Ryan Goodman is a generational rancher from Arkansas with a degree in Animal Science from Oklahoma State University in Animal Science, and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at the University of Tennessee, studying beef cattle management. He is one of many farmers utilizing social media to bridge the gap between farmers and urban customers. Can you describe this process from the time a calf is born to the moment your knife slices a steak? In this country, we are blessed with a great group of farmers who care for their animals and a food safety system to ensure things work properly. There are farmers who do things various ways for good reasons for both their customers and their farms. A good balance of science and communication can go a long way in sustaining this process. I come from a family farm in Arkansas. I was raised with cattle in lush, green pastures. Fresh eggs were collected from the barn, vegetables came from the garden, and I fed a few pigs and calves to have meat for my family’s table. This may sound like a historical account of farming, but in reality, this describes most modern farms. According to the Cattlemen's Beef Board, 97 percent of cattle farms in this country are family owned and operated.
It would have been easy for me to stay in my own little corner of the world and assume raising cattle was only the way I was taught. I did not know it when I left home for college, but I was on my journey to learn how cattle are raised across the country. I worked for a ranch in Wyoming where cattle were marketed for natural beef programs, and for a variety of farmers in Oklahoma and Arkansas where farming is not their primary occupation. While in Texas, I worked for two of the largest cattle feedlots in the country. There is a multitude of different places out there, all with different ways of managing cattle. With my experience has come a great deal of learning. First: raising cattle is a lifestyle for all of these folks, a family affair in most cases. Farming takes hard work, dedication, and a passion for that work. Raising cattle can be far from the romantic image of cowboys on the range huddled around the campfire or grandmother’s farm with a red barn and chickens in the yard. We still have the same goals and values of raising animals and producing food, but there are many tools that allow farmers to do their job more efficiently. It is because of the modern farmer’s work today that most Americans can pursue their own ambitions and many choose them off the farm and outside of the home, make many advances in a modern lifestyle and not have to worry about hunting and gathering food for the family. Second: raising cattle must be economically sustainable. Large or small, farming is a business, as well as the lifestyle for most of us. Farmers have families to feed too. Some get wealthy in agriculture, but most do it because they are passionate about rural America, producing food for their communities and working alongside family. We choose to provide food on the table, provide proper care for our animals, and improve our environments.
We lose thousands of farmland acres each year to competition from urban development. Farmers have learned to become more efficient by embracing technology and better management tools to produce more beef on fewer acres. In doing this, we have also improved our environment by reducing our carbon footprint by 16 percent since 1977. My journey has also taught me that farmers are not perfect. Most all the people I have met are genuinely good people, but we make mistakes. A good farmer learns from those mistakes and improves upon them. There are bad apples out there, as there are in any way of life. Farmers do not accept cruel treatment to animals. We should not allow cases of animal cruelty or journalism’s portrayal of such acts reflect on the entire farming community. Many people in America today trust farmers, but not necessarily modern farming practices. I am here to encourage you to get to know a farmer, not just one, but farmers from a variety of places. We are people who do our grocery shopping in town and take our kids to ball practice just like many of you. The future of food and agriculture relies on a new generation of farmers. Will you shun them and tell them what they are doing wrong or join a discussion to learn about how food is grown and what we can do to make things better? If you do not know how to find them, I would be glad to help through the social media networks I have built. There are lots of us willing to have conversations about how this works. Farmers need to do a better job of reaching out and listening to your concerns, our customer, because your opinion matters. Get to know where your food comes from. Do not tell farmers what they are doing wrong; rather ask what it is farmers do, let farmers ask questions, and in the course of conversation there will be better understanding on both sides. Most cows in feed lots are born at smaller family ranchers. If you don't like the mass production that urban America has forced our food providers into there is a simple solution. Start building buildings up and not out so there is less competition for space and water and EAT LESS. If Americans weren't the most obese country in the world we wouldn't be forced to produce the amount of food we do.
Why do you give your cattle growth hormones and antibiotics.? In case you did not know.. that contributes to human immunity to antibiotics which is a huge problem in hospitals. And breasts forming on girls younger than they should have. I understand that is what you do to make profits.. but it isnt what I want. I will drink soy milk or almond milk, which has none of that BS, and is full of more vitamins and protein than cows milk will ever have. Humans arent supposed to drink bovine milk anyway. Sorry Chum! Almond, Soy, and Rice milk... Its much healthier,. So screw yourselves with all the politics about the whole thing....I'll drink almond milk...!!

The article is titled "No bull – what a farmer wants you to know about how beef gets to your plate" and I seen not one word about that topic. What I see is a guy who hides a bunch of whining about 'outside interests' amongst some flowery words about his profession/business. He mentions 'concern of modern practices', but answers them by telling the reader to 'get to know a farmer'. Am I supposed to ask the profession of random people and then start quizzing the two percent who might be farmers on steroid use in cattle? An honest rancher might tell you that he'd be in a competitive disadvantage to skip such treatments individually, and that meat would cost more if banned altogether (but his lobby would keep that from happening). However, chances are that he'd just grumble something about 'liberals' or 'the media' and walk away.

I do like the way you have framed this specific issue and it does indeed offer me personally a lot of fodder for thought. Nevertheless, because of everything that I have seen, I really trust when the reviews stack on that folks remain on point and not start upon a tirade of the news of the day. Maybe I read the headline too literally, but I thought the article would explain the "process" of getting the beef into our grocery stores and our homes. This is a piece on the people and places where it begins. I appreciate the hard work, dedication, and passion of these farmers for their profession. Now tell us, as Paul Harvey used to say, "the REST of the story".
The implication in the article is that knowing your farmer is helpful. As we all know, without farmers, there is no food. They are necessary. However, the assumption that farmers know best what animals need is tricky; farmers definitely know what is needed to use animals to make a profit and use them as a means to make a living. However, not so sure that farmers treat animals the best. There are no laws on the books that farmers must treat animals good. Farm animals don't laws written; the laws for pets are strong; farm animals don't have these laws. Some farmers treat animals great; they make a profit and treat animals respectfully and the animals lives are full but yet profit is full. However, there are always incentives in the non-organic close quarters production to increase profits; high profits go with shortcuts. The margins on animal products are low; the key is large volume and treating them like products on an assembly line (OK for computers or cars production, not good for animal production). Farmers know a lot more than me about what is needed to keep animals healthy enough to get to slaughter and they do enough to get most of them there. But, sadly, farmers with animals are the equivalent of slaveowners. Just as some slaveowners treated their slaves good and some bad, but all knew how to get the most output of their belongings, so do farmowners with animals. I fully respect hunting, fully respect all done at PolyFace farms (and their ilk), but fully disrespect the large scale factorization of farm production (where 99% of farm animals are produced).
We have a cattle ranch in Etna Maine. We just started this almost a year ago and cannot imagine life any other way.

Ryan, I suspect that as you were preparing this article you knew that the responses would follow a very strong – and very ‘tight’ – bi-modal distribution, and that has definitely been the case. Many have wanted a “broader brushstroke” that simply was not possible given the space restrictions. Many of the responses have explored this broader area, which may very well not have been what you had in mind.
There is a good possibility that I have contributed to the discussion hitting some of these “side tracks”, and I want to apologize to you for that. That was never my intention. The larger group of us, as food producers and processors, have for too long remained silent while the sensationalists, extremists, and con-artists have attacked what we do, why we do it, and how we do it. Ten years ago this wasn’t the ‘big deal’ that is today, because we could reasonably count on “the latest big scare” to just dry up and blow away after it ran its course, which would usually happen in just a couple of weeks, if not less. Today, however, with essentially universal access to the internet and social networks, the scare-mongering takes on a life of its own, and the days of just “letting it ride” are over, if we are to have any chance at all of having ‘our side’ even heard, let alone believed.
You took a pro-active step to try to establish a dialog with those who are interested in knowing more about where meat comes from. I took a reactive stance to those who were posting misinformation or outright lies. This is not something that I make a habit out of doing, but this one happened to be ‘right down my alley’, so I had trouble staying out of it, especially the “cows are still alive when they are skinned and eviscerated” garbage. I truly hope that I haven’t undermined what you are trying to do.

I hope that those of you who truly are interested in knowing what really happens in producing the beef and the meat that we have in this country will find a reputable source with qualifications beyond “I wrote a book” from whom to get your answers.

The comments and conversation on here have been great. Not necessarily constructive in all cases, but a conversations none the less. Thank you to all of you who have expressed your honest thoughts. Many have expressed their opinions that my writing is a piece of fluff, propaganda, and basically doesn't address the concerns you wanted to hear about. Take note in this piece, I'm asking that everyone seeks information and conversation, not working to explain the entire process from pasture to plate in one article. There's no way on this planet anyone will ever do so.
So I ask you this... What are your questions? What do you wish I had covered in this article about where your beef comes from so it wasn't useless to you? What questions can cattle farmers answer to help everyone hear a side of the story that's not always told by others? I'm not looking for a preaching to, just your questions. If the folks at CNN will allow me to respond in another article, I will do so. If not, I will for certain answer your questions on my personal blog.

We have 1000 acres of natural pastures and very happy cattle. Our cattle go straight from these pastures to the abattoir (100 km trip in a truck). No feedlot. Those are the facts.
I'm not sure where you get your information from, but I very strongly suggest that you do your research more thoroughly than you have before making such broad statements. It just proves that the propaganda machine of the Animal Liberationists is working overtime, brainwashing people to make them believe that all cattle are raised in feedlots and live sad, worthless lives.
We live in one of the most productive areas of Australia and I only know of one private feedlot around this area – raising Waygu cattle to export to Japan. We have the strictest animal welfare practices in the world with everything strictly monitored. We have electronic eartags that trace beasts back to the property of origin so every single beast has a history from paddock to plate.
And as for your lesson in nutrition, if you are so learned, you would also know that grass-feed beef/lamb contains 'good' fats as opposed to lotfed (grainfed) beef. It is higher in Omega 3 fatty acids which are good for the heart, is higher in CLA (nature's anti-carcinogen) and has up to 4 times more vitamin E than grain-fed beef.
If you care to come take a drive in my part of the world, you WILL see paddocks, with grass as far as the eye can see, with fat, happy, contented cattle grazing in them. If you choose not to open your mind to these facts, then it's your loss I'm afraid. I myself would hate to admit my naivete so I make certain that I know the topic that I'm discussing and don't blindly quote incorrect facts.
All we can do is try to educate the uneducated but I'm afraid there are more and more people like you who blindly believe what the (very powerful) animal welfare lobbyists would have you believe, which in turn creates mass hysteria about the food we eat.

My parents had a small hobby farm 5 acres. Over the years we had chickens, rabbits, ducks, geese and a couple of cows. We bought a 3 day old calf. My dad hand fed her. She thought dad was her mom. He couldn't go out the back door of the house without being spotted by the now full grown cow and she would cry until he pet her. We milked our cows. We occassionaly raised one for beef for the freezer. One young bull died in an accident one year and my dad cried. He loved animals. And they loved him. He grew up during the depression on a farm in alberta. He had great respect for animals. We had a calf born on our property. We learned respect for animals too. My mom was a big influence too. She was always finding more humane ways to demise the chickens for the freezer. Treating animals humanely was taught to us at an early age. We had our pets and some we raised for food. That was life. Dad enjoyed even cutting the grain for them with a scythe and if he took the cows from the back pasture to the front pasture, some how they always managed to get into moms garden! Their favorites the cabbage and the corn. We secretly knew dad let them in the garden for a quick nip! ha ha!
Are you sure it was the CORN that they were eating? I only ask because about a third of the posters here insist that cattle don't/won't eat corn. You couldn't possibly be mistaken about this, could you?

I apologize What?, it seems as if you read every word absolutely literally. Then you take this acute interpretation of words out of context on purpose, build yourself a straw man, and then beat it to death. Please read a little about logical fallacies and how to construct arguments, because you are not good at it.
I know cows are capable of eating corn. I know cows will eat corn if given the opportunity. I also know that corn fed beef is not as healthy as grass fed beef. Cows have not evolved to survive on a diet of corn and it is not good for their bodies, just as eating chicken nuggets and drinking soda all day are not good for a human's body.

Your first paragraph here is somewhat “out of context” as far as its location, but we both know what you are referencing. I want you to go back and read your first two paragraphs; I’ll even “boil them down” for you here: P1 – “We know what we’re doing, and it’s fine” a.k.a. ”It isn’t broke”, P2 – “There’s nothing wrong with how things are being done now” a.k.a. ”It doesn’t need fixing”. Now slowly read P3, sentence 1 where you ‘summarize’ these thoughts and link them to who you did, the way you did. Now read P3, S2, which is – and I’m being objective here – one of the most condescending and dismissive statements “in context” that has made on this entire thread. Now tie this to the fact that you referenced me specifically in P2, and I’m having trouble seeing the “fallacy”. I will practically guarantee you that over 80% of people who read [present tense] those first three paragraphs would arrive at the same ‘conclusion’. I can accept that that may not have been your intent, but you are guilty, at the very least, of an appreciable lack of ‘tact’.
I thought about this a good bit yesterday, both before and after I posted ‘that’ reply. The more I thought about it, the more I decided it wasn’t really your perceived ‘dismissal’ of me that was so irritating, but it was the “slap in the face” you gave to all the hard-working folk out there who weren’t fortunate enough to be able to enter a “professional” field. You take P3, S’s 1&2 and have them stand alone, or put them in any context, anywhere, and there is no getting around the ‘air of superiority’ that you convey by your choice of words and how you arranged them. [Constructively] You might think about trying to work on that.
My entire point in that post WAS to beat your “logic”, or lack thereof, to death, so as to leave no doubt that I’m not ‘just’ John Q. Farmer talking about “what I know” from my one little, teeny-weeny corner of the country, with blinders on concerning what goes on outside my “silo”. I trust it was ‘mission accomplished’.
Only one thing to add regarding the ‘pertinent’ response to the post immediately above:
You’ve made this statement – “Cows have not evolved to survive on a diet of corn and it is not good for their bodies . . . ” – or something similar to it several times now. It’s a rather ambiguous statement; it could be construed as “Cows aren’t supposed to eat any corn at all” or as “Cows aren’t supposed to eat only corn”. The former option is completely disingenuous and – if that is your intent – really exposes your complete lack of knowledge of anything to do with ruminant nutrition, even though the “Cliff Notes” version has been supplied here. If the latter option is the intended interpretation, then you are correct. “Cattle are not meant to be fed a diet consisting solely of grain corn.” It has already been stated here several times that this is not done – and it isn’t – so if this is the true intent of your statement, in light of the fact that you continue to use it, it shows you are either unwilling to or incapable of accepting the truth. I guess this isn’t what Michael Pollan wrote in his book, though, and since you’ve decided that he’s more believable than the people posting here, including the soon-to-be-multiple-degreed author of the article and the already-multiple-degreed author of this post (well over 20 years ago), then “the facts” must be wrong.
I did post the promised follow-up to the “tirade”, but I changed it up from what I had originally planned. It is one of the ‘tamest’ things I’ve posted in this string, but it’s “stuck in moderation”. It won’t surprise me if they ‘quarantine’ this one, too.
I'll add a little more to What?'s excellent comments on corn. Now I know you say that just because a person posts that they do "this" or "that" on their farm doesn't mean that's how it's done everywhere, but in this particular case, as it pertains to feeding corn, I can assure you it is true across the industry based on the principles of ruminant nutrition 101 that no cattle feeder feeds solely corn in their ration. Everyone in the business knows that of course is not the thing to do. So while I can only vouch for what my family does, in this particular topic, again, this would generally be industry-wide in the feedlot/cattle finishing business with variations from operation to operation, yes, but also generally the same concept. When we load a load of what we call "finishing ration" which is the ration used to "finish" the cattle to market weight, this particular ration has the highest percentage of corn in it, but not only corn. When we load an 11,000 pound batch (which depending on current per head intakes, will feed anywhere from 300 to 400 cattle their daily feed–very generally in the ballpark), that load consists of 4,900 pounds of cracked/rolled corn, 1,400 pounds of good quality, ground alfalfa hay, 4,400 pounds of distillers grains (byproduct from the ethanol process which is more nutritious and more palatable than corn), and 450 pounds of protein/mineral/vitamin supplement. (NOTE: For those on the antibiotics bandwagon, notice I made no mention of that being an ingredient in the daily ration!!) Point being 1) it is not solely a corn diet, even in the feeding stages where they will get the most corn they will see in their lives on a daily basis. 2) I am not being holier than though as you accused me of being, just trying to get the point across. and 3) you can still have your opinion after being enlightened with the foregoing facts, but make no mistake about it, THIS I can assure you is generally industry-wide with no exceptions. If there is a handful of producers out there feeding SOLEY corn–they are not producers in my opinion and should not be attempting to be in the business because, yes, they are not doing the cattle any justice at all. Now some feeding programs will not be exact to ours-I obviously recognize this, as there are many nutrition programs out there, but they ALL revolve around this central theme. As I stated in another post, if you don't believe me, I have been around other operations to know this and it is further proven by a vast number of university studies, research by various feed companies, etc.
A little more 'detail' on "distiller's grain" for those who aren't familiar with it. "Been There" was kind enough to post a typical finishing ration. For those who are reading, it could easily appear that this ration contains approximately 85% "grain" – 45% corn + 40% distiller's grain. That's not the way it is.
"Distiller's grain" is not 'grain'. This statement is both true and false. (We will concentrate on 'corn' here.) Distillers do use plain old ordinary corn to produce alcohol, so from a very general perspective, yes, distiller's grain is 'grain'.
When someone makes the statement that "Cattle weren't meant to/don't eat corn", what they are really saying is "Cattle weren't meant to/don't eat starch". Corn is high in starch, but the fermentation process converts the starch to ethanol. It doesn't matter whether the ethanol is for drinking or for fuel, it's made by fermenting starch. Commercial fermentation processes are quite efficient, and result in the conversion of around 90% of the starch into ethanol. The ethanol then is "distilled" out of the 'mash'. Since corn isn't 100% starch, not all of it ferments. The unfermented portion that is left after distillation is what is called "distiller's grain". There is little starch present in this product, so from both a "compositional" and a "nutritional" perspective, "distiller's grain is not grain".
The two last bastions of big beef have won. I will now forget and dismiss every scientific article and publication I have read on this topic. I will ignore my instincts of distrusting the bias individuals whose life is supported by an industry I do not think is trustworthy. I will assume you have the health of our nation as the forefront of your business, rather than earning as much money as possible while you can. I will ignore the inefficiencies of eating meat, of feeding animals with food produced using many fossil fuels, and countless other things that are contrary to the betterment of mankind.
Thanks for setting me straight cowboys. I'm going to go enjoy a steak now.

Yes indeed, I've met farmers. And I've worked on farms (when I was quite young and before my adult ethics had developed–I now consider it to have been a form of abuse, of me as well as of the animals). I've met farmers, and I've worked with them, and that is exactly why I will not consume "meat" (flesh), milk, "leather" (skin(, or any other animal-derived product, and have not done so for about three decades. I know exactly where it comes from, and I have seen personally the mind-bending vastness of the vicious cruelty that is involved.
Meat is murder. The farmer's aim is to kill his livestock. Arguments about humane treatment prior to death are absurd.

@Manny: I'll tell you what's absurd, and that is general, uninformed, ignorant conclusions like you just posted. Take the time to get the real story. You don't have to convert and start eating meat, but at least get the real story. You are entitled to your opinions as long as you at least know both sides of the argument, which you clearly do not. That's the whole point of the article.
Perhaps you should look into how many animals are killed plowing and harvesting a field for vegetable crops...

