The United States Food Safety and Inspection Service announced that 2,310 pounds of ground beef products from Utah and 4,100 pounds of ground beef products from Hawaii are being recalled on fears that they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. Consumers with questions regarding the recall should contact the company's vice president, Sheldon Wright, at 808-531-3591. Products in the Utah recall were produced by Main Street Quality Meats and include 10-pound cases labeled "Ground Beef Bulk" and 12-pound cases labeled "Ground Beef Patties." Each case bears the establishment number "EST. 19916" inside the USDA mark of inspection, as well as any of the "1018121," "1019121," "1018122," or "1019122." The products were produced on October 18 and October 19, 2012, and were distributed to restaurants in Utah. Consumers with questions regarding the recall should contact the company's food safety coordinator, Scott Schmidt, at 801-484-5295. According to the FSIS, the recall of ground beef products from both Hawaii and Utal occurred as a result of the products testing positive for E. coli O157:H7 and being shipped prior to the company receiving test results. There have been no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of the meat. Both recalls are categorized by the FSIS as "Class I": a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death. Consumers with food safety question are encouraged to contact "Ask Karen," the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov. The toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from l0 am to 4 pm ET Monday through Friday. - Fast facts on E. coli Consumers are advised to only consume ground beef that has been cooked all the way through to an internal temperature of 160°F. We never used to have repeated health scares like this. It started when Bush defunded agricultural regulation, and Obama has not been able to get controls back in place.
You're so full of s@#$ it gives me e coli contamination just reading your comment.....
So then you're a history major eh Scooter?
So then you're a history major.
After hearing about pink slime, what it was and how produced, stopped eating meat for sure! All the antibiotics in the meats and hormones, makes me realize where all the cancers and illnesses are created. NO MORE MEAT!
Reblogged this on TribPress News.
Somebody sliced open the animals guts and they spilled all over the meat and then they processed this meat anyway.
Gotta love CEO's. Real moral people.
.
Yikes, the lack of science in the comments is quite scary. E. Coli outbreaks are due to contamination which happens at the butcher (or processing plant) and indicates a failure in the sanitation protocols during the processing. E. Coli occurs naturally in the intestinal tract of mammals, and the strains that cause problems in humans are generally not harmful to cattle. It has nothing to do with what the cattle are fed, whever they were given antibiotics, raised in a feedlot, treated nicely, etc. It is pretty much solely dependant on whether any fecal matter made its way from the slaughtering area to the processing area.
Exactly right. Bush-era defunding and deregulation have allowed meat producers to grow careless.
In fact, this particular strain of E. Coli exists in much smaller numbers in the intestinal tacts of cattle that are finished on a grass diet. Grain consumption alters the PH of the bovine intestinal tract, and is what allowed this particular (deadly) stain of E. Coli to develop, not having been detected until 1982.

America makes tainted meat products
If you eat mayo (which I don't YUCK!) aren't you eating raw eggs?
No, you're eating mayo (YUM!!!).
Grass fed and finished beef that never sees a feed lot. Problem solved.
Feedlots are cheaper, and thus save money for our cherished corporations. Isn't that worth the risk of stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, possible kidney failure, disability and death? It is if you love America!
Sorry to inform you, but grass-fed cattle host just as many E. coli as feedlot cattle do. They're a normal component of all mammalian guts.
Grassfed vs. feedlot has nothing to do with e coli. It occurs naturally in cattle's guts and it contaminates the meat when a processing plant is sloppy after the animal has been slaughtered.
This is why we need to get rid of silly, wasteful government agencies like FSIS and the FDA. Doesn't your heart bleed for the poor corporations who are going to lose money because they can't sell this "tainted" meat to the public? What you do with a product like this is simply mark it down for a quickie bargain sale...that way, poor people buy it instead of the well-to-do. If they get sick they can always go to the ER, right?
and yet people still complain about big government. think about how much worse this e coli outbreak and recent meningitis outbreak would have been if there wasn't government oversight to catch it.
As long as farming in this country continues the trend of maximizing every dollar out of every square yard, you will have this happen. When you take a species like a cow, breed out all differences in the cow to obtain one specialized type with the genes you want, and then you pack this single species into a densely packed feed lot, you give virii and bacterium like E.Coli to flourish. This is why the cows are pumped full of antibiotics. Some cows are so heavily doped up that you can't even use their manure.
