The maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread heads to court Tuesday to try to throw out its union contracts, in a battle that leaves the iconic baker's future very much in doubt. Hostess Brands, which makes Ding Dongs and a variety of other sweet treats, is asking the bankruptcy court in White Plains, N.Y. to tear up labor agreements, which would, among other things, allow Hostess to change how it funds union pensions. The hearing is expected to last two days. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, together represent more than three-quarters of the 18,500 workers at the company. But both management and the unions agree that the company is unlikely to survive a strike. Read - Strike threat at Hostess could kill off Twinkies Previously - Take my snack cakes? Good grief stop the apples and oranges talk. The company said, if they can't get contract relief, they will probably end up going out of business. The union leaders agree with this assessment. So, why all the talk, go forward because everyone knows what will happen and seem to be OK with it. Next case.
There's a box of Twinkies in that grocery store. Not just any box of Twinkies, the last box of Twinkies that anyone will enjoy in the whole universe. Believe it or not, Twinkies have an expiration date. Some day very soon, Life's little Twinkie gauge is gonna go... empty.
Snowballs?! Snowballs?! Where's the effing Twinkies????
Unions are the primary reason manufacturing has gone to other countries... I'd suggest that the company just move its production across the border where they don't need to deal with Unions. If the Union is stupid enough to strike knowing the the company will go under then there not worth employing.
This is like voting for Obama. I can understand the greedy union leaders fighting to get their way. I can not understand the other workers who will lose their jobs, kill off another US product, and have no income to feed their families. The people in the union should be able to see where their union leaders have taken them, at this point.
a message to the union in the words of marie antionette "Let them eat Twinkies"
Let's see...
Company is going bankrupt. They want to restructure thier union labor contract to help keep the company open.
The union says, "Hey, if you try to take away ANY of our benefits, we will strike and NOT work for you."
So, instead the company keeps the labor contract in tact, runs out of operating capital and then has to close and everyone in the union is out of a job.
Way to go union.
Most union members believe they work for their unions and not the company therefore they have a sense of entitlement. Unions would rather a company fold and go under than give any ground. Look at the old Consolidated Freightways (CF). They went under because of union labor costs while their non-union company (Con-Way) is thriving and the employees make a good wage and have very good benefits.
Even if the company went under, it could sell the rights off to another maker...
Yeah, but thousands of people would be out of a job.
Corporate, CEO's, Teamsters, Unions, I just don't see the difference between them, just different shades of gray. Just like politicians regardless of what party they've all crooked, some more than others, the only sure thing about any of these groups is there out for the big buck and the common joe will always be left with the short stick...ssdd... and life goes on........
Quick everyone rush out and buy cases of twinkies lots of them and remember they last forever and never go bad
That's because they're crap to begin with!
This urban legend is false, although Twinkies can last a relatively long time (25 days or more) because they are made without unstabilized dairy products and thus spoil more slowly than most bakery items. In reality Twinkies are on the shelf for a short time, a company executive told the New York Times in 2000 that the "Twinkie is on the shelf no more than 7 to 10 days."
What are we all going to eat after the Apocalypse now?
Little Debbies. They are non-union.
Can you deep fry a Little Debbie?
No loss if there are no more Twinkees to help fatten kids up with. I hope the unions prevail in court on this one and if they don't, then STRIKE! If it puts them out of business, then so be it. Companies need to stop stepping on their employees.
If you don't like your job, then find another one. If a company can't keep people in their jobs, they'll change their working conditions or go under.
If a company won't treat their employees fairly, then they don't deserve to be in business.
Spoken like a true union DORK!
No little Jimmy, spoken like someone that doesn't believe companies should be allowed to walk all over people. And as someone that believes people are entitled to fair wages and benefits for the work they do. If you don't like that, then feel free to move to a third world country and work for slave wages with no benefits.
So they go on strike, forcing the company out of business. They then have no job to come back to. Brilliant strategy!
Occupy Hostess!