While I disagree with the tone, I do agree with your overall sentiment burlington11. I am a vegan and killing animals is not murder, nor is it wrong in any way. It is, however, unhealthy. Medical studies have proven that eating meat greatly increases your chances of being overweight, diabetic, having heart disease, having cancer, and numerous other afflictions.
Wow! You have anger issues. Could your rage come from eating dead animals along with their fear at the moment of death? Humans bred animals into docile "food". Farmers – sure you work very hard and assume a lot of financial risks.... but no one put a gun to your head and said "BE A FARMER OR IT'S CURTAINS FOR YOU!" Go into selling insurance or any one of the thousands of other professions out there if you want... sheesh.
I see a lot of bumper stickers that say "No Farmers No Food". I get that in essence. Not to be a total wiseguy... but... we have a huge problem with obesity and cardiovascular diseases in this country. Maybe having less food around wouldn't be so bad?
@Calm Down, I can understand your sentiment if you don't want people to become defensive or argumentative but could you think about what you just wrote, please, and a little bit from my perspective (or other farmers):
1. It is not the fault of farmers that there is an epidemic of cardivascualr disease and obesity in this country. We raise healthy food. Red meat can be a part of a healty diet. But if you take meat, vegetables, grains or fruits and you process them so that they can be stored longer or cook them in ways that smother all nutrition with fats then serve them in amounts three times that of what people actually need, then you'll have problems. None of that is the farmer's fault. I grew up drinking whole milk and eating beef and pork everyday and my blood pressure and cholesterol are lower than most people's. I eat healthy because I can recognize my food. Sorry if that started being too much of a rant, but maybe #2 will explain that.
2. Do you really want to tell me, my husband, my father or any other farmer that we shouldn't do what we love? Did you seariously suggest that because some people don't agree with our livelihood we should just give it up and do something easier like sell insurance? Yes we feel defensive. How many insurance agents out there get vilified by media or special interest groups for trying to make a living and trying to produce a high quality, affordable product? No it's not easy, no we don't make a lot of money, yes a lot of people don't understand what we do and take our products for granted, but we knew what we were getting into and we love it. It's not just a job, it's our lives, our families, our history and hopefully our children's futures. I hope that others don't take yourr viewpoint and tell their children that if the career or life they love is hard or some people don't understand or like what they're doing, they should just give up and find something easier to do. Instead we should try to work together to help each other understand.
3. Consumers need to understand where their food comes from and how it is produced so they can make informed decisions about their food choices (as this article was pointing out) and farmers need to understand the desires of consumers and the needs of society in order to meet those demands and operate sustainably. Sustainability three components and everyone needs to understand that – economics, community and ecology. If you can't make money, if you aren't a steward of your resources, or if you don't meet the demands or address the concerns of society, no business – family farm, large feedlot, restaraunt, retail shop, whatever, will not survive. Education and communication are key to helping bridge the gap between producers and consumers, stopping all the name-calling and fear-mongering and creating a society where sustainability can be a reality, not just a buzzword.

Americans demand cheap beef. Our collective tastebuds crave it....
To get a lot of beef cheaply, cows are going to be raised and slaughtered in a highly industrialized fashion. Simple as that.
The vast majoirty of Americans want a dollar menu at fast food joints, not a $5 grass fed menu. This is why the system works this way. If the VAST majority of Americans want bean burgers or grass-fed beef burgers, these items would become ultra popular and sell well.
I am not saying this is good for American health or ethical, it just is that way, a la Bruce Hornsby.
If you have an ethical problem with cheap beef, don't eat it. Very simple.

I agree, and I vote with my stomach. I don't buy cheap industrial beef, but will buy (in limited amounts due to pricing) pastured beef. If I am a guest in someone's home, I'm not rude and will eat what I am served, but in vastly limited amounts, and even there I definitely limit ground meat products.
If enough of us step beyond eating the industrial crud, all to the good. I think if we have opportunities to make informed choices, many of us will, even if it means not eating meat every supper. Artificially low food prices, whether meat or corn, is not sustainable.

Michael Pollan is a well respected investigative journalist who has done his homework on this topic. He has personally interviewed and documented many farmers, farming operations, and food producers. He has sought answers to many of the questions people ask in this thread and provided them to us through many books, films, and articles.
Now, we have a handful of "real life cowboys" in this comments section telling anyone and everyone who has an issue with the industrial military complex that is the meat industry in America that we are ALL wrong. That Michael Pollan was wrong. Why? Because they lived it. Hmm, let me see. We have the option of anecdotal evidence or multi-sourced/cross examined evidence. I am going to have to go with Michael Pollan on this one.
The experience of a single farmer can certainly provide insight, but that experience cannot sum up the entire beef industry in our country.
Also, stop with the "Don't attack farmers!!" mantra. No one is attacking farmers. Farmers work their butts off and do not make nearly enough money doing it. Farmers provide their consumers with what they want, and what American wants right now is beef that is cheap and dirty, no matter what the cost. My arguments here are for the consumers of beef. The consumer has to change before the supplier does.
So you are putting your faith in a journalist versus real people who farm for a living, many of which have been doing so for decades. Let me tell you something.....you won't EVER truly know the ins and outs of farming until you have LIVED it! You can at least consider the points of view of farmers that have posted here and if you actually take the advice of the article and connect with one yourself. However, unless you have gone out and spent a considerable amount of time "out here" you have no place to discredit those who have posted facts that have come from years of production EXPERIENCE.
So what's your job, buddy? If you have one, that is. Taxi cab driver? Factory worker? Subway operator? Nose picker? What? Let me know so that I can start bashing your occupation even though I know nothing about it, but will act like I do and that you who have done your job for years have no clue what you are talking about.
I have not discredited the jobs of many posters on here. I simply say that they are not the authorities on the topic. Every farm is different and there are a lot of ways to skin the cat. Very few people, even farmers, have worked on multiple farms. A journalist who goes to many farms across the country and speaks to these farmers can offer a much more broad perspective. As I said, experience can offer insight, but that experience may not be the same as someone else's.
I am an engineer. "Taxi cab driver? Factory worker? Subway operator?" What is wrong with any of these jobs? Is your profession more noble somehow? So you think you are better than people who do these things. The company I engineer manufacturers many products that are exported. The factory workers in my plant work their butts off for 8-10 hours a day 5-6 days a week in 95+ degree heat 250 days a year. They also work harder than any farmer I have ever met (and I have known/met many).
Just because one isn't an "authority" on the entire range of a very broad subject doesn't mean that they don't know exactly what they are talking about in one – or more – specific areas of that subject, does it?
A few farmers posting here have said "Well this is how my farm does it..". They are certainly experts on how their particular farm does it. A few others here have said "Well this is how my farm does it, which proves there is nothing wrong with the cattle industry", of course I am paraphrasing.
What? and Been There seem to be promoting the farm industry to no end. You have not acknowledged a single thing wrong with the industrial farming process or with corn fed beef. My point is that there are many things wrong with both of these subject. They are not ALL bad, but they can definitely be improved.
The mentality of "its not broke, don't fix it" is very prevalent amongst blue collar individuals. While I can appreciate that, it is not a path of continuous improvement. When data shows the damage of industrial farming, or feeding beef corn, or benefits of being a vegan, ignoring that data for childish reasons is simply stupid.
One farmer in particular said that because his family had provided corn fed beef for 100 years, it must be good. Tradition is hardly a scientific validation of a practice. We have the scientific ability to scrutinize any and all practices, whether that be medicine, farming, industry, or our diets. To not do that based on tradition is ridiculous.
So no, just because you run a farm it does not mean you know the best way to farm. I am not saying I know the best way to farm, but anyone who is passionate about their field will always seek ways to improve it. The paradox with farming is what is actually considered "improvement"? More profits? A better product? More volume? Preferably it would be all 3. The farming industry in the US has settled for profits and volume and let product quality fall to the wayside. The cattle industry does not benefit from a better product because of the supply chain that exists for beef from farm to consumer. We don't know where it comes from, how it was made, and what makes it good or bad. So how can the consumer make an educated decision on what is better when there is no visibility in the production process?
I have said this already, but I do not trust the meat industry in our country. I personally feel they are doing a disservice to us all by not putting quality (and visibility) first for the consumer. The game of shadows they play with the production process is disconcerting and I want no part in it, so I am a vegan. This sentiment is reinforced when CNN produces a fluff piece such as this to convince me otherwise without providing good information. I feel like I am being sold a piece of crap car from a used car salesman, and I don't want to buy it.
I have nothing against any of the occupations I listed. I was in a hurry during that post and those were jobs outside of ag that came to mind as I was typing. Those are all jobs that I would know nothing about, as is the case with you being an engineer, and I respect those that hold ANY job because every job in this economy is vital to its success and abilty to move forward.
My point is.....it gets very frustrating when those of us in the industry try to explain what we do, bust false myths, etc, only to continue to have people talk or type over us saying, "nope, this is how it really is!" So I asked you what your occupation is as part of my point to say that, ok, you are an engineer, that's great. What would you say if I continued to make accusations as to supposed adverse things engineers do when in reality I don't have a clue? Or I am just going off of misleading youtube vids? What would you say after a while of listening to that? You would share my frustration, I guarantee you.
As for me, I spent time away from the family operation when I was young, working for neighboring operations, as well as an operation 100 miles from home for a period of years. Some things were done differently, no doubt, and some I found were better than the way we were doing things at home as we fed cattle in the feedlot. I took those ideas home and incorporated them and saw immediate improvements to the business, not that it was bad, but as you said there is always room for improvement. As I have in other posts, I chose the handle "Been There" for a good reason!!

Wow! So now I’m a “blue collar individual”? Are you serious? No, you didn’t say that EXPLICITLY, but what you said in both your lead-in to and in Paragraph 3 implies that inescapably and undeniably. What size is that ‘superiority complex’ you put on every day, Mr. Engineer? If it’s a hat, it must be about a size 10 ½. If you have direct reports, they must love working for somebody who ‘respects’ them so much.
Go back and look at my posts and see where I have “promoted the farm industry to no end”. I have tried, for the most part, to keep ‘opinion’ out of this – although it has gotten the better of me at times – but nowhere have I said “I/We do it right and nothing should change”, or even anything to that effect. I have had very little to say about the “farm industry”, actually, other than to correct serious misinformation when it was posted, yours included.
You talk about “continuous improvement”. What do you want to talk about? X-bar charts? R charts? Cpk’s? Number of defects vs. number defective – you’re an engineer, so you should know these aren’t the same. What kind of sample size do you propose that one should use? What about sampling frequency? Small operations typically only sell calves once a year, if that helps you with your decision. Should we be using subjective data or only objective? Is a discrete scale acceptable or must we use a continuous scale? So many variables to investigate and the ‘turnaround ‘on the data is so slow. Should we use a partial factorial design instead of a full factorial? What about a Plackett-Burman, so we only have to include the potential min and max levels of our variables, thereby significantly reducing the number of ‘runs’ we have to make to collect our data. How in the world did a mere “blue collar individual” come up with all this?

Perhaps, then, you can tell us what the prevailing results are from the body of research work that has been done over the last 30-35 years at the land-grant universities in this country who have studied grass-fed vs. grain-fed beef. Most, if not all, of these SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH PROJECTS will have included organoleptic evaluations of the two (if you don’t know what that is, look it up – this “blue collar individual” knows). If you are producing a product that isn’t as widely accepted as another, similar product in the marketplace – especially if it’s food and it doesn’t taste as good – it won’t sell, regardless of how good it is for you.
You do have valid concerns about corn-fed vs. grass-fed production practices. I am going to comment more on that in another post.
Upon further thought, I have decided not to pursue the grass-fed vs. grain-fed discussion. I have a feeling that Ryan may be doing something along those lines in the future, so there’s no need for me to do that here now. Even a ‘basic’ discussion of all the pertinent facets will be article-length.
Since you are into ‘researching’ this topic, though, I will leave you with a list of things you should look into if you really want “the scoop” on the differences; the debate isn’t quite as ‘cut-and-dried’ as you seem to believe: 1) USDA “quality grades” for beef – pay particular attention to the ‘components’ of the quality grade, as they will be important later, 2) caloric density of “grains” vs. “grasses”, 3) feed conversion ratios on “grains” vs. “grasses”, and 4) pasture density. This is by no means a ‘comprehensive’ list of the things involved, but together they constitute a pretty decent starting point.
@What? I wasn't calling anyone blue collar (which is not even an insult if I did, it just is a quick descriptor of the field you may work in). My father is a mechanic who owns a few acres that are farmed out each year. We had a few livestock when I was kid for fun. I grew up in a crappy trailer in the middle of the sticks and every person in my immediate and extended family has worked in a factory or on a farm for most of my life. The company I work for today was started by many blue collar AC mechanics and many of their attitudes persist in our company today.

This 'time lapse' garbage due to 'quarantine' is getting kind of old.
I grew up in a farming area of Ohio, farmers are very hard workers who don't really get paid enough or can't really make a great living for the type of work they do every day. One summer I worked for a farmer "making hay", we started at 9 in the morning and worked until the sun went down, his wife made us a sandwich for lunch and then for dinner we ate 2 plate's of food. One of the jobs I will remember for the rest of my life.
My family was involved in agriculture of various types and I've lived on farms not owned by my family. The article is more of an apparent attempt to defuse the arguments of those who want to convert the U.S. and the world to become totally vegetarian than an explanation of how the beef processing chain works.
That having been said, people involved in famioy farm agriculture int the U.S. work hard and assume considerable financial and other risks in producing food products which, at least in the U.S., consume plrobably the least worldwide percentage of the average family's income in getting food onto peoples' tables. Farming in general requires large capital investment in equipment, seed, and other inputs, the weather is an uncontrollable factor and often is hostile, prices received for what is produced often are higfly variable and are at the mercy of commoditise speculators and traders which are beyond the control of the agricultural producer – the list goes on and is extensive. Generally, the percentage of consumer food expenditures which is received by farmers is tiny in comparison with what processors and retailers get while farmers assume nearly all of the risk involved in production. Farming people generally live miles from needed services such as doctors, hospitals, schools, dentists, shops and stores, etc. If the farming operation involves animals there is the high cost for any veterinary care which is needed and there is an increasing shortiage of vets, labor costs for hired help can be probibitive. Yet family farmers embody the qualities which have given rise the the U.S. stereotype of people who are honest, trusting, inventive, self-sufficient yet willing to help neighors in need, and caring for their environment..
There are cable (and presumably satellite TV channels either dedicated to agrucultural news and life and others which show programs having to do with agriculture, It would be worthwhile for non-agricultural people to make use of these and other opportunities to learn more about family farm agriculture and even that which is more corporation-based.

But hey... no one has a gun to your head forcing you to farm... you can be a ballerina, an insurance salesman, join the army, or become a pilot... etc...etc...
Well, it's true that there is no gun-to-the-head compuslon to be involved in agriculture at least in the U.S., but if everyone who is farming and ranching decides to chuck that and do something else you'd better get ready to plow up and plant your back yard and hope that you can suvive! LOL . . .
Nice try, adn dripping with bul__t. 97% of the farms may be family-owned, but 90% of the cattle comes from large feedlot producers, where they are unnecessarily fed grain and corn, needlessly pumped full of antibiotics (whicn are creating hugely adaptive superbugs). The only reason they are fed antobiotics is that they are choking on their own filth, crammed in there from greedy producers who view animals as statistics and commodities. The human population would be much better off not eating beef at all, which is high in saturated fat, concentrated toxins, raises your homocysteine levels, contributing to global warming. The slaughterhouses are also a hellhole where plenty of cows are skinned and dismembered while still fully conscious. Remember Fast Food Nation? None of the slaughterhouses in the US would allow filming any scenes within. What's to hide? The horrible nature of it all, that's what. Less dollars for the beef industry. But - keep eating people. Eat yourselves into the ICU and nursing homes.
This just goes to show how little you know. You think that cattle spend their entire lives in a feedlot? Is that where they are born and raised? No.
Read the posts below. Lots of factual information on how meat is produced told by people who are in the industry. Do what the article says and connect with someone in the business to find real answers. You tube videos put out by HSUS and PETA are the real lies. I've been around cattle all my life and can't believe the falsehoods that are out there. University studies, articles on farm related websites, etc are excellent sources of real information. Instead of spending your time spouting off lies that you are taking as facts, go get some real facts, then come back here and have some half way intelligent discussion.
How many farms have you visited? You seem to confuse comments about *farms* with *slaughterhouses* – not the same. But then I suspect that, like the majority who connect the two, that's intentional. And I suspect that the bulk of your exposure and focus is on negativity in animals rights videos, as that is what you want to see. Have a great day anyway.

I haven't read all the comments but I haven't seen any that address the criticism that cattle farming is grossly inefficient. I heard that it takes 13 pounds of corn to produce 1 pound of beef. Is this accurate? If so it seems as if that 13 pounds of corn and the land it is grown on could be used much more efficiently to produce food and other products.
Inefficiency is often called "the free market' by GOP parrots. The outrageously high meat consumption of Americans is contributing greatly to the destruction of our world. CNN is doing their job to address this problem by publishing propaganda pieces that promote the illusion of "down on the farm".
The only propaganda as it pertains to this particular article is garbage posts like yours. Maybe, just maybe, agriculture-that's an occupation of real people-is trying to make an increased effort to tell the real story so that people can know where their food comes from. I am not a moronic conspiracy theorist or an outlandish PETA extremist. I disagree with PETA on most issues and I am not even sure who HSUS is, they seem to be mentioned a lot in these comments.
I have done my homework. I grew up in a rural community and have family members that are farmers. I am an engineer, my wife is a doctor, I work for a company that builds and exports products. Your claim that farming is for "real people" and whatever I do is for imaginary people would be more insulting if it made sense. I don't sit around all day smoking weed and making flip-flops out of jute.
I have done my homework and I am passionate about this topic. The food industry in America is a huge factor in the reason why America is in such a poor state of health.
As an engineer the inefficiencies of feeding cows corn is absurd to me. If not for the government welfare program known as subsidies there is no way this should be profitable at the current prices of beef. If the free market, and the consumer, truly determine what farmers grown and sell, then why is such a large portion of America's farmland dedicated to growing corn and soybeans that are heavily subsidized?
My wife is a medical doctor, and her professional opinion is that veganism is much more healthy than consuming animal products. I am not an incense burning Buddhist preaching reincarnation asking you not to harm another entities "life energy" or any similar pile of crap. I am saying that being a vegan is healthier than not. This claim is supported by the opinions of many professions who are more intelligent than you and myself. Their opinions are supported by very legitimate scientific studies that show the benefits of not consuming animal protein. Unfortunately no one gets rich by selling broccoli, so the research dollars for such research are few and far between. Clearly more virtuous endeavors including deciding if grass fed or corn fed beef is fatter, this research earns money. Celery does not.
Lastly, the industrial farming process is doing irreparable (at least in our grandchildrens' lifetimes) damage to the environment.
Lets make a list of these things.
Corn Fed Beef is...
1. inefficient in a world where energy costs money (fossil fuels purchased from the mid east mostly)
2. unhealthy (higher fat content, less Omega-3s, less protein/lb)
3. contributes to the industrial farming process that harms our lands
4. contributes to the welfare program of corn subsidies
Grass Fed Beef is...
1. Directly converts the energy of the sun into meat (grass is the middle man) and requires no fossil fuels
2. is healthier (more lean meat, more nutritious)
3. if managed properly, can contribute to the repair of ravaged lands by allowing the cows to be a part of an ecosystem
4. requires no government subsidies
What exactly am I missing here? Your "holier-than-thou" attitude as if I am an ignorant hippy didn't have a lot of substance, just claims that I am talking out of my butt. I am not interested in a political fight with a line in the sand, I want all of us to be honest and forthcoming with information, that includes telling the whole story. This fluff propaganda piece put together by CNN does not tell the full story, not even close to it. It tells the fun and happy part of the story, they conveniently left out many important points.
If you prefer the fatty taste of corn fed beef and think it is worth the cost of taxpayer money, environmental damage, and giving more money to the middle east, enjoy. Personally, I do not think it is worth a single one of those things, let alone all 3.
This is how it works in our world with our beef:
- We have about 90 head of mama cows and about 15 heifers (female bovines who have yet to have their first calf) who are bred or just gave birth in the past few months- we have cattle on about 2,000 of our 4,000 acres. The cattle are spread out on various sections. Two of our places are half sections (320 acres) and the other are quarters (160 acres). We're well below our stocking rates (the number of cow/calf pairs you can have per acre to keep the land healthy) on all our places and could bring more cattle in right now.
-So, the baby calves are born and they nurse on the mamas until they reach a certain weight. During that time, at some point, we do take them away for a couple hours and we brand them, castrate them if they are male and deworm them. The only time we medicate a calf is when they are sick. We have a vet castrate the calves because my father-in-law is almost 80 and its just easier to do it that way. All our calves are born out in the field and the only time we ever assist with a birth is when the heifers are calving in for the first time. When we do this, we keep them behind our house in a 5 acre pin and keep an eye on them and only intervene if they have trouble.
-We then ween the calves when they get to a certain size and let them graze pasture until they get to a certain weight.
- This is where the change happens for us- because of the cost associated with marketing and the regulations that are placed on slaughtering animals, our operation takes these calves to the sale barn. To this point, our calves for the most part unless they've been sick are only grass-fed and antibiotic free. But when they go to the sale barn, we have no control over who buys them.
-This is where individuals need to know about how things work. This is where your dollar does the talking. If you choose to buy beef that its raised in a certain way, then you're supporting what your values are. If you don't care, then you can buy whatever. The other thing to remember too is that the feedlots in my knowledge aren't the processors- they sell the cattle to slaughter plants that pump out the hamburger and steaks. So knowing that part of the process is important too and once again you decide with your dollars.
Now I'm not everyone but our operation is no different than 90% of all the other farmers that I know and work with. This is kind of the way the beef gets to the table. It didn't say all of this in the article but that's they way it works in our world.

