While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday. Time for some Angus management - May 28 is National Hamburger Day! The humble hamburger seems to have had a facelift in recent years. Hamburgers of late feature all sorts of newfangled ideas, like the foie gras burger, Texas toast burger, or donut burger. Making the ultimate burger is, ultimately, up to you. Ask your local butcher for freshly ground meat, and consider trying a meat blend with a cut like brisket for added flavor and texture. Ideally, you want a patty that will crust up well on the grill, stay juicy and won’t fall apart on you. The patties aren't the only part of this meaty equation. Bread usually acts as a carrying vessel, and shouldn’t be neglected. Butter each side of the bun and toast alongside the patties to prevent a soggy mess. Go wild and experiment with different types of breads and rolls. You could also whip up your own condiments; homemade mayo is sure to win over even the most ardent sandwich spread lover. Burgers also aren’t limited to the bovine variety. Turkey, chicken, shrimp, crab and veggies all make great burgers. Or you could try my personal favorite, the lamb burger: 1 pound ground lamb (or buy boneless lamb stew meat and grind it yourself) Combine the lamb, feta, cumin, salt and pepper. Be careful not to over work the meat. Divide into four patties and refrigerate. Cut the potatoes into wedges. Toss with olive oil, salt and pepper and place on a baking sheet. Add the sprigs of rosemary. Bake at 375 for 20 minutes or until crispy. Toss once or twice to prevent burning. Fifteen minutes before grilling, take patties out of the fridge. Sear each side for 2-3 minutes on a preheated cooking surface that’s been rubbed with canola or vegetable oil. Remove the burgers, cover with tinfoil and let rest. Cut a slit into each of the pita pockets and place them on a ungreased baking tray and heat them up with the potatoes. You don’t want them to get crispy, just warmed through so they’re pliable. Place each patty in a pita pocket. Slather on tzatziki sauce and stuff in some arugula. Serve with the potatoes and extra tzatziki sauce for dipping. More on burgers: - Best. Burgers. EVER and Best. This is very fascinating, You're a very skilled blogger. I have joined your feed and look ahead to seeking more of your great post. Also, I've shared your site in my social networks
Where's the pink slime...is that the butchers scrap barrel they just dumped into the grinder...I thought that was the garbage can, LOL Yeah, enjoy a burger!
I propose changing National Hamburger Day to July 4th. Now, go send a salami to your boy in the army.
Do animal rights activitis seriously have nothing better to do then to troll all Eatocracy articles that talk about meat, or espouse their hatred about the "meat industry?" As to the obesity claim...
I am pretty sure that potato chips, cupcakes, candy, and soda are vegetarian, but yes, let's blame the "evil meat" as the reason why are nation is facing an "obesity crisis?" Using the logic demonstrated on this page, if I suddenly ate nothing but vegan desserts, I would lose more weight then someone who ate an occasional burger. Putzes
No they don't.
She should have written a little bit about Memorial Day too.
Haven't had a burger in over 30 years.
Matt you're crazy. You think this is no big deal. It's so stupid that today is National Burger Day instead of Memorial Day. That author has gone crazy.
It is memorial day idiot. Eatocracy fat f***'s
Don't see lamb get much love in the ground form. Nice way of thinking and giving a shout out to the Sheep industry. Very nice.
1 heart attack on a bun coming up!
Hope that everyone had a fine weedend. Now back to work.
Nope! When youre staring down a tropical storm, its hearty Clam Chowda' Day! The only way to deal with the damp!
The article is about burgers. Not the Memorial Day holiday. What's hard to understand about that?
OMG, how can you be so proud of doing that to a child? Junk? Are you serious? Give him an apple.
Maybe some day I'll have a holiday to commemorate my passing away. Which is obviously overdue going by comments like that one.
Actually, take away the bun, give him the meat and some veggies and fruit. Fatty meat is not your enemy, your body thrives on it. Starchy carbs and grains are your enemy.
you're kidding, right? you don't know much about nutrition, dude.
