are the canaries in the coal mine. They show up from France, or Germany, or Italy, slim and fit. By the time they go home they have ballooned 10 or 20 pounds. They are not used to massively high calorie count foods we take for granted. We utterly fail to realize that our eating habits are completely bizzare. Most upper middle class European families have a small fridge that does not rise above the counter top. We would call that a mini fridge, the type we have in our man-caves. We have gone from being a trim and fit nation to being a fat obese nation, and we like it. Yet we cannot understand why we spend so much on healthcare. We blame the insurance company.

ahhh freddom in america.. Eat as much as you want and see your life go down the tubes.. Such is the case with every obession..With stress and just daily life most turn to food. Food makes you feel better gives you energy and it is something you need. That is dangerous if you do not know how to control your urges and emotions as obese people obviously have a very hard time doing other wise they wouldn't eat soo much. The problem I see with this restaurant is they glorify being overweight. They want you to be as unhealthy as possible. Even our nutritional facts are based on a 2000 calorie a day diet when in fact if you have a desk job and don't workout you should only be at or around 1500.. that 25% is HUGE... that means that in a month and you are on a 2000 calorie a day diet and you are gaining weight or maintaining an unhealthy weight you should realize you just ate about 8 more days of food per month than you should have. 8 days worth of food.. to put that in an even larger perspective it means you ate about 3 months more food per year than you should. Now do you see why America has such an obesity problem? the obsession of a 2000 calorie a day diet when we need about 1100-1200 a day just to survive and 1500-1600 to be healthy if you are very active. How many obese people do you know that are very active?

i am all for freedom of choice. men and women have died to protect our choices. but you shouldn't demand care when your health goes to crap. that guy never should have been put on life support. i mean, why should medicare/medicaid pay for this, or hospitals be stuck with the costs of this?

do what you want as long as it does not hurt others; so long as others don't have to pay for the consequences.

I think what "Yum Yum" meant was this individual controlled his destiny and he chose poorly. We should not have to pay for his poor judgment. Last time I checked, children don't can cancer from eating 9,000 calorie burgers and the elderly made it that far for a reason....again, not eating 9000 calorie burgers.

        uh...

elderly with chronic conditions that land them in an icu critically ill with prolonged courses account for a significant amount of health care expense.

children with cancer are heart-breaking, and their potential to live long, productive lives is improved with aggresive healthcare. those with terminal cancer should be kept comfortable in their parents arms.

the fat guy who chooses to eat this crap day after day should be allowed to die when critically ill, as should anyone who constantly engages in unhealthy lifestyles.

otherwise, COWTASTESGOOD can foot the bill.

This is just a stupid way to die. I just turned 48 and enjoy life. But I learned to actually like good healthy clean food. How short-sighted to put all your pleasure into the minutes (or hours) you spend eating terrible food, and become a sick slow sluggish overweight person who has a heart attack while waiting for a bus? No thanks. I hope that I am not dead in 3 years.....I hope that I'll still be feeling like 20-something and running 7-8 miles or more at a time, wake-boarding, hiking and weightlifting.....even cleaning my own house. Geez. This is a total disregard for life.

Living and eating healthy is obviously desirable for how it makes you feel. Just remember however that you're not going to live to see 300, or even a buck fifty for that matter. That's the rub. Your physical body is finite. All that healthy eating and exercise isn't going to buy you a microsecond longer than your genetics will allow you to live. We are programmed to die. My grandmother lived to be 102. She has a high fat diet, was sedentary and overweight most of her life. Explain that one to me...

Genetics...unfortunately we are not all within the same gene pool. This argument that we won't live to 150 or 300 years is moot. The point is to make the best of your years. Not everyone can play the odds your grandmother did. You are fortunate to have her genes. The vast majority of Americans do not and therefore their diet will play a crucial roll in whether they get to 100+, see their grandchildren grow, see the next greatest invention- or have a hand in it, or a long life with their soul mate

Why do you automatically assume that he wasn't paying for his own hospitalization? Just because you live on the government teat doesn't mean everyone does. And those of us that don't are sick of the government telling us what we can eat or drink.

Did you read another article somewhere else saying that the man was on Medicare and Medicaid? Very presumptuous of you to just assume that he didn't have health insurance either through his job or privately. If he paid into his own health insurance than you have no right to judge him or how he lived his life. There are still people in this world who would rather live their lives on their own terms, even if that means living a shorter life. To each his own. Saying that someone shouldn't have been allowed to even be on life support is a damn cold thing to say.

And, I guess you'd probably wish we could go back and stop all those cave men from eating meat – and maybe the animals should have been stopped from eating each other too, eh? After all, it couldn't be good for a lion to gorge himself on a wildebeest and then go to sleep! Think of all the shortened lives of lions and tigers and such because they ate meat! Such a shame!

And for all its goods, those who have the healthiest diets include a balance of vegetables, meat and fruit and stay away from sodium and starches...bottom line. Meat may be murder, but life is life and vegetables and fruits are just as much alive, just because they don't have faces doesn't mean you are not ending life when you consume them.

Spent three childhood years in Europe. Dad used to say that the French devloped sauces to cover up that the meat was spoiled. Lots of courses of small portions so you don't get enough bites to really taste what's in it. The English have traditionally eaten high fat foods (full English breakfast, chips (fries) dipped in butter.) I loved German food – simple, clean, pickled or gingered, beet sugar) but the sausages aren't heart friendly, nor are the portions. Jean lumps all European cuisine into one (there are at least three major cuisines in France alone.) Oh! And the French eat horse, the Italians eat donkey. The horsemeat presently showing up in English frozen food and labeled as 'beef' is from Romania. If Europeans made the best, healthiest 'fast food', it wouldn't be Star$ and Mickey D's in Bejing and Bangkok and Nairobi and Paris. We make tasty fast food, menus include 'healthy' items few order. In India, a Big Mac contains no beef. They don't sell the MacRib in Tel Aviv. The pizza in the Pizza Hut in Bangkok has chicken instead of pepperoni. You can eat mock-American anywhere these days.