I think there is some really helpful dialogue that happened in the comment section. I do want to say "thank you" though because while PETA and HSUS spend a lot of time warping facts and painting a picture that isn't accurate, there are also ag groups that are quick to immediately jump up and say "We don't have a problem" and then proceed to stick their heads in the sand. None of these "groups" are the people- these groups make their money by working people up to get them to start behind a fight that often times they make much bigger than it is. As a city girl who fell in love with the country boy and who is now raising two kids on the farm, it always fun to learn and if you haven't spent time on a farm, you should at least take the time to read a blog or two of people who are actually farming.
As far as cattle production is concerned, there are the fields and the feedlots. Its the consumer that drives the market for the feedlot type beef because we love our white fat and wouldn't stand the taste of yellow fat. And I could go on and on about how difficult it is to make it work for your bottom line trying to market your own natural grass-fed beef.
Anyway, there wasn't a lot of "meat" to the article (no pun intended) but its a complex subject. I appreciate that the author looked at both sides saying that as a farmer is not fair to be attacked under false pretenses but at the same time we have to step up and admit that we can make changes too. Just remember, farmers mostly caused the Dust Bowl but when they were given the tools to do things better, they did it, and not only did they do it but they continue to do it and we've now made it through some of the worst droughts without seeing Oklahoma end up on the East Coast. Just work with us and come with an open hand of friendship, it will get you a lot further.

If humanity ever has World War III, and this crazy world ever comes to an end, and technology is wiped out, and humans are sent back to the stone age, and live live cave men again, I find it hard to believe that the surviving people from PETA, HSUS and VEGANS will pass up a chance to dine on their pretty little dogs and cats, especially when they are starving from lack of food.
So lets give the farmers a break. These are good and honest people. I am sure that 99% of the people who make fun of and ridicule farmers because they butcher cattle, or hogs, or chickens, are not capable of running a farmers farm just for one week, even with the farmers help.

@Ryan Goodman- Do all farmers do their own slaughtering? I don't think so but correct me if I'm wrong. I do believe farmers are good people and care about the animals they raise. However, to make money, farmers must sell their cattle do they not? Sell their live animals to big companies and corporations. That's when what happens to our livestock food becomes hazy. Farmers cannot control what happens to their animals once sold and big companies and corporations are all about making a profit. Animal rights aside, We have a right to know exactly how our livestock food is processed from birth to packaging. I don't believe you truly answered that question in your article.

You're right that I didn't explain all of the steps involved in cattle production. That wasn't the point I wanted to make, because a single post would give no justice to everything that happens. What I can do is encourage you to be more open to conversations and encourage farmers to do the same. Although I am from a family farm, I have worked in what many call corporate cattle feedlots. Farmers love thier animals too. It takes several hours to butcher a cow, and package it, and then you have to sell it.
It costs too much for farmers to build a facility so they can butcher, and refrigerate their cattle.

but it has to be done, so people can eat.

People do their Master's theses and Doctorial dissertations on only small parts of those topics, among many others. Actually, I have no problem with the idea of eating meat, circle oif life and whatnot, I'm a part of it. I don't make the rules , I'm stuck with them like every one else.
What I find barbaric, however, and inhumane is the eating of animals boiled alive. What is even more barbaric is how people try to justify or explain it away.
Am I hypocrite? Yup! Just like the veggies and vegan who don't seem to realize that even their vegetarian and vegan ways require agriculture which requires the destruction of eco systems and species and who think that buying organic actually addresses a problem.
Buying organic and local does help the problem. Organic farms still consume lots of fossil fuels, the good news is that they are less destructive to their ecosystems (I said LESS). A monoculture is never healthy. Most small organic farms do a terrific job of introducing variety and rotation into their crops.
The fact is the planet has far too many people as it is. We cannot consume as much as we do and still live in a balanced ecosystem, we are the problem. That being said, we should all work to contribute less to this problem. Being a vegan who eats primarily local organic produce is a great thing on many levels.

For an article that starts off by saying how it's partly the farmers' fault for not keeping us more informed on how they produce our food...there's really no information in here on how they produce our food. The whole "farmers are people too, and mainly good people" argument is nice, and certainly has a lot of truth to it, but it's still not very informative. Several of the comments posted (thank you, by the way, to the people who posted them) are actually a lot more informative on the actual food production than the original article.
Exactly–there's essentially nothing about "how beef gets to your plate" (and incidentally, the body parts of tortured animals get nowhere near my plate). And then if anyone actually does provide any information about how it gets to your plate, the people who do eat tortured animals are up in arms about it. The severity of their responses, of course, gives a good idea of how self-deluded they are–they can't tolerate any threat to their delusions.
I don't give a rat's behind how the cattle are killed – as long as they taste good when taken off the grill.

I've been reading the comments on this article for a couple of days now. I have a big question on the corn diet. Several people in the business of producing beef cattle have said that most of their lives the majority of cattle are pastured. And are switched to a corn based diet toward the end to gain weight before slaughter. This is a diet supposedly formulated to make sure the cattle are healthy and gain quickly.
Detractors are saying that any corn based diet is bad for the cattle and they can't digest it.
If they can't digest it then they certainly wouldn't gain much weight, so why use it? But how would this notion of corn is bad for cattle be so prevalant if there wasn't some truth to it?

Bravo! I know from your posts you've been looking for 'real' answers, and it's great to see somebody who has questions form a logical progression in their thoughts.
Corn – the grain – in and of itself probably would not be the best feed for cattle. I'm not a ruminant nutritionist, so I'm not "an expert" on the 'details' here. Corn, mixed into the regular feed of grass/hay, if not added in too large a proportion does not hurt the animals, but 1) causes them to gain weight faster, 2) increases the amount of intramuscular [IM] and external fat ("finish") on the animal, and actually changes the taste of the meat due to changing the kinds of fatty acids that make up the triglycerides in the fat. IM fat is one of the key components of the quality grade – you can't have "choice" beef unless there is a sufficient amount of IM fat. As you surmised – if one is trying to get them to gain weight, then one isn't going to feed them something that makes them sick. This mix of grain/roughage just happens to be exactly what the animals are fed. There could very well be mineral supplements added, too.
There are times, especially early in the year when grass is just starting to grow well, that the mineral content of the grass isn't sufficient. There is a serious condition that often affects pasture-grazed cattle at this time that is known as "grass tetany". It is caused by a lack of magnesium in the diet, and it can – and usually will – be fatal if not treated. Treatment is relatively simple, and involves direct injection of a magnesium-laced solution into the animal, usually into the intraperitoneal cavity, but it can be done intravenously if the situation is dire.

@ Ally – Upon re-reading my post here, there is a correction that needs to be made. The first sentence in the last paragraph should end with "the mineral content of the grass MAY NOT BE sufficient". The magnesium deficiency doesn't occur 100% of the time, but when it does, it's bad news for the cattle. (I got in too big a hurry.)

One last thing on "diet". Ryan mentioned 'supplementing' them with vitamin, minerals, etc. In a lot of places, if not all, you have to provide salt for the cattle. They need it, and they can't get enough from their diet. The potential magnesium deficiency is easily averted by providing an ingestible magnesium source for them – these are readily available in the form of "mag blocks", which are very dense blocks containing magnesium and, usually, other minerals in a molasses-laced "carrier" that the cattle lick. I've been at this so long I forget that some things that are 'innate' to me are completely 'foreign' to others who haven't been around cattle.
Ally, great question. People spend years in school learning about cattle nutrition and continue learning their entire lives. It's a complex process, but here's a brief answer.
Cattle do not have a stomach like our's. It's made of 4 compartments, the largest being the rumen which is full of microbes to digest nutrients from the feed into smaller parts (volatile fatty acids) that are used for building blocks that can be utilized in the body. This complex stomach is how cows can break down so much plant material that humans cannot.
Those microbes are made of two populations that break down different sugars. One to break down cellulose (predominant in grasses, hay, plant leaf material) the other breaks down starch (predominant in grains).
If the animal has more microbes to break down forages, it can handle some grain with no problem. We can transition the animal's diet over to a higher % of grains and be perfectly fine as long as it is done at the right pace to allow the microbes that digest starch to increase accordingly. This is where the animal nutritionists come in and make sure we are feeding the right amount at the right pace.
Feeding corn might make an animal sick (like an upset stomach) if it is fed too much grain too quickly – called acidosis. If this were to happen, we can back off the higher energy feed (which includes more grains than forages) and feed them a little extra forage to settles the stomach.
Cattle are on a pasture based diet the majority of their lives. Young cattle finished on high energy diets may spend as little as 90 days or up to 200 days in the feedlots (where high grain diets are fed). Even on pasture, cattle may receive some grain feed. The feedlot diets are not completely corn. These are a mixture of high quality grasses, grains, grain by-products (like from ethanol or distillery processes), and mineral, vitamin, or fat supplements. We utilize grains like corn because starch has a high energy value available to the animal, allowing more energy to be digested and used for growth.

So what I'm hearing is that a full "corn" diet is truly not right for the cattle. Rather a balance is needed for optimum health. Is a silage mixture considered the "corn" diet? Or more on the roughage side?
It also sounds like having an all pasture-based "grass" diet can be less nutritious for the animals depending on the quality of the grass on the particular grazing land, or time of year and/or weather patterns. Therefore supplements and those "evil injections" can be required if the grass is lacking in nutrients during a portion of the animals life. Yes? Or no?

Keep in mind that, except for the folks trying to fatten the steer (or heifer) for meat, the diet may not be maximized (via supplementing whatever grains or higher quality feeds, cuz supplements cost $$). Farmers will adjust diets to find the cheapest thing out there that'll get the cow or calf where he/she needs to be. So a momma cow (who will live maybe 10 years, and whose primary job in life is to make babies) will eat what's in the fields, and only get a supplement if necessary for life or a particular production goal (eg, getting pregnant). She may even lose weight in a spotty pasture late in the fall, but she'll make up for it when the pastures get lush again. Like the experts here have made pretty clear, corn has a place in the feeder calf's diet, but it's part of a balanced ration. Silage is a cool farmer's invention, in that it's roughage (which we know the cow's rumen likes), but it's made (in a "silo") in such a way that some of the roughage gets converted to a higher quality/higher protein content. And besides being a great food source, cows LOVE it. Those of us who love the cattle business and love being around cows are very happy watching cattle eat something they love– kind of like the satisfaction city folks get from feeding their dogs! In fact, once in a while I feed my cows a little corn (though it's expensive), just because they love it.
That's right Ally, a balance is what we're looking for.
In case some do not know what silage is – the entire plant is harvested (stalk, leaves, and grain) before full maturity, chopped, and placed in an oxygen free environment (silo, bunk, etc). The plant material is fermented to break down portions of the plant cells, but not moldy. This makes the nutrients more readily available and easier to digest.
Silage value differs depending on the type grain crop being used (alfalfa, corn, wheat, grasses, or other grains) and how mature the plant is when "ensiled". It can be 50/50 forage/grain portion of the diet up to 25/75. This changes in different parts of the country.
When I say supplement here, I'm generally talking nutrient or dietary supplement. Most of these are oral through the feed. These can be grain-feeds, sources of extra energy or protein, minerals, vitamins, or things that help the stomach microbes to their job better or more efficiently. This last part is where some people incorrectly label some supplements as antibiotics.
Great questions, Ally. I was just going to add to the others who posted some great answers, that corn is typically "rolled" or put through a roller mill to where the kernel is basically cracked into pieces in order for the starch contained within the kernel to be more easily digested. An un-cracked kernel has a protective coat on it, as does any seed, that, if left intact, is more difficult for cattle to digest.

Like it or not PETA we all were born to die and I know that if I can help serve at least one person in my life I would do it. I can't help but think that the purpose for livestock is to serve us as humans. I have been a vegetarian I whole-heartedly believe in animal rights, but I also see the value in a good quality hamburger. I know that not everyone will agree and may not understand my viewpoints. All too often, the louder folks at HSUS (whose aim it is to eliminate animal agriculture) and PETA (whose goal it is to create inflammatory and news-making "stories" for which the media to use to achieve PETA aims) are the ones who seem to control the media's coverage. CNN, you are giving a farmer the voice to be heard. Congratulations to the decisionmakers at CNN who stood up to the louder activitist groups to make this happen.
We all must recognize when we're being "played" and "manipulated" by special interest groups. I personally don't want my children growing up to a world with food that is too costly, not consistent in availability, and doesn't contain meat as an option. Therefore, true media outlets will recognize the special interest group manipulation, and like CNN, let the little guy speak.

Having been raised on a farm while still a very young boy, I have always had a deep appreciation for their hard work and tenacity to continue that way of life. My biggest beef (no pun intended) with the farming community is with the large corporate owned producers that have been forced to change their livestock management practices to increase production at the sacrifice of a quality product. Genetically altered beef, chicken and pork is not only unhealthy for the general populace, it is unethical and morally wrong. These practices rank right up there on the "YUCK" scale with pink slime and the like. The FDA should let the farmers do what they know how and have been doing for generations instead of monkeying around with our food supply. What's next? Soylent Green?

Ummm, Intheknow, you need to do more research prior to commenting. Pretty much everything that is sold or advertised on TV is genetically modified. Monsanto owns 99% of the soybeans in the US, which are genetically modified, and their soybeans go into 99% of the food sold in grocery stores. Watch the movie Food Inc., read the book "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollen, listen to some of Michael Pollen's interviews. It's unbelievable what our government allows us to eat. Scary. All westernized diseases (Diabetes, Obesity, etc) are 100% preventable by removing these types of foods from your diet. Go by these rules and it will help immediately. "Eat Food, not too much, mostly plants"- Michael Pollen; Only buy products with 5 ingredients or less. The ingredients in most products are unidentifiable- therefore it's not really food. If your great grandmother wouldn't know what those ingredients are... don't trust them.

[Whispering] "There is not genetically altered meat." You know this, and I know this, but apparently "Loopman" and "GoOrganic" don't know this. I just wanted to see what they would come back with – if they came back with anything. Apparently, they can't.
Cattle in feedlots eat genetically modified corn and soybeans as well as a lot of other stuff they shouldn't be eating, like remenents from the slaughter house. You are what you eat eats and when your pork and your cattle eat genetically modified food, that makes their meat contain the genetically modified make up of what they ate. Studies in Canada are showing pesticides from GM food showing up in fetuses. Wake up people. Some farmers are great. When those same farmers sell their cattle to feedlots to grow up in manure mud and get shot up with antibiotics every day and eat crap they aren't suppose to eat, then farmers take a huge dive in my opinion.
But do take the author's suggestion to get to know your farmer. Buy your meat directly from them. Do not buy it from the grocery store because that is all feedlot, genetically modified fed, food. Know your farmer, know your food.
@Megan, eating genetically modified food does not make your genes genetically modified. This is such a basic misunderstanding of chemistry and biology it is hard to comprehend.
Yes, eating poisons is a bad thing, but unless that food was genetically modified *to be* a poison, the fact that it is genetically modified is irrelevant to what your body uses it for.
@Megan I'm sorry but you are wrong. I encourage you to visit websites of the likes of Iowa State, Kansas State, Nebraska and other university animal science departments. From there you can search for studies where trials were conducted to determine if feeding GM ingredients had any affects that were different from cattle fed non-GM feedstuffs. In every single one you will find, they will conclude that absolutely no differences were found between the two groups. No effect on health of the animal, no effect on quality of the meat, and on and on. Some even say that the only Con when it comes to feeding GM is the false, negative perception of the public.
Also, it is a misconception that GM = pesticides. While certain GM crops such as corn have traits bred into them to resist certain insects, for example, does not mean they were injected with pesticides. Pesticides are chemicals (not genetically coded material) that are applied to crops if there is an infestation of certain insects. I am a little dated, but insecticide products I was familiar with while on the farm were products called Counter, Furadan, and Lorsban. These types of commercial products have nothing to do with GM. The are man-made chemicals to kill insects. And they are not applied close to harvest. They are applied early in the season to where by the time harvest rolls around, they have dissipated and the threat of insect damage is gone. If seed companies insert traits in corn to make it produce an ear that is an inch longer thereby increasing the yield per acre, that is another example of how GM can positively affect the outcome. That is not injecting chemical or other compound, that is manipulating the DNA in a manner that is far more advanced than cross breeding over the course of years, maybe even decades to gain a result. Again, go back and read the studies by universities that specialize in these things to find that GM will not carry through to you as you eat meat. It just plain won't happen, period.
Not many living things that aren't genetically altered... Your dog's beautiful coloring is the result of selective or "line breeding" (a nice word for it), when, 15 generations back, a breeder bred the bitch to the male pup with the most beautiful coat. YOU were genetically altered when you ugly dad, who was rich, married your beautiful mom, making you half beautiful. Your dad's genetic destiny, had he not been able to bag a beautiful spouse, would've been a woman as ugly as he. The resulting altered genetics were YOU. Similar altering brings us the most beautiful flowers, the most productive species of wheat, the tastiest beef, even the best athletes (how many accomplished professional athletes breed soft, uninspired couch potatoes?). ENJOY the benefits of all that genetic altering.

I'm sure the majority of us have heard about the cloning research being done (mostly on sheep). However, 'What?' was trying to make the point that currently cloned animals are not authorized to be slaughtered and sold as food. That day is likely decades away.

Everything you eat is genetically modified. Whether it's Monsanto's soybeans or the nice broccoli you got down at the organic farmer's market. There's no such thing as broccoli in the wild. We (humans) bred it into existence. That something was genetically modified by farmers over many generations rather than scientists in a lab doesn't say anything about its safety or how 'good' it is for you.
There are many things to be concerned about in our food chain; antibiotic overuse leading to superbugs, our overdependence on simple sugar.....genetically modified foods is not one of those things *in and off itself*.

Let's try this one more time: Genetic modification is not the same thing as selective breeding. Selective breeding is not even a kind of genetic modification. The two have nothing to do with each other.
@Paul, you speak with authority for someone who seems to have absolutely no understanding of genetics. Selective breeding is absolutely genetic modification. It is the artificial analogy of natural selection. What's being modified (selected for) are the organism's genes.
Again, whether or not this is done in a lab or over many generations by farmers is irrelevant to the point, that genetic modification is not in and of itself dangerous.

