Aliya's Food Limited, a Canadian exporter of Indian food products, announced Monday that it has issued a recall of 4,865 pounds of frozen butter chicken and rice products on fears of listeria contamination. Following suit, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a public alert because affected products were imported to the United States and sold at the Trader Joe's chain of grocery stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington D.C. The tainted products are: "12.5 oz boxes of "Trader Joe's Butter Chicken with Basmati Rice" with product code "2012-10-31" and lot code "30512." Customers with additional questions can contact Trader Joe's at (626)-599-3817. According to the Food and Drug Administration, listeria is an organism that can cause foodborne illness. Symptoms of infection may include fever, muscle aches, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. Pregnant women and adults with weakened immune systems are at the greatest risk and most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill. Consumer resources: |

Went to a Trader Joe's once. I don't see what the big deal is? Lot of stuff looks worse then Aldi and no brand stuff but costs three times as much.I think people here in the US think our food chain has problems. Its way better then some of these Countries where Trader Joe stuff comes from.

It seems to me that Trader Joe's has a problem. I know there was salmonella with the peanut butter now the frozen dinner. I've heard of other recalls, but can't recall what they were. They have also refused to sign the agreement not to sell Genetically Modified Food. I would rather do business with Whole Foods. I haven't heard of any recalls and they have signed the agreement not to sell Genetically Modified Food.

I used to think that about Whole Foods until the GMO label proposition 37 in California failed and I found out about the companies funding the efforts against the bill. Cascadian Farms (owned by General Mills), Kashi (owned by Kellogg), Silk, Horizon Organic (owned by Dean Foods) all make hot-selling products at Whole Foods. They all make GMO products. How did Whole Foods react to the proposition? They quietly supported it instore to appease shoppers, but didn't give a dime toward the efforts against it until the final days before the election. A measly 25k from a 17 billion dollar company. Against millions spent by the food industry and chemical companies to defeat it. Basically, they looked the part of being pro-GMO labeling in the face of customers but really wanted it to just go away.
Eating meat is not the problem. But eating FACTORY FARM MEAT certainly is. Corporate Run Meat Industry does not care one bit about the public's health or safety.

The food industry is really owned by 3 main corporations, the labels and different names on the products are to let the sheep follow without question. Learning how to grow your own food, and relying less on the quick, fast, and over processed food that has come in contact with several metal machines and sprayed with chemicals to disinfect cannot be good for anyone.

I'm waiting to hear about a recall on the sweet potato fries. The last bag I got, some of the fries tasted like they had been sprayed with Windex.
I also got my turkey for Thanksgiving from them. The meat was substandard (tough, not due to my usual cooking method), and there were still plenty of feather quills that took me 10 minutes to pluck.
Very sad. I do like shopping there, but the quality has gone downhill quickly. Were they recently purchased by another company, I wonder?

correction; they were 'started' by a guy named Joe in Pasadena California.. subsequently the 'big German company' purchased the operation and expanded it substantially. They are still an innovative and cost effective source of food products.. and their inventory management is first rate. Not to mention their treatment and support of employees.

i've been sick from lots of foods at trader joes. worst was the pot stickers. sick for days from that. the olive jars aren't sealed a lot of times. check the tops. the lids are supposed to be dented in, but most of theirs aren't. ascorbic acid from trader joes is corn if you have that allergy or are finding that you get sick from them (and other vitamins). i am careful about shopping there.
What another recall again for Trader Joe's? Something is wrong with that place – maybe they're too money hungry and just not dealing with reputable firms. Definitely considering not shopping there anymore.