He is right. Its more about the high energy carbs. Its a mixture of fats and carbs that are bad for you if you eat to many but its much easier to eat more carb calories than it is from protein/meat calories. Yes there is fat in meat but if its grilled there isn't as much as if its cooked on the stove in the juices/ie, fat.
@dk: the efficacy of high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets has been demonstrated time and tim again. As long as you reduce your carbohydrates to the point of ketosis, fat doesn't matter. You're obviously a conformist who believes in conventional wisdom.
This is a very personal topic. The editor needs to back off. My grandpa (mom's dad) and my own dad both served and LOVED to BBQ. I honor them with a BBQ each Memorial Day and pay respects to photos of them (placing food in front of the photos) much like how Buddhists do it, but I'm still a Catholic.
It's all a matter of the situation. You're offending a lot of people with BS articles like this.
Agreed. People need to relax. Not everyone BBQs, but this stupid article makes it sound like EVERYONE does it. We all have our own ways of paying our respects. We feast, we remember, and pay respects. These CNN goons never take this into account.
The editor is perfectly fine. May 28th has been National Hamburger Day for several years now. Memorial Day just happened to be on the same day this year.
Perhaps you should do a bit of research before crying about nothing.
You should thank the troops for gathering all those rare earth minerals in Afghanistan or you wouldn't be typing this stuff on the internet!!!
Occupy stereotypical anti-military banter
I thank a fireman for saving my house, I thank a waiter for good service, why do I care what the soldiers do? what have they done? got me cheap oil? was someone really gonna invade the USA and thats why we police the world? did the solider get drafted or did they choose to do a job where they might get blown up so the federal government could do ? I dunno what..why are we in so many places in the world? its a huge expense and I dont get it...I'm all for supporting the USA troops, give them lazers, the armour, ,the best weapons to do their job..but you want me to thank them? give me a reason Im thanking them...thanks
Moron. Or Troll. Or both. Either way, you, my dear sir, are an idiot.
thats not an answer, so tell me the answer, or you jut outed yourself to be a moron
You should thank the troops for gathering all those rare earth minerals in Afghanistan or you wouldn't be typing this stuff on the internet!!!
But yes, I see your point. It's sickening how we thank people for killing others because some politician created a phony war for resources.
Tebow wept.
Feeding something that huge to a little kid is ridiculous. No wonder obesity is at record levels in the U.S. That kid's parents are setting him up for an extremely unhealthy and unproductive life (and, the taxpayers end up with the tab at the end of the day).
its a nation of lazy fat and dumb now..all we do is whine about everything...
Oh for the love of all things small and furry, have you ever heard of artistic license? If the kid had a kid sized burger it wouldn't be much of a picture now would it?
RELAX! It's only a picture.
I WONDER IF ITS NATIONAL HAMBURGER DAY IN MIAMI ?..........................
I see three articles about Memorial Day, what do you people want? How many articles can you make about Memorial Day? Maybe the whole page of CNN should be Memorial Day articles all saying the exact same thing.
The fact that Memorial Day, a solemn holiday of remembrance, and Burger Day, a National Day of remembrance to the National Beef Council, an agency that superfunds elections to the midwest beef prducers and puts out of busiess family owned cattle farms across the country, while lining the pockets of polititians that no longer serve the people, but the corporate greed that is today's idea of capitalism at it's best, are on the same day thi year is mere co-incidence. Toast hardy those billionaires that ground that beef in their great ginding machines, and watch the papers for the recall of beef that will ke you all ill. Cheers, enjoy your lean varigated amoniated beef product.
I'm with the ham industry, and we're fed up with hamburgers not having ham on them. It isn't right, and we're not putting up with it anymore.
Yeah well, I'm with the booger industry and we're sick and tired of people not putting their boogers on their ham. We're mad as hell and not going to take it anymore!
