Pssst! Got a sec to chat?

We are utterly thrilled when readers want to hang out and talk – whether it's amongst themselves or in response to pieces we've posted. We want Eatocracy to be a cozy, spirited online home for those who find their way here.

Consider the daily Coffee Klatsch post as your VIP lounge – the primary comments thread for readers who'd like to chat about topics not related to the articles we're running. That way, everyone knows where to find each other, and each post's comments section remains on topic.

Week one pick'em status. The only two I saw last week:

    Jdizzle: 8-8
    Mary Shannon: 10-6

Week two pick'ems now open! I just have to go do some scouting quick and lick these wounds.

Though on a good note, both my fantasy teams beat their opponents this week at NFL.com. =)

I posted my picks but a modbot got me...twice. I tried to find the offensive word(s) but still got stopped. Maybe the nice lady behind the curtain will release my words into cyberspace, please?

  4. Truth™, on the road from Guangzhou Province

Had a most interesting day today. For lunch, I moseyed into a place that served twenty four different kinds of TonKatsu. I am talking lean TonKatsu, Fat TonKatsu, TonKatsu with Chicken Feet, with beef tripe, with Ox Innards. I am not kidding.

The place was empty and since the staff spoke no English, and my Cantonese is laughable, I had four servers helping me, and when one saw my passport as I was paying the bill, she pointed and said "Ooooh,,,9/11!"

And THAT about brought it all home. Pun intended.

Say a prayer/chant/meditation/whatever your thing today, please, in remembrance.

    Be well All!

Kat, my dear, my third favorite NP alum, behind myself and my 1987 roomie from Bouton Hall...Would I ever disappoint you?

Not only have I taken food pictures (one observation...when you take pics of your food in Asia, people look at you VERY strangely), but I was thinking of a story that I will contribute if you are ever really starved (pun intended) for material (working title: "TonKatsu: You're very welcome" PLEASE feel free to edit...:)

As I was eating though, I was also thinking about when I was first introduced to this dish at age twelve, and what it felt like today being a stranger in a VERY strange land (none of the staff nor I could understand each other), and what it felt like watching someone grind the dipping additives via mortar and pestle at the table. Tipping is not customary in Asia, but I still pulled her aside and gave her 20% because she made me feel very personally connected. The more I travel, the more I really have come to believe that there is something very visceral, very personal about preparing food for another person. When you think about it, you are putting your own personal signature on that person's very sustenance. While it is easy to dismiss that, I think there is not much that is more personal.

Kat, if you need pics or anything, please send your email through our resident Mayor, RichHead. I will be happy to send anything I have.

        Best!

Sounds like you are having a great time. I read Kats ramen noodle story. What the heck is "brick and bottle?"

Oh – a brick of ramen noodles and a bottle of Zesty Italian salad dressing.

For those of us who are geographically challenged, I found a map: http://www.travelchinaguide.com/images/map/guangdong/guangdong.gif

Kind of like "Where's Waldo", today starring Truth.

Just trying to help here so you can "pin the tail on Waldo". Go to the google home page, select the maps option, type city name, country and poof, you are there. Use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out. For added fun mouse over to the upper right of the map and hover over the square that says satellite and you have the option of having a satellite view or the Google Earth view (more 3-D ish). You can zoom in pretty close. No street views in Guangzhou though.

The Bing homepage also has a similar feature and sometimes Bing offers better resolution photos than Google.
        Enjoy.

Wishing all Klatschers a peaceful day of remembrance of those lost on this tragic day, and hope that an event of that magnitude never happens again.