You often seen E.Coli out breaks on non-animal products like Canteloupe and Spinach because dust particles containing the disease travel through the air from this cattle farm to another farm in the area.
Farms need to go back to the old ways. Of Healing the land, not destroying it. Of using the closed cycle of life to re-use the land and create harmony. To spending a couple dollars more at the store to buy your food because it costs a few more dollars to grow. Let the local farmer fluorish, let the STATE control their own agriculture. Why are are letting the federal government dictate what we eat and how it's grown? The USDA has only ever hurt small farmers since it's inception. Do we need 2000 dollar TVs and unhealthy cheap food?
I'm not saying regulation is bad, I'm not saying american capitalism/squeezing every dollar is bad. What I'm saying is that America needs to change it's attitude on food.
Dust particles containing the disease?!?! LOL dude seriously get a clue.
E coli is transfered via feces. Vegetables are grown in farmers animals droppings as fertilizer. This is why crap loaded with bacteria will cause e coli on vegetables.
Meat that has Ecoli is tained with feces.

Is 4 clues enough for you? Go educate yourself before you open your mouth.
yum yum eat em up.
Yes, it is my greatest joy to end up dead and ground up into something a big fat slob chows down upon. I have no feelings or fears. I don't take care of my children. I feel no pain so I love being beaten and butchered on behalf of man"kind."
..uhh, YEAH, that would be because you're a COW. You know,non-sentient? Has no concept of self, pending death, etc? Sure they feel pain, but that's the price they pay for being food animals. What did you think God gave us to eat, anyway? Grass? Dirt? Rocks? ...gee to hard to cook and get nuntrition from. Wait! Lets eat meat! Besides ground beef only has problems because the store managers, anxious to make more profit from unsuspecting consumers, take that old ground beef when it's on it's last day, and re-grind it with newer product to "freahen' it up a bit. which is why you get that gray looking hamburger in the middle of the loaf of pink, freah-looking hamburger.
Actually, look in Genesis (of your bible). You will see that God intended us to be vegetarians (or vegan), but it was man's fall that made killing/eating meat a part of our lives.
When I clicked on the link saying "2,310 pounds of bad beef recalled", I was expecting to read a story about the Kardashians series being cancelled. E. coli? Who cares.
I was waiting for you to say something witty or funny. Still waiting.
It is funny that they never tell you that theE. Coli outbreaks is a result of what is fed to the cows. Corn is fed to the cows. The cows develop these illnesses like E. Coli and thus the reason they need to be pumped with antibiotics. This in turn causes certain strains of bacteria to be immune to certain medicines which results in problems like MRSA. If the cows were fed grass like they are supposed to eat, we would not have so many of these problems.
You have NO IDEA what you're talking about.
Dude ITS ECOLI. Ecoli is transferred via feces. That means this meat had turds in it and people were going to eat it and get sick.
You are talking about something completely different.
Fail
No, actually he is correct. E. coli builds up in the gut of ruminants that are not fed a diet that allows them to ruminate (i.e., grass). It is then transmitted via the feces. Feedlots compound the problem, because the cows are kept indoors and their manure is all around them and rubs off on their bodies, instead of being deposited in a sunny field where it quickly dries up and turns to compost. Nature is built to cleanse itself. Man has to compensate by using products such as ammonia to cleanse the meat he contaminates, but sometimes he doesn't get it all and that's when you have an outbreak.
Uh – no. E. coli is a normal inhabitant of mammalian intestinal tracts, and all cows harbor them in vast numbers – whether grass-fed, corn-fed or grazing naturally in some idyllic free range pasture.
The USDA just approved beef imports from Fukushima…depopulation anyone?
Eat mor chiken!
Why eat more chicken, so we can get salmonella?
Dude, just cook the meat all the way through. Don't eat it any less than medium for beef, or well done for chicken, and you'll be just fine.
Just don't go to Chic-Fil-A, or the heterophobes will get their knickers in a twist.
Is there any wonder I don't eat meat?
A couple people died last year eating tainted cantaloupe so..... GIGGIDY!
LOL!
Because you like the taste of E. coli – tainted lettuce more?
