Cattle farmers struggling with record corn prices are feeding their cows candy instead.
That's right, candy. Cows are being fed chocolate bars, gummy worms, ice cream sprinkles, marshmallows, bits of hard candy and even powdered hot chocolate mix, according to cattle farmers, bovine nutritionists and commodities dealers.
"It has been a practice going on for decades and is a very good way to for producers to reduce feed cost, and to provide less expensive food for consumers," said Ki Fanning, a livestock nutritionist with Great Plains Livestock Consulting, Inc. in Eagle, Neb.

Between the drought & the stupid (and ineffectual) ethanol subsidies of the US government, it's no wonder the corn prices are out of whack.
Grass fed and finished beef, problem solved. It is healthier and tastes far better than feed lot garbage.
Would it make people feel better if it was candy corn?
Think of the sugare content of the milk they yield. As someone with high blood sugar, does this mean I should drink less milk?
I think you will find that most of the "candy" is being fed to beef cattle instead of dairy cattle.
The "sugar" in their diet does not go directly into the milk, anyway, so it's not likely feeding candy to dairy cattle leads to a spike in the lactose content in the milk. (They aren't eating 'pure' candy, either . . . it's only a small fraction of the total feed ration.)
Feeding candy to cows is not really a new idea. Back when Milton Hershey utilized milk from local PA dairies, most of the waste chocolate was broken up sent out to the farmers to mix with silage to feed the cows in the winter months.
so....let's put more corn in our gasoline! Nothing like paying more for fuel. Anybody out think that ethanol will solve the energy issues?
Why hasn't it done so before now?z
Last years drought caused a pasture and feed shortage resulting in cattle producers selling off most of their herds (yours truly included). Cows do good on grass but need corn and other grains when they are being "finished" for market. Our stupidity with ethanol, which also causes premature component failures in auto's, caused corn prices to rise and that impacted all food products that contain corn. Candy for cows really won't add much to muscle mass or carcass quality. So you'll pay higher prices for a product of less quality. The stupidity of our folks in D.C. is mind bogling. I believe that it takes almost ten gallons of water to produce a gallon of ethanol. Let's see, we are still in a drought and we are wasting water on ethanol, brilliant NOT. Not only the waste of water but ethanol has 85% the btu's of gas.
Nope they never need corn or grain of any kind at any time, period. The only reason to do that is for USDA grading, which is completely bogus.
I eat only grass fed and finished beef and it is superior to any grain fed beef.
Hang a carcass that has been finished with corn or barley and compare the marbling, to one who was just fed grass, no comparision. No doubt you need to be concerned about the additives that might be added to the grain BUT if you read the feed sacks most straight corn or barley feed is "clean" There is a reason USDA grades beef, if the carcass has less marbling / muscle mass the poorer the overall qualliy of the meat. In addition, depending on where you live some farmers fertilize their grass due to excessive rains which wash nutirents out of the soil. These fertilizers have all kind of chemicals added, not a good deal. We raise our own and put them on hay and grain for the last four weeks, you can't buy a better piece of meat unless you go to Japan and by kobi steaks
I would put the beef I get up against yours any day knowing full well it's better. But again, do what you think you have to do, I simply will not waste my money on inferior beef.
I talk to the farmers in my areas, I know exactly what they all do, none of them fertilize or use chemicals. It simply isn't needed.
Proper finishing with a grain-enhanced diet literally changes the make-up of the fat in the animal, which also changes the taste of the meat. A large portion of the population prefer "grain-fed" beef over "grass-fed" beef. It's a matter of personal preference.
One reason and one reason only, they don't know the difference. I used to be in that camp until I learned the truth about properly raised beef.
I'll take local, grass fed beef over anything served at Peter Luger"s or any other steak house that serves prime grade.
LMAO marbling doesn't mean anything to me except lower quality meat. Raise your beef however you like, I'll never eat it.
Should be fine as long as it's candy corn.
Candy corn-fed beef is much better than tough, stringy grass-fed beef.
They act like this is a good thing! Hello.....it's NOT!!!!! I don't believe there's a corn shortage and what about grass!? That is what cows are supposed to eat!!! There is a grass shortage too now??! This is all so crazy. The more I read about what goes on with most animal products, the more I don't want anything to do with animal products.