Sounds more like you're with the pathetically gross jerk industry
OH GO BLOWWW YOURRRRR NOSEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
I always put ham and bacon on my burgers. I also mix the beef witth ground chicken and ground turkey so all of the lobiests get some action.
Ain't nothin' till you put a booger on it too, dammit!
Well, there's nothing more patriotic than eating the cow raised on American soil, fed with subsidized corn, slaughtered and packaged by Mexicans brought over to work for corporate Ag. and then ratted out by those very companies to the INS (of course with out receiving their pay), and then served on bread made with subsidized wheat with a side of fried potatoes. America!
Why all this hate?
As other posters have pointed out, Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May, while National Burger Day is observed on May 28th; the two just happened to be on the same day this year. Moving one for the other is rude. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if many of the "outraged" posters had no idea today was National Burger Day or even knew it existed without reading this article.
Many people observe Memorial Day with grilling, cookouts, and burgers, anyway, so the two observances falling on the same day does not hurt anyone.
Also, I do not eat meat, and I'm not going to act like a jerk and tell others what they can and cannot eat. People who do look like fools.
I notice people who don't eat meat look sick.
seriously, people who don't eat meat look sick, really you wrote that?
people who eat meat die younger, are generally fatter, have their arteries clogged by animal fat, look older than vegans of the same age, and yeah, they look more sick...
can't believe your comment.
Yep, Cory, all that vegetarian stuff like candy, soda, french fries, potato chips, and cookies have nothing to do with obesity. Its just that evil meat. Why, if I lived off a diet of vegan style cake with soy vanilla milk, I would still be skinnier a carnivore who eats chicken with vegetables, an occasional burger with tomato, lettuce, and onions on it, et all.
I think the lack of protein is getting to your brain
Calm down everyone! Yes, it's Memorial Day, so remember the fallen and treat your fellow service members a good burger to thank them.

"Eat Mor Chikin"
I'm pretty sure this is an old reposted article since I do recall reading it before, as an avid visitor to food sites. You all need to calm down. The dates coincide. A few paragraphs on the eatocracy blog does not diminish the service of our troops and fallen heroes. If the offended on here want to rail on somebody, get on social media and rail at those posting "Happy Memorial Day." A phrase that sounds off to me, as someone who is remembering a family member lost in war today (although I remember him every day).
Dear people: Burger day happens to fall on the 28th of May every year.
This year, the last Monday in May and the 28th of May happen to be on the same day.
Furthermore, this article was probably written several months ago, and the author likely had no idea that the 28th was also Memorial Day.
Furthermore, this is the food blog.
Wow, really CNN? Do your editors have the day off?
It is NOT National Burger Day. It is Memorial Day
Well, actually, it's both. Memorial Day always falls on the last Monday of May, while National Burger Day falls on the 28th of May.
It just happens to coincide this year.
Well then, you CHANGE NATIONAL HAMBURGER DAY so it doesn't fall on the SAME FREAKING DAY AS MEMORIAL DAY. "In order to honor our veterans who gave their lives in defense of liberty, National Hamburger Day will be set aside until August something or other." How freaking hard is that?
Happy National Burger Day everyone! Who cares about the fallen soldiers, they CHOSE to fight for a country that does nothing for them and their families. Anybody who joines the military is a fool. WHAT FREEDOMS? I've lived here my whole life and it is more like the Land of Restrictions.
Soldiers don't deserve a day. They are paid employees of the US government. They chose the their career with the military, just like hack writers choose to work for HuffPo. Yes, members of the armed forces get shot at, but so do police officers, EMS workers in the hood and even pizza delivery drivers. Yet the only profession we worship are the soldiers. The guy that went crazy at Fort Hood was a soldier. Should we be memorializing him? People are people, and no deserves a holiday for working other than Labor Day. Thank God for National Hamburger Day actually making a holiday worth observing.
Well, maybe today shouldn't be National Burger Day for you, as red meat, along with useless rage over a non-issue clearly cannot be doing anything good for your blood pressure.
