Anthony Umrani is a CNN Senior Photojournalist based in Washington, D.C. He previously wrote about the menu at the National Museum of the American Indian. February is Black History Month. February is also National Pie Month. What could one possibly have to do with the other, you might ask? Meet the bean pie - a sweet, delectable dessert made from navy beans. The bean pie is a creation born out of the strict dietary code of the Nation of Islam, a religious black nationalist and social reform movement formed in the 1930s, led by Elijah Muhammad. In his book, "How To Eat To Live," Muhammad outlined a rather detailed and sometimes peculiar set of guidelines for eating, presumably designed to improve health and prolong life. In accordance with Islamic law, pork was prohibited, but there was a list of other banned foods that could not be explained by any Islamic jurisprudence. Foods such as spinach, sweet potatoes and lima beans, which many nutritionists would agree are good healthy foods, were not allowed.
It should be noted that "God," according to the doctrines of the Nation of Islam, operated through the personage of its founder, Fard Muhammad, also known as Master Fard and W.D. Fard. By the 1970s, followers of Elijah Muhammad or Black Muslims, as they had come to be known, could be found in most major U.S. cities, especially along the East coast. It was a common site in African American communities to see men clad in suits and bow ties canvassing neighborhoods selling two items - the organization's newspaper, "Muhammad Speaks" and the bean pie. Jamal Abdus Salaam, a longtime vendor and self-proclaimed bean pie connoisseur, describes the pie as "a uniquely delicious, healthful dessert." Abdus Salaam admits that when he first heard about the bean pie forty-five years ago, he thought, "A pie with beans in it did not sound like anything I’d want to eat." That apprehension quickly faded after the first bite and now Abdus Salaam heads Akbar Distributors, which sells and distributes the pies from his home base in Washington, D.C. For others who have been brave enough to overcome the seemingly two incongruous elements, "bean" and "pie," there is often an instant love affair with the dessert. The consistency of the pie is similar to sweet potato or pumpkin pie, and some have suggested the flavor is also comparable. The pie, often made with butter, eggs, sugar and evaporated milk, may have created as a substitute for the beloved sweet potato pie, commonly found in many African American homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving. Part of the anticipation of biting into a slice of bean pie, is that it's almost impossible to know know exactly how it will taste. They aren’t typically mass-produced and there's no standardized recipe beyond some core ingredients. Many self-made home bakers add flavors for a personal touch. The bean pie can be found in a variety of forms: apple bean, cherry bean, banana bean, lemon bean and a common favorite, custard bean. As with sweet potato pie, the bean pie can be eaten cold, warm or room temperature depending on one's preference. Most mosques predominantly attended by African Americans will likely sell bean pies, or can advise where to get them. The price of the pies generally ranges from $2.50 to $3.50 a piece for the six inch variety, and about $9 for the larger nine inch version.
If one ever has the opportunity to taste a bean pie, it's worth making a connection to acquire another one in the future. There’s nothing more frustrating than needing a bean pie fix, and having no supplier. During one afternoon after Friday prayers, two customers approached Abdus Salaam’s vending table outside Masjid Muhammad, a local mosque in Washington, DC, to purchase some pies. Hasan Jackson and wife Zainab eyeballed the many choices spread across the six-foot-long table. He grew up eating the pies and remembers his challenge as a kid was to not eat the entire thing. Zainab, who was born in Sudan and raised in Saudi Arabia, had been waiting for a bean pie "expert" to introduce her to the pie. Jackson was the man for that job. He gave her a quick lesson and strongly recommended that she try the traditional bean pie, with no added flavors. Jackson's parents told him about the significance of the bean pie to the African American Muslim community. “It’s part of who you are," they said. He laughs as he recalls those days. "For me, it just meant dig in." Read - Belief Blog and In America |

NOI is not Real islam–they don't even follow the quran DO NOT confuse the two they are very different!
I think that the bean pie played a major role in transitioning the African American consumer in particular and many others in general into the world of health food and natural living. Just a thought , not a khutbar.

