While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday.

It's the best kind of sticky situation - February 21 is National Sticky Bun Day!

Dessert for breakfast is never something we've shied away from, but it's even better when a celebrated pastry can double as the beginning and end of your day.

Little pieces of leavened dough are lovingly rolled with brown sugar and cinnamon tucked inside, then placed together tightly on a baking pan. The collective becomes a flat loaf of pull-apart goodness.

But if you're craving that traditional stickiness, be sure to line the pan with maple syrup, honey, nuts, sugar or butter before you place the loaf on top. Once those buns are baked, invert the loaf and all that sticky sweet goodness becomes an irresistible topping that may have you licking the pan.

Sticky  buns are credited to the Germans, and have the original moniker of "Schnecken." Lucky for us, German settlers who arrived in America during the 18th century brought sticky buns with them, and the signature treat became a part of our young cuisine landscape.

Bake up some sticky bun fun today and enjoy with a steaming hot cup of coffee, or if you're really in a pinch, grab a close cousin, such as the cinnamon roll, from your local bakery. It doesn't have to be schnecken to be sticky bun love.

I think this holiday started on the Penn State campus about 10 years ago.
