 The home of New Orleans's beloved Hubig's Pies was destroyed by a fire early Friday morning in a "total loss," according to the New Orleans Fire Department. The five-alarm fire at the historic bakery began around 4:28 a.m. in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood, CNN affiliate WWL-TV reported. An employee noticed smoke coming out of the fryer room, where the fire is assumed to have started. The plant closed briefly after Hurricane Katrina due to serious roof damage. It didn't reopen until the first week of January 2006, evoking a bit of controversy when the pie made an appearance in the HBO series "Treme" in a diner scene set three months after the devastating hurricane. The Bowman and Ramsey families have vowed to return, according to WWL. "On behalf of the Hubig's Pies family we would like to thank everyone for all of the love and support we have received through out the years and during this difficult time. The abundant amount of thoughts, prayers, and strength that is being sent our way during this time is much appreciated," the Bowman and Ramsey families said in a statement. "We are blessed to be part of such a resilient community and we send our immense gratitude to all of the first responders who 'put this out with their tears.' I just read this article and some of the comments and I dont understand how someones business burning down could spur such awful comments. What is wrong with you people. This biz burning down isnt political. This is someones livelyhood and the fact that no one was killed in the fire should be enough to make people realize how precious life is. I have completly lost faith in our country. People are so negative and hateful these days. Its like you people have disregarded all human decency and only care about your agendas. How much hurt do you want to put on your fellow man? When will you have your fill? I choose not to participate in your hate filled free speech and i would encourage others to love your neighbors whether they be a liberal or a conservative. This country was founded by both. I am a conservative but i dont want to hurt anyone , only to encourage them and lift people up. Maybe its too late to save this country.

I'm so glad to hear that they will rebuild and rebound from this! I have been enjoying Hubig Pies for many years. After leaving New Orleans in 2008, I always try to bring pies back with me to Georgia every time I come home.
Old New Orleans has been slipping away for 25 years, each one of these small disasters takes a little more.
A lot of that's due to the simple fact that a lot of old New Orleans is a dump.

SixDegrees – maybe you see it as a dump but many people don't and many people form outside of New Orleans and Louisiana see it as a gem. Maybe you live in dumpville and just can't stand that NOLA and Louisiana in general is a great place to live and visit.
With all the government red tape they will face to get the needed permits to build a new facility that meets code, they would be wiser to take the insurance money and leave the country. And who could blame them if they do? Why give Obama and the democrats anything more to tax.
For example:
Cook Medical, an Indiana-based medical equipment manufacturer says it's scrapping plans to open five new plants in the coming years because of a looming tax tied to President Obama's health care overhaul law.
They claim that the tax on medical devices, set to take effect next year, will cost the company roughly $20 million a year, cutting into money that would otherwise go toward expanding into new facilities over the next five years.
"This is the equivalent of about a plant a year that we're not going to be able to build," a company spokesman said.
He said the original plan was to build factories in "hard-pressed" Midwestern communities, each employing up to 300 people. But those factories cost roughly the same amount as the projected cost of the new tax.
The people at Cook Medical are liars, don't become an accessory to their obviously political motivated lies.

Local building codes, plans, and permits are a bad thing, heaped on small-mid size business owners by Obama and all democrats? Just how dumb are you? Never mind. I already know the answer.
I hope Hubigs comes back fast in a fine new facility. Those pies are delicious, although they absolutely should be enjoyed in moderation due to their caloric and fat content.

Otherwise you'd know this claim stinks more than you do. This company employs 10,000 people world wide – like in China... and other countries you could not possibly spell because they have more than two syllables.
Face it, its another company looking for more excuses to legitimize its off shore engineering and manufacturing practices even further. What is more this company is an empire of wholly owned subsidiaries; the majority of which are operating overseas. Ooohh, this is awful news! So glad to hear, that HUbig's plans to rebuild. It shows the determination of those people who always seem to bounce back regardless of what is put in their way. I was so young when we were transfered to LA., but, meeting the many people, over those yrs., & loving those whom I met, they showed me the undeniable determinination, & resourcefulness of these bayou people, no matter what life throws at them. Be it weather related, football back slides, or what those who don't really know these people, say about them. They pick themselves, & others up, dust themselves off, & get to work. Get 'er done! OMG! Not Not Hubig's TOO!! as a New Orleans native, not able to return after Katrina, My heart is breaking. Lawrences, McKenzies, The original Randazzo's, the city has lost so much of it's culinary heritage, especially the small local bakeries and local manufacturers of things like fried pies and king cakes. Hubig's fried pies were THE snack of my childhood (just ask my hips!). They have always been strong supporters of the the city in many ways. I hope they DO rebuild. The city needs them and the jobs.
And JDizz, I agree with you a lot but you are off base with this one. It would be as if the original Nathan's Hot Dogs on Coney Island burned down. Well, maybe not to the rest of the USA but to New Orleanians is is another bit of our treasured history lost. Not something the city needed. And not related to the Saint's or their getting caught doing something that happens league wide.
We still miss the Mckinzie's cream cheese filled King Cakes.