Me, I blame the 'obesity epidemic' on the change in work (from heavily manual to heavily sedantary) and the proliferation of substitutes (high fructose sweeteners, aspartame, reduced fat mayo, margarine, methylcellulose and other 'dough conditioners' in bread, salt substitutes (sodium nitrate instead of sodium chloride is still salt, folks.)) That and I remember when an elementary school lunchbox contained a sandwich composed of two slices of bread, a tablespoon of Miracle Whip and one slice of cheese along with an orange the size of a regulation baseball, a pair of Hostess cupcakes and a small bag of chips. None of us were fat but we all took PE every morning and had two recesses where we played hard. Now we dope up our kids so they can sit still for a mind numbing seven and a half hours of preparing for standardized tests. Bring back PE, playing outside, riding your bike to school, get rid of the fifty pound backpack that makes it impossible to move well and our kids won't build the brown fat that will make adult life a torture of chasing a livable diet. Brown fat actually triggers appetite, reduces the effectiveness of insulin and almost insures obesity. President Kennedy made exercising at school a national prioroty. Bring it back.

However, don't adhere to the typical French sterotype and continue to be a total snob with an inflated sense of taste and refinement and make unsubstantiated and justified claims on food you've never eaten. Eat at McDonalds every day and the same thing is likely to happen, just because they mock and don't hide the result of what will happen doesn't mean they are a bad business.

That is like having both parents die of colon cancer and scoffing at a colonoscopy.

Or knowing you are a diabetic and still drinking a 2 liter bottle of Mountain Dew everyday.

It's sad that 25% of people who voted think the restaurant "shouldn't even be in business." Are you that unsure of your ability to eat in moderation that you want to control everyone?

I'm 5'2" 110lbs with excellent cholesterol levels and I voted that I'd go there. An occasional high calorie splurge in my otherwise ideal diet isn't going to hurt me. But then again, I believe in education and trust myself to make my own decisions.

Agree 100-percent. I'm in pretty good shape and take care of myself, but eating junk food like that every once in a while is fine just as long as you don't make it a habit. And I doubt most of the patrons of this place eat there regularly, nor do they eat the very worst things on the menu.

Same here, although I'm a guy and a lot bigger. Actually right now I'm overweight not from eating, but from working very long hours (65-76 per week).

I would not eat it now, but when I am working a lighter schedule and have time to get back into shape, I would definitely love to try it out occasionally. Spending your life avoiding food you might enjoy and things that might be fun in life to add a few extra years to an infirm life is not a life worth living imo. Staying fit into your 70s is a far better move if it happens than avoiding food and still being sedentary in your 30s.

Obamacare prohibits charging higher insurance premiums to individuals with preexisting conditions or medical problems, including obesity. Since insurance companies can't charge these individuals a higher rate, they have to increase everyone's rate. As a result, everyone has higher insurance premiums. We're forced to subsidize the choices of people to wreck their health, instead of holding them responsible for the consequences.

This is simply not true. We have government mandated health insurance, but have not gone to a single provider system. Also, that's the way all insurance works. A large group od consumers pay small indivdual premiums that are pooled together to cover possible catostrophic losses in the future.

Something most Americans don't seem to realize is that we were paying for peoples poor lifestyle choices even before obamacare. Those that lived long enough, or those who went on disabilty, would eventually fall into the Medicare system and would rack up more medical bills than those who took good care of themselves. This is another reason our "for profit" medical system needs to go away and be completly government controlled. It's not just those who lived poorly that rack up more Medicare debt, its also those who simply couldn't afford to get any sort of preventative care early on. Another reason our life expectancy is so dismally low compared to other civilized nations. And if you want to brand me "Socialist" for thinking the government should pay for medical care of it's citizens then I brand you Socialist for thinking they should pay for the police and fire departments. The medical industry is the number one contributor to our GNP so is it any wonder the media is so bent on convincing us that wanting free or at least affordable care is evil???

This is not an Obamacare issue. Insurance companies have always profited hugely by charging fees based on averaging the needs of healthy and unhealthy customers – mandated healthcare has nothing to do with it. Even if this cretin wasn't insured, he would still receive hospital care. Who do you think pays for that? Everyone else with increased healthcare costs! So either way, pre- or post-Obamacare, the public loses.

Not even close to being right. Yes, genetics does play an important part, but so does diet. If you're continually stuffing your body with saturated fats and your blood cholesterol levels are high as a result, it makes it much easier for blockages to form in your cornorary arteries.

Does eating fatty foods guarantee that you're going to die prematurely from a heart attack? No, it doesn't. But the fact that standing out in the middle of the freeway at rush hour doesn't guarantee that you'll get hit by a car doesn't mean that you're not an idiot for doing it.

Heart Disease is actually reversable by changing your nutrition through diet and nutritional supplements. We are wasting billion of dollars a year un unnecessary coranary heart by pass surgery, Surgery is ineffective becasue it does not chagne the root cause of the problem, Inflammation. I agree with the owner that the American Medical Assocaition has done nothing to prevent the obesity epidemic and the epidemic of diabetis and heart disease in this country. And the cost of un necessary medical care for these preventable illness is bankrupting our country. If we just shut down 80 percent of our hospitals we could let these people die off sooner and not bankrupt the country.

I'm a liberal but I'm entirely on the "personal responsibility" side for eating food. Unlike things such as smoking, guns, etc., eating unhealthy food ONLY HURTS YOU. If you don't work and you put yourself in poverty, you're hurting your kids too and I support welfare for the sake of the kids. If you smoke in a building, you're hurting others with your second-hand smoke and that should be regulated to protect the people who didn't choose to smoke. But if you eat junk food, you're only hurting yourself, and everyone should have the right to hurt themselves.

