Milk as we know it has been around since animals were domesticated. When man started treating cows, sheep and goats as livestock, milk became a staple of the human diet. Not only is milk high in proteins and vitamins, it also contains calcium which promotes healthy bone growth.
Some people might remember the days when a milk man would replace your empty glass jugs of milk with full ones. While that delivery method isn’t as popular these days, milk still is.
These days, milk is a major industry, and with that comes competition. Soy and almond milk might not have the history that regular milk does, but they do appeal to a niche market of people who might be lactose intolerant, or just looking for a healthier alternative.
Aside from adding milk to your cereal or making hot chocolate, milk has many uses in the kitchen. From mashed potatoes to mac and cheese to crème caramel, milk plays a prominent part in making some of our favorite dishes creamier.