DO YOU REMEMBER JANUARY 3, 2007?
Check this out, your history lesson for today. Some people have short memories….. I’ve been saying this for years, but this email probably explains it better and more clearly. This is NOT a political message, but rather a clarification to remind us all of the correct facts.
Remember that on October 9, 2007, 11 months before our “economic crisis” occurred (that was actually created), the Dow hit its highest point ever, closing at 14,164.53 and reaching 14,198.10 intra-day level 2 days later. Unemployment was steady at 4.7%. But things were already being put in place to create the havoc we’ve all been experiencing since then. And it all started, as this email explains, on January 3, 2007.
I'm sending this to each of you regardless of your party preferences because I believe it is something you may not have considered.
This tells the story, why Bush was so “bad” at the end of his term.
Don't just skim over this, it's not very long, read it slowly and let it sink in. If in doubt, check it out!!!
The day the Democrats took over was not January 22nd 2009, it was actually January 3rd 2007, which was the day the Democrats took over the House of Representatives and the Senate, at the very start of the 110th Congress.
The Democrat Party controlled a majority in both chambers for the first time since the end of the 103rd Congress in 1995.
For those who are listening to the liberals propagating the fallacy that everything is "Bush's Fault", think about this: January 3rd, 2007 was the day the Democrats took over the Senate and the Congress.
At the time:
· The DOW Jones closed at 12,621.77
· The GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5%· The Unemployment rate was 4.6%
· George Bush's Economic policies SET A RECORD of 52 STRAIGHT MONTHS of JOB GROWTH
Remember the day...January 3rd, 2007 was the day that Barney Frank took over the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over the Senate Banking Committee. The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the economy? BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES!
Unemployment... to this CRISIS by (among MANY other things) dumping 5-6 TRILLION Dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac FIASCOES!
Bush asked Congress 17 TIMES to stop Fannie & Freddie – starting in 2001 because it was financially risky for the US economy.
And who took the THIRD highest pay-off from Fannie Mae AND Freddie Mac? OBAMA And who fought against reform of Fannie and Freddie? OBAMA and the Democrat Congress.
So when someone tries to blame Bush. REMEMBER JANUARY 3rd, 2007....THE DAY THE DEMOCRATS TOOK OVER!"
Budgets do not come from the White House. They come from Congress and the party that controlled Congress since January 2007 is the Democrat Party.
Furthermore, the Democrats controlled the budget process for 2008 & 2009 as well as 2010 & 2011.
In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases.
For 2009 though, Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid bypassed George Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running
until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the 2009 budgets.
And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete 2009.
If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five years, and the fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that
includes Barack Obama, who voted for the budgets.
If Obama inherited anything, he inherited it from himself. In a nutshell, what Obama is saying is I inherited a deficit that I voted
for and then I voted to expand that deficit four-fold since January 20th.
There is no way this will be widely publicized, unless each of us sends it on!
Holy crap! Shut up! Yeeeeeesh! THIS IS ABOUT COWS AND CANDY!
There is no shortage of corn!!!! 5th largest corn crop in US history. The price is high because your pension fund or Mitt's budies are screwing with the market. I process 100,000 bushels of corn every day.
Actually the corn crop goes to ETHANOL which corrodes our engines & does NOT reduce emissions. TAXPAYING consumers get to pay exorbitant prices because of feed shortages & sky high gas prices, both goals of the ObaMAO administration. Destroy the economy, get the middle class hooked on government handouts & you have unending POWER, Obama is not ashamed of his RADICAL, RACI ST, Mar xist/Soci list/Com munist agenda, he BRAGS about it openly in his books & interviews.
Actually, once the ethanol process is complete there is a product called DDG left. This is an acronym for Dried Distiller's Grains. This product is picked up by livestock farmer's and mixed with the other ingredients in their feed. Their is a reduction in nutrition from whole grains, but not significantly. Each batch of DDGs has specific nutrition values which are used by a livestock nutritionist to calculate the proper ratio of ingredients to use in the feed mix to ensure proper nutrition.
So yes, ethanol demand does drive up the price of corn, but their is still a VERY useful byproduct coming out of the process that can be used by livestock farmers.