I don't see any harm in splurging once in a while, but you have to set limits for yourself. Being a regular customer of a restaurant that serves ridiculously high fat and calorie laden entrees is just asking for trouble. Most people wouldn't consider going home every night after work, and then frying a pound of bacon for their dinner. Dinner for one, that is. I see nothing wrong with this restaurant, as long as the customers who dine there realize that it is what it is, and that is a once-in-a-while indulgence.

Perhaps, instead of trying to regulate our way out of this sort of abomination, we could educate people about the facts surrounding food and any other activities considered 'bad'? If everyone shunned this sort of all-American display of outrageous excess, they wouldn't be open. Don't make it illegal, don't label it immoral, just make sure everyone knows how absolutely disgusting it is. Have we not learned that banning things only makes them more tantalizing?

Wow. This topic is just crazy, some are people are just trying to be funny and laugh this off and others are truly affected by this issue. First off, obesity is an issue – it must be thought of in line with Alcoholism and the public needs to be better educated about the dangers of not only eating badly but overeating. However, that being said, we do live in a capitalistic and free society and it's anyone's right to not only to create an irresponsible restaurant but to eat there as well... that's our freedom of choice. And I for one am not against that.

The only thing I have an issue with is letting anyone that weighs more than 350lbs eat for free – it's a mean gimmick designed to hurt those that may have a problem. Even bars have restrictions on them, if they see that a patron comes in inebriated or is drinking way too much, they have to "cut them off". It's like a bar having a policy to give Alcoholics free drinks! It must be thought like that because the situations are very similar, they are both compulsory, genetic and addictive issues.

So keep doing what you're doing Heart Attack Grill, but just have a heart (pun intended) and regulate what you serve to who from time to time and PLEASE get rid of your Eat for Free if over a certain weight – it's not cool. Thanks.

The last stronghold of American freedom. Just don't elect the idiot Bloomberg in Vegas. Doing what we decide we want to do is the American way (that's going fast).

I agree. They can serve whatever the heck they want and market it any way they like. No one is being forced to eat there. It's not like they hide the fact that it's unhealthy.

"Doing what we decide we want to do is the American way." That is the exact same strategy used by Wall St., and looked what happened in 2008-2009. The developed world has learned that setting limits and regulations is best, and is what Bloomberg did in NY. If you are a parent, then you will understand about setting limits for your kids – unless you want your kids to be complete terrors.

Only Americans think what Bloomberg did recently is a knock against freedom. All he did was limit how much you can drink at one time, he didn't stop you from drinking or going back for refills. The world pretty much rolled their eyes and laughed at all Americans that complained about it.

Implementing something like that in this case is also necessary. With obesity on the rise, someone will have to pay for all the insurance and medial expenses incurred, and it will fall onto the average citizen. Sorry, obesity isn't free.

They walk around thinking they are normal people and have no idea how much the people around them dislike them. However, if you try to tell them they're jerks, they get upset. That's the real problem. You probably really don't know, do you?

Do what you want, but pay the price. Hospital bills, search and rescue etc. If a mountain climber needs to be rescued, they should pay the bill. If a recreational boater needs to be rescued, the Coast Guard should be reimbursed. People should be required to take out insurance policies that would cover rescue operations for dangerous VOLUNTARY activities. They should be charged higher premiums for higher risk (such as obesity, smoking, excessive drinking) as well.

Problem with all of the people on this board who are oh so aghast that a place like this ispermitted to be in business is you believe there is no personal responsibility and that there should be no consequences for the choices people make. This is America, anyone is free to start a business if they have the money and the ability and everyone else is free to buy from that business, or not. This man made his choice, unfortunately he has to "live" with the choices he made. If there were no one willing to go to this grill it would be out of business – that's how the free market works.

I see no wrong with a place like this existing. But people should have the personal responsibility to know it's not a place to go eat at often. It's in Vegas, after all. Most people go there for a vacation, would eat there once while there for the novelty of it, and never go again. Nothing wrong with that.

If you live there, however, you should be responsible enough to know better.

i kinda wish the people at both extremes of the 'dietary habits spectrum' would settle down on their extremism. we need vegetables, a limited amount of meat, carbs, dairy, cholesterol, fat, etc... and we also need to splurge once in a while. why is this compromise, which is not hard to live out, such a touchy issue? yeah, every adult has the right to eat however they want. they also have the right to eat in a balanced way. afterward, it's a question of choice, I understand, but we're responsible for maintaining our own health. exercising rights without fulfilling our responsibilities is totally out of balance.

The hormones and antibiotics they feed livestock mean they have their own problems as human food, beyond the lipid issue. Livestock was not meant to eat corn and in order to raise them on it they require more medication than otherwise necessary. Their milk contains blood and pus... Take a look at CAFO – the book on feedlot meat raising and you'll see
animal muscle protein has it's own issues. When cows ate grass they also contained vitamins etc. that were beneficial to humans, like K2 which directs calcium in the body into bones and out of heart valves, which are not synthesized from corn feed.

I’m not a perfect eater by any stretch. I don’t smoke and I rarely drink, but I do have a weakness for junk food. I used to run and lift weights a few times a week but I’ve fallen off a bit over the last few months and have put on a little weight. I don’t pretend to be perfect. I think a lot of the self-rightous flock to articles like this to thumb their noses at one guy's extremely poor choices in regards to eating in order to feel better about, and, or, validate their own failings in other avenues of life. It’s the same reason people like to watch shows like ‘Hoarders’. No one is perfect, some of us are just more honest about it, even on the internet.

I see some people talking about rights here...

Rights go hand in hand with responsibilities. You certainly have a right to eat, drink and be merry on anything you want and whenever you want to.

You also have a responsibility to be sensible. Someones lack of responsiblity always costs me. My lack of responsibility can and probably will cost someone else.

If people honestly feel that they can do whatever they want, whenever they want without consequence then I think you should be able to. But I also think you should be refused medical treatment if your fat because, lets face it, fat people are fat through no one elses fault but their own.