Great article, I am a college student and cattle producer, I am currently working on a large cattle ranch in Montana. There has been a negative image put on American beef production and as I am proud to be a part of producing some of the safest and most nutritious food supply in the world I know that we are sharing the same passion and that is a passion for the future of American beef production. I have visited many ranches, feedlots and processing facilities across this country and have yet to see cattle being mistreated. In fact beef producers work very hard to keep the stress levels of their cattle inexistent or low at the most. Many people do not realize that cattle producers don't make much of a salary and some years none at all. The question is asked well then why do you do it; because we have a passion for the industry and providing the best life for our cattle and producing an excellent product for not only Americans but consumers all around the world. As you have said I also encourage everyone to speak with a farmer or rancher and ask questions about where your food comes from and how it is produced it is a right of the consumer. I appreciate your efforts in sharing the story of American beef production and hope that you continue your great work.

The farmers that I've spoken with have always been kind and friendly, and if asked nicely, almost always let me fly my hawks on their lands (they get the added bonus of reduced rabbits, pigeons and starlings whenever I do, so its a win-win!) I find it ironic that the government promotes healthy lifestyles but then subsidizes corn that gets fed to cows to make them fatter. What?
Two things you need to do to promote anti-obesity. Neither would we ever have the political willpower nor necessarily should we be draconian. 1) Have people eat less calories (doesn't matter where they come from as much). A fat tax would work. Think it will fly? and 2) Compel exercise. Sweat and calories. Put that is intensely interventionist where freedom of choice should prevail.
Instead, encouraging less calories and more exercise is advisable.Otherwise whether corn subsidies or sugary drink sizes, you basically have a "fad diet" that promises a lot and delivers little.
Obesity... not caused by the food that we eat... it is caused by the lethargic lifestyle that children are living now. Instead of kids going outside to play baseball, they are playing MLB 2012. Instead of riding bikes with their friends, they are texting on their phones. Instead of making time to go to a park and play, kids are sitting on Facebook or surfing the internet. Kids need to burn the calories that they intake, and we are eating the same food that we did decades ago... there are just less opportunities for kids to burn them off!

Except for one 'modification' . . . it's not that there are "less opportunities" for the kids – or adults – to burn off the calories – it's that there is less advantage taken of the opportunities to burn them off. They had rather busy themselves with the proven body-building 'exercises' that you do aptly listed.

An intense workout will burn 1000 calories. You can eat 1000 calories in a few minutes with little effort if you choose your food unwisely.
Diet is the biggest contributor to obesity in our country. Combine that with decreased physical activity, decreased sleep, increased caffeine and you have yourself a veritable time bomb of tragic human health.

That number is probably true, but more than 99% of all meat comes from inhumane factory farms, and all animals go to the same slaughter house. There is no such thing as a family owned humane slaughter house.

Amarillo, TX? Dodge City, KS? Ft. Morgan, CO? Or maybe it is one of the other several slaughterhouses around the country? Or maybe only one of these establishments works on any given day, so "all animals go to the same slaughter house", whichever one that may be, on that particular day?
I'm going to assume you left out an adjective there somewhere, because you can't possibly be that naive. (Oh, by the way, at least one of the above list doesn't slaughter "fed" cattle, so you can mark it off the list if you can figure out which one it is.)
Are you missing the point on purpose? It means that whether animals are raised in family farms or factory farms, they end up in the same places (each in the one nearest to the farm) and are killed the same way.
There is no such thing as humane slaughter or slaughter done with tender loving care.
I'm going to use little words here, so you can keep up . . .
When you take an animal to the vet for a 'procedure', the vet "puts them to sleep" prior to cutting on them, then cuts on them, and then they wake up – by design. When they are "put to sleep", they are RENDERED UNCONSCIOUS.
When an animal is slaughtered – barring kosher and halal – they are RENDERED UNCONSCIOUS. The only differences are that fancy anesthesia isn't used and the animals don't wake up – again, by design. This isn't 'voluntary', people, this is the law, and it has been for over 50 years.
To paraphrase, in the battle of wits, you are fighting the unarmed. Give it up before your heart attack overrides your Bayer aspirin supply.

Thank you for your concern. I really am "biting my tongue", for the most part, trying to hold back here, but it's getting harder. I look at it this way, though – if I can get just one person reading these responses to see through the half-truths, misinformation, and flat-out lies that are being dumped on the American public these days (including this thread) regarding meat production, then that's one person who is better educated in reality than there was. Maybe, at some point in their life, they can help somebody else see past the smoke-and-mirrors, too.

Ryan, I was not including the "article" when I mentioned 'this thread' in reference to all the 'junk' being passed off as "information" these days. The 'thread' consists solely of the responses. I wanted to clarify that. You did a find job with the article.
That's nuts. OF COURSE there is humane slaughter, and of course there are such family-owned plants. Veterinarians like me assure that animals are treated humanely. That doesn't mean treated like humans. It means handled in a manner that an evolved, thoughtful person, aware and educated on animal husbandry and physiology, deems adequate to minimize suffering. As already mentioned, slaughtering, when done correctly (and I'd estimate that it happens humanely at least 99% of time; in fact it is the USDA veterinary inspector's job to shut down a plant's operation if this is not the case– and they will do this!), does not cause the animal stress or anxiety. The animal is not aware of pending death, and literally/honestly/medically/scientifically don't feel it happen. Dr. Temple Grandin (Animal Science professor at ColoStateU, and a great movie was made about her a couple years ago) is an excellent advisor/opinion leader on this subject.
"Veterinarians" who work in slaughterhouses are the moral equivalent of the "physicians" who did "medical research" in concentration camps a few decades ago.
Maybe you should tell that to the federal government, who REQUIRES that a veterinarian be on-site at any slaughter facility producing meat to go into inter-state commerce to inspect each and every animal that is to be slaughtered to ensure that they are suitable for human consumption – otherwise they are CONDEMNED, and cannot go into the human food supply.

You're choosing youtube as you source of information? I understand there are many anti-farm videos and articles out there, but instead of believing social media sites, please try to get reliable information from a farmer, the people that are actually producing the food. Domino's has it right, they don't buy into the lies put forth by certain activist groups, they get their true information from the farmers.
Sadly, Youtube or scare documentaries are where many people are getting their information. Thank you Ryan for writing a well-written piece. As for feeding corn to cattle, I suggest you try an experiment. Release a group of cows where there have an equal opportnity to move either into a corn field (with mature corn) or a lush pasture of grasses. They will go to the corn field everytime. That tells me it is indeed a natural food choice. Despite what Michael Pollan may say, corn has been fed to finish cattle for well over 100 years. The biggest problem is cows will not self-limit. That is why farmers and feedlot operators spend millions of dollars on nutritionists to feed cattle in just the right way. There are a few bad operations which abuse the system and push cattle too fast to get them on the market ASAP. But they are the exception, not the rule. Don't paint all farmers with the same broad brush. It would be like saying all parents are child abusers, just because a few are. But we know that isn't true, because of course we all know good parents. Unforenately for farmers that is not the case. Most people don't know any farmers, so in the void of real information they look on YouTube.
Please read what real farmers like Ryan have written. It is the truth, and he has no ulterior motive, no book to sell, no movie to market. He is just a farmer, going beyond his comfort zone to let the consumers know we are still here raising animals and producing food for our families and yours.

Haha. What a bunch of propaganda. This article is a shameful representation of the cattle industry in our country. CAFOs are not mentioned once. While it is true that the handful of farmers still personally handling cattle do it properly, the fact remains that most farmers have gotten out of the cattle business. Individuals cannot compete with the prices of business farming operations that have several million head of cattle.
The beef industry is a thuggish cartel and they always have been, this prop piece is a great example of their attempts to untarnish their "good name". Oprah was sued for saying she doesn't like beef. BigBeef pays out millions of dollars a year to lobbyists to relax regulations and increase subsidies for corn/soybeans, among other things that benefit their monopoly.
Unless you personally know the farmer, don't buy beef. If you really want some beef, go meet a farmer and make friends with a butcher to get yourself and your family a cleaner, healthier product. You will pay more, but quality has a price (and you wont find it on a $1 menu).
Your comments, although not based on any factual information, bring up a wonderful point of view. This is the misinformation that we struggle with everyday. 90%of cattle that go into our food supply start out in small ( less than 100 head) cow calf operations. These operations are managed by local farmers and ranchers. I'm not saying that the finishing and slaughter of cattle is not big business just stating that cattle are only in so called CAFOs for around 90 to 120 days of their lives. The rest of their lives are spent in wheat fields, fields of corn stalks, or in my case very dry pastures in SW Arkansas.
The lobbist that you speak of are not paid for by big business either. Every rancher pays a fee when they sell cattle that goes to the beef check off program and the largest farm lobbying group in the US is Farm Bureau which is funded through individual farmers and rancher 35 dollar yearly membership fee and donations.
Of course calves are not born in CAFOs, I never implied that they were. The last 90-120 days you mention may be one full half of the animals life. CAFOs contribute greatly to unhealthy/unsanitary meat and pollution. The days leading up to slaughter are important and have many effects on the quality of meat and a lot of beef is finished in CAFOs where the livestock stand in manure up to their knees that is literally considered toxic waste due to all of the antibiotics and other chemicals that are a byproduct of industrial farming.
A quick Google search will result in literally dozens of organizations that lobby to positively influence public and government opinion of the industrial farming industry. If the good old fashioned "down on the farm" corner of America is such a paradise, why must millions of dollars be spent each year convincing us of that?
I come from a rural area in Indiana and in the past 30 years a vast majority of farmers have gotten out of livestock because the industrial farming process had driven the price of meat below the cost of operations for small guy taking product from calf/piglet/egg to slaughter. Their options were get big or get out, most got out. We now have cheap meat (in every sense of the word) that is worse for us, worse for the animals, and worse for the environment. The good news is that companies like Cargo-MacMillan have a dozen family members each worth over $1 billion dollars. God Bless the free market!

Since you're making reference to grain-finishing here, you must be talking about "fed" cattle, which are slaughtered at a weight somewhere north – usually way north – of 1200 lbs. Have you ever seen a calf that reached 1200 lbs in 8 months? 10 months? 12 months? You, like another poster who will remain unnamed, don't have a flipping clue what you're talking about.
Lots of comments here attempting to either write the gentlemen’s article off as a PR stunt, or trying to counter the argument of how beef is produced with “facts” that appear to be more like misinformed opinions or closed-minded rants of what some may think is fact. Not that people aren’t entitled to their opinions, but perhaps a little open-mindedness and humility before posting would serve some people on here well. The first point I will make is that those who are calling for more specific information than what the article gives should realize that there is so much more to beef production than what could be outlined in any article. Farmers spend their entire lives learning about it, and like anything, new ideas and technology make for an ongoing learning process. Those who scoff at the fact that there are separate types of degrees in beef production all the way up to PhD should realize this. The article was limited on space, as is any article, and the author was obviously trying to give general points to spark interest and then invite people to engage in further discussion via his blog, social media, and others where you can converse directly with other real-live producers to both speak your piece, and perhaps learn some facts that you can ponder further as they speak their piece. To some of those people that didn’t get this point from the article, I offer a great big “DUH!” Now for some of the other issues that some people outside of the industry claim to be informed about:
Antibiotics: Like everyone reading this, cattle are vaccinated for certain diseases and sickness early in their life and again later in life when entering the feeding process. When you were born you were vaccinated for things like measles, mumps, rubella, etc, to name a few. Prior to starting school and put together with lots of other kids, you received a booster of these vaccinations. Right? Or at least your parents SHOULD have had you vaccinated if you weren’t. No different when it comes to livestock. Likewise when you get sick, let’s say a bacterial infection like strep throat, what do you do? You go to seek treatment via antibiotics to fight the illness because without it, your body likely cannot fight off certain sicknesses on its own. Likewise when cattle get sick. You can’t cure bovine sickness by offering them a blanket and bowl of chicken soup. Without treatment and provision of antibodies to fight the illness, they will suffer and die. Producers do not like to see the animals suffer any more than you do, plus if they die, the farmer (businessperson) loses money. Antibiotics are not pumped into animals for no reason. If you think otherwise, better check your facts and all the more reason to connect with a producer. They are vaccinated ahead of time, and treated to improve their health only when they become sick.
Waste: You can’t potty-train these animals. They go on the ground at any given moment when the feel the urge. However in nearly all feedlots, they first must meet STRICT environmental guidelines. I say “nearly” because I cannot vouch for 100% for sure. Waste management systems and permits cost thousands of dollars, and in the largest of operations, millions of dollars. That’s before they even begin the production process. These operations work every day to remove waste from facilities both by mechanical process of literally scraping it up and hauling it out and by highly ENGINEERED (this is a type of advanced degree) drainage systems to relocate the waste to holding facilities for later removal and use as fertilizer. Sometimes it rains, and as you know, water and dirt make mud. There might be manure still there due to continual animal urges, but again, it is promptly removed by one or more of the processes I describe in fairly short order. Again, all heavily enforced and inspected by environmental regulators to ensure compliance and safety for waste management, runoff, contamination prevention, etc. I can take you out to facilities right now where you can walk among the cattle in your Sunday shoes and not get much more than a light coat of dust on them as long as you avoid the freshly made “pies” here and there. Leaving the waste in the facility promotes bad health and disease in the cattle also. Refer to my point above, that producers do everything in their power to prevent disease, discomfort, etc, which if left unchecked, would result in poor health, poor performance in the production of beef, and therefore loss of money to the business. There are facts out there that support the claim that lawns in urban areas are far more “contaminated” with both commercial fertilizers and pet wastes on a per acre basis than can even come close in rural America. Think about that the next time you let Fido out the back door to do his business and spread 75 lbs of miracle grow on your small plot of lawn grass. By the way, there are advanced degrees available in waste management all by itself, believe it or not, and there is a demand for jobs for those with said degrees.
Diet: The bovine’s natural diet is forage and other plant materials. This includes corn. Corn is an efficient energy source for converting that energy into beef. Now with more ethanol production (green), the distillers byproduct is an even better feed source. Plus, cattle simply love it because it tastes good. The feedlot operator pays big bucks to have the services of a nutritionist who does literally the same thing to ensure a healthy diet for the cattle as your dietician does in the city for you. There is one difference, however, cattle nutrition is geared toward maximizing weight gain in a short time, whereas your diet is to prevent weight gain. But let’s be real here, if the cattle don’t gain weight, there is no beef. So if that’s the case, we need to produce the beef as efficiently as possible because aside from you vegans or other types of non-meat eaters (which is fine—that’s your choice), there’s a lot of demand for it worldwide and a lot of mouths to feed. Also, the producer is in it to make money to continue the business, just like your supermarket in the city, or the Foot Locker who sells you your Nike Jordan’s-they want to make money and will take whatever measures necessary to improve their efficiency.
Torture: I can honestly say that I have been in livestock facilities that are cleaner than the way I have seen some people live in their house. There are some households in this country that are just plain gross. A true livestock producer will ensure clean facilities and comfort of the animals. Yes, some livestock stands outdoors their entire life. They were built to do so. There is a reason you don’t see cattle in a climate controlled, air conditioned environment. Refer to my comments on disease above if you don’t know why. However, for cases of extreme heat, feeding operations spend thousands of dollars for cooling systems (water sprinklers) to keep cattle cool. Yep, that makes mud, too. When it comes time for slaughter, much research and investment dollars into research have been spent to ensure that the animals suffer as little as possible, if at all when the slaughter process begins. Yep, it’s inflicting death on the animals to recover the beef. If left in the “wild” let’s say, do you think these animals will die a peaceful, painless death if left to disease and predators? If you think so, you are horribly wrong. Watch a nature show as a cheetah kills a wildebeest and tell me if you think that is how livestock should be left to live (and die).
What I have described here is merely the tip of the iceberg. Now, like the article mentions, if you want more specifics from firsthand producers, do what the article requests and connect with a farmer either via social media or better yet, in person where you can look them in the eye, shake their hand, and at least have an appreciation for what they do even if you disagree with it. Just because there are things people do in this world that you disagree with, doesn’t make them bad people, or what they do bad.
Feedlots are poorly run and the animals are all but tortured by being fed grains and at one point animals (Mad Cow Disease fun). Feedlots are factories nothing more. They are creating Frankencows by the millions and pushing prices up so high that the meat section of the supermarket tells the tale. Feedlots are poison and need to be shut down. Animals live in their own filth and mud. I do not buy ANY meat from any supermarket because of the way Tyson and Cargil torture animals. I buy from a local farmer who sells his meat through Grasshopper. His cows are in fields of grass on a sustainable farm. We need to return to the old way of doing things, kids weren't growing boobs at age 10 because of chemicals and hormones they use to make the cows grow like weeds.
Cattle have been grain fed for decades due to advances in nutrition and performance. I grew up feeding cattle, my family still feeds cattle, and I work with producers every day. Your fantasy about factory farms torturing animals is what is misinformed. You can't believe every you tube video you see. Your comments prove the point of people needing get acquainted with producers. How can you call me a liar when I work in that industry that has just begun to get the truth out there (our own fault we didn't start sooner.) And by the way, 10 your kids growing boobs is a direct result of sitting on their rear end playing video games, watching too much TV, and eating hot pockets like there is no tomorrow. Come on out here to rural America where young people learn to work hard and have responsibility at an early age, and the reason they have boobs at a young age is because they are buff with solid muscle, and do more work by 9 am any given day than most people accomplish all day, sometimes all week. First, antibiotics =/= vaccines. That by itself undermines Been There by illustrating a lack of simple knowledge that is taught in elementary school.
Second, the "10 kids growing boobs" argument is blaoney, because it ignores the large increase in dietary phytoestrogens that are passed on through CAFO cattle and their GMO soy feed. They are also passed on through the over-proliferation of GMO soy in processed foods. The hormone imbalance that results causes that and other health problems. Not to mention the pesticide factory that GMOs cerate in GI tracts of both cattle and human. BTW, GMO-fed dairy cows screw up the milk as well.
Third, the majority of cattle-borne pathogens are due to CAFO operations being so unsanitary. Cattle were never meant to be fed in feedlots; they are grazers. CAFO operations are not better for the beef quality–it is just cheaper and more convenient for the growers.
CAFO beef is vastly inferior to GFGF beef, and GMO-fed cattle is vastly inferior to organic cattle.
Sorry, but Been There is missing a lot of animal science and how it is and should be done. So says this guy, whose family has been farming in this nation since the 1830s and in the Old Country in Prussia and the Netherlands before that.

Well Mr. Tannim, your first sentence is wrong. Look up the definition of vaccine and that of antibiotic. For someone who has been in the business so long, you would think you would have a better understanding of the terms and what they do.
To quote Wikipedia:

Conclusion: Vaccine DOES NOT equal Antibiotics.
And, Mr. Tannim and all of those painting GM products with a broad brush, I suggest you look at the journal articles cited in the summary information below....that being from an animal scientist from a University in the Midwest. Take a look:

A: We have assessed feeding of GMO grain and grain residue to beef cattle in a few studies that are available online. These are attached as journal articles. To answer your question, the GMO grain and stalks appear to be nutritionally equivalent. It is important that any comparisons are made to a hybrid that has the same genetic background except for the GMO traits.
Therefore, with the GMO that are available today, these only have agronomic (albeit important) postives or advantages. There is no effect on cattle or end use. If specific GMO are developed with nutritionally enhanced traits, then that could change. That is not available today, though. There are no cons in terms of crop or livestock production. The cons would all be consumer perception.