Jmaine – You are a complete and utter fool! You don't deserve to live in this great country! You have lived here in the land of plenty with more freedoms than anyone else on this planet and yet all you can do is whine and complain! Do you even have a job? Do you contribute a single worthwhile effort of ANYTHING to your community or are you just a self-serving sponge?
I understand someone who questions our involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, but to CLAIM that you have NO FREEDOM is pure self-serving Krap! What on earth do you wish to do that is not allowed in the USA?
So let me guess. If it's cow farmer big profits day then it must also be buy a new Weber grill day right? Nothing says make a profit like declaring national holidays by stepping all over and stealing the thunder from true holidays. We love to save the grand finale for the end of the year to show how much we really care about our savior. The more you spend, the more you care baby!
OH MY GOSH! IT'S MEMORIAL DAY AND YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT HAMBURGERS! WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?
OH MY GOSH! Settle down....maybe cause barbecuing is a big part of memorial day. Relax
You need to Google Memorial Day
A lot of people do bbq at home in Memorial Day!
I think you people are being a little rough on the author. Yes, she should have probably acknowledged Memorial Day, but is it so terrible that Memorial Day and Hamburger Day fell on the same day and she failed to say something? This article could have been written 3 months ago and she didn't even realize it was MD.
Why not make an awesome burger and thank all our vets in the pre-feast blessing?
Ummm, Memorial Day was created long before murder-millions-of-cows day, oh i mean hamburger day.
The slaughter industry wanted to get in on the 'action' of a long-weekend, not caring about people who fought for this country. They don't care about your health or cows, so no surprise.
Wow, absolutely no class whatsoever. It's Memorial Day today CNN. Such a shame – you can't even mention the true holiday. So many gave the ultimate sacrifice, and this is how you honor the day?
This is the FOOD SECTION OF CNN, genius. The article commemorating the true purpose of Memorial Day is the MAIN HEADLINE ON THE PAGE.
Reading not a strong suit for you?
So this being in the food section means there is a free pass on stupidity and disrespect? Awesome, you must be so proud.
Ironic that you have the freedom to choose to worship your sandwich today(of all days), rather than recognize and celebrate the national holiday – all because of the freedoms protected by the many that gave the ultimate sacrifice.
Really, couldn't even mention once with a simple reference why today is the THE largest picnic day of the year?
Todd, Please spare us your phony self-righteous indignation! You are PlSSlNG and Moaning about nothing in the FOOD section you fool! Get a life...
Today is Memorial Day not some holiday about food. So go and remove your head form your fourth point of contact and get with the program. This isn't a day about getting together with family, it isn't a day about cooking out, this sure isn't a day about sales and shopping. This is a day to remember those whose lives were taken from them during combat operations. Men and woman like CW4 Bruce Smith, Maj Ronald Culver and SSG Jarred Fontenot who will never again be with their family. Simply distasteful.
oh settle down. People like you just have to find fault with everything. You're the reason society can't have nice things.
You (and your ilk) the reason this country has no respect.
Its' because of the people like me and the ones we are supposed to be honoring today why we can have nice things.
Lol at people being offended. Omg people are enjoying life! Cry more.
1) This shows that the slaughter industry doesn't care about veterans.
2) They don't care about your health or the millions of cows that get killed.
And WE certainly don't care about YOUR pet-peaves! Holidays are for enjoyment and celebration of our freedoms! Apparantly YOU celebrate by being self-righteous and spewing hatred! I hope you are "enjoying" yourself...
McDonalds. Proud sponsor of National Hamburger Day. "You deserve a break today." So enjoy some dead flesh on a bun.
Let me guess, you're vegan, right? And you're probably also a big supported of PETA. You eat bean sprouts and tofu and you're a tree hugging hippie. You don't sound too wild to me. Come to Texas and we'll show you wild, buddy!
*supporter =P typo
Wrong on all counts. And I've been to Texas many times. Been to Austin and Dallas mostly. Killed pigs with a buddy. I just think having a "holiday" that celebrates eating dead flesh that coincides with Memorial Day is F'd up.