The people with "glandular problems" do exist... but they are rare. 99% of obese people get their through poor choices they are free to make.

We, the taxpayers and insurance premium payers, suffer beause of these peoples self righteous lack of accountability. And we know who you are, the entire south...

Whoever writes your polling question sucks and they're obviously trying to push responses a certain direction.

The question is "WOULD you eat at Heart Attack Grill?" and the only way to answer in the affirmative is if you can enthusiastically say that you already have, and loved it. WTF??

NO ONE WAS EVEN ASKING IF YOU HAD ALREADY EATEN AT HEART ATTACK GRILL.

Would you eat at Heart Attack Grill?

    "No, but I want to..."

So, that means that you WOULD NOT eat at the restaurant... but you want to. Great.

My answer is "Yes, I would."

Not "Maybe, if I were in the area..."

I'd just like to try their food at some point, if that's ok with you, AND YOUR MORONIC POLL QUESTION!!!!!!!!

... my condolences to that man's family for their loss.

Lets face it, this restaurant is all about fun.

It is fun to go to a place with such a crazy name and eat something off the charts – once or twice in a lifetime that is.

A visit to Vegas or many other places in the country, eating a whooping burger can happen in many restaurants.

This is just one that make "fun" of it by name, and people can say they got to go there.

The problem is the patron, not the restaurant. If they did not eat it there, they would find something else somewhere else that would cause the same damage. Carl's Jr is a good next bet.

It is sad for all in the end, but ultimately people are most responsible for themselves, what they eat, and the consequences thereof.

Unfortunately, blaming others is the easy route when it all goes wrong.

It would be nice if we felt a little more responsible or loving to the people around us though... instead of treating them like a dollar sign, indiscriminately selling them guns so they can go on bloody rampage's, make a market out of feeding people insanely unhealthy food so their children can watch them die a slow, miserable death, learn from example and become "Heart Attck Grills" next target consumer. Makes you wonder if were already in the midst of a zombie apocalypse, we just don't realize it.

What denial? The place is called Heart Attack Grill, only a complete idiot would not know what they are eating. You think the restaurant needs to make more of an effort to warn people what they are getting into than the extremely obvious name itself? On a side note I will have to try the place out next time I am in the area, it looks good, but the name alone tells me it should not be a frequent place to eat.

Let me guess you need warning signs not to climb over the zoo fence into the lion cage. The reason why there are so many stupid people is that we spend tons of money and effort to protect them from themselves. Save the money, let Darwinism thin the herd. That's how species survive in nature, only the best survive to old age. Humanity is doing the opposite, by overly protecting the stupid we are making society as a whole stupid.

Will the next step in feeding depravity be factory-farm themed? Patrons could be herded through chutes, encouraged with "mild" cattle prods, into grate-bottomed pens crowded with other eager patrons waiting (under warming lights!) for their delicious meals. When the theme-named ("Pretty Porker, "Tanks a Lot") calorie-packed, macerated slop sluices into the troughs, patrons can experience the joy of competing with their fellow diners for their portion. After dinner, servers dressed in rubber aprons will appear with a hih-power hose to wash the happy diners down.

He or anyone can eat whatever they want. HOWEVER, people tend to forget why our federal budget has problems. Health care costs are out of hand. Many Americans don't have health insurance even if they can afford it. If you have health insurance, it is often backed by TAXPAYER dollars and/or higher rates on business and individuals who have it.

So, if you want to eat, drink and smoke until you kill yourself that is fine. Just sign a legal waiver of any health care coverage you can't pay focompletelyly byourselflf.

Funny how "individual" or "states" rights people complain about government involvement, but forget they are getting lots of handouts.

This is a right to choose what we eat and how much we eat without fear of government intervention. It doesn't necessarily mean you eat it all the time but the choice should remain yours to make and yours alone, just as medical advice can be followed or disregarded by a patient, it is their choice t make.

I disagree. Similar to mandatory seatbelts, if one person's actions have a negative economic impact on others, those actions can be legislated against. In each case (intentional obesity and not wearing a seatbelt) insurance rates rise on everyone, due to the actions of a few. The government should be permitted to curtail that behavior.

I have known people that eat low cal diets that cannot lose weight and still have cardiac issues, then I have known people that can eat all day low the fattiest foods there are and their veins are as clean as a newborn. Make some sense!

If I were obese, why would this not make perfect sense? Being fat should not affect your IQ.

Is it that the obese are deaf to those of us who are affected with the higher insurance costs ?

I too wonder how do the obese expalin away the costs to the rest of us who try to stay healthy.

I'am sorry they have extreme weight issue's, but that is not my responsibility to cover the bills.
This is just plain common sense, why would (could) anyone argue that?

The Affordable Heatlh Care Act would do well to address getting these obese patients in plans, and programs that are mandatory, still there will always be those who cannot put the fork down, and those on the Right who will cry out "Nanny" Govt., passing laws into my personal life.

Well if your personal life choices add debt to my income, your personal life is now my business, and it needs to be addessed with laws that keep my income protected from those who cannot even control their own weight.

This place is in Las Vegas. I would imagine their target market is tourists looking to indulge themselves on vacation. While it does not seem to be the most responsible business, I can't see where it is much worse than a fried food buffet. The real issue with this restaurant is that they flaunt the facts that most restaurants try to hide. If you can, look up the calories for some of the more obviously fattening entrees at your favorite restaurant. You may be surprised.

Oh... and if anything he lowered your health bill. Folks that die suddenly and young don't rack up long term/high cost bills. His heart attack probably saved at least one hip replacement, a couple of angioplasties, and a more then just a couple of months of hospice care. You on the other hand will probably demand all of those things when its time under the fashionable "I paid into the system, I deserve that plus more" mantra.