I've got more, Mr. tannim and any others out there that need some help....... You want animal science? You got it! Do a quick google search of various university animal science studies both on feeding GMO feed ingredients (see my above post that directs you to some journals of animal science publications as a result of various studies), and while I won't argue that grass fed beef does have its place and has merit to it, I can find studies that show 1) grass fed beef is lower in tenderness and acceptability by the general public, and to even quote one study "......grass fed beef producers in this niche market know this and are responding by genetic selection." GASP genetic selection, I repeat, genetic selection... among grass fed feeders in order to combat less desirable meat as indicated by the consumer. Again, I have nothing against grass fed, but you want scientific facts, so here they are. 2) myth....grass fed is greener for society than corn fed in terms of carbon footprint. Well, let's see....."Methane, an implicated greenhouse gas, accounts for a 3 to 12% loss of feed gross energy in cattle. This loss is greatest for cattle consuming forage-based diets and decreases with increasing amounts of concentrate included in the diet. A quick search on methane.......... explains that replacement of forage with dried distillers grains reduces ruminal methane production." 3) some say natural is better......Hmmmmm. "Media reports and activist rhetoric would lead beef consumers to believe that the use of antibiotics and antimicrobials can spur the development of resistance genes in humans making it more difficult to fight human illnesses. Several layers of protection are in place today in the beef industry that gives us a safe food supply."
All these things quoted are from ONE university study summary among many others out there.
Oh and buy the way again, you need to go back and review your economic law of supply and demand, if you even had such a thing in your education. If producers are increasing supply, that will not be the cause of prices going up as you imply. Supplies of beef are on a general increase, yes, due to efficiency of feeding and weight gain in cattle. But you forgot that demand is also out there, and the supply is being gobbled up faster than it can be produced. Countries like China are getting a taste of our way of life, and their appetite for proteins (meat) and sugar are increasing sharply, just as one example.
Yes and heart disease and diabetes are rising in China as a direct result of adopting the American diet. Forget all the emotional BS arguments littering this and numerous other threads, as well as all the oversimplification of the issues involved in nutrition, genetic modification, etc. Review the science of Caldwell B. Esslestein Jr., MD and T. Colin Cambell, PhD. No emotion, simply 2 scientists arriving at the same conclusions working from the clinical and research directions. You'll probably dismiss my comments and imply I am lacking in intelligence, but at least take a few minutes to check out their findings and keep an open mind. These are not crackpots, there science is sound and supported. Hopefully, a few people will take a look at their work with an open mind, but for all the others...bash away.

Since you apparently are unable to address my request for 'clarification' about grains, I will address it for you. Here is your very brief lesson in Plant Science 101 for this morning:
You state that cattle won't eat "grains". By this, I assume you are referring to corn, but since you made it plural, you must be including other things, as well. Oats? Wheat? These are common 'grains', so I will assume these are also on your "list" of things bovines won't eat. Corn, wheat, oats, rice, barley, and rye all fall into a category known as "cereal" grains. You should recognize most of these, as they are the 'grains' that are commonly used to make bread and breakfast cereals, as well as being the "staple" foods in many parts of the world. There's a funny thing about 'cereal grains' that you may find bothersome – they are all grasses. Just like fescue, orchardgrass, timothy, and any number of other forage plants are grasses. "Grains" happen to be somewhat unique because they store more starch in their seeds than other grasses do. Lesson over.
Now, let's assume that "grains" are just the seeds of the plants. By your logic, since cattle won't eat "grains", they wouldn't eat the seeds of the fescue, orchardgrass, timothy, and whatever else they happened to be munching on at the time. Really? I know that I have personally seen many a bovine go through a pasture and carefully nip the seed head off of a 'grass' stem and spit it out before continuing to eat only the stem and the leaf – well, not really. I'm sure that you have seen this, though. If not, go look for it the next time you see cattle grazing in a pasture. Take a lunch with you, though, and you better take a supper, too, because you're going to be there a long time.
And, while we're at it, did you know that cattle also browse on trees? No? Well, welcome to reality, sir. Maybe you've learned something today, so you won't be as "ill-informed". (Note: They won't eat all trees, just like they won't eat all grass.)

Fact in Cattle nutrition 101: Cattle will eat any balanced ration you put in front of them. I have seen operations that include things like factory reject hamburger buns (yes bread) from a nearby Wonder factory that have been healthy and gained well. Not moldy, mind you, but just under standards for them to send it out their door to supermarkets. Another I have seen has fed reject Wrigley chewing gum as part of their ration. I stress as PART of the ration of normal roughage and protein supplement and grain.
You know it's funny. You say the won't eat grain (I assume you mean corn). Yet of all the cattle I have personally fed and my family continues to feed, they still seem to come to the bunk ready to eat when the feed is delivered to them every day, and they lick the bunk clean every time.

They WILL eat corn/buns/gum/garbage, just like a baby will eat ice cream all day if you feed it to them. That doesn't mean that they should eat it.
Their bodies are built for a diet that has very little diversity and they are naturally lean animals. When they are fed fatty unhealthy foods you get fatty unhealthy meat. It is not complicated. Bovine have evolved to have a diet entirely of pasture. Fatty grains such as corn and soybeans were not a part of this evolution and are not good for the animal.
Well, Thegoodman, you seem to have it all figured out. You must have a degree in animal (particularly cattle) nutrition. (I highly doubt it.)
I encourage you to read Ryan's post further up that he posted today to answer some questions about feeding corn. And at the risk of repeating information I put in some posts earlier, do yourself a favor and look up various studies by Universities such as Iowa State, Kansas State, Missouri, and others about grass fed vs. corn fed. Grass fed has its place, but by and large, the desirable choice dictated by the CONSUMER is corn fed. That is the common theme you will find in those studies. Don't take my word for it....seriously, go look it up! Oh, and while you're at it, those same universities also have multiple studies of feeding GM ingredients (not just corn, but also forage) vs non-GM, and they ALL come up with the same conclusion.....GM vs non-GM results in NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER in the health of the animal, quality of meat produced, weight gain, and on and on. In fact some of them go so far as to say the only negative thing about GM feed ingredients is the FALSE, negative perception of the public due to the interest groups such as HSUS and PETA. Go to those schools websites, read several studies, then come back here and post your findings.

I used to own a horse. I know it's not related to a cow but I'm assuming they'd eat the same things. They would eat themselves to death in a grain field if given the chance. Mine did.
All of this discussion and concern about eating dead cows can be easily solved. Eat them while they are alive. They will taste better if you cut off a slab and put it directly on the grill.
Grain fed feedlot beef is worthless, period. Grass fed and finished beef is superior in every possible way and when done correctly is also good for the environment around them.

Awww, so the hater is unveiled. You don't like vegans. I understand why you are giving me such a hard time now. I have been a vegan for just 5 months. I am a vegan for several reasons, the most important being that it is much much healthier than the latter. A well balanced vegan diet decreases your chances of getting any of the numerous afflictions that plague our country including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and countless other things. The second reason is that I do not trust the meat industries in our country. The meat produced today is less healthy than 30 years ago due to fat content, hormones, antibiotics, e.coli, etc. The third is that I do not like contributing to the outrageously inefficient industrial farming process that gets meat on our plates. The amount of fossil fuels wasted on meat production is shameful and I want no part in it. Those are the reasons. I enjoy the taste of meat. I have no qualms over an animal losing its life to feed us. I made a red wine braised beef short ribs 7 months ago and it was delicious.
I said the grain fed beef that the supplier gives to his community is subpar because countless scientific studies have shown grain fed beef to be inferior to grass fed beef, as far as nutrition is concerned. Taste is completely objective and I am sure many people prefer the fat content of grain fed beef. People also love to eat 2000 calories and zero nutrition from McDonalds, that doesn't mean its good for them.
I think food is the vehicle to provide our body with the things it needs to live a long healthy life. Many Americans think food is only there to provide our taste buds with pleasure. This is why our country is fat, out of shape, and in terrible health. Suppliers like the mentioned ohio farmer are as guilty as the consumer for choosing taste over health, unfortunately we are all paying for it.

My husband and I bought a 16,000 acre ranch in Arizona, upon my husband's retirement from investment banking. We run 200+ cattle on the ranch and have learned in the past 9 years about ranching, range management, the weather and it's effect on our operations, and so much more! Trust me, we now know that cattle ranchers (not feedlots) are dependent on the health of their rangelands to sustain their own livelihood. If they allow overgrazing or if the rains don't come, they have to sell their cattle, and they have no income the following year. Cattle ranching is a long term lifestyle that requires more hands on management than most people realize.
Thanks for sharing Beau. There's always more than one way to get the job done. It's amazing how much the landscape and environment change from one end of this country to the other. Those changes dictate how farms and ranches are managed, but that is a common theme we all share. We have to take care of our environment first, and only then will it take care of us.
We are also constanrly learning more about managing our environment and farming/ranching in a more sustainable way. Over the years we have learned to study the symbiotic relationships between the soils, plants and mammals which graze and brows on the foliage, the result has been the development of Holistic Management on range lands thrughout the world, resulting in improved grass cover, better water cycles and the return of much of the native wildlife, while improving production.
I have done much research on this subject including visiting many fantastic local farmers who do it right in my community. I am also acquainted with the director of the farmland preservation program in my area.
Lets be real this piece is pure propaganda. Had this been from a family farmer I would understand, but coming from the owner of the second biggest feedlot in the country? This is big business and this guy is protecting himself and a few others. Farmers have been forced, because of agribusiness to use inhumane,unhealthy, BUT economically efficient practices.
GMOs, environmental degradation, dirty air/water, global warming, human health, antibiotics, hormones, and the suffering of millions of animals is not something one article can gloss over. If this article satisfies your concerns I fear for the future of this world.

I am actually a student and part of a farming family, not an owner of any feedlot. You are right about the fact that in no way can this post satisfy curiosity about all farming practices. That's why I chose to point out the need for better communication from both sides. There's more to farming than a hand full of posts could ever cover. I am living and managing in the UK at present, there are several very good initiatives in place, this past weekend was "Open farm Sunday" where an increasing number of farmers open their farms for the day and give tours of their farms to visitors from the cities, as well as informative tours and talks, country style entertainment is provided to make for an entertaining day out, covered by a small entry fee. We also had the national BBQ championships two weeks ago, with tours and and education centre on site, and we host regular school tours throughout the summer.

Across the U.S. we have programs called Ag In The Classroom to introduce agriculture to students so they may begin learning about agriculture and food at an early age. We met 2 people who own ranches in CA on vacation. I was talking with one of them, and she said that if you ever visited a slaughterhouse you would likely never eat meat again. Hmmmm.....and this comment is from a rancher!

One of the biggest contributing factors to the entire food "debate" – regardless of what is being discussed – has been the movement of our society from an agricultural/subsistence culture to an urban/city setting. A hundred years ago, there was a considerably larger portion of the U.S. population that "farmed", even if it was only growing their own vegetable garden. Those with a garden would have 'canned' most of their "excess" produce to preserve it, so that it could be safely eaten long after the growing season was over. (There would have been little electricity available in large portions of the U.S., so freezing would have been almost unknown in the average home.) It was quite common for them to raise and slaughter their own "meat", whatever that would have been. In addition to this – and even if they didn't raise their own meat animals – many people hunted for wild game. This wasnt' done to get a "trophy" to hang on the wall; this was done to either provide meat or to supplement the other meat that was available. These people – men, women, boys and girls – learned how to slaughter and butcher their own meat, whether it was livestock or wild game. To these people, seeing and even taking part in the slaughter of an animal would have been a 'routine' occurrence, even though it would have happened infrequently. The "urbanization" of most of our populace has removed people from this setting and from these experiences. It is reasonable to state that over half of the U.S. population is at least two generations, if not more, removed from this process.
I say all this to make this point – if one "grew up" in a setting where providing your own meat was common, there would not be too much that would be 'disturbing' in a slaughterhouse. If, however, one has never experienced firsthand what happens when an animal is slaughtered, it could be a difficult experience – that is not to say that it is bad, it's just to say that it's very different than what the majority of Americans have experienced before.

I have and I do. It's no big deal when one understands that meat has to be processed from the animal to the plate, be it covered in fur, feather, or fin.

I grew up in Texas...been to many farms and a couple of slaughterhouses. Believe me when I tell you that the animals are mistreated. They're beaten, whipped, chained and dragged to the chute. Then an airhammer smacks them in the skull, usually, but not always, killing them. However, killed or just stunned, they are hung up by a chain, bled dry, skinned, and processed. Thousand of times a day, every day. So you can take your "I must eat meat" and your "mmmm...subway" comment and stick em straight up your rectum. If you think about what you're eating, how it got there, and have even a small amount of soul, you stop.

Mike, I grew up in Wisconsin and have been to many farms. None of which included the things that you mentioned in your post. The rational part of me knows that some places abuse animals and some places don't. My solution is to buy from sources I know that are doing it right.
And even though you seem to think you're more moral than I am just because you don't eat meat; I'll point out that there may be any number of other "moral" issues that I choose to make a priority in my life which you don't. How could either of us think we're better than the other for a single choice?

This article is PR junk. I read it hoping to get some insight into beef production since I do eat it and care a great deal about where my food comes from. I value and respect the people who produce the food I eat but please don't waste my time with useless fluff pieces like this. Blah blah, good people, blah blah a couple of bad apples. Come on, let us know what you're feeding them, how they're treated, processed, sold and shipped. We all know the cattle is drawing the short straw here, no need to avoid the details entirely.

Humans are omnivores, needing the nutrients supplied by meat for optimum vitality. Vitamin B-12 is one that helps keep heart and mind strong, especially as we get older. You need not take our word for it but check the many years worth of studies on the subject and let truth replace opinion.

Hey – I know very little about farming. I was in 4-H as a kid (raised pigs and auctioned them, shot riflery and archery, etc) but work in a different field currently.
I was just surprised at the percent of people who voted "I am a farmer". Sheesh relax.
Even the "kindest" rancher of beef cattle brands with hot iron, castrates, dehorns without pain relief. Even the "kindest" rancher sends those animals for whom he "does not accept cruel treatment" on sometimes days-long trips via crowded cattle truck to shadeless feedlots. There his treasured animals will be fed food inappropriate for their digestive systems and be made to stand on mountains of their own gloppy waste, crowded together with acres (in some cases square miles) of equally tortured animals. From there, these beloved bovines will be trucked to assembly-line slaughterhouses, where cows will be - every single day, and many times a day at every single slaughterhouse - inadequately stunned and peeled alive, have legs cut off while alive, be eviscerated while alive.
This is not "the media" version of things. It is the truth.

Since you won't – and can't – defend your statements, I'll add to my previous comment. What you posted is the most blatant lie in this entire string of responses. After stunning, the animals are bled. Both carotid arteries and both jugular veins are severed, so that the blood is removed from the body very quickly – and, remember, the animals are "only" unconscious, right? They bleed to death in a matter of several seconds. The skinning operation doesn't even start until the bleeding operation is finished. How many animals do you know are still alive after having all of their blood removed?

I, too, have been in slaughterhouses many times – including the largest slaughterhouses in this country. Not only that, I have PERSONALLY taken part – a very active part, if you know what I mean – in the slaughter of dozens (and that doesn't stop at "2") of animals.
You talk about 'fear' – there is undoubtedly some level of anxiety – just as there would be if somebody put you, or any animal, in a completely unfamiliar setting. But on the subject of animals: Do you have pets? Do you ever take them to the vet? Are there other animals around when you go the vet? Are your animals "in sight" of these other animals? In "hearing distance"? Are the other animals larger than your animals? Or more 'vocal' (screaming, I guess you would say)? Do you think either your pets or the others are anxious? My daughter has a cat who looks life a puffball when taken to the vet, because she releases so much hair. Is this "inhumane"?
Suffer? Are they held in tight quarters? Sometimes. Are they mistreated? They shouldn't be, but – as we all know – there are bad apples in every lot, right? You weed them out the best you can as soon as you can.
Scream? Interesting choice of words. In all my years of dealing with multiple forms of livestock – even in a slaughter situation, I can honestly say that I have never heard one "scream". I don't know what that is. Will they 'vocalize'? Yes. They do this frequently. Scream – or do the animal equivalent – I'm thinking not, but you apparently are the "expert" here.
Know they are going to die? I doubt that rather seriously. You – as so many "anti's" do – are trying to attribute human reasoning and emotions to animals who – quite simply – aren't capable of that.
You claim that I'm using "BS". Really? You go back to specific posts I made just above here – which I assume are the ones you are referring to – any you show me anything in those posts that is BS. (I'm not going to hold my breath.) You've "been" in a slaughterhouse, good for you. Have you ever actually WATCHED the entire slaughter operation to see what happens? If you have, you know full well that nothing I posted was BS – unless you were watching kosher or halal slaughter, which is an entirely different thing.
Now – this ought to really set you off: It doesn't bother me one bit to cut carotids and jugulars, or aortas, in the case of hogs. You can't eat them while they're alive, and making them dead the quickest and most painless way possible is the right thing to do. I eat meat, and that's the only way to get it to the table.

I suggest you start with Jonathan Safran Foer's _Eating Animals-_. It's written in plain, conversational English that even the most rock headed and unintelligent can understand. There are better books on the subject, but I believe they would be too advanced for you.

You are correct about one thing, though – some of us "trolls" don't read books – we've actually "been there and done that". Never – ever – in your entire life, no matter what you do, will you find a 'book' that takes the place of firsthand experience. There's your "truth".
Since you brought up the subject of books, I have a question for you . . .
If I read a nice book telling me all about how the Confederate States of America won the Civil War, would I then be an 'expert' on the subject? Would I be "highly knowledgeable"? Wouldn't I make a great history teacher, if that was my sole source of information on the subject?

I am a vegan, however, protecting farm animals is a fool's endeavor. Farm animals are raised to be eaten, it is their purpose in life. If cows were not raised for beef, there would be few cows on this earth. Our need for their flesh actually benefits their species a great deal. There are a million problems in this world, preserving the life of farm animals should be near the bottom of your to-do list.

Vegan diets are more healthy than non-vegan diets. That is a fact based on several well performed medical studies. Based on that information, I owe it to my loved ones to be a vegan.

What is stupid about what I said? Can you really argue against the success of the species for cows/pigs/chickens? The same goes for corn and soybeans. It may be callous, but it is not stupid.
I love animals and I do not wish undue harm on any living thing. That being said, an animal whose purpose in life is to provide food for a different animal must die. If the entire planet became vegans, many livestock we raise today would eventually perish from this earth. They have no place in nature due to breeding out traits of individuality and survival and breeding in traits of domestication and dependence on owners. Pigs would make it, but they typically breed with the local boar population to produce a feral pig that is a very successful invasive species.
I get frustrated with vegans and PETA activists that equate animal feels with human ones. A cow is not capable of complex thought. They certainly experience a range of emotions but not on the level that a human does. To worry about a cow's suffering is like a cow worrying about the suffering of a fly that falls under its hoof. It is possible to kill and eat things humanely.

Well from my perspective (I eat meat, but not that often) there are a certain subset of comments that irritate me. There are the people who spout half-truths and misinformation.
The other group of comments I don't like are people that somehow think they're better than others because they choose not to consume meat. I respect anyone's choice to not eat meat. But there may be other "moral" causes that I choose to make a priority in my life that any random vegan may not. One particular decision in my life doesn't make me better than someone who doesn't value that particular cause.
A nonviolent life IS better than a violent one.
A case in point, Manny. You've chosen this single cause as the most important. That's wonderful. But you're not better than others because of it. I don't think buying a quarter of beef from my local farmer every year or so qualifies as a violent life.

Perhaps an article about how meat gets to our table could at least MENTION the slaughterhouse part? Perhaps he could list the drugs that are fed to cattle to keep them healthy enough to make it to market. Many folks here are freaking out about corn being genetically modified.. All corn has been genetically modified. The big ears of corn we see in the store only exist because of genetic modification. Altering the genetics of something doesn't make it evil or bad :/ without that modification there would be extreme world hunger.