You Americans should try some Canadian beef. Oh wait, ours also has been recalled for E-coli. Yummy
How many animals lives need to be wasted and billions of revenue lost before people wake and realize that factory farming isn't sustainable and doesn't work? It sickens me that all those animals were raised and slaughtered in cruel conditions, only for their sacrifice to amount to NOTHING.
How much more land would we need to grow soy breans and make tofu? JK. I do understand where you're coming from though. We're fortunate enough to have a few acres to raise our own cows and hogs. Home grown, grass fed beef is the only way to go.
...except that factory farming does work. It successfully feeds an entire nation. And when there are bacterial outbreaks, the recall system catches it pretty fast.
Consuming meat of any kind is nothing short of barbaric. You people deserve every disease, sickness and malady you get.
Although I share your opinion on a plant based diet your compassion for animals should be expanded to your fellow human beings you should seek to educate rather than chastise
I was eating a head of lettuce one day and you could hear the screams coming from it you twit
Rather than spout off your opinions in an abrasive and offensive manner that no one will respond to positively and will never change someone's opinion to your side, why don't you try to educate about the virtues of eating local, small farm meat that is humanely raised? You can't force someone to become a vegan, but you can try to improve the lives of the animals that people do continue to consume. I've never heard of anyone becoming vegan because someone yelled at them enough about it, but informing people about how most meat is raised and showing them another option can and does work.
I understand your position Vegann but the fact is mankind wouldn't have survived this long without eating meat. BTW vegetables are also commonly contaminated with the same bateria. So I hope you also get E coli and poop your pants ;)
When you deprive your small children of B12 and they die, don't expect me to give a sh!t. And BTW, unless your wonderful soy is fermented, all your doing is poisoning yourself. Have a nice day.
All the food we eat is alive. You wouldn't be here to type this if you hadn't killed something to ingest it.
YES!! WE LOVE YOU TOO!!! IN all your Docuchey-ness
Unlike vegetarians, I at least make sure my food has been killed before I eat it.
Eat grass fed...visit your local farmers and butchers for meat that was raised right and processed correctly. And if you think its too expensive, compare it to a hospital bill...
Washing there hands after a poop is also a good idea
If you see how cows are processed in this country, you'd understand why there's CRAP in the meat. Cows are raised in packed feedlots where they are given antibiotics to prevent diseases and hormones to grow fast. They crap in each other's faces. They are inhumanely raised, and we're paying the price with our health. Kids are going through puberty faster, people are getting cancer and other diseases. Ecoli is no surprise.
Well aren't you just the little ray of happiness?
ignoring the problem won't make it go away.
Really? Gosh. I never knew that. THANK YOU for that clarity. I'll live a better life now because of you.
Actually, they spend only the last 20-25% of their life in a feedlot, if they go there at all . . . they aren't "raised" in feedlots.
Yes, they get crapped on, but you know what – so do animals 'on the farm'. You will never talk to a person who raises beef animals who will honestly tell you that that never happens. You know what else? They crap in their water supply. Yep, guaranteed. So now everybody gets to drink the crapped-in water. 99% of them, no matter where they were "raised" or 'finished', are going to be shipped to slaughter. Chances are way above 50/50 that multiple animals get crapped on while they're on the truck, too.
All you people with these grandiose ideas of the "perfection" of the non-feedlot life have no flipping idea of what it's really like unless you've lived it, and the vast majority of you haven't.
"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."
The ocassional e coli outbreak is acceptable. Not even the fruit and vegetable industry is immune to e coli, listeria, salmonella, etc.
Para 6, "...the recall of ground beef products from both Hawaii and Utal..."
I swear CNN, you do a bad job just to test me. Is "Utal" the mormon or non-mormon portion of Utah?
Thank you. And how about this one in Paragraph 4: "The products were produced on October 18 and October 19, 2012, and were distributed by to restaurants in Utah..." I'm wondering if that should be "to" or "two"? Or is the "to" a typo and it means the products were distributed BY restaurants? Or they "by" is a typo and they were distributed TO restaurants? Either way, WHICH restaurants would be nice to know.
Good to know the spelling and grammer Nazi's are patrolling.
You will all be pleased to know the author has been sent to the camps.
We all feel better now that the OCD is out of our systems.
Maybe that kind of journalism is acceptable where you live. In the USA it's considered unprofessional.