Years ago, I tried to buy a bean pie from a bow tie guy on the corner by Lexington Market in Baltimore, bow tie guy gave me an evil look and turned away. I had no idea it was a most sanctimonious racial dessert. I just wanted to try it.
May I say my apologies.....I may not have been that person you are speaken about but we are all representations. Please forgive for we all are only human and are sinners. I am Jewish and my family misses the bean pie. Yes there are Jews for Farrakhan. Nonetheless, If you haven't tasted the creamy bean pie then you have missed out on history. The navy bean has a natural chemical that defends itself against cancer.
Yummy Yummy Yummy , I got bean pie!
"Yes there are Jews for Farrakhan." Are they insane?
This is what happens when one guy makes up a new religion.
That people argue over bean pies?
For the record, The Honorable Elijah Muhammad did not make up any religion. The Nation of Islam teaches the Old Time Religion, which was the first Religious Creed given unto mankind. Contrary to poplar belief, Islam was not started or invented by Prophet Muhammad ( PBUH ), he only transliterated the Ancient Kemetian(Egyptian) Mystery System = Hotep (Peace) into the Arabic language for his paganistic Nationals in Arabia. The Angel Gabriel, an Egyptian Adept Master took 23 years to teach the Science of Holistic Peace to Prophet Muhammad.
Never expected to see an article about the amazing Black Muslim Bean Pie! When I ran a large natural foods store in Berkeley, California, the vendors I was happiest see come into the store were the white-uniformed guys from the Betty Shabazz Bakery, purveyors of the Bean Pies. They would always make sure they had at least one large one for me. If you have never tasted the Bean Pie, you have missed something. Kinda like pumpkin pie, but smoother and creamier. Yum! So next time you are in one of America's urban centers, look for the Black Muslim Bean Pies at a neighborhood market, natural foods store, or one of the few Shabazz Bakeries. (Betty Shabazz was Elijah Muhammed's wife.) Yeah, I know it's the Black Muslims, but, hey, the pies are great. They were always nice to me.
Betty Shabazz was the wife of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz formally known as Malcom X
Thank you for the correction. That's what I get from operating off perceived memory.
your info is wrong Betty Shabazz was Malcolm X wife not Elijah Muhammad wife
Hello!!
I made the bean pie for the first time November 24, 2012. It came out great, but my pie wasn't brown brown on top.
What did I do wrong? Can you help me?
HAVE A BLESSED AND SAFE DAY!

I feel like I just woke up in an alternate universe. Did I really just read this? Did CNN really publish a lighthearted piece advising us to go and make contact with a violent racist hate group so that we can sample their tasty dessert? Should I also look up where my local Nazi party chapter meets, so that I can drop by and try their sauerkraut?
Seriously, CNN, this is disgusting. Get rid of it and apologize for your mistake.
where in the article does it instruct anyone "to go and make contact with a violent racist hate group so that we can sample their tasty dessert?"
Hear, hear!
Lol you don't complain when you go to the supermarket and buy death 24/7 you got better chances coming to us and recieving food for your life than to trust your evil ignorant govenment. Oh and btw we're violent? We are not the ones that kill off people who are for the better of the world like your awesome government, just saying.
they have no need to apologize for anything, steve. it is about a pie.
I am sure there are KKK members out there who make a good barbecue...or there is great corned beef at IRA gatherings...but I think I will pass on food served with a side of HATE.
When I lived in Newark, NJ in the 60s, bean pies were 25 cents and man, were they good! Haven't had one in years.
Muslim Bean Pie recipe
By Sonsyrea Tate Montgomery · 7 seconds ago
Here is the bean pie recipe bequethed to me by my dear GrandWillie, who had joined the NOI in the 1950s. She left me a folder of NOI "lessons", including this recipe for bean pie and one for bean soup. I may even try my hand at it one of these days. If you try to make it, let us know how it went.
Bean Pie Recipe
1 cup strained beans
1½ cups sugar
Alisha
For anyone interested, here is the recipe. It is a delicious pie.

1 cup evaporated milk
2 cups cooked navy beans (mashed & pushed thru sieve to remove any skins if desired)
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 tsp saltshopping list
1/2 tsp fresh ground ginger
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp ground cloves
How to make it

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Combine the eggs and evaporated milk in a bowl.