Yeah, you win the argument by saying you'll beat up anyone who doesn't agree with you! (Oh wait, sorry, it's Texas, you're probably threatening to shoot them). Wait to go internet tough guy!
I assume National Hot Dog Day is July 4th.
No, July 4 is now, 'We No Longer Have Our Independence Day and We're All Too Fat and Lazy To Not Become Slaves To Politicians, Bankers, and Evil People In The World Because We Ate Too Many Damn Hamburgers Day!"
"I'd like to thank everyone for coming to Arlington National Cemetery today in honor of.............Oops, excuse me, I forgot it's National Hamburger Day. My mistake.
Yummmm. Nothin' like consuming dead flesh on a bun. I bet the guy in Miami who ate the other guy's face wished he had some A1.
You realize that NO ONE here gives a Krap about your personal hang-ups! You're just PlSSlNG IN the WIND! I hope you enjoy it...
Beef is the ONLY ingredient in hamburger (chicken, turkey, Lamb, are NOT burgers merely sandwiches).memorial day is different for everyone, example my father was a veteran of WW@ but my wife’s family is not American and none have every served in any military. So for her and her friends it is only an opportunity to have a party .My family has no living veterans all have passed most by natural causes and a couple in service of our country(but I have never known any of them except my father).
I was going to reply to this len, but thought the better of it. Tell your wife and her family
that this veteran hopes they enjoy their party.
Many have lost family that fought in wars and if they was with us they would not want us to miss a cook out and you can make believe that family is with you when your all together
Hmmm. All this time I thought it was Memorial Day. I'll call up the families
of my friends that have died in combat and let them know what they
were fighting for.
Thank you, CNN for setting me straight.
@ Ethicalanarchistm – Amen to that.
Ahh, CNN...how classy...it's NOT National Hamburger Day.....it's MEMORIAL DAY.......this sickens me that you would even write an article like this and post it.
Rich, that was my thought exactly. +10000 to you.
I can only assume the both of you failed or didn't bother to noitce that this article appears under the eatoracy (a.k.a. Food Section). Excellent work taking something completely out of context
Context Joe? The headline is "National Burger Day", and this happens to be memorial day??? How much context do we need?
Meat is horrible. Grow some empathy, the means doesn't justify the end.
Think about if it was you made to live in some cage, only to have a bolt shot in your head.
Meat dot org.
In a country suffering from childhood obesity and adult obesity, what a great day for them. Keep eating those greasy sliders with cheese, bacon and bread. See yoy at the heavier convention.
One burger every once in a while does no harm, especially home made ones cooked on the grill with lower fat cuts of beef.
Len, a little murder once in a while you mean.
You do an inhumane thing every time you eat meat. Grow some balls and say no, you're not going to support
an industry that mistreats and kills billions of animals a year.
Heck, even Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath is vegan, and Woody Harrelson, Joaquin Phoenix, sexy Olivia Wilde, Bryan Adams, Kevin Nealon, etc. etc.
read some stuff at meat dot org.
Do you anti meat eaters have nothing better to do then to troll every hamburger related piece? To the original troll, I am sure the obesity has more to do with all those vegetarian snacks, i.e. potato chips, ice cream, candy, soda, etc. No meat in those.
What's wrong with a lean burger with some mustard, tomato, lettuce, and onion? That's more veggies in one meal then most adults I know. Get off your high horse, and enjoy a nice, meaty burger. As for the salad head......go Occupy a butcher shop
Cory, Please spare us your hipocracy and phony outrage! Are you aware of the FACT that plants have feelings too? This has been proven many times over in numerous biological studies! Every time you eat a sprout or spinach, you have murdered a defenseless plant that cannot even move out of your way! Even though plants scream out in pain as loudly as they can, you do not hear their futile cry! You are just as guilty of murder as the rest of us, so please spare us your self-righteous Krap!
