The world lost an important teacher, poet and excellent, barbecue-loving soul this weekend in the form of Jake Adam York. He passed away at the age of 40 from the effects of a massive stroke, and we can't help but think about having heard him read his stunning work in person this past October at the Southern Foodways Alliance annual symposium in Oxford, Mississippi. We cooked a lot of BBQ in our home-made and movable cinder block pit at our family's land - going back five generations, but Jake and Joe were the great pit-masters. Lots of pork, lots of beer, and plenty of quality bourbon. One thing I taught them, if you're going to drink bourbon, drink well. Thank you all for the comments and memories.. I think today might be dedicated to BBQ and bourbon in his honor. We are so honored to have been his parents and to watch his dedication to his art and his craft and to see his strong social conscience revealed in his work and through his world of friends. Thanks for loving him and his work... Jake's family...

I've gotten to know his brother Joe, who is a similarly lovely soul. This is more loss to the world, in the midst of too much already.