@Nonny...oh, please do some research before posting such nonsense! You are confusing selective breeding and seed selection with genetic modification. GM foods are designed - not bred or selected. Genetic material from one organism is combined in the lab with the genetic material from another (in the case of corn, for instance, a bacterium that destroys the digestive track of cararpillars was inserted into the germ of corn, creating a strain of corn with built-in - but non-selective - insecticide). If you have no understanding of how it works, you will naturally have no understanding of the reasons intelligent people oppose the practice.

Also, they provide things like thiamine that we have a hard time getting from plants. Once upon a time, not that long ago, we didn't have a global food market. Not all the plants that would grow in an area could provide all the nutrients people actually need. Vegetarians might talk a good game about beans and rice, but without B12 supplements and a few others, you become very malnourished very quickly from not eating meat. This is a big reason that vegetarianism (and other veg diets) are not recommended for children under a certain age.

This website, which is supposedly started by real farm wives, everyday people like "Ryan" here, who want to enlighten the consumer about modern agricultural practices. The domain is owned by Osborn Barr Communications, a PR company that has been on the payroll of Monsanto. Don't be fooled. Monsanto and others are spending a lot of money, in the range of $60 million, to make you believe that what they are doing is A-OK. If you want to do the research, and come to the conclusion that corn and beef fed cows, and genetically altered produce is okay for human consumption, by all means feel free. But don't fall for this weak argument by a corporate schill posing as a farmer.

Sarah, I do not find it a conflict that a company that has done PR for many ag firms helped organize a vehicle for farmers to get a message out. These women are REAL farmers telling REAL stories. For someone to create a domain for them to use isn't unreasonable. For you to minimize this effort simply because you say Monsanto has done business with a PR firm....well, I think that's unfair. Ryan's post talks about how farmers haven't been communicating as much as we should. That's partly because, although we're very comfortable working on our farms, we are less comfortable and knowledgeable about communicating outside of that comfort zone. I hope you and others can actually read these stories and see that mostly farmers are real, hardworking people on life's journey who are imperfect but learning just like everyone else.

They keep telling us to "get to know your farmer"... Well I have – Several "beef" ranchers, a few chicken farmers and one 2 families that grow pigs. I STILL don't like what I see and know! How many times makes it enough for them to know that you know... And still don't approve of their practices?
From the manipulation of the land to the mutilation of the animals – None of it is ethical! We don't "need" to continue these harmful practices in order to feed ourselves. A plant based diet is the direction that we should be going in: Compassionate, sustainable and better for human health.
So let's just objectively run a bit of math. You want to go vegan globally. Ok, what diet or mix do you think an American vegan will want to eat? Typically, fresh fruits and veggies that grow in limited bands of soil and space. Now these bands of soil and space are in heavy competition with other water uses. Hmmmm.
So, we have 3 billion new middle class citizens coming globally by 2030 (well underway). The FIRST thing they and their governments encourage is to start consuming more meat and dairy for health. Hmmm.
Now we have people eating food as a conveniance and we have the perishability factor of the common vegan diet. So the more you are "on the go" as a family the harder to play vegan. The more you eat out, the harder. Assume you convert quick casual and quick serve to vegan. You massively increase post harvest loss which is about the most dramatic way to destroy sustainability. Hmmmm.
It isn't a scalable or workable model. It exists only in idealistic Norman Rockwell pictures. Unfortunately, too many people simply have never seen modern agriculture so they have these warped and peverted pictures of it. AND, they have idealistic images of fresh, local, organic. You do realize your organic produce is likely covered in human poop right? Or it takes so much more land and water per calorie than beef, right? (So totally unsustainable if you could grow it on the same land).
Incorrect. If you want a wholly vegan population variety of fruits and vegetables will be essential. Much of that variety grows in a narrow band of soil, moisture, and temperature considerations. This results in a great deal of competition for water and inability to scale production to meet your needs. So you can't realistically meet demand.
Then you have huge net increases in inputs and a dramatic decrease in sustainability. Seems counter-intuitive until you run out the numbers. You lose in logistics and post harvest loss (perishability issues) as well as inventory control so your net impact on the environment is far greater actually. If energy costs came down and grain stayed high, it would balance. That is unlikely.
Don't forget that food has become a service and an issue of speed. This essentially wrecks havoc on the traditional vegan as better model because you can't convert QSR or quick casuals without huge impacts on profitability or pricing or post harvest loss (money or sustainability). Plus the conversion cost would be thru the roof much like converting from gas to natural gas for automobiles.
You have to take the problem all the way thru!

If you think the majority of the American population is going to give up meat for a plant-based diet you're a fool. And it will be one thousand times harder to get China to do the same.
I love chicken, pork, beef, eggs, milk, cheese & my kids do too. Why should everyone go to all plant foods? The protein is not there, as well as many other nutrients. Eat what you want, I don't have time to spend all day in the kitchen trying to mix my veggies well enough to get my nutritional needs met.
You need to do a bit more research on protein if you think that you can't get enough eating a plant based diet.
wow .. if anybody here believes you need to eat meat to get enough protein, they are very uneducated and truly hopeless. Any registered dietician in north america will tell you that even vegetarians have at least twice the protein a human body actually needs. Meat eaters have up to 4 times what they need. I am not a vegan or vegetarian, but I do eat less meat because it has been proven time and time again a diet which consisting of too much meat will cause heart disease, cholesterol, obesity, increased risk of stroke, the list goes on. It is clear people here do not educate themselves on how to look after themselves. Anybody who hasn't lived under a rock knows today's cows have never even seen a blade of grass. They are pumped full of antibiotics (no normal animal could survive the disgusting conditions of a factory farm without them) and hormones, and contaminated grain. People still wonder why they get obese and end up with cancer. Truthfully, if you can eat all that junk, you should be ready to face the consequences. (I keep my meat to a minimum and try to always buy organic.. if you cant afford organic, maybe you would rather spend the money on medical bills and cancer treatments.. because that`s part of the package)
With all due respect then, those aren't your farmers are they? If you're vegan, get to know YOUR FARMER – those that grow what you eat. What a nonsense article this is. Nowhere do they mention that these cows are being fed corn and how this is NOT a part of their natural diet. They also use beef bi-products in their feed as well. Now days our cattle are cannibals. They do this to cut down on costs.
This practice and cutting corners to save money is EXACTLY why we're getting sick with flesh eating bacteria and E coli. Spinal fluids have been proven over and over again to be causing these illnesses but we STILL continue to use these sick unethical methods of feeding.

First, the term was created to promote margin in what otherwise was a flat sector of retail grocery: fruit and vegs. You simply pay more for organic. Hence, scaring you to irrationally pay more was what created the term.
Now, let's debunk the corn vs grass myth. We improve crops and we improve cows. You simply are unlikely to accept "natural" fruits, vegetables and grains as they existed say even 100 years ago. The berries, the corn, the pulses, the tubers, the everything would simply look totally unappetizing. Your diet bet you a Nebraska steak dinner is a function of very careful selection. We can talk about genetic versus conventional selection but point is we select what works and creates great product.
HENCE. . . corn over grass. More meat per lb of input. Less land being used. Less water being used. Less carbon emissions (total and per cow methane production). Less disease. Less instances per serving of food safety issues. Less transportation and foreign oil costs (closer to production and market). Grown where there is less competition for water. Overall, dramatically improved sustainability and taste. ALL you have is this vague notion of "natural" and let me tell ya. . . natural food. . . well it doesn't look good, taste good, or do good for the environment. Nice try though!
Sorry, having keynoted global food safety conferences the facts are you are far more likely to get a serious food borne illness from organic produce than beef. I remember a famous lawyer who sues everyone after food outbreaks Bill Marler from the MarlerClark law firm went to a cattleman association meeting and told the beef industry they cleaned up their act and used to account for 75% (I think that is right) of his income and now represent under 10%. The growth. . . leafy green veggies.
I can give you specific reported numbers for the US. You have to look at it not in terms of total cases (we eat more protein). But on number of servings per incident. Then look at total number of hospital borne illnesses because frankly just getting diareha from norovirus (most common foodborne illness often mistaken for a nonsense term stomach flu) isn't what ultimately matters most.
The issue is simple. Manure is an organic fertilizer. Animals enter fields even if you have perfect manure compliance. Human workers often defecate where they work because the toilets are too far away and they are incentivised based on production. In short, e. coli just happens. The key is the kill steps. You kill e.coli with heat, radiation, acidified sodium chlorate (think lemon juice and salt folks the words sound scary if you have no idea what they mean), etc. You don't and can't perform an easy kill step on leafy green vegetables. You can't wash away the most dangerous pathogens especially non enveloped viruses. Raw will always be more dangerous even if nutrient dense. Even with an Ecolab wash the kill rates are lower. Then you wash most vegetables in huge vats so if you have contaminated heads of lettuce the water acts as a conduit to contaminating much larger amounts. But who wants to eat dirt???? It is a tradeoff. Conventional and especially GMO will always be safer to eat because they allow you to bypass some of the practices most responsible for these hospitalizations and renal failures.
Look, I don't care if cows are eating corn or other cows or Bengal Tigers, so long as I can order a burger at a decent price.

I love your comment, because it is honest. Many people try to justify how eating meat isn't wrong or harmful to animals, the environment, and our health. You just put it right out there. The practice of feeding grains to meat animals wrecks the fatty acid content of the meat, causing an abundance of inflammatory omega-6's, already grossly overrepresented in the American diet, and a dearth of omega-3's, already virtually absent from said diet.
That's just one problem with feeding livestock grains. All the land and water used is, at this rate, unsustainable. We are destroying our world for the sake of $1 cheeseburgers at McDonalds. I have no faith left in humanity.

Reality check. You essentially are arguing the nutrient quality of the beef is incrementally worse. Ok, let's talk about things that impact human health by order of magnitude. It is eat less and sweat more. Simple stuff. Only when you optimize your total diet and exercise and caloric intake does this argument make an iota of difference. Great article as a farmer/ rancher I take pride in caring for animal just like those of you in towns / cities do for your pets. Your cattle graze on pastures for about 8 months then they graze corn stalks picking up the corn / corn plant left behind from harvesting of the crop. We supplement them with vitamins and minerals all year round in hopes of maintaining them in a healthy productive body condition. Beef production in the united states provide the highest quality,lowest cost protein source that you can find anywhere in the world.
So many people spout garbage science that is akin to reading the back of a bottle of ginko bilboa. It just isn't real. You have to know reality to have any sort of valid point of view. If you never have seen modern agriculture, chances are you have the right to an opinion (everyone does) but little chance of having a valid opinion.
Now in fairness, beef never was or is the lowest cost protein, though in America the cost of producting beef is lower than elsewhere.
Grass fed beef has issues folks often overlook. More land. More water. More disease. More food safety issues (yup run the stats per serving. We can talk why later). It has more footprint, more cost and is a whole lot less "green" thank folks think just by looking at it. It also tasts worse. You pay good money for bad beef? Why? Beef must be natural but what about your latte? The cream is natural by the same definition? See, it all comes down to what YOU value most in your diet versus what you THINK someone else should value less.
People get hung up on the concept of natural. Well "natural corn" (you know the stuff without selection) you wouldn't eat. Really. We improve crops and cows and production, taste, lower inputs and generally are more sustainable. Want to talk green? Talk MODERN farming.

There are issues with agriculture on a localized basis. Water can be in competition. That is why American beef is more sustainable. We simply have more water and land to essentially export in the form of high quality beef.

Now if you are a personal trainer with an optimized diet or a professional athelete. . . then maybe. . . . When did farmerrs become "the bad guy"? Historically, farming taught work ethic, dependence on neighbors in hard times, independence when you can do it yourself, a long term view (you are passing down the farm), etc. It represented the best of the American character. No, actually it isn't. Exponential growth implies that our population is increasing at an increasing rate. That kind of growth curve has a J-shape when plotted on a graph. In contrast, our population is increasing at a decreasing rate. That's logistic growth and it has an S-shape when plotted out. The UN Population Division expects it to level out and reach its maximum a little past half way through this century at about 9 billion. Now, in my opinion, 9 billion is still way too many people for this planet to sustain, but it is a very different situation that exponential growth.
Food 2040 (USDA and USGC) and any FAO or UN report will counter. Growth is steady but steady growth on an increasing base is what generates the need for double the food production in somewhere between 30 and 40 years (with much of it coming as we go versus mysteriously being needed at the end of the cycle of course).
This also leads to the need to move, process, manufacture etc. That requires deep investment unless you are optimized like the American farmer to produce more with less (grains, meat, and CPG shelf ready foods). We just havve the advantage of land, water and climate.
On population, the dramatic growth is tied to countries with high birth rates in Asia (total growth) and Africa (incremental growth). This results in a need to export what will be far more stable (processed food simply transports and can deal with the long supplychain). These countries do not have the land, water or soil to be self sufficient. They need to import water, land and low cost via purchasing food produced in modern agricultural countries. Just the facts.
Rice is far less water intensive, as are most crops. Corn is one of the thirstiest crops, but provides less food per acre than many other crops.
Having helped many emerging countries move to a balanced crop plan, I just don't know what to say to such a statement. Sometimes people get confused in the amount of water that is uptook by a plant versus what is required to be in the soild to effectuate the uptake. That can skew a common understanding. Yield per unit of water supply is what the FAO uses. You just don't win with rice. Look at average water usage in inches per day. Then you also have that most corn is rainfed which has little impact. Most rice is not wholly.
gargle has a good point. We're drying up because our fresh water supply is not sustainable.
Look at studies on why we are drying up water usage done by neutral parties with no stake in the game be they IBM, Accenture, McKinnsey, World Economic Forum, etc. The usage of water is certainly more skewed to agriculture than say any other use, but the draw from aquifers is tied more to narrow classes of crops which would surprise you are specialty fruits and veggies vs cash crops. Now that varies by location certainly. But you don't solve the problem on cash crops (North America focused discussion) as much as you would with other subsectors and industrial uses.
I would argue it's not the fact that we're growing corn that's bad. It's WHERE we're growing the corn. To use our water in the best way we need to choose to grow crops that would naturally thrive in that region with the rainfall it gets. Iowa has a perfect climate for growing corn. Texas....not so much.
Generally Ally that is what is a positive point on corn. Now because corn prices are rising dramatically tied to increased global population and income wanting the benefits of protein in their diet for the first time regularly, you start to use more marginal land.
The question is what was this land otherwise producing before? Chances are it was not new farmland put into production as statistically not much of that is happening (on a percentage basis). Take a look at the water requirements for those crops and often you find corn becomes king at reducing inputs and being sustainable.
Now if you really want to create more sustainable corn, you select germplasm to reduce the height of the stalks which is material which is not consumed. Of course, that material is plowed into the Earth and reduces the need for nutrients which also take inputs to create including water. It just isn't simple.
Not true. Corn is a very water efficient plant. That is why India is moving to a corn and rice mix in the Northern provinces that are seeing less snowpack melt from the mountains. You also grow corn where there is little competition for water and it is typically rain fed versus irrigated so you have no impact on aquifers as is being misrepresented.
Now take our vegan and organic friends. Their crops grow in narrow bands of soil, water and temperature conditions. They tend to require irrigation and have enormous competition on water resources from cities etc. Think CA for example.
That is a bit simple but it starts to build the picture we can work on.

I'm sure you'll be welcomed with open arms and they'll be more than happy to give you the grand tour. Don't forget to swing by the gift shop. Factory farms produce 99% of all farmed animals raised and slaughtered in the United States. Their sole purpose is to produce the most food at the cheapest cost to us, whatever that takes. Even if you don't care about the horrific animal cruelty happening in these overcrowded factories, you should care that animal agriculture is the single largest contributor to global warming. I grew up in a farming community as well – my sister and brother-in-law own and operate a cattle farm. And it's a nice little thought to think that all of our meat comes from those lush, green pastures filled with clean, healthy cows you see dotted along the highway. But that's far from the truth.
Actually, they do Hannah. I live on a cattle farm. I live next to 3 other farms, all large producers. Some among the top producers in the country. Our cows all live in lush pastures. True, we have hard times like now with no rain here, but we provide hay and grain to supplement them. Like the article said, 97% of farming is on family owned farms. Not factory. The factory farms try to make up for what we can't produce. With growing populations, urban development buying up farm land and converting them to housing divisions, and blind misconceptions like yours, we are unable to produce enough food for the country, so the factory farmers have a market to fill in that gap. If you want them to stop, you need to work with the farmers, the majority who DO treat our animals very well and WANT to produce more food. And yes, a lot of farmers, especially those who produce food for the national market, would be more than happy to let you see their facilities. I would.
Actually Kat – Hannah is right – they don't. I used to work for Tyson in the corporate office. There's a lot that happens there (and the other big boy factory farms – where most of your meat comes from) that is strictly off limits to the public. A lot of suppliers (farmers) had to sign confidentiality agreements. Oh, and just because a farm is family owned and operated doesn't mean jack.
Well M. I too spent time there and helping the entire protein and grain industry. The key to the confidentiality agreements has FAR less to do with "hiding from the public" and far more to do with maintaining a competitive advantage on production techniques that because of volume and velocity can represent the difference in margin between two similarly situation processors. Remember, that "supplier" of say animal health and wellness inputs is the same for say JBS or Cargill Fresh Meat. Common sense requires that to be confidential. In this era of videos, no company thinks it can hide from the public. No company would try. But keeping key production techniques from a competitor (e.g. line speed, diet, temperature, processing floor configuration) is just good business!

Are these the farmers that get subsidy after subsidy for their land and expect tax dollars to pay for millions of dollars in relief programs and expensive ad campaigns ("Got Milk" and "Beef... it's what's for Dinner") not to mention the loans that they are given zero percent interest on for thirty years, and can write off all losses during that time as well? Again, a lot of misconceptions. In order for a farmer to claim hardship, they have to have lost more than 40% of their "crop" be it plant or animals. Anything less, and the government shrugs it off. Farmers don't get interest free loans. It's been about 50 years since that happened. We do get some subsidies, but only if we accept our farms to be factory farms, with outside workers and feeding our animals what they choose. The majority, the family farmers that keep their farm under their own control and receive very little help. We do get help if something very bad should happen, like in Texas where they had 5 years of drought and had to have hay shipped in from other states. The government paid for SOME of that, but not all. And why shouldn't we get some help? Those farmers are the reason you can go to the store and buy steaks and ribs for your cookouts, have eggs and bacon for breakfast, and enjoy a burger at Burger King. Without that help, you would not have food. Plant or meat. I see people go and get welfare in the city, and quit their jobs because the government is now paying for their housing, food, etc. They live off of government aid and eat better and have better things than most working people. At least when farmers get aid, we use the money to help the entire country with food, not just ourselves. People cry about food shortages and world hunger, but don't want farmers to produce food....
I'm fine with farmers producing food, since it's supposed to be their living. But, there are numerous farmers and co-ops that abuse the system, just like the welfare recipients you reference. I am neither on welfare, nor a farmer but I am paying for both of these groups to abuse my tax dollars. I know several rural communities where farmers accept food stamps because of those declared "losses" and they undervalue projected earnings – and then they file taxes claiming to have made nothing but barely covering expenses. Really? How about the capital they own with the $200k tractors? Nope – that's not earnings, it's allowed assets (just like welfare recipients who drive Cadillacs.) Save the sob story of the American farmer for another day – one in which they meet their obligations like those of us who pay more than a third of our take-home pay to taxes.
What is the one thing the American public and government wants the farmer to do? Be optimistic and produce as much as they can. This is an essential part of keeping food prices down. To earn this optimism which is critical for the economy as well as food security and our ability to supply export nutrition to the World, we pay a price. That price is a safety net.
Trouble in any government program is you build the safety net for a point in time and then the World changes. But it is incredibly difficult to muster the political will to change the law (especially one as complicated and locally driven as farmer safety nets). You see you have to pick winning and losing crops and within crops you have the rainfed farms of Iowa and then the pivot irrigated areas of the South. That creates a lot of local fighting in a Congress and keeps the kind of changes you are looking for from happening.
So farmers being darn smart and clever simply adapt to the system at hand. It leads to wonky results sometimes but that is a factor of the law and system versus the farmer's manipulation. For every story of a farmer getting more than his or her share, every farmer can tell you about someone who didn't qualify because of a silly nuance. Those stories don't get reported outside of local news.
System is old a creaky. It isn't the farmer.
@ Solo – Last time I checked, the vast majority of the money – if not every penny – that went to the beef advertising programs came from the beef checkoff fund. This money happens to be paid by the PRODUCERS, not the government. Look it up for yourself.
You are dead wrong – the lobbyists that campaign for these ads get the money directly from taxpayer funds. It's seen as a "necessity" for food production in this country. The Cattlemen's Association & Beef Producers only monitor the content and seek for reduced laws on their production standards – and, I did look it up. The wording is a huge amount of legalese and I am certain of my facts – I used to write speeches for a congressman and know these practices. If you believe all that you read on the Internet, you're their perfect audience = naive.
There's an old saying that goes something like "Everybody's entitled to their own 'facts', but not to their own truth". I don't know what "facts" you have, but something tells me you didn't find the "Beef Checkoff Fund". You might want to go back and try that again.
See if you can find the "Beef Promotion and Research Act of 1985", Solo, and then when you have the "truth", you can come back and tell us what your 'facts' are.
Neoither of you is completely wrong or right. So checkoff dollars are from producers but managed initally by both States and Feds. Some checkoff programs are mandatory and others voluntary. Some seem more like a tax. . . though on producers. . . some like a voluntary marketing payment. Key is neither impacts the non-specific commodity producing taxpayer.
Up until you start talking about matching funds for things like contributor groups such as the US Grains Council or US Meat Export Federation. Of course, the ROI for the taxpayer in these "contributions" is extremely well established and frankly if everything were that efficient in government or required the private sector to contribute half. . . .