By dying of a heart attack at age 52 he will actually have far less lifetime healthcare costs than someone who lives to old age since the vast majority of the money spent is keeping the etremely elderly alive.

Finally, someone made a place where people who care nothing about their health can go to die off.

This place kills people regardless of political affiliation. Many liberals employ Darwinian logic, and this is just another result of natural selection. Be fair and blame both parties. You really think guns have nothing to do with one person's ability to slaughter 28 children in an afternoon? I'm pretty sure he couldn't have done the same feat with a bow and arrow. You think being able to purchase a 9,000+ calorie burger had nothing to do with this patron's early death? Extremists on both sides can be so ridiculously inflexible that you'll pick one side just to spite the other.

Newsflash: Guess what? It's both people and their tools that cause deaths.

Does stereotyping "libs" (any person who practices any form of liberalism) make you feel more superior to them? I hope your high horse hits an inordinately tall hurdle.

Actually – you are wrong – this kind of thing absolutely raises your insurance bill; the cost of emergency and high level lifesaving efforts are folded into everyone's premiums. Now if he'd just dropped dead that would have been different. The Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) will lower most folks' insurance premiums. Now, as for the restaurant – they seem to be more transparent as to the nutritional quality of their menu items than most. If you eat there, you KNOW what you're getting yourself into. Other restaurants may have nutritional info available, but you have to dig to find it. It's not the restaurant's fault this guy or any other regular patron suffers the consequences of eating high fat, high sodium, high cholesterol food on a regular basis. Just like ice cream, this should be a once in a while treat. I do hope he didn't suffer too long, though.

You say this, yet cigarettes and alcohol are sold legally. Personal responsibility is what it comes down to. People commit suicide by jumping off bridges...you can't make bridges illegal too?
There are in-your-face signs all over the building entrance and menu warning them of the hazards. All customers there have read them and made their decision AFTER the warnings were read. So once again, personal responsibility. I've read them myself, and decided to eat at the little bar/restaurant right across from it.

The FDA hasn't shut them down because there's nothing illegal about selling food. It's a personal choice as to where someone eats; and since just about every thing imaginable (and in many cases unimaginable) has caused someone to die at some point in history your statement is ridiculous. And by the way, use the proper spelling of your words ("sale" should have been "sell") in their proper context.

Besides, everyone knows that this food can kill you... especially the children. They study the effects of cholesterol in 2nd grade, don't they? I don't see how someone might end up getting attached to this stuff, right? It's not me paying for the plus-sized custom coffins anyway.

A quote from an Irish member of Parliament in the 1600s:
"The only way to stop this suicide wave is to make it a capital offense punishable by death."

Actually, scientists and health professionals still don't know the definite effects of cholesterol. They have been debating it for years and still can't understand why some people have high cholesterol despite healthy dis and others with unhealthy diets might have lower cholesterol. Furthermore there is no specific link between high cholesterol and heart disease or heart attacks, despite the seeminglyobvious connection.

So , no – 2nd graders don't know about cholesterol anymore than you and I do. BTW my daughter is in 2nd grade gifted program and she never heard of cholesterol.

I'm curious about health care mathematics. If a person dies early like this fellow (age 52), doesn't that save the public money since he paid in for social security and medicare but didn't get to claim it (as far as I know) since he was still pre-retirement? Everyone is writing here about how "they don't care what this guy does to himself but why should the public have to pay for his bad habits." Are you sure that's the case? Maybe he costs us LESS than the average person since he dropped dead earlier. Same for smokers.
My guess is that people who have these type of diseases cost us less if they die early and quickly, but way more if they linger and die later in life.

There is a curve on that. Particularly true for many heavy smokers, who arguably, contribute more and get less out of the healthcare system than anybody. They may cash a couple social security checks, have a couple visits to the pulmonologist on cobra health insurance they must pay for until Medicare kicks in and one night they just go to bed and they're dead the next morning – no muss, no fuss, no years of expensive medical care. Then there are those who retire early for health reasons and end up taxing the healthcare system for much of their life before they check out.

Swimmer – it's fairly complex. In this guy's case, he was a low wage earner, thus a low contributor to Social Security. His private sector economic impact had he lived would still be minimal, and he died fairly quickly from an acute event. That's a fairly extreme case. The guy was also single, no kids, only one living relative, so he was pretty much on the fringe of typical economic and social demographics. The more common situation is an individual with greater economic productivity (not only wages, but their contribution) and early onset of chronic medical conditions that kill slowly, or are extremely expensive to treat – e.g. diabetes, emphysema, COPD, many cancers.

There's no clear answer from a strictly utilitarian point of view when you look at society as whole – the only clear answers either way are from cherry picked data that supports the desired answer.

Perhaps this particular individuals untimely death saved the taxpayer money (although emergency care like he received can run tens of thousands). However, I think the uproar is more pointed at a systemic problem of obesity in our society, especially at the low end of the wage spectrum. A similar person to Mr. Alleman who, since he was utilizing public transport we will assume to be a low earner, earns less and by design contributes less to the public system. Had he not died from the heart attack (many people are saved, often a matter of luck) he would have been a strain on the healthcare system. Likewise a smoker is more likely to suffer long bouts of illnesses like COPD, lung cancer, oral cancers, etc. which canrack up tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of medical bills before they die.

Mr. Alleman ate at this establishment very often, thus clearly putting himself at significant risk, just like most smokers who, despite overwhelming evidence, choose to continue their habit. Anyone who smokes should be immediately banned from receiving publicly funded health care.