This article made me laugh. Really scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Wait a minute, CNN is putting a pie recipe up here from a CULT that thinks God is going to blow all the white people up with spaceships that are in orbit with a mother ship right this moment? Guys, do some research about this group please, you are insulting me and embarrassing yourselves. I just can't wrap my head around the idea you'd support a group that advocates GENOCIDE because they made a pie! How about Nazi pie next week?
Muslim pie? Does it blow itself up?
It'll blow up your waist line. *rimshot*
i had some sacramental wine....it was so authentic, i fondled myself
Food for Life Supreme in Suitland, Maryland, have the BEST navy bean and butternut squash pies I have ever tasted. They also have great food!!
they are soooo good, but again depends on where in the country you get them, im in the midwest and im christian but i personally know some muslims (black) dont have to be part of their belief to try new things out.
Where's the recipe? i want to try it. BTW, Elijah Muhammad is a silly racist.
That bean pie is the absolutely bomb...the military used these beans for their personell to help ward off the effects of radiation, hence the name "navy" beans. The bean has many other uses, but I think the pie is one of the best recipes!! Everyone is welcome to try it!!! Secondly, what is racist about teaching black people to love themselves before they love anybody else? Who taught us to hate ourselves... the white man, of course. Now you want to cry fowl b/c the tables have been turned. Your own scientist have told you that the white race is only 6,000 years old, and that the cradle of civilization is in Africa...so don't get mad at the Nation for pointing out what is true. There are so many companies that have their root in the Black slave trade in this country, it's not even funny. They are the real racists. They are the ones ripping you off left and right, they are the ones selling you out.
Most of these idiots do not even desire to know the truth ; they are comfortable in their own blindness and hatred, which they are attempting to project on The Nation of Islam. The fact that they even try to compare The Nation of Islam to KKK or Nazis betrays their compounded ignorance, discredits their judgement and makes their opinions devaluable. Trying to defend against their ignorant ideas and clarify truth to them only make them dig deeper into their pit of ignorance where they are free to stay.
Great teaching, Camisha!!!
Sounds to me Elijah Muhammad simply made a list of things he didn't like as a kid and, "poof", instant "dietary law". Apparently "nuts" aren't disallowed in the Nation of Islam.
or any religion
@Zee-You can't separate the Bean Pie from the N.O.I. It's creation was the direct result of the dietary restrictions of the group. It wouldn't make sense to not mention the history of the pie. I'm willing to bet that some of the families that started major food companies have racist pasts, we just don't know about it. As I stated, many african americans that came out of the N.O.I. have changed their views and embraced traditional Islamic views, just as Malcolm did. They took the tradition of the bean pie with them. Do you have a problem with them too? The article does not promote the N.O.I. it just tells where the tradition and history of the pie comes from.
"As I stated, many african americans that came out of the N.O.I. have changed their views and embraced traditional Islamic views, just as Malcolm did." Then the article needs to be clear about that. Any organization whose roots were so recently rooted in such erroneous and hateful beliefs owes it in the name of peace, respect, and decency to make a point of clarifying their current stance, rather than blithely chirping about Pie.
Traditional Islamic views like what?
So is it okay for the white devil slave master to eat a bean pie? I went up to a N.O.I. member outside of a quick stop who was selling bean pies and newspapers and was refused the option to buy either one.
Liar.
If this had been an article by an organization run by white people who advocate hate against minorities and whose philosophy considers non-white people to be the evil product of a nefarious scientist's experiment, there would be no article. The nation of islam is a racist, hate mongering organization. It assasinated Malcolm X after he began to recant his former position that the "white man is the devil" and when he separated himself from the Nation after he refused to lie to cover up affairs the leader was having with his secretaries. Don't believe me? Read Malcolm X's autobiography. The bean pie recipe simply could have been shared as a recipe in celebration of Black History Month, without attaching it to the Nation of Islam – which, as I have already emphasized is a RACIST hate group. Maybe next month we can be treated to a recipe from an american n a z i potluck?
I can not wait to see Taliban Jello next month.... Why is CNN sponsoring a hate group, if anyone wants a recipe for KKK blood of a minority roasted duck let me know!
That's just stupid...
I can't believe it wasn't made with Black-eyed peas!
Sarah Palin has a great recipe for cow-pie pie.
@xab- You aren't giving money to the N.O.I. just because you are buying a bean pie. There are many african american muslims who are not in the N.O.I. who bake and/or sell bean pies. Or you can look up a recipe and bake one yourself. If you want to make a principled stand against a pie, so be it.
I don't care how tasty the bean pie is, I'd never give to an organization that has been categorized as a hate/racist organization. What's next, an article on the deliciousness of Fred Phelps' oatmeal raisin cookies?
My own opinon of the NOI notwithstanding, try relying on your own assessments of a group rather than the "categorizations" of self-appointed busybodies like the ADL and SPLC.
Bu, bu, bu, but that means I have to think for myself!
*cue music*
dun, dun, duuuuuuuuuun.
For anyone interested, here is the recipe. It is a delicious pie.
SWEET BEAN PIE