You are probably correct in what you have stated, but Solo was not. I called him on what he posted because it's wrong. The Beef Checkoff Program requires that $1.00 be collected (yes, it is mandatory) on every head of beef that is sold in this country, every time it is sold, with that money going toward marketing and research programs. Call it a 'tax', if you want, but it's a tax levied strictly on the producers, and not the taxpayers at large, which was Solo's contention.

The trouble is without being extremely moderate and considered in our responses, you get the ability to point to what is wrong than understand what is right. We all have a "slimy" story of using the meat off the bone of something. Maybe we like to chew the last bit off a T-Bone or rib. Same thing. No one got duped. We just forgot how simple it was to explain.
Ammonia is just used to keep the PH right so you don't run a risk of food illness. Used in most bakery products. But the 99% think ammonia is this nasty chemcial you don't want to clean your bathroom with because you gag. I get it. But they don't.
The key is to get folks to a common aha moment even though they have no background. It is like talking about how vegan diets actually cost more land and water and are less sustainable because you have to grow the food in a narrow band of land etc.

By the way, current rates in the Midwest for farm real estate loans of 30 years are ranging from 4.5% to 6%.....more than residential 30 year mortgages which are currently around 3.75%. What's more, with land values at all time highs, most lenders won't loan a farmer more than 50% of the value of their land being used as security to be in position to survive a downturn in the market. Something the housing industry should have thought of as values were increasing out of control and people were allowed to borrow 100% or more of their home's value. Look where that got us!

I was raised on a small farm in NE Iowa. The work was hard and sometimes the rewards were few. I can't speak for others, but I can tell you that I treated all of our farm occupants as if they were part of my family. I was put on the farm at the age of 10. My parents both worked jobs off the farm. We had dairy cows, beef cows and hogs. I was up every day at 5am for milking and usually finished at 8-10pm every night. I can say that none of the animals in my care were abused in any way. I don't eat veal, foie gras or any food that involves cruelty to animals. Yes, in the spring, the cows had to walk through manure to get to the pastures. This is a natural occurance after the snow melts. Is that cruel? I don't think so. Every cow had a name, every cow was hugged and scratched just like city folk did with their cats and dogs. Just a perspective from someone who lived it until he went away to college.

I grew up on a dairy farm until I was age 10. Both my parents grew up on farms. But when Mom & Dad had 4 kids, Dad got a job working in a factory (better pay & benefits). My parents rented the farmhouse from a neighboring farmer who used the land & barn & silo.
When I was in high school, I worked for 2 different dairy farmers. I never aspired to be a farmer, as I didn't care much about the animals. BUt I did enjoy riding on & driving a tractor. While in college, I spent 3 summers working for a canning factory, working on a field crew driver a pea reaper.
During the 80s, my cousins lost their dairy farm b/c of debt & the drop of land values. I have a lot of respect for farmers & have felt sad about the demise of the family farm. But this article says that 97% of cattle farms are still family farms – Yeah! That's good news!
I regret that our children, now young adults, did not experience life on a farm except for a few days we spent visiting my cousin on their farm. There were a lot of fun aspects of growing up on a farm. We esp enjoyed playing in the barn. We took turns milking a cow by hand, & sometimes shared some milk with nearby cats.
That didn't really tell us anything about how they get from pasture to plate...

What a nonsense article this is. Nowhere do they mention that these cows are being fed corn and how this is NOT a part of their natural diet. They also use beef bi-products in their feed as well. Now days our cattle are cannibals. They do this to cut down on costs.

The stuff that you have posted has come directly out of those two documentaries, which were produced by people with decided agendas. They are, in no way whatsoever, even remotely "objective". If this is your only 'perception' of the food industry in general and meat production specifically, then you really should visit somebody, somewhere and find out the whole story instead of the cherry-picked and overblown worst things possible.
The "cannula" that you make reference to is used in very few animals for RESEARCH purposes only, to determine what is happening during digestion. If you had any idea of the economics of beef production and knew how much it cost to insert one of these devices, you would realize very quickly that this is not – and could not be – a 'routine' beef production practice.
What are you talking about? Cattle are raised out in the open, on pastures or ranges. They have no barns or shelters, and you would have a heck of a time catching a cow to intubate it. It would be terribly expensive. The breeding stock spend their entire lives on pasture and hay, getting little to no grain.
Obviously, when you talk of eating cows, you know nothing about cattle. Generally, we don't eat cows. We eat heifers, steers and bulls, all of whom are young. After the calf is born, it spends several months on the range with it's mother, eating milk, hay and grass. When it is around 500 or so pounds, it is sold to dealers who take them to feed lots. That is when all of the grain feeding commences.
As far as doing surgical procedures on the grain fed animals, don't be silly. That would be very expensive and just not financially feasible. You don't happen to be one of those people who believe that MacDonalds put worms in their beef, are you? Worms, per pound, are much more expensive than beef. But hey, it makes a good story.
I am not in favor of commercial feed lots for feeder cattle, but let's concentrate on the real issues. False claims only weaken your argument. When one point is proven false, all other points are dismissed along with it.
It's a little difficult to understand your arguments because you seem to be calling them all "cows". Cows are fully grown female bovines. Bulls are males and steers are castrated males. Heifers are young cows. Feeder cattle, which you seem to be calling "cows", are young cattle destined for slaughter. These are the only one's who get any appreciable amount of grain or other unnatural feed.
Your arguments would carry a lot more weight if it sounded like you knew what you were talking about.
@ J. White – They will not be put in a 'finishing' feedlot at 500 pounds. They are way too small for that at that size. They would go to a "backgrounding" operation first, where their diet would consist almost entirely, if not entirely, of grass/hay.
J.White: I've seen the actual footage of all this myself. I suggest you open your eyes and watch the videos.
What Frankensteer is describing is called a 'fistula' and s/he has completely mischaracterized what it is. Fistulas are used for nutrition research at universities, not in commercial cattle production. So, yes, Frankensteer may well have seen a video of someone removing food from a cow's stomach through a fistula. That's how the research works. They test the disgestibility of different food by taking samples from the rumen through the fistula. But the idea that any commercial cattle producer would (or could afford to) do that to his cattle on a regular basis is ridiculous. If you've seen a video that suggests otherwise, then the makers of that video are simply lying.
A fistula (which is an access is placed into the side of a cow) is not because the cow is in poor health. It is put in place for one of two reasons 1) for research of digestion so we can better understand the dietary needs of the animals in order to make them healthier and happier or 2) so that feed that is already in the process of being digested that is full of good digestive bacteria can be collected and given to an animal that is sick or been given antibiotics that have disrupted their digestive bacterial populations in order to "jump start" their natural digestive process. Both of these examples are very rare and you should check out your research if you think otherwise. I have never seen any animal on an farm I have ever been on with tubes into it's stomach. Also, it is illegal to feed cattle any mammalian byproducts and if you think Food Inc and Frankensteer are good sources of science-based, unbiased knowledge about agriculture I just ask that you look up the definition of propoganda and then re-watch those films.

No because there is not enough grass to sustain the cows in such a small location on these huge profit farms.
Farther down in the comments the author of this article says that all beef cattle in this country spend at least part of their lives eating grass in pasture. Several other people have weighed in saying their local farmers are doing things right. I grew up in a farming community (not a farmer myself) and I never saw any of the ugly things you mention here happening at any of the farms I spent time at. Judging by your posts the two documentaries you mentioned are likely highlighting horriffic looking events, but if they have footage of it then it must have happened.

I really just want to educate myself. I don't believe that every farm keeps it's cattle in lush green pastures all the time and I don't believe that every farm makes it's cattle in a confined space standing in their manure. I'm interested in finding out what percentages of each exist.
Yeah the documentaries are pretty graphic if you get to see them. Some of these cows don't even get to see outdoors. They have an indoor machine that walks the cows around in circles all day.

The local farmers around here in SoCal have farmer's markets, but if you go to a major grocery store, the beef (especially ground tubed beef) comes from central US. I eat beef, don't get me wrong, but we need to be aware and change our mass-farming techniques out of respect for both human and animal rights.
Frankensteer please be more informed before rambling about a subject, you do not have facts your facts straight. I am a 5th generation cattle feeder / farmer in kansas. All animal by-products were ban from livestock feeds in 1997! We feed ethanol by-products aka corn. A very much health high protein product that is feed with ground hay products along with corn silage, ( corn plant that is cut into fine pieces stored in silo allowed to sit and furment into a highly palitable highly nutrient balance diet that cattle enjoy.
Ally, They aren't on a grain-based diet their entire lives. That's what so many fail to realize. The 'scareumentaries' that have been produced to bash "Big Ag" have done a wonderful job presenting misinformation and half-truths to "lead" people to the wrong ideas, not only about beef production, but about food production and processing as a whole. If you'll go through some of the rest of the thread, you'll find a little more information about actual production practices. Frankensteer appears to have gotten most – if not all – of his "information" from these seriously biased sources.

As far as the biased videos...that's what bothers me. I'm smart enough to know there is biased information on both sides. My problem is, when I'm honestly just trying to figure out the truth, unless it's an obvious/crazy biased source how do I know what to believe and what to discard?

Cattle that are raised for meat production are fed concentrates or grain to add the intramuscular fat that give beef its flavor. It would seem like grass would be the way to go, but there is not enough grass to "finish" cattle on in the world. Cattle that are finished on grass take longer to reach an acceptable market weight as well. As cattle age the muscle fibers become larger and tougher, so they are less desirable for consumer tastes.
Now, don't me wrong, there is lots of grass-fed beef options available on the market. You just have to be willing to pay for the beef (as it takes longer and more resources to produce a pound of beef this way). I would call it an acquired taste to grass fed beef. I personally do not like the taste of straight grass fed beef. I grew up raising purebred cattle, and we would process our own cows. And yes I said cows, due to these cows being old or were unable to produce a calf; we would have the cows "processed". We always put the cows on a grain diet for two weeks prior to being processed, just to add flavor and tenderness into the meat. We also raised "freezer-beef" for neighbors and friends who would buy beef from us. These steers or heifers were fed grass most of their lives, but were kept in a confinement situation and fed a concentrate diet so we could monitor the progress and ensure the quality of beef we were producing. Cattle are just like humans, the more you move the more calories you burn, so cattle in a confinement can move around, but they were not allowed to go wonder the pastures so we could allow them to conserve energy, and use less resources to get them to market weight.
Getting back to the question of "wouldn't it be cheaper" to finish cattle on grass, grass feeding takes more time and more resources as the various types of grass throughout the country have different protein levels. Cattle also have to be strictly managed on the type of grass they are on, as some grasses are poisonous. I just moved to Missouri from West Texas, and I was raised in Eastern Oregon. The way cattle are managed in each of these parts of the country is totally different. Lush rolling green pastures in Missouri are totally different than pastures in Eastern Oregon. With that cattle that are fed in confinement on a concentrate diet are given a specific ration that is formulated to provide them the essential nutrition that they need at that point in their life cycle. What a nonsense article this is. Nowhere do they mention that these cows are being fed co rn and how this is NOT a part of their natural diet. They also use beef bi prod ucts in their feed as well. Now days our cattle are can nibals. They do this to cut down on costs.
This practice and cutting corners to save money is EXACTLY why we're getting sick with flesh eating bacteria and E co li. Spinal fluids have been proven over and over again to be causing these illnesses but we STILL continue to use these sick unethical methods of feeding.
These animals diets are so poor, some of them have external tubes surgically placed into their intestines, so that a human can stick his entire arm into the cow and pull out undigested grain.
If you don't believe me do the research yourself. There are two really informative documentaries on Netflix about cattle. One is called Food Inc and the other is called Frankensteer. If you want to know the truth, and would rather educate yourself, instead of this feel good nonsense article, watch the documentaries.
Remember, It's business as usual, and profits will always be more important than ethical farming or human life.
My husband and I know our farmer and his family by name. We work at a farm one day a week in exchange for a share of organic vegetables. We know how our produce is grown. We also bought half a pig from a farm and get venison from his uncle. We really like knowing where our food comes from and how it was raised before it got to us.
I do agree that we need to treat farmers with respect. It's a hard business in a day and age that respects technology over agriculture. I hope that our food systems can some day return to being local and sustainable instead of occurring in industrial feed lots and mass houses of chickens and pigs.
I want to preface this by saying that this is not an "argument". It is simply a serious question for legitimate thought, for everybody out there.
There are over 8 million people living in New York City right now. How could they possibly be fed if all of the food production were "local"?

Ryan, thank you for bringing important AG issues to a public forum. You have done amazing things trying to get our story to the people we ultimately serve. This article is anything but fluff. The purpose of this article was not necessarily to inform. It just invites you to be informed. As farmers and ranchers we have much to do to show our consumers about how real agriculture works. That includes the good, the bad, and the ugly. In the overall picture I promise there is more good than bad though. It is people like Ryan that will ultimately be a driving force for a better agriculture in America.
Raising cattle is one thing, transporting it to market is another. I've seen the beef handled by truckers. Be careful "y'all."
I feel sorry for WordUpTwo. Her ignorance of the real world is astounding. In Darfur and in many other parts of the world the philosphy is "if it moves it's food". Why doesn't WordUpTwo concern herself with how to bring viable protein to these people? The answer is simple. WordUpTwo is a proud product of an overly-fat society that has given her the CHOICE of being vegetarian. The vast majority of the world's population have no choice and are eating grass and small animals just to survive.

Speaking of ignorance, the article says that a lot of folks do not know how beef gets to our plate. Then it goes on to not tell anything about how beef gets on to our plates. The writer has one chance to write an article to the public and there is nothing; where's the beef?
How can an article about how beef is created miss words like 'pink slime', glued together steaks, feedlot, corn finished, castration, impregnating, downed. Plus, interesting side discussions of veal production, environmental devastation, illegal immigrants working in slaughterhouses, sanitation facilities, mother/calf relations are missing.
BTW, human milk is 5% protein, and is the perfect food for a human growing the quickest with the highest protein needs they will have in their entire life. The only disease I am aware of for humans with low protein levels is kwashior (I don't know anybody with it including the vegetarian crowd), problems of high protein levels are kidney failure and osteoporosis, I'll let you guess which is a more severe problem in this country.

I respect PolyFace Farms, as described in the Omnivore's Dilemma, which is the way beef production should be done. Everyone else who works in the conventional beef production industry is doing it wrong (aka 99% of the industry).

This article was about inviting people not familiar with farmers to learn. I agree that the headline was a bit misleading. It's obvious you have been sopping up the negative stories about food production by your second paragraph. Hitting all of those topics would have required several articles.
This article had nothing to do with dairy cattle, so your comment about human milk was off topic. And if you really believe that 99% of farmers who grow beef cattle are doing it wrong it's obvious you have no intention of learning anything.
My comment about human milk had nothing do with dairy cattle so I have no idea why you bring it up. My comment was that the human needs for protein are fully satisfied without cattle in our diet; adding cattle and other high protein foods is damaging.
I still stand by my comment that 99% of the cattle industry is wrong. Similarly (and a similar business), about 99% of the prostitution business is wrong. If prostitution was done the way Nevada in a legal, regulated way, the prostitute and john and pimp would be in better places. Both cattle and prostitution are necessary evils, which are usually done wrong. Just as atheists are the most knowledgeable about specific facts from many religions, I believe those who know the most about the meat industry are in the fringe group. Those who know the most about meat production are either very much anti-, or else making a lot of money on the inside. I know a lot of information about meat production from reading and being aware, mostly from the anti's because I am not in the industry and the cattle industry doesn't do tours of their facilities and doesn't inform the public.

Having a small cattle operation in Texas myself, I have several points of disagreement with this farmer. While it is true that cattle ranchers are generally humane to their animals, the same cannot be said for factory farmers of chickens and pigs. Many of these animals are confined in small cages for literally their entire lives. I would also question the ethics of the people who run the cattle feed lots. Cattle in feed lots are pumped full of all manner of bad drugs.
Generally though, farmers are some of the hardest-working, most honest people one can meet.
Good article. Division of labor has created the means to wealth but has removed us from some areas of life that are very important. When animals are your life, you tend to have a great deal of respect for those animals. I have never seen farm animals abused.
The only place I've seen animals abused is at hobby farms where a nonfarmer tries to raise a few animals without knowledge of animal husbandry. Real farmers know what they are doing. It has nothing to do with how large or small the farm is. I've been on a lot of farms, large and small. I've been allowed to walk around freely by myself and take any photos I want. They're not keeping any secrets from me. I've also been in several slaughterhouses. No cruelty there, either. I am not a farmer and I have never worked for "big ag." I appreciate American farmers, big and small.

This articles, as others noted, makes it seem like all of our beef is raised in a nice green pasture with beautiful feed. This is simply not true. Caring for your animals doesn't equate to caring about the quality of meat being produced. The numbers of corn fed to grass fed are staggering. I have full respect for farmers but the ones who are essentially assembly line workers throwing corn at the animals is not what I consider a farmer.

I buy my beef from a local butcher, who in turn buys from local farmers here in central ohio.
There really is no contest when compared with a grocery store. This is partly caused by the storage methods of said grocery stores, though.
Find a butcher in your area who buys locally. You won't regret it!
We used to work for a farmer who raised cattle. We got meat for part of our wages. It was so much better than what is in the supermarket.
Eat steaks and stay away from hamburger.
A decent tasting steak can't be faked, but most of your fast-food
burgers are just ground up spent dairy cow heads and hooves.