I DO start to care when people require my tax $$ because they have intentionally destroyed the body to the point where they cant take care of themselves or cover their advanced medical expenses. So I was at a popular home improvement store to get some stuff a few weeks ago and there is an employee riding around in an electric "buggy" thing which is typically available for customers, He had to have weighed 400 lbs minimum, doing nothing but riding around. You are going to have to point the finger at others also, not just this diner. American food is full of chemicals and hormones, even the so called healthy food. Did you see the special on BVO? It's absolutely disgusting that an American company would knowingly put toxic chemicals in a drink that is so readily available to kids, not to mention the adults. Yes its a free country and we are all free to eat and drink what ever we want, but even the good choices are bad. Spinach has pesticides and toxic chemical fertilizer in its leaf matter because the plant absorbed into it's system so even eating a good thing like spinach is bad for you. Meat and dairy has so many hormones in it that girls are going through puberty way too early and is giving boys man-b00bs. No one seems to notice that the antibiotics used in the meat and dairy industry are making everyone antibiotic resistant. Steroids and hormones given to cattle feed tumors and cause cancer.
All this is sure to affect mood, temprament as well as health. So when you talk about wasting tax dollars, look to everything, not just the obvious.

I strongly believe in the right to build any legitimate business, and the right of people to choose which business they will patronize, but offering a 9,982 calorie "Quadruple ByPass Burger", "Butterfat Milkshake" or "Coronary Dog" should be as against the law as producing or selling drugs. The fact they lost their most loyal patron at the age of 52 from a heart attack is proof that the Heart Attack Grill is a lethal killing machine that needs to have its operating license pulled by a responsible city government. They may as well have been offering strychnine, arsenic or other lethal poisons to their patrons.

I will contend that it is bad business to kill off your most loyal customers. This event is not good PR for the Heart Attack Grill. Hopefully, it will be a warning to others not to suffer the same fate as that of John Alleman.

I have to disagree. No one dragged the customer (if they even could) to patronize this eatery. He had a choice. Just like he had a choice to become huge and I'm sure he was warned of the consequences by more than one person. As far as being bad for business, I doubt it. Some people may even see it as a challenge or a scare dare.

You could, order one of these and split it up with a bunch of people. You can get a large pizza, but you don't have to eat it all yourself in one serving. You shouldn't ban stuff just because it is unhealthy when abused. If you are going to eat a 4 lbs burger by yourself, than you are abusing the food. If you are going to split it up, than while it may not be the most healthy thing you can eat, it isn't as bad.

A lot of people can't avoid temptation when it's right in front of them. Providing such high calorie "food" really tempts overeaters to indulge and risk their health. What a disservice to the community! They should feel a responsibility to the community to provide healthy food that keeps their patrons healthy, alive, and returning for more food in the future. Soon all their customers are going to suffer heart attacks and won't return to buy more menu items. What kind of business plan is that?

If you make everything against the law that is bad for you then you need to stop selling alcohol and tobacco as well. Both of these things have been proven to kill people so if you are going to make it against the law to serve this kind of food you have to make all things that can kill you against the law. Are you willing to do that? Are you willing to give the government that kind of control over your life? Next they would have to ban salt and sugar as well because they contribute to high blood pressure and diabetes. It is a slippery slope.

The concern here is the cost to society. I'm not even talking about the cost in loss of life, time worked, etc... I'm talking about the amount of money spent on healthcare.

Since healthcare is (generally) a pooled risk (e.g. the man wasn't paying hospital bills compeltely out of pocket), we collectively bear the cost of that risk. If someone or something is consistently increasing that risk, then we actually pay more out-of-pocket to address that risk. I'm sure everyone likes the idea of "freedom", but no one likes the idea of "cost."

Unfortunately, the things (such as this) that are the worst for you tend to be the cheapest (per calorie). Thus, the system incentivizes bad eating habits. One solution would be to increase the cost of things that are "bad for you" to offset the risk. This would still allow their consumption without having others bear the brunt of the risk.

I can get a big box of oatmeal for $2.50, a dozen eggs for $1.50, 2lbs. of apples for $2, 2lbs of cabbage for $1, a pound of onions, peppers, and potatoes all cost less than $1 each, and I've seen all of them under 50 cents per pound. That right there is less than $10 and I could easily eat for a week on that, if you need meat, you can get most cuts of chicken for under $2 per lb. and even strip steaks can be found for around $7 per pound. Most grocery stores also have an area where they have meat and vegetables at reduced prices for quick sale.

All our hard work and savings went up in a poof of smoke. Then on her deathbed she pleaded for us to finish raising her baby girls. So now our lives are on hold because of this womans life choices. My story is just one example of the untold consequences of people who refuse to take care of themselves. People say it is their life and their choice, but there is always other people who suffer because of it.

Moderation, people. Yeah, you've heard it a million times, but the responses below blaming the restaurant astounds me. Remember, "Kelso" ate too much fruit. You know, that natural stuff full of vitamins, and it nearly killed him. Now, not encouraging this as part of a healthy diet by any means, but even once a month would probably be ok here, as long as one ate healthy and exercised.
For those who thinks this guy raises our health insurance rates, that is the true ignorance. There are so many x-factors, i.e. profit margins, poor health choices, tax laws, personal responsibility (i.e. why do people go to an ER for colds nowadays? See it all the time....when I was a kid and had the flu, I stayed home and had chicken soup, not rushed to the ER with all of the other "emergency" earaches ), and numerous other factors.

Does this restaurant also serve red herring?

Jon Basso is running a fun, indulgent eatery. If people aren't smart enough to know it isn't good to eat there frequently, maybe they deserve what they have coming. That's called survival of the fittest.

Even if you order a quadruple bypass burger, no one is forcing you to eat it all in one sitting or even order it in the first place. At the end of the day, a lack of discipline is what is responsible for these deaths – not the restaurant and not "Dr." Jon.

The same logic can be made for "Smoke Shops" and tobacco growers and cigarette manufactures in general. As long as they make an effort to remind people that their product kills, then they have done their due diligence. After that, its up to the rest of us to be responsible for our actions. But again, their bad choices cost everyone else $$ if we have to pay for their interment while they die a slow death of lung cancer. What about extreme sports? When someone gets stuck on a mountain top in the winter, we still agree to rescuing that person; even if their choice was a bad one to go onto the mountain top. Often times with these cases, we send those people a rescue bill and ask them to pick up the tab.