Rob...you're a reactionist nutball.
cannabis Hemp requires less irragation, produces greater yield than corn and is the most eccological and ecconomical sorce of food/fuel/and fiber known on this planet... and water is not this nations only drought!!!
Legalize industrial hemp!
Meanwhile, we continue to use corn (food) as a fuel additive that shortens engine life and reduces gas mileage. Another brilliant move by our politicians who are paid off by lobbyists to enact this kind of ridiculous measure that does not serve us well. The US is falling apart and in less than 50 years our country will no longer exist. Mark my words. Penguins will laugh at us.
Mars candy company...There wrapers you can eat. There made that way so pig and cows can eat them with out
unwraping them... I bet you never thought of that... :)
Will this produce what the Brits call "sweetmeats"?
Well we can obviously see that hardly anybody that read this knows anything about basic ruminant(cattle) nutrition. The one post that made me laugh the hardest said that feeding them candy would make them ill. Uh could you please explain because I am really confused? The candy is nothing more than a high energy source of feed. Yes it is a high energy source of feed because it contains alot of calories, thats what that means. In human nutrition this is bad, in livestock nutrition its essential. And finally when feeding cattle you don't really feed the cow because all the food that goes in is really eaten by microbes first then the microbes are digested by the cow. Really people get some facts straight before posting please. And its only 3% of a diet anyways so its not much, it just looks like alot because you can see the M&M's from a mile away in the feed bunk.
If you feed them CANDY CORN then it will be all right.
May I suggest you take a basic diet and nutrition class. You knowledge is questionable. Cows are meant to be fed grass, not corn, chocolate, or recycled animal waste feed. I wonder if you remember Mad cow disease.
Corn is a monocot; it's a grass. Feeding a ruminant whole corn wastes about 70% of the corn as ruminants cannot digest raw starch effectively (100's of peer reiewed papers are available). However if you make ethanol out of the starch portion and send the dead yeast and the fiber out of the corn kernel back to the feed lot, you get much better results. By the way, the fiber is cellulose and hemicellulose which is GRASS.
The only reason they can digest sugar in candy efficiently is that it's all short chain saccharides; DP<10 (less than 10 glucose monomer units per molecule for the ignorant). Most is only 2-3 glucose units so the microbes in the rumen can ferment them to short chain fatty acids.
Obviously, you've never witnessed a 1,200 animal loose on a hyperactive sugar rush
Feeding corn to cattle was bad enough, but this is beyond stupid. This is yet another good reason not to eat beef. Pure garbage.
Perhaps they are feeding the cows CANDY CORN!
OMG this is getting just plain nutso!!!!! My family LOVES our beef! We have since changed to a local butcher and local beef. Guess what?! Our beef ... which is a tiny bit CHEAPER then the local grocer is GRASSFED.... imagine that... cows actually eating grass... what a concept. They then fertilize the grass which makes the grass grow faster and healthier. The last time I checked ..grass is pretty cheap. it also prevents ecoli! When will these large packing companies who force their farmers to do stupid stunts like this ..learn ... America LOVES BEEF. We want BEEF! We want grassfed, cost effective no chemical, candy or hormone BEEF. It is possible and it is cost effective.
Rats. I made the same joke, but you beat me. Congratulations, you win.
first off a cows digestive system cant handle candy...it makes them very ill to process large amounts of sugar and fat because they have a very efficent digestive system that can pull alot of nutriets out of dead grass....starch and fat overload the digestiive system and cause multiple organ failures. Secondly, we would not have this problem if farm factories would feed them what is natural to them which is Freakin GRASS!! Corn which is very starchy also makes them severely ill which really damages their digestive system and also causes multiple organ failures and they have to be given a host of antibiotics, steriods, growth hormone just to stay alive and grow to slaughter size. So why do factory farmers do this? 1 reason is the corn is substidied and the 2nd reason is the process of nearly killing the cow make their meat tender.
Let them out to pasture!! Their meat may somewhat tougher because it is leaner, but it will be from a healthy animal. Would you knowingly eat meat from a diseased animal? Everytime you eat feed lot beef, they are diseased, propped up with a bunch of chemicals. Support your local grass fed beef farmers!