Hmmm....the Nation is not a hate organization. However, if you feel the same way about the Tparty and don't buy their T-shirts and foods, then you're an equal opportunity opinionator.
CNN should really lose a lot of respect for this... There are thousands of great African American societies they can sponsor for them to lump everyone together with a group that sponsors hate and radical ideas is ridiculous. I wonder if CNN will sponsor the Nazi party and group all members of German descent.
And just how did they lump together other "African American societies"?
I'm willing to bet that Hussein/Ali and Shana arent muslims at all lol.
And Nation of Islam and Islam are too different entitys people so you can stop your pie holes (pun intended) and bring your attention back to what the article is really about.
Let's be clear here. The N.O.I. was founded in 1930 during a very overtly racist era in the US. Yes, some of the teachings were/are racist but it was a direct response to a society permeated by white supremacy, Jim Crow and lynchings going back hundreds of years. You can fault the organization as it exists today for not having a more enlightened view but 50 or more years ago, I think not. The 1959 CBS News documentary had it right when they made the film, "The Hate That Hate Produced". The N.O.I. was not created in a vacuum. There's a context and a history. A society can't perpetrate heinous acts upon a people for hundreds of years and not expect groups to spring up like the N.O.I.
This is not comparable to the KKK, Hitler or any other hateful group or person. Do some thorough research before making those comparisons.
That said, we are talking about a pie here. If we protested all food based on it's history, we'd probably starve to death.
There are important differences between the N.O.I. and Islam that most other Muslims practice but this article is about a desert and how it came about. Nothing more.
This is a very nice article inregards to bean pies and Black History Month. Also, I have met Jamal Abdus Saalam. He is a very respectful man and his bean pies are to die for. He even has a blueberry and banana nut bread one which is delicious! I invite you all to try something different you might be surprised. Lets do away with hatred and try to show a little respect and dignity to our fellow man. Tomorrow is not promised, so live the best life today while you still have a chance. God Bless you!
This is surely one of the best responses I have read. Thank you so much Ms. Jones
Does anybody know just how hateful this organization is to white people. Just do some reading, you will see the same hatred the KKK had for blacks is also within the Nation of Islam.
Why is it okay at CNN to be a racist that hates white people.
How is CNN being racist to white people? Because they talk about a bean pie? Paranoid much?
Please do some homework before replying in such a manner. Learn how to use Google, for goodness sake.
Marie: The question stands. How is this evidence of CNN being racist to white people?
Really, Marie...are you going to answer?
I think she was replying to the guy above you...
kwd: marie used the term "reply" when she replied to my post. she did not reply to andrew's post
Except the Nation of Islam never hung, killed, burnt something in some ones yard and raped nobody.
They're modern racists and anti-Semites. The NOI does look funny in their bow ties, so they're always good for a laugh.
Please say this one more time just in case the people missed it! Gheeez!
They shot Malcolm X.
Racial self-hatred?
What about the Ku Klux Klan recipes?
Why would you even put an article of such as this with the NOI being such a racist cult? What next, KKK muffins?????
gee, anthony, who pi$$ed in your cornflakes this morning. it is about food in conjuction with black history month. whatever burr is up your rectum over this should pass by now
When is Latino history month? Caucasian history month? Asian history month? Native American history month? Oh, that's right only blacks need a history month so they can feel good about themselves.
T: I don't know who else has a month. The Irish have a parade. The point was that this is about a pie, not about pushing islam on people.

And bean pies are dam delicious! Go try one!
I always liked the taste of bean pie from the first time I tried it. A lot of sweet desserts are made from beans. Chocolate might be the most popular in the U.S. Coffee is made with beans also.
This cookbook has the bean pie recipe.