Whats next Cancer Cafe where the feed you stuff that WILL give you cancer? Why is it smoking cigarettes and stuffing your face is no big deal until the day the doctor tells you you're dying of cancer and you go through chemotherapy why bother wasting the money on people that are still smoking and eating like pigs give it to the people that need it, cant afford it and dont smoke and eat like pigs.

I live in vegas and I ate there 3 times since it opened over year ago and theres no debate, its the most delicious, most incredible burger ever in the entire history of mankind. Having said that, theres a reason why I only ate there 3 times, its very unhealthy for you. Though unlike most people in this country (liberals obviously) I was born with common sense and the ability to use logic. If you go to the gym and have a normal diet like humans were meant to have then every now and then you can have this incredible 9,000 calorie monster of pure greatness. Or you can be a complete jerk and eat this stuff all the time while never going to the gym and die of a hard attack. Its should be every americans right to have the choice if they want to eat there or not and choose if they want to be healthy or be a pig and die early so its so sad for me to see so many people (mostly idiot liberals obviously) saying this place should be shut down. so for everyone who feels that way do this country a favor and move to cuba so you can get a reality check in your uptight life!

Good sense is ignorant of politics. I'm a liberal, and I've got the good sense not to eat at a joint like that even once. A fast-food meal is one thing. But I'm not stuffing myself with a 9,000 calorie hamburger regardless of how good it's supposed to taste. That's just gluttonous.

I'm also a proud progressive liberal and I'd never eat at such a place. When it comes right down to it, all we have really is our health. I intend to live a long life. My hubby and I both love to cook and we can make food better than most restaurants without the valve clogging , heart stopping fat and calories. My only vice is pistachio/almond ice cream. The Heart Attack grill is not a good business plan when your food kills and your concept is morbid – eventually all your clients will be dead. Kinda like tobacco companies.

wow...it is amazing the stupidity that some have displayed with their comments. Really, you bring politics into this? Did you read the article? Wait, maybe you didnt understand the article. So let me explain it to you. This place makes a great burger you said so yourself. It took you three times to go there to realize it was unhealthy. So if a patient goes to a DR and the DR over medicates them and they die is that shame on the DR. IF a Customer goes into this establishment and eats food that is being made and knowingly being made very unhealthy then it is the customers fault. Dont get me wrong.. it is process of elimination the customers know this is unhealthy however so does the owner. FOr the love of Pete, his own PR person died from this crap.. but it cant all be just the customers fault.

how does this owner lay his head down on his pillow and sleep at night knowing he is killing individuals with his food. This entire thing is ridiculous and the anti liberal guy can take his politics and shove them. Trust me that is healthier than the three times you have eaten at the establishment.

God gave man free will not Congress. Therefore it's not the right of Congress to take free will away. Why do we let them do it? Free enterprise also has free will. It's their choice to utilize this campaign to promote their facility just as it is every patron's right to choose to eat there. Bless the family of the individual who passed, but you can't blame the restaurtant because the man chose to eat there, and apparently chose not to exercise to keep his body healthy.

    • Patrick

If you actually took some time to really think about it, you would quickly realize that free will is simply an illusion. Everything we say and do is based on our past experiences. That is all our "decisions" are, the result of interactions between our genetic inheritance and our life experiences.
In this case, over eating for this man is simply something he was unable to control. Most likely due to emotional trauma or self-esteem issues. It is sad really.
Finally, if you want to over eat and get fat, then you must take responsibility for that and not expect the rest of society to pay for your bloated health-care cost.

Had this place been closer to the finish line, I'd have gotten my post-race Victory Burger from there...thus nullifying the thousands of calories I burned during the race. Instead, I ended up getting an animal-style double-double at In n' Out burger. Good times! • LJ

The thing is, it's not about a broken law, broken laws are handled in criminal court and nobody is suing anybody in criminal court. Suing refers to civil court, all that needs to be done there to sue in criminal court is prove negligence, is it negligent to sell a 9,000 calories burger? Is it negligent to repeatedly sell a 9,000 calorie burger repeatedly, day after day to a customer with obvious dyslipidemia? Not to mention the whole fact that he calls himself Dr. and refers to his customers as patients, how obvious to the patrons is the sarcasm of it all? Then there's the fact that if the nutritional information isn't clearly posted, sure the customer knew the food was unhealthy, but did he have any way of actually knowing how unhealthy it was? In other words, to get sued does not require a law to be broken in the slightest, and you could see how much fun a lawyer could have trying to convince 12 people that negligence was involved at least in part.

How does the argument "obese people become a burden to the healthcare system and should therefore be taxed" make any sense? If a person who has been contributing to medicaire their whole lives gets cancer, its going to cost more to care for them. But thats ok, because everyone including them has been contributing and not all of us are so unlucky as to get cancer and need more expensive care (or else the system would be unsustainable) The point of these systems is to care for people affected by conditions, how about people born with Thyroid issues? Yes its a small portion of the populous but singling out any ones person health condition and being a burden to our healthcare system is never ok. Can you force cigarette smokers to pay more for healthcare? Maybe indirectly by taxing squares then re-directing the profits, but not directly and the same applies to this, you could tax being fat or eating fat foods all you want but it will not get to the source of the problem which is the individuals education on the subject.

I see your point jillian but allow me to counter your concerns: I would say in circumstances like (most) cancers and conditions like Thyroid issues are ones from factors directly out of our control while issues like obesity and lung cancer from smoking are directly preventable. It would be along the lines of paying the same for car insurance for a regular soccer mom and a professional Indy race driver. Both drive cars.. however and accident with the soccer mom is far less predictable than say an Indy car driver.. yet the soccer mom would be paying the same as the racecar driver. Again, the issue is for diseases and conditions that are not directly preventable insurance should cover but for issues that are directly preventable by following common sense guidelines – and then abusing them – should not get covered in my opinion. If someone obese or that smokes gets a condition that came not directly from eating or smoking, say, a broken bone or whatever, yes, it then should be covered.

