Interested in trying terrapin? A handwritten recipe from the mid-1800s on how to stew those adorable aquatic turtles might just do the trick.

“Remember to remove the toe nails,” reads the weathered, barely legible recipe card.

The staff at the University of Iowa Libraries scanned and uploaded this recipe, along with thousands of others, from handwritten American and European cookbooks from the 1600s to the 1960s.

This is the latest effort by the University of Iowa Libraries to transcribe history through the power of the internet, and it’s a rare opportunity for both serious historians and food lovers alike to get a taste of bygone times.

Israel reels in restrictions on Gaza fishermen

Ahmed Ferwana has a cookout coming up, one that's been years in the making. The English teacher in Gaza City is excited because his friends will be cooking a fish they haven't been able to buy in years.

Ferwana says the taste of this fish when cooked on the grill with spices is indescribable. He added that this fish, its name is translated as locus, is also a favorite because it has fewer bones than others.

Ferwana has missed this fish because of restrictions imposed on Gaza's coastline. Citing security concerns, weapons smuggling and the desire to prevent attacks, Israel restricted Gaza's fishing to only three nautical miles from shore. That's meant a small supply of fish and high prices for years.

While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday.

Pucker up! November 29 is National Lemon Cream Pie Day.

Winter is when most of the brilliantly colored citrus fruits, like lemons, shine brightest. Snap out of "Bah, humbug!" mode with the sweet tang of lemon cream pie.

When it comes to the sweet concoction, the classic interpretation involves baking lemon juice, eggs, sugar and heavy cream in a gingersnap crust. If you're not quite in a Susie Homemaker state of mind, a box of lemon pudding mix for the filling always works too.