Most of my mother's side of the family are farmers. Some of my fondest memories are helping out on my grandfather's farm when I was a teenager. He certainly cared about the animals on his farm, but slaughtering, butchering, and the like was always the fate for the farm animals, so he tried not to get too attached to them. Still, I can't remember many meals being better than fried rabbit which came from a freshly killed and butchered rabbit.
Good article. I first met farmers in s GA in my 20s. I met ag students who were raised on ranches and farms in Tx. All good people and most willing to talk about anything.
I think concerns come from articles about sow gestation cages and chicken farms that leave piles of dead foul beside egg layling hens. Some of this is true and some rarely true but few of us have firSt hand experience on farms or ranches. This makes it hard to seperate rare pratices with normal methods. I'd like to know farmer's opinions on heritage seeds and honest assessment (cost and success) of organic raising of cattle and crops. Grocery store level prices tell me a lot but I would like to know if farmers are trying to diversify seed strains and use less antibiotics on cattle or is it just not feasible for large scale production to be successful?

Cherry Pop we use heritage seeds and breeds. Not to take anything away from the information Ryan capably gives, but there ARE farmers out here using a variety of seeds, not one as many would have you believe. Food choices mean farm choices...and what people want there is someone trying to provide it.
The commercial farmer that grows for many must be concerned with basics – what grows on their farm, what he/she has a paying market for, and what makes it to that market. For those dealing with volume, that means often a no-fuss commercial variety. For others, and for consumers wanting more variety that is possible too! Did you know there are actually more than 3,000 varieties of sweet peppers? There's also about that many hot peppers – yet a handful of those are represented on store shelves because of production and the ability to withstand shipping to you, the consumer. For those wanting choices, there are smaller, heritage/heirloom places like us that do cater to you, and welcome new customers. Here we have Buckeye chickens, the only breed developed by a woman, that traces back over 100 years. We actually have several breeds that do – all produce eggs not that unlike modern confinement hens, but offer choices.

I love some grass-finished beef as well! It has a different flavor, but that's what makes beef an eating experience. Each steak provides a slightly different experience. Thankful that there are farmers out there for every option.
This article does not address the difference between grain-fed and pasture raised cattle. Upon reading this article, one would assume that all cattle in the US is grazing on lush green pastures with a nice family looking out for their well being. Sorry, that is not the case. The vast majority of cattle that are consumed in the US live their lives unnaturally eating grain and confined in a "Centralized Animal Feeding Operation" (CAFO) standing in their own feces up to their knee joints. While we would all love to believe the rosy picture painted by this young author as it makes us feel better about the meat we are buying in the grocery store, it just ain't so! I go one step further than this article. Know your farmer! Visit his farm. I only buy meat and dairy from a small group of farmers that I know and trust. The animals are pasture raised and treated humanely. Don't kid yourself after reading this article and think that most of the cattle processing in this country is ethical – IT IS NOT!
Sorry, Tina. You are vastly uninformed. You need to "meet a farmer" and quit getting your information from the anti-agriculture media. While it is true that most beef animals that go to slaughter in this country are "finished" on a grain-rich diet – with most of that grain being corn, they don't "live their lives" in that situation. Decades of research has shown that beef animals only have to be "on grain" for about 100 days – give or take a few – to effect the change in fatty acids that brings about the "grain-fed" flavor that most in this country prefer. These animals generally are slaughtered at something past 16 months of age. Feeding "grain" is expensive, so there aren't many people who are going to feed grain any longer than they must to get the cattle to "grade".
In addition to that, "grain-fed" doesn't mean exclusively feeding grain, which many don't seem to understand. These animals still eat copious quantities of grass/hay while they are being "grain fed".
Oh, by the way, if you think the dairy cattle in the "small group of farmers that I know and trust" aren't being fed grain, chances are almost 100% that you are dead wrong.

i was looking to see information on how cattle are humanely killed for our food supply, or how they are housed and treated. the article is all fluff.
i know about kosher and the rules about treating the animals well. i learned about halal and the Islamic tradition that is similar. but it seems that christians have no morals where killing animals are concerned. i have heard horror stories of chickens being electrocuted, cattle being slaughtered in front of each other, etc. most americans have no clue as to where their food comes from, how it gets to their plates, and this article says nothing about that.
i live in farm country. i see cows as i drive around every day. i see humane farms, i grew up around them. but the large outlets like walmart, huge grocery chains, and mcdonalds and other large retailers/restaurants source their meat and animal products from inhumane conditions. you are right about knowing who you are dealing with and how their farms are run.
i wish more americans cared about how the food gets to their plates. i don't suggest anyone instantly become vegan, they just need to insist on humane treatment of the animals whose sacrifice is to be your dinner.

Well said. There is a certain amount of ignorance that most people need in order to eat meat. I have little doubt that if they were involved or even witnessed the process first hand they wouldn't be able to stomach it. I also believe farmers would suffer financially if the truth got out.. I think more people are concerned about how animals are treated these days.

The 'truthfulness' of your comments regarding what actually happens in the process of raising/slaughtering these animals therefore is completely without credibility.

If you were able to think beyond the end of your fork, you might recognize that the folks who come to abhor modern farming practices may have come to their conclusions after witnessing first-hand the horrific & cruel methods involved. To just write me off as non-credible because of the position I have taken is just being blind and the epitome of one-sided. I am not some city-slicker, I grew up with farming in Ohio, was in 4-H for 11 years, worked for a time on a hog and beef farm (owned by a relative Bob Evans, no less). I also had occasion from time to time to perform a service at one of the largest feed lots in Southwest Ohio as well as a large veal operation and again a large slaughter house in the area. I can tell you that cumulatively over time I could not stomach what I witnessed on a daily basis, and THAT is what my position is based on, not some article or some PETA ad.
So perhaps before you start pecking at your little keyboard, you should ask where someone is getting their information. I too have many stories to tell, just as Ryan Goodman does. But just because mine don't have the happy little endings and feel-good nature that his does do not make them any less personal or any less credible.

In the U.S., federal law (Humane Slaughter Act, 1958) dictates that all animals – from chickens up to cattle – must be rendered unconscious prior to exsanguination (bleeding). Slaughtering an animal following these measures literally results in an animal dying from blood loss/lack of oxygen, which happens while the animal is unconscious. If the first attempt to render an animal unconscious is unsuccessful, the action must be repeated. Kosher and halal slaughter are granted exceptions to this requirement due to the unique requirements of these food codes.
Chickens typically have been stunned by allowing their combs to drag through a very shallow trough of salt-water while the hackle passes in contact with an electrified buss bar, thereby creating enough current to render the animals unconscious, but not enough to kill them. So they are quite literally shocked, but they may or may not be "electrocuted", depending on your perception of electrocution – if you perceive it to be fatal, then the birds aren't electrocuted.
Removing the blood from a carcass is the first means of 'preservation' that is applied, as blood is a perfect medium for bacterial growth. For that reason, all slaughter methods are designed to keep the heart beating while the animal is unconscious so that the blood is more completely removed from the carcass.
That should be "shackle", not "hackle".
Ugh.
With all of the great meat alternatives available, why would anyone subject another living, feeling being to something this horrific?

@ WordUpToo – You ever had surgery? What do you think happens then? The patient is rendered unconscious, something is cut on, they bleed, the blood loss is stopped, the cut is closed, the patient regains consciousness, and then there is pain. That's why we have lortab, percodan, etc. The animal never experiences pain after it's rendered unconscious, that's the entire point and the very reason the Humane Slaughter Act was passed.
You should get out in the "real" wild sometime and see what happens to animals when a predator(s) gets hold of them if you think livestock slaughter is 'inhumane'.
@What? – To equate animal slaughter with human surgery is ludicrous. Yes I have had surgery, but I was not made to stand up to my knees in feces for months or even years prior to, nor fed antibiotics and ground up animal parts first, nor was I goaded with electric prods into a cramped trailer, hauled hundreds of miles in extreme temperatures, sent down a chute to be rendered (hopefully, not always) unconscious with a bolt shot through my head before the procedure. You make it sound like they just go quietly to sleep! So far from reality. Get a clue What?
@ WordUpToo – I will promise you that I have had more first-hand experience with this than you have. Your 'allegations' are half-truths, at best. There isn't an animal in this country that has stayed in a "feedlot" for years. If you knew anything about 'grading' and requirements/restrictions for the various grades you would know this. Your exaggeration surpasses hyperbole and gets into the realm of pure delusion.
Cattle usually are transported in a 'cramped' trailer, that is true – do you have any idea why? It's so that they don't get tossed back and forth in the trailer as it goes down the road with the end result that several of them wind up with broken legs! I'm sure you also know that there are FEDERAL rules that regulate how long the animals can be on the trailers without a break (28 hours)? And I'm sure that you also know that this "break" includes feeding and watering the animals and that it must be AT LEAST 5 HOURS LONG? No, you didn't know that? – I'm not surprised.
On the subject of extreme temperatures: I don't know too many people who keep their animals in nice, air-conditioned barns during the hot summer months, but I suppose you do? In the winter, the cattle – just like "wild" animals – tend to huddle together to conserve body heat. They will do this inside a barn or outside. Extreme temperatures are extreme whether the cattle are in the pasture or on the road.
Manure up to their knees? At times, possibly. But that's going to be the norm. There's a big difference between plain old "mud" and "manure", too. If the animals are in a somewhat confined area during a wet seaon, there's going to be mud, and maybe lots of it. This can happen with pastured animals, too, if there's a favorite "hang-out" or the particular field is tight/over-grazed, etc. – and they do have their favorite "hang-outs", much like teenagers.
Should be "That's not going to be the norm". (Too much edit on-the-fly.)
A note on the subject of electric cattle prods:
I have dealt with literally thousands of head of beef cattle, in one capacity or another. It is my opinion that probably 75% or more of the time that electric prods are used, they are simply a "crutch" for somebody who either 1) has no idea how to really handle the animals or 2) has decided they don't have time to deal with the animals like they should.
There are instances where electric prods are very helpful, if not necessary, and these include instances of human safety from a deranged animal. I've never seen but one animal that was truly 'crazy', but he was absolutely "certifiable". Without an electric prod that night, somebody would ultimately have gotten hurt. (He nearly tore down the barn as it was.)

Then I guess the farmers on my mother's side of the family were/are all in the minority. Every one of their farms had a combination of cattle pastures (for the cattle to roam during the day) and a feed lot/barn for them to eat and sleep at night. And no, there was never enough manure on the feed lot to reach up to the cows' knees. All it takes is a tractor with a front loader on it to clean the feed lot while the cattle were all out in the pasture. I honestly don't think that the vast majority of farmers raising cattle are as evil as you make it out to be. That's certainly not been my experience.
Now that we have heard the fairytale version, let's hear the rest of the story. The stench and filth of feedlots, cattle living out the majority of their lives on concrete and crammed head to tail while being fattened, long and arduous transportation to slaughter houses where the "humane" methods are rarely such. Yes there might be a number of family farmers still trying to do it the "right" way, but for the most part, your American beef comes from a much nastier and cruel supply chain. Let's hear from one of the industrial BIG AG folks about their methods please, as it has unfortunately become the norm in US beef production. Doesn't take a vegan to see what's wrong with that.

Tina, thank you for the comment. You raise a valid concern about the difference between feeding cattle a diet of grasses or grains. Truth is all beef cattle are grass-fed – born and raised on pastures. In this country, because of market demands, feeding cattle a finish weight, and looking for a market for excess grains and grain by-products, farmers began feeding cattle to produce heavier carcasses, more quickly. So those cattle being fed in CAFOs may end their life in pens smaller than grass pastures, but did indeed spend most of their life on pasture.
If you'll note at the end of the post, I did encourage everyone to get to know their farmer and even off to help you find farmers online who may be from your local area.

Tina, I meant to add.... There are some great farmers out there supplying grass-finished, organic, and natural products for those who want it. That is one of the good things about food and agriculture in this country. We have a choice in what we buy and eat, and we should continue to be able to have that choice.

Care to cite a source to back up that claim? You are entitled to your opinion, but you are not entitled to make up your own facts.
Actually cattle spend very little time in a CAFO. They are there two to four months to finish out growing on grain. But you already knew that didn't you Tina and just wanted to try to place a black spot on an otherwise very well written report.

Real and honest Sarah? You need to get out a bit more. Here in the midwest (Ohio), the vast majority of beef production is not the happy place that this article describes. I grew up in 4-H and around farming, and the bucolic pastures and comfortable barns of my childhood are unfortunately a thing of the past, replaced with confinement BIG AG feedlots where things just ain't so pretty. I would reckon you can taste their fear and discomfort in every bite of that mass-produced, plastic-wrapped pile of cruelty.
WordUpToo- I have been involved in the "slaughter" of animals for my entire life. Growing up in a meat shop, being involved in the meat industry, I have gotten many opportunities to tour through many slaughter plants. And yes, I agree, the slaughter of an animal is not something that is "pretty" or something can be easily "glamorized". But having seen what I've experienced, what I've seen, my "behind the scenes" look, I have full confidence in our meat industry today. And yes, I agree with you that we keep a lot of things behind closed doors. I will fully admit that as an industry we can do better! I try my best to provide my customers with transparency. I will show you whatever you want to see, pretty or not! It is also why I support Ryan's encouragement to have a discussion about these issues... Feel free to ask us questions as I see you have many concerns about what it is that I do. When it comes to issues that we are both passionate about, it's easy to put our defenses up. Please take this wonderful opportunity to ask questions. There is also another meat processor that commented with her contact information. Call me biased and dismiss my comments if you'd like, but I know that if I wanted to know more about a surgical procedure, I'd ask my doctor. Why does the same not apply to how our food is produced..?

Thank you for right such a great article. What we have to remember about being in the ranching and farming community that it does us no good to get mad at those who don't know the facts or are presented with the wrong facts. If we can come at them with the intelligence and with the studies than they are less likely to return the anger. Hopefully talking in a calm manner will get these people to listen. Yes there is going to be a large group of them that don't want to hear it. But we still need to keep a level head and present the facts.
Ryan, first off I'd like to congratulate you on being featured on Eatocracy. It's no small feat, and I'm excited for you to find yourself on this forum. Then, I'd like to go on to congratulate you on a well-written, sincere, engaging piece. You are a great example of what an advocate should be; you listen, you communicate, you reflect on the views of others, and you work toward the common good of your cause. I wish more people could be so eloquent and approachable when sharing their viewpoints.

Thanks to Ryan for this great article! I think it's amazing that people want to know more about food and production agriculture. It’s good that the general public is starting to ask questions about what’s going on out here in rural America! However, it becomes a problem when those questions are answered by extreme organizations. Farmers and ranchers make up a small community – but we do big things! We need to connect with the non-farm public in so many ways. They are bombarded with so much mis-information and blatantly wrong information. Education about agriculture and what it means to us should start in the home and continue in the schools. You can't be a computer technician or a stock broker or even a rock star if you don't have good food to eat, good water to drink and good air to breathe. College degrees will be of no use without these three basics for life. Farmers provide the food and they take good care of the other two. We need to be as vocal as ag's detractors. We have a better story to tell than all of them put together.
My grandpa was a farmer. Some of the best memories I have was when I turned 9 in the summer of 1990, I spent the summer with him in South Dakota. Riding the tractor, chasing cows, stepping in cow chips, growing corn and soybeans, trapping gophers and racoons, tending the garden, eating apples of the tree, fresh horse radish straight out of the back yard, etc.. I was in charge of mowing the lawn, on a Forest Gump Snapper riding mower.

If I could be a farmer, I would be. The only thing about it is the complete financial uncertainty. A string of bad summers can nearly ruin you. Sure, there's insurance policies for that but you pretty much break even. Sort of like living paycheck to paycheck. But, as any gardener can tell you, it's very rewarding.
Nice to see CNN embrace various viewpoints on the eatocracy blog! Having met Ryan a few times, I would say he fit my stereotype for ranchers - honest, hard-working, and soft-spoken. The fact that more and more of the people in agriculture are making themselves available to others is a great advancement that social media enables.... Ryan can be on horseback in a pasture somewhere and still tweet.

Wonderful piece, it gave me goosebumps. I am proud to be a farmer's wife and the mother of future apriculturalists. I thank God everyday to be a part of something so important. I pray that the general public sees the light that by supporting extremist groups they are literally cutting off the hands that feed them. Keep up the good fight Ryan, we are behind you all the way!!!
Farmers represent great values. But we have done a terrible job explaing what farming does or is. You can't grow non-dirty carrots by definition. A sow gestation crate may actually be a kindness. Sure it looks cramped. Give the sow more room. She doesn't want to move around much! Open the crate. She doesn't leave to join essentially pushy pack animals. They were created first by veterinarians! But you know, we need to understand the sentiment of folks who may mean well (many in this thread) but just don't know. The pictures they have in their heads are the problem. We need to match feelings with feelings and facts. But we can't just puke data on them. Until they feel the pride of the American farmer, it will be hard to convince them the farmer really knows best much like the vet knows best much like their doctor knows best. Hmmmm
UM. it really isnt necessary to be fed by slaughterg cows. We dont really need that kind of protein. I can get all that with whole wheat, nuts, etc....

Good for you Ryan, presenting agriculture with a positive spin . There needs to be more people like you in agriculture, worldwide. We are beef and lamb producers in Australia and it seems that we have the same urban disconnect that you obviously have in the USA.
The cold, hard facts are that farmers/ranchers raise animals to be killed for human consumption. It doesn't mean that the animals have terrible lives. In fact, our stock run out in pastures all year round – clean, green, fresh pastures in the open air. We don't pump them full of chemicals – they have one drench/year and a (natural) mineral based treatment. We spend time with them – desensitising them to dogs, motor bikes and the like, making them very easy to handle which in turn, makes them far less likely to be stressed. When they have grown out, they're mustered, trucked to an abattoir and killed. I have been through an abattoir – it's not pretty but it's part of the cycle. You see life and death every day on the farm.
I respect the vegans and vegetarians' choice not to eat meat. What I don't respect, is the holier-than-thou attitude of them declaring that no-one should be allowed to eat meat.
The disrespect shown to farmers in recent times has been soul destroying but it obviously is not a problem only in Australia. Our entire northern cattle industry was shut down last year in a knee-jerk reaction to a vegan animal liberationist who went to Indonesia (our neighbour and large importer of Australian beef) and filmed ONE steer being mistreated.
These northern cattle stations are run on very slim margins and most of them went without income for nearly a year. The Australian government doesn't subsidise farmers – we're on our own over here. We don't get low or interest-free loans. We pay commercial rates.
All the city dwellers seem to see is the large landholdings, the infrastructure and equipment needed to run a farm and get the impression that we're all incredibly wealthy. They don't take into consideration that most farms return a profit of less than 3% of assets.
We have a weekend in Australia where farmers all over the country, volunteer to throw open their gates to have city people visit to see how their food and fibre is produced. Only in it's infancy, it has been growing in popularity as more and more city people are become interested in where their food comes from.
I encourage all of you who live in the cities – don't blindly believe the propaganda generated by the animal liberationists about where your food comes from. Make an effort to get to know a farmer and see for yourself. It may not be as bad as you think.
OK .. nice try there Jacqui. Actually it IS that bad. First of all, nobody is going to believe the countryside is full of happy pastures with grazing cows .. Everybody knows facory farms are how cattle are raised, brought to slaughter weight in record time, and killed. Also, If anybody here believes you need to eat meat to get enough protein, they are very uneducated and truly hopeless. Any registered dietician in north america will tell you that even vegetarians have at least twice the protein a human body actually needs. Meat eaters have up to 4 times what they need. I am not a vegan or vegetarian, but I do eat less meat because it has been proven time and time again a diet which consisting of too much meat will cause heart disease, cholesterol, obesity, increased risk of stroke, the list goes on. It is clear people here do not educate themselves on how to look after themselves. Anybody who hasn't lived under a rock knows today's cows have never even seen a blade of grass. They are pumped full of antibiotics (no normal animal could survive the disgusting conditions of a factory farm without them) and hormones, and contaminated grain. People still wonder why they get obese and end up with cancer. Truthfully, if you can eat all that junk, you should be ready to face the consequences. (I keep my meat to a minimum and try to always buy organic.. if you cant afford organic, maybe you would rather spend the money on medical bills and cancer treatments.. because that`s part of the package)
