While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday. Need a little pick-me-up that also satisfies your sweet tooth? You’re in luck, September 6 is National Coffee Ice Cream Day. The concept of ice cream has existed since about the 4th century B.C. It’s said that Chinese King Tang blended ice and milk, and that eventually this concoction was brought from China to Europe. Over time, Europeans adapted the original recipe, and those made their way to America. It’s said that past presidents, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, served ice cream at functions. Londoner Philip Lenzi is credited with opening the first American ice cream parlor in New York City in 1774. Since then, ice cream has come a long way and flavors have become more creative - which leads us to coffee-flavored ice cream. If you’re serving coffee to kids, be warned that it will perk them up, so it’s probably not the best post-dinner treat. |