In her 30's she had the bones of a 70 year old. Now at 48 she has had heart surgery and many health issues. I am the same age and 108 lbs, run marathons, lift weights, and eat clean. My Doctor wishes he had my numbers in blood work.

All of you complainers should take note that this restaurant is located in Vegas. The whole point of going there is to overindulge and do the wrong thing. If its not eating mass amounts of bad food its alcohol, gambling, and prostitution. The heart attack grill is hardly the worst thing in town.

It's morally wrong to run a business like this. Does he have a right to glorify the process of eating oneself to death? Sure. But it's a bloody awful shame that this guy is making a living while slowly killing his patrons. About as much as cigarette makers, only this guy's victims die a lot more quickly and with less pain.

No, it's not. It would be morally wrong if he, or the cigarette companies, were deceiving customers. But everybody knows that cigarettes and excessive eating are bad for your health. Anyone going into that place knows what they're in for, and no one's forcing it down their throat. Calling it morally wrong is equivalent to calling automobile manufacturers morally wrong for making cars, knowing that some of their customers will get into deadly collisions.

As some have said... It's food. There's nothing stopping his customers from ordering one of his burgers, taking it home, and eating a playing card desk-sized portion every day for a week with the compliment of fresh vegetables and fruit. People make the conscious choice to sit at those tables and eat 9,000+ calories in one sitting and accept the consequences.

Hopefully this article gives the rest of us a reason not to do the same.

Morally wrong? I dont think so. Is a liquor store morally wrong because they sell to alcoholics? What about a pharmacy that sells to those addicted to pain meds? Or the corner market that sells cigarettes to the guy who ends up with lung cancer? Morals have nothing to do with it. The deceased (RIP) ate there of his own free will and had he made a different chance, odds are he would be alive. It was not the owners morals but the customer's choice that caused he death.

        No way!
It shouldn't even be in business
        Other (please share below)

You can say you have eaten there. You can say you won't eat there even though you want to, but there is no option to say you would eat there. You would have to use the 'other' option. The poll is biased, even if unintentionally so.

  249. No Health Nut--Just Not Stupid

I don't understand why people are making "eating until you die" part of heir business model. When are we going to start being smarter as a nation, as a species???? Sure, every business person needs some gimmick, something catchy to draw customers. BUT, there is a limit to what should be allowable. You're going to have people out there saying "we should be able to do anything we want, eat what we want", and the assumption is we're not hurting anyone else, so leave us alone.

Okay, then why do we have seatbelt laws, helmet laws, drinking and driving laws? Why don't we have "overeating-until-we-give-ourselves-heart-attack" laws? I'm all about taking care of our frail, elderly, homeless, kids, etc, WITHIN REASON and when they've been responsible contributing citizes (the adults) and now are in need of care because of age or disease. But when we overindulge to the point it makes us sick, diseased, or otherwise unable to take care of ourselves, then those people shouldn't be allowed to become burdens to society. (This particular man died, so there is no "care" needed, but many overeaters, indulge to the point of obesity and then need health care or hospital care because of diabetes or other health problems). I don't see anyone raising their hands to care for alcoholics or drug addicts. Sure it happens, but it's not a preferred system, and all of those people are looked down upon. Why are we glorifying overeating and indulging in our society?

We should be glorifying people who take care of themselves, are responsible, healthy (not obsessively so, but still...). I'm so f**king sick of our arrogant, overindulging nation...you just don't see this type of thing on a regular basis in other countries...

The sad part is that if people stop over indulge companies would lose $$$, so it's not going to happen. From pop to chips to fast food , it's all about the bottom line. You can't fight the big companies and expect to win, I do wish they have cheaper health care and benefits for fit people instead, I play tennis 2-3 times a week hit the gym 1x ,surf and eat healthy I really wish I had benefits for staying in good health.
This country is run on $$$ and no pride , sorry it's a no win situation . Just worry about yourself.

Seriously? What planet are you from? Snack food companies operate on the thinnest of profit margins. The real money-makers in the food world are those selling health foods of all kinds – organic produce and meat, trendy small-farm produce, supplements and the lot all command a huge markup in comparison to potato chips or whoppers. All you need do is note that Whole Foods – which capitalizes on this model – is one of the fastest growing, most profitable corporations in the country, with staggering markups compared to more mainstream grocers.

Eating healthy is for the rich, and is ultimately unsustainable.

Its sad that even a huge sign in bright neon lights clearly explaining the danger of eating at the restaurant one is still compelled to eat there. Then the person dies of a heart attack by eating regularly at where else "The Heart Attack Grill". If anything this should add to already large amount of evidence on how important a healthy diet is to preventing disease specifically a heart attack. Obviously, people going to this establishment do not care about drastically increasing their chances of dying prematurely from cardiovascular disease, but hopefully it will encourage hose who want to live a healthy and relatively long and disease free life not to repeat their mistakes. Long term health is more important than a temporary sense indulgence which will eventually cost you your life.

Because of the externalities. We all are required to pay for healthcare now, and people that treat their bodies like garbage dumps cost more to care for. That raises the costs for everyone else. Maybe we need a FAT TAX instead of a FLAT TAX.

        February 13, 2013 at 5:31 am | Reply
        • BSKB

We need to not pay for everyone else. We don't need a government micromanaging every decision to determine what is and isn't healthy. Even if it isn't a matter of core philosophy, it makes people directly aware of the costs of their decision. By adding a layer of government action, people are insulated from the true costs of their choices. The fat tax might come nowhere near the true costs of their poor choices.

It shouldn't be illegal because of one thing... The name of the restaurant says it all and if you choose to go there, it is your problem.

They clearly tell you that their food may (and most likely will) give you a heart attack, so really they are letting you make the choice.