Hopefully it works out....I don't indulge too often, but when I do, a Chocodile hits the spot ( and little Debbie fails in comparison )
Check out our video we made about the twinkie! http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=/&gl=US#/watch?v=0-CNBoxsF6Y
I thought Twinkies were gross...until I learned you could make your own out of poundcake and banana-butter cream. Yum!
What? Why? I'm harmless. Maybe your wife would object ....
I do get a craving for the over-processed stuff once in a while, but honestly, I wouldn't get all Tallahassee from Zombieland (Woody Harrelson's character) if they were to go away.
Twinkies...please.
American tastes are so unsophisticated. You can have your twinkies right after you finish your chicken nuggets.
Yep, because only Americans eat twinkies. Bombastic simpleton! ( Is that an appropriate insult on this website without being censored? I can never be sure ).
I'd rather have a Twinkie before nuggets any day
Because everybody else in the world is so sophisticated, eh?
Oh boy, a pseudo-sophisticate ! What's next?
Would anyone really miss a Twinkie? I am sure we could get our synthetic can barely be called actual food snack from somewhere else.
Management will ship the bakeries to China. Pay a bunch of Chinamen pennies to make the Twinkies and then sell them to Americans for mega profit.
The chineese would find out about their shelf life and stock theor military with them
My Nurse Girlfriend found a fuzzy green twinkie in a very obese patient's fat fold once. She then asked "Oh, did you find that twinkie I lost?" Apparently she had dropped it about three weeks prior and couldn't find it. GF almost vomited and refuses to go near twinkies after that.
For real or are you pulling our cyber leg??
Fo' real, son. She almost gags retelling it to people.
Oh sweet baby Jesus, that is so revolting.
I thought Twinkies never went bad, though and could last forever. I feel like someone just told me there's no such thing as the Easter Bunny as well. I also work in a hospital, and yes, stories like this are disgusting, but true. However, I still am craving a twinkie. Tell your girlfriend to watch Zombieland
It probably wasn't the twinkie that went bad, but in rolls of fat, the oils from the skin provideda medium for mold. Probably the interior of the Twinkie was still edible.
Actually, Hostess wouldn't be in this mess if it weren't for the striking workers.
I'm sorry for your girlfriend, but that is funny.
Is it just me, or does it seem like both management and the union are acting like four year olds?
The union, which consist of hard working people that are sick and tired of listening to millionaires telling them what they need to do to bring this company back are not giving any more. They have given this company so much (even money that they've worked for and is taken straight out of their paychecks weekly) and they're done. And just for the record, this is the second bankruptcy that "Hostess Brands" has gone through, the first one was under the name IBC and it's not all about a Twinkie, it's about Merita, Wonder, Butternut (among other labels) bread, buns and rolls and down to earth people who have been and still are working hard to make an honest living. Four year olds? Please, maybe do some research, before bashing the union, to see just how much the working man/women has tried to help this forever sinking ship.
There's a double win here for management – They get to offshore the production to some Asian Shitehole, eliminating all that nasty stuff normally involved with a manufacturing process, like physical plant, raw materials acquisition, personnel and payroll, and lay back and skim there profit off the top. AND, they get to blame the Union Bogeyman, as if it was the Union folks that were attempting to kill the company. Pretty slick, but this is a well-worn playbook of the Opulent Minority in this country at this point. No concern for America, American jobs, and American payrolls funding the American economy and middle class capital flow and vitality. What we should do is boycott all products manufactured overseas, and cut the throats of CEO turncoats who work so hard to bring this country down.
He actually bashed both, and I like how people like you always assume the "big bad millionaires" do know work, smoke cigars by lighting up hundred dollar bills, while the union workers are working their hands to the bone. I agree with Truth's response more, in that both sides are most likely at fault
It isn't the workers but the union pukes that cause the problems. What is taken out of their paycheck is their union dues. Don't even waste our time trying to defend the teamsters. They are worse than the machinists unions.