Sing it loud and clear Fibergirl! We LOVE beef... but we want healthy, safe and GOOD beef! It is possible and it is cost effective. My local butcher has competitive prices with the grocers. Get rid of the crap and let those cows eat GRASS!
Fibergirl – You are an utter idiot for your comment. I grain feed and grass feed my 5 cows so I can butcher them. I can tell you that grain does NOT hurt the cows. YOU ARE AN IDIOT. Dont speak unless you know what you are talking about. My oldest cow which is a pet is almost 10 years old and has been grain fed and NO ORGAN FAILURE has occurred....
Stop calling her an idiot you stupid hick, she's actually correct where industrialized beef is concerned.
Well fibergirl get some facts: Cattle have the most inefficient feed conversion of any domesticated animal. In the area of 13 lbs of feed per pound of weight gain. On green grass/hay it's much worse. Pigs need about 2.5-3 and chickens/turkeys around 1. That's why in the old days you ran all three together. Feed the cow and it leaves most of the food value in the manure; pigs eat the cowflop and leave some feed value and then the chicken eats the pig s-. Hence the old saying "pick s- with the chickens.
I think ist bad to give cows candy. just because they could be contaminating our food. so yeha giving cows candy is a big NO NO!!
Huh? How does giving candy to cows create a contaminant?
I am not sure exactly what he meant by that but feeding corn (which most candy is made of corn syrup ... and not sugar) is not good. If you are curious there is several books and documentaries (one being Food inc) that will change how you buy beef. We love our beef! My family could not survive without their steaks and slow cooked pot roast... however grassfed cattle don't have things like ecoli or mad cow in them. They do not have hormones and all of that stuff. Grass is cheap. So feeding them candy is not feeding them grass which is what their diet naturally calls for. It makes for a better quality of beef ... it tastes SOOO much better... it is healthier and its leaner. Go Grass!
Well praline, as someone whose made BILLIONS of pounds of corn syrup in the last 40 years I can assure you it is SUGAR. Glucose, maltose, maltotriose...notice the "ose" that means sugar.....are the main constituents of corn syrup. HFCS converst some of the d-glucose to another form, l-glucose or fructose. At least go to wikipedia before showing your lack of knowledge. It's free.
How is feeding a cow a processed candy bar of limited energy value, a good alternative to corn? Has CNN been punked? (I'm saying this as someone who grew up in dairy country and belonged to 4H.)
Then you must have done 4H dress making or raised rabbits. Candy has huge energy value. Because of the fats along with the sugars probably somewhere on the order of 5-6 Calories/gram. It's much more energy dense than corn or grass. If it's fermentable a cow can eat it. It might not be the best feed, but it'll get something out of it. My company sell waste cooked potato starch to cattle feeders every day.
Mr. Dextrose, you and Monsanto must be in bed together. Why don't you go find a closet somewhere to grow your third eye and stop insulting everybody on here? Your insistence that candy is a good thing to feed cows is an opinion, not a fact. Many of us would rather have clean food like fully grass-fed beef rather than eat something that has dined on waste products, candy, antibiotics, and frankenfeed its entire life.
still shocked at how Monsanto and GMO are all of a sudden dirty words. If it wasn't for companies like them millions of people would be starving right now. Is that what you want?
I'd rather they be fed GRASS, since that is what they are supposed to eat. However, if my choice is GMO corn or candy, let's go with candy, and relegate the GMO crap to biofuel.
Keep in mind the sugar in candy is from GMO corn.
Those happy cows out in California just got much happier. Why don't they also feed the cows Vodka? Might as well cover all the bases.
All the bases would include viagra.
In fact, the Japanese produce their renowned Kobe beef by feeding their cows Sake and giving them massages. Not a bad life before the slaughterhouse.
Why are they short on feed, on corn? It's because it's being use on the ethanol agenda.
Wake up people, don't react from the hip, read and research.
Actually, the shortage is caused more so by the drought than ethanol. I live in a highly agricultural area, and many of the corn fields are being turned to silage since there is no corn on the ears. Plus, feed prices are sky high at the moment (also due to the drought). As for ethanol being the problem, many cattle are fed on DDGS, or dried distiller's grains, which is a by-product of ethanol production.
Lack of rain. Wow people are dumb.