Thank you. I appreciate this.
I am a muslim girl and I will not marry a muslim because of how you treat your women. It is a Christian for me, they treat their women as equals and I will let my hair fly behind me. To cover it is not honoring Allah in any way. Just so you men know, we muslim girls are far smarter than you give us credit for.
Do you not think the Prophet suffered frostbite when he had to fly a horse thru outer space to get to Allah's kingdom? Perhaps the cold and lack of oxygen affected his brain, so therefore we can't hold him responsible for what he did to this child?
Do not say the Prophet Muhammad was married to a 6 year old if you will not note that he waited until she was 9 before he consummated the marriage. The Prophet was only 56 years old, so it was not so wrong.
why don't you make it 2 years old!!
idiot, where do you get your info from??from trash?
Damn. Now I'm jonesin' for a bean pie without anywhere to get one within probably 700 miles.
BTW, with the sole exception of the fava bean, ALL beans are of South American origin and would have been totally unknown in the Middle East before 1500.
Mr. Clark are you saying that Columbus was the only person who sailed from Africa to America. Mr. Columbus picked up some African sailors from Ghana to show him the way to America. American people are the most ignorant people on earth. They even believe that the world is only 6,000 years old.
you guys are nuts
I like bbq pork ribs with my baked beans and cole slaw.
@Gimme a break – Please go to Moma Anie's restaurant and have a nice BPQ pork plate and when done eating, stop by and get your self a Sweet Bean Pie . PEACE OUT !
I'd love the recipe. Anyone have an idea how to make a good Bean Pie? Alas, no place to try one near me.
no kidding. An article about a specific pie and no recipe attached? what gives?
Yup. And you can get some wonderful iced-bea dessert treats in a Korean market, too!
Vietnamese and other Southeast Asians have several sweet bean deserts, and there is even a bean soft drink.
I must admit that I used to frequent the Black Muslim bakery in Oakland CA, but I had to dodge the anti-semitic posters to order my food.
Islams pie? Have you tried the jewish noodle koogle or the christian holy water lemon soda? Why does the religion have to be in it? Stop pushing Islam on us!!!!!!!!!!!!! And truefax....you're a clown. Islam is islam. They follow the same book. Was that slow enough for you?
Didn't bother reading the article, did you? The pie is one that was discussed in a book by the founder of the Nation of Islam. The pie was invented to go along with Nation of Islam dietary guidelines. But then, why do I bother explaining – I'm guessing you don't know the difference between Islam and the Nation of Islam.
How is this pushing Islam on anyone?
The staple of the Christian diet seems to be pork..no thanks! Our dietary law is actually closer to the Jewish diet....everything Kosher!
i am vegan, so i guess i am both kosher and halal (well, halal other than alcohol)
Way to generalize Camisha. I'm Christian and I haven't had pork in decades. Chicken & beef ATW. Try again.
I'm a white, southern, Christian. In other words the last guy you'd think would be a bean pie connoisseur, but I used to pick up a bean pie and a copy of "Final Call" once a week from the same guy standing on a street corner near NC A&T University. The pie helped make the articles in the "Final Call" a little easier to swallow, LOL. Dang good pie!
Those bean pies are wonderful!
Dear KC. How are you? I am that guy from whom you bought that pie and I am still singing my bean pie songs. (smile)
Loved your honesty. Yea Man, Food has no problem going down. . It' may be a problem coming out. To say that is to say, what we do with the food (word) and how it reacts in our system ( lives) and how bring it to reality is the best way to honor what went in and if any of it digested (stuck)! Seems you liked it. Peace
The Nation of Islam is a racist organization. Why the hell is CNN posting recipes from a racist organization?
what recipe? There is an article about the pie, but no recipe. Take your hatemontering elsewhere, bigot.
Um, actually it was the Southern Poverty Law Center that labeled the Nation of Islam a racist organization. Does that make the SPLC a group of hate mongers as well?
Nation of Islam is a racist org. Your the person filled with hate if you agree with Nation of Islam LilCoffinHunter. You hate white people.
Andrew: Where did he or she say she agreed with the NOI? Gosh, are a paranoid little troll, aren't you?
@CNN-Aljazeera Merger – we are talking about food here, not politics. For heaven sake, take your political opinion somewhere else.
Perhaps everyone doesn't agree with your sentiment...
For my money the former Shabazz Bakery on MLK Ave. had the absolute best Bean Pie as far as taste and texture. The Baker At the time was extremely humble and would always ask Allah to guide him
Which MLK Ave? I think there's an MLK Ave/Blvd/St in every American city of medium size or larger.
Why are we promoting the creation of an incredibly racist group on CNN?
Well, CNN "supports" the Republican Party doesn't it? If that isn't an "incredibly racist group" I don't know what is. The article is about the Bean Pie, nothing more, nothing less.
Amen to that!
"Supports the Republican party"? Is this your first time to visit this site?? That's like saying Fox News supports the Democrats.
We're not Bill. It's about food.
it's about a pie, bill. go scratch yourself somewhere else
Just so you know, the Nation was founded in the 1930's...so, it's not going anywhere, even though they, meaning CIA and FBI, have tried to destroy it.
Ok we'll go through this slowly... Nation of Islam doesn't have anything to do with the Middle East Islam, they are NOT the same and any person with a bit of understanding knows this, so the fact that they have differant dietary regulations isn't supprising.
Secondly there are many bean based sweets, not just this pie. They are eaten all over the world, and especially in Asia, so yeah again the authors supprise over a bean dessert is more a reflection of the author's ignorance.
Where does the author show "surprise?"
I am not sure where your what seems to be bitterness comes from...I don't think the author of this article was trying to pit one sect of Islam against the other. Maybe you didn't read the same article I did.
Me thinks there could be a bit of transference going on with trollfax. Maybe instead there should be some self-reflection.
You might need to do some research Minister Farrakhan has made several World Friendship tours in the Middle East and was received as a head of state including Saudi Arabia Mecca.
