Aliya's Food Limited, a Canadian exporter of Indian food products, announced Monday that it has issued a recall of 4,865 pounds of frozen butter chicken and rice products on fears of listeria contamination.

Following suit, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a public alert because affected products were imported to the United States and sold at the Trader Joe's chain of grocery stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington D.C.

The tainted products are: "12.5 oz boxes of "Trader Joe's Butter Chicken with Basmati Rice" with product code "2012-10-31" and lot code "30512."

Click here for the retail distribution list per the FSIS

Customers with additional questions can contact Trader Joe's at (626)-599-3817.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, listeria is an organism that can cause foodborne illness. Symptoms of infection may include fever, muscle aches, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. Pregnant women and adults with weakened immune systems are at the greatest risk and most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill.

"Butter Chicken with Basmati Rice and Llisteria" now that would have been okay to sell because of the disclosure.

I didn't know that the president was now giving cooking classes. This has nothing to do with politics, except maybe to you. Why is that, I wonder?

There are too many chicken, beef scares lately. I buy everything fresh from farms at http://www.americasfarmstand.com

It's funny how people use this one incident to bash Trader Joe's, and Indians too. It's like no American firms have ever had a recall before. Idiots.

Went to a Trader Joe's once. I don't see what the big deal is? Lot of stuff looks worse then Aldi and no brand stuff but costs three times as much.I think people here in the US think our food chain has problems. Its way better then some of these Countries where Trader Joe stuff comes from.

Ha! I'm safe, the Tikka Masala is way better than the Butter Chicken so that's all I buy!

At least I now know why it tastes exactly like the Tikka Masala I had for lunch everyday when I had an assignment in India a few years ago. :)

Totally agree with that! Tikka Masala is only one I get as well... nice white meat chicken in it!

Indian food is either Dravidian or Aryan. They are both good, the food in question is Aryan. Non-aryan non indo-european people (such as asiatics, orientals, or middle easterners) are not supposed to and not expected to understand Aryan cuisine (and this is just the way the swastika, shubjtika and laltika using Aryans like it).

It seems to me that Trader Joe's has a problem. I know there was salmonella with the peanut butter now the frozen dinner. I've heard of other recalls, but can't recall what they were. They have also refused to sign the agreement not to sell Genetically Modified Food. I would rather do business with Whole Foods. I haven't heard of any recalls and they have signed the agreement not to sell Genetically Modified Food.

No. They pulled all the peanut butter as a precaution. Americans are so dumb.

You know that Whole Foods sells GMO foods, right?

      December 4, 2012 at 1:22 pm |
    • JMozz

I used to think that about Whole Foods until the GMO label proposition 37 in California failed and I found out about the companies funding the efforts against the bill. Cascadian Farms (owned by General Mills), Kashi (owned by Kellogg), Silk, Horizon Organic (owned by Dean Foods) all make hot-selling products at Whole Foods. They all make GMO products. How did Whole Foods react to the proposition? They quietly supported it instore to appease shoppers, but didn't give a dime toward the efforts against it until the final days before the election. A measly 25k from a 17 billion dollar company. Against millions spent by the food industry and chemical companies to defeat it. Basically, they looked the part of being pro-GMO labeling in the face of customers but really wanted it to just go away.

Eating meat is not the problem. But eating FACTORY FARM MEAT certainly is. Corporate Run Meat Industry does not care one bit about the public's health or safety.

Mass produced food is the problem, especially with these large corporations that can process 18 million pounds of turkey?
The food industry is really owned by 3 main corporations, the labels and different names on the products are to let the sheep follow without question. Learning how to grow your own food, and relying less on the quick, fast, and over processed food that has come in contact with several metal machines and sprayed with chemicals to disinfect cannot be good for anyone.

I'm waiting to hear about a recall on the sweet potato fries. The last bag I got, some of the fries tasted like they had been sprayed with Windex.

I also got my turkey for Thanksgiving from them. The meat was substandard (tough, not due to my usual cooking method), and there were still plenty of feather quills that took me 10 minutes to pluck.

Very sad. I do like shopping there, but the quality has gone downhill quickly. Were they recently purchased by another company, I wonder?

correction; they were 'started' by a guy named Joe in Pasadena California.. subsequently the 'big German company' purchased the operation and expanded it substantially. They are still an innovative and cost effective source of food products.. and their inventory management is first rate. Not to mention their treatment and support of employees.

    Trader Joe,
I think your days of trading with unscrupulous vendors is quickly coming to a close. First, it was peanut butter; now mere weeks later it's another brand of your over priced, over hyped food products. Substandard food and over pricing is not trendy; oh well, back to Safeway & Albertsons.

American's should be given the ability to decide who can work here and who cannot. Not Indians from India. Once you get your citizenship , do come back.

Even liberal , Michael Moore, has emphatically stated: Each country should hire their own people first. It's common sense.

Indians in this country are riding high on a wave of American greed among people like Bill Gates. But the American people will eventually prevail. Not socialism, Democracy! One American , One vote!