I know your are, but what am I?
The shortage to due more to the drought we have been going through for several months now then the ethanol. Feed prices are also very high right now, also due to the drought.
5th largest corn crop in US history. There is NO SHORTAGE OF CORN and I use 100,000 bushels every day.
Ya know what happens when you mix milk and sugar? You get alcohol. Talk about gas. Then prozac for the hyperactive cow.
No wonder I'm allergic to all but organic meats! I know the things to avoid at the grocery store that trigger allergies, but some things have been a mystery until this came out. I've said all along I wasn't allergic to beef itself, just what they feed the cattle. . .yuk.
So how do you keep the farm kids out of the cattle trough? I'm about ready to go looking for one myself!
"powdered hot chocolate mix"? Well, that'll save some time.
When will Obama STOP his terrorism against Medical Marijuana cancer patients?
Right, because when Romney is elected President, you can be sure that he'll have the door wide open for medical marijuana use ;-)
This is the best post of the day!!! I can just see it now!!!
Junk food is far worse for most animals than people. It totally messes up their digestive system so after a time they can't digest their normal foods. The year before I visited the Grand Canyon they had to euthanize some of the riding mules because people were feeding them cotton candy, potato chips, and other junk. Even white bread is bad for them.
Mules and cows have nothing in common other than they are both mammals. Their digestive systems are as different as a gerble and a cat. Carbohydrates are the thing that makes cows live. Whether in the form of corn, beet pulp or sugar, its all carbohydrate based. The actual thing that they eat most is hay with the extra carbohydrates added by the scoop at meal times to supplement the hay for greater milk production. .
if you knew what u were talkin about there is a huge difference between complex and simple carbs.
I know exactly what I'm talking about. I was born and raised on a dairy farm and still maintain aflock of chickens and pigs. When you feed cattle in the winter months you give them hay. Good milkers get more grain scooped on top than poor producers atg milking time. The very best of our herd were also given a scoop of something sweet like beet pulp. Beet pulp is the waste product of sugar production from sugar beets. Perhaps you should research a little more before trying to equate the negatives of human "complex carbohydrate" ingestion with the positive results to be had feeding them to cattle.
I think those cows were going to be "euthanized" anyway.
So um, just how many additives, artificial colors, etc. are used in your typical American candy? Does none of that find its way into milk or meat? I thought there was, like some kind of "standard" for what livestock should be fed..???
Many of those artifical colorings are petroleum based, too! Buy Local!
this. right there!
I bet their favorite candy bar is a 3 Moooosketeers.
I bet it's candy corn.....!!Hee...hee...
Actually cow's favorite candies are Milky Way, Milk Duds, and Butterfinger.
this is such a serious issue and you fools find it humorous. So many serious issue have become lauging matters these days is anything taken seriously anymore?
well den den,
Unlike u we tend not to dwell on the negitive things in life that we have ZERO control of. Like RAIN... Lighten up dude, life is short so eat cow candy
Spoken like a mad cow heifer...
Den. . .Buy Local!
oh those cow are gonna be addicted and not want to eat any thing else but candy. you would think it will make every thing tast alot sweeter lol!
Don't forget to floss...
I should have said, "Don't forget to floss, flossy."
I bet those would be some pretty sweet steaks!
OK, the obvious question is...if they are feeding them chocolate, do we get chocolate milk!! LOL :D I couldn't resist.
How about feeding them grass?
You. Get out. Common sense not allowed around these here parts.
Or how about candy corn?
You beat me to it.
Where's the follow up to this story? I want to know when will we, as the people of the United States, demand and vote for changes to our farming practices. You could judge our whole nation on the way we choose to farm. I hope they start cloning beef because then you might realize what you are actually consuming.
The problem is a drought....grass needs water to grow...drought means that there is no water. Therefore, there is no grass, or very little of it, at least.
They are feeding them candy because they can't afford the grain (corn) This IS NOT ok
Why, indeed? They're supposed to eat grass, not grain. Or candy.
Same as corn, we got a drought on so no corn, no grass.
That almost makes me wish I was a cow. Mooooo. Caaaandy. : ). We hope everyone is having the happiest and most wonderful autumn day ever. May peace and happiness always be with you.
