I’m not sure how your father rates 364 days out of the year, but on Father’s Day, he surely morphs into a superhero.
To befit someone of your dad’s status, there should be a celebratory Father’s Day dinner - and that dinner should probably include steak. Here are some places to celebrate:
Big Texan Steak Ranch (Amarillo, Texas)
On the subject of superhero-sized steaks: Big Texan’s is 72 ounces (ladies and gentlemen, that's 4 1/2 pounds). It’s free if your dad can eat it in under one hour. The website lists the folks who have succeeded in that endeavor and, not surprisingly, it’s predominantly men. The site also carries a warning: "Our World-Famous FREE 72 oz. STEAK DINNER (if eaten in one hour) is only for the very hungry. Many have tried. Many have failed."
Brand Steakhouse at Monte Carlo (Las Vegas, Nevada)
Texas does not have a monopoly on outrageously sized steaks or crazy steak-eating challenges. At Brand Steakhouse, the 120-ounce steak is also free if you finish it in one hour; it’s $250 if you don't. If you want to virtually experience the challenge, check out professional competitive eater Furious Pete, who posted a video on YouTube. If you want to be sensible about it, get a group of other dads to go with your dad. On the menu, the steak is listed as a dish to feed six.
Little Alley Steak (Roswell, Georgia)
If you love your dad and therefore don’t want him to eat a ridiculous amount of steak (and/or can’t afford the plus-sized ones), Little Alley offers American Kobe beef meatballs for only $9.95, and American Kobe beef carpaccio for only $10.95. If you can bankroll an actual steak, you have the choice of wet-aged, dry-aged or USDA prime beef, served with "enticing steak enhancements" like roasted bone marrow, lobster tail or crab in yuzu bearnaise sauce.
Vedge (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
Here’s the place for all the vegetarian fathers who like to frequent new restaurants. When Vedge opened this past November, chef Rich Landau offered a Montreal steak spice-seared tofu with parsnip and chanterelles - his version of a 16-ounce bone-in rib eye. It doesn’t look like that will be on the menu this Father’s Day, but that was probably too much soy protein anyway; as an option there’s now spicy grilled tofu with edamame, creamy sesame and yuba cracklins.
Delfina (San Francisco, California)
At his terrific Bay Area restaurant, chef Craig Stoll has designed a whole menu for dads and their plus one that day. The meal includes risotto Milanese with bone marrow and a one-kilo charcoal-grilled, aged bistecca (remember, that’s for two). Appropriately, there’s beer gelato for dessert.
Prime 289 Chophouse & Wine Bar (Oneonta, New York)
Oneonta is just a half-hour drive from Cooperstown, home of the Baseball Hall of Fame. So if you’re the kind of son/daughter who’s planning a whole day to celebrate, you can go from Hall of Fame to Father's Day Sunday brunch at Prime 289. There you’ll find steak Benedict (prime tenderloin, spinach, egg and hollandaise on ciabatta). If you prefer dinner, there’s a choice of eight different steaks, all aged for 21 days and cooked at 1,800 degrees in their infrared broiler.
Bourbon Steak, Fairmont Scottsdale Princess (Scottsdale, Arizona)
Star chef Michael Mina has created a Father's Day lunch for dads who want fish for their big day: BBQ Wild Salmon Steak. Don’t worry, Mina’s thinking about the beef lovers too: There’s also salt and pepper rib eye as well as pineapple-teriyaki skirt steak. Desserts include "Mason Jar Pudding" filled with a Macallan 12-year mousse (woah!) and "Dad's Favorite Cookies" - double chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin stout and peanut butter.
