If there's a presidential race afoot, there's bound to be some chowing-down around town. President Obama stopped by Atlanta's classic hot dog drive-in The Varsity, entourage in tow, and ordered five chili dogs, four regular dogs, and one hamburger - which he toted back to the parking lot in a paper bag.

The 1600 Report notes that "Visiting this mouth-watering establishment has been a rite of passage for other U.S. presidents as well – Jimmy Carter, George H. Bush and Bill Clinton all had a taste for The Varsity’s renowned food during their respective terms in office."

Stops at local haunts are de rigueur for candidates hoping to curry favor with the electorate, whether it's Brunswick stew at Harold's BBQ across town, brats and beer in Green Bay, shrimp and grits in South Carolina, loose meat in Iowa or pancakes at every diner across the U.S.A. If there's a formica table and a few votes to be nabbed, you bet the campaign bus will be taking a snack break.

Catch up on all campaign trail coverage on Eatocracy and see how CNN's Political Team likes to get their political grub on.

Obama ain't setting a very good example of healthy eating. Where is Michelle to get him in line!

Wanna bet that when Rick Perry was told it was a VEGETARIAN corn dog he went into the men's room to throw it up? I can't picture a Republican Governor from Texas normally chowing down a meal that doesn't involve some sort of meat in it.

Since neither the President or his wife have a weight problem, exercise regularly, and eat healthy food most of the time, I think President Obama should be able to occasionally have a hot dog.

I think it's pandering, but I respect the fact that they acknowledge some things that possible voters consider to be traditions and at least make an attempt to try them. Food is much more relatable and somewhat less touchy subject than most and I'd rather see a candidate look at a plate of barbecue and go "Ok, let's eat" than have them pretend that they never eat anything, anywhere. When I lived in NC there was an election that pitted a native against a Northern newcomer. They were making an appearance at a restaurant known for their grits. The proud owner offered each candidate at serving. The native ate his with delight. The newcomer visibly recoiled and said "Oh, I'd never eat something like that!" All of this took place during a live broadcast. Anybody care to guess who won that race?

Then your relatives will have no right to gripe at whoever gets in office in November. I particularly dislike people who don't vote because they don't like either candidate. Who do they think they're helping?

I find it sad that there are so many people out there who vote for a person based on things that have no bearing on their ability to do a good job in that political office.

Doesn't eat grits? vote no. Has blonde hair? vote no. Good looking? vote yes.

      June 27, 2012 at 12:46 pm | Reply
      • Ally

And that being said, I do agree with you, Mickey. Because of people's reactions it would be a bad move to refuse to eat a restaurant's specialty if given the chance.

        • mickey

I don't think that was the ONLY reason he wasn't elected (at least I HOPE not) but it didn't do him any good, that's for sure. Then again, we elected John Edwards to office, so the voting process in NC is an interesting beast.
