While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday.

It’s the best thing since sliced bread - August is National Sandwich Month!

First century B.C Rabbi Hillel the Elder is credited with coming up with the sandwich concept. He put bitter herbs between two matzos during Passover. The Hillel sandwich is still popular at Passover feasts.

The name “sandwich” has a slightly more scandalous beginning. Sandwich is the name of a place in the county of Kent, England. In the late 1700s, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, John Montague, was known to be an avid gambler. He would spend so long at the card table that eventually his hunger would get the better of him. For sustenance, he asked for bread, meat and cheese. Because he needed a hand free for his cards, he put the meat and cheese between the bread. Other players saw this convenient snack and asked for the same.

The universal appeal of the sandwich is that it can be customized for every taste and every meal. They can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner; as a snack or a meal, sweet or savory, hot or cold. They can be as humble as a PB&J or as exotic as a lamb bánh mì with spicy mint rub. After all, the beauty is in the eye of the sandwich holder.

What’s your favorite sandwich combination?

There is a family owned deli near where I live in Wilsonville, Oregon called Country Grains and they make everything from bread, to brownies, to cinnamon rolls. By far the best thing they make though is sandwiches. My favorite is called the Chicken Bacon Melt. It is a whole juicy chicken breast cooked to perfection with thick cut bacon, melted cheddar and havarti cheeses, lettuce, tomato, bbq sauce, and mayo.. It is the best sandwich I have ever eaten in my life :)

I defy anyone to construct a more tasty masterpiece than one of my "snacks". Not even Shaggy & Scooby could equal one of my culinary concoctions!
