Southern celebrity chef Paula Deen appeared on the Today Show with Al Roker this morning to address rumors that she has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Deen confirmed, "I was diagnosed three years ago during a regular physical exam with my doctor, that I had type 2 diabetes. I am here today to let the world know that it is not a death sentence. I am working with a very reputable pharmaceutical company. I'm working on a new program called 'Diabetes in a New Light.' You can go to our website. I'm going to be there for you and help you manage every day of your life with this, because it can be done." The chef, who has come under fire in recent years for the unhealthy nature of many of her recipes, also announced that she is working as a paid spokesperson for the drug company Novo Nordisk, which manufactures Victoza - an injectable, non-insulin drug used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Asked by Roker why she took such a long time to come forward with news of her diagnosis, Deen responded that after she informed her immediate family, she wanted to keep the information private for a while because she, "Had nothing to give to my fellow friends out there." She continued, "People are not going to quit eating...I wanted to bring something to the table." While Deen admitted that diet is a factor in the development of the disease, saying it's "part of the puzzle," she also cited genetics, lifestyle, stress and age as factors. Her goal with the new website, she says is, "To make you still feel like you're having a full life, without feeling like you're being punished or not being able to taste the wonderful flavors that you like." Deen deflected criticism of her fat and sugar-centric cooking, saying that on her show, she preaches a message of moderation and has not had to change the way she eats because she follows that directive herself. Of the show's signature cuisine she says, "It's entertainment...I'm your cook, not your doctor," and notes on her website that moving forward, many of her recipes will include a "lighter touch." About 26 million people in the United States have diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC estimates another 79 million Americans over age 20 have pre-diabetes, or elevated glucose levels. There are two major forms of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 2 is the most common. Type 2 is often called adult-onset diabetes because it develops over time due to low activity levels and a poor diet that causes excess body weight. Diabetes can lead to kidney failure, blindness, lower limb amputations, heart disease and stroke. It is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, according to the CDC. I'm sad for Paula, but not all that surprised. Maybe she should look into a healthier diet to treat her diabetes instead of drugs? There's lots of interesting information available at this noncommercial, science based site (nutritionfacts.org). To quote the good doctor: "It is too bad Paula Deen missed this opportunity" to tell her fans "that type 2 diabetes can be prevented, managed, treated, and even cured". Read more at http://nutritionfacts.org/blog/2012/01/18/paula-deen-diabetes-drug-spokesperson/
Her medical condition is no more or less private than y'alls. Go suck on a big o stick of butter, beotchez!
Yeah suck up that butter so that the rest of us can keep subsidizing your health insurance.
I'm sure her reason not to tell the truth 3 years ago was all about the money. The same applies to her being a spokesperson for Novo.....She sure loves dem $$$$$
I am type 2 and I am not sure what to think. I have done a overhaul on my own lifestyle and it's been really hard to change. I met a lady on line named Jill Knapp who has helped me get my life under control with this disease. . Jill lost 100 pounds after her diagnosis some years ago. Jill diabetes advocate has said nothing so far. I am waiting to hear her feeling about Paula. Jill has been a strong example to me setting a great example.
Paula Deen, the stroke belt queen!
Jayzus H Krist, why don't you give it a rest you Ricky Ricardo wannabe.
Not just strokes but heart attacks and type 2 diabetes.
I wonder how many thousands of people would not be sick today if they ever heard of Paula Deen or her unhealthy food???
All she cares about is making money.
I hope they make her take the drug she will be selling.
That way when it turns out bad like Avandia she will get sick just like all the idiots who take whatever drug she sells just because of her endorsement.
Sorry for the typo I meant Never heard of Paula Deen or her unhealthy food.
Plus she lied for 3 years about being a diabetic.
Fail.
She did not lie.
LMAO! Dayum, you sure have a high opinion of yourself! You think everyone is buying her stuff and using her recipes just because she endorses them? Eff off!
So, why should the rest of us care? I find it quite interesting that she claims to have been diagnosed 3 years ago. So, she wasn't going to say anything until she had a deal with a pharmaceutical company? Sounds like was trying to hide it until she figured out to make money off it.
You nailed it. No reason for her to ever mention it until a drug company waved some money in front of her.
Ramsen, you got it right. She figured out two ways to make money from her contrived inconvenience. A primo drug company deal and ...
.... alvord, there is one other reason: her son just released a cookbook that offers healthy versions of her recipes. The cookbook plan parallels what Graham Kerr, The Galloping Gourmet, did years ago.
Not to mention his new show on Cooking Channel, where he takes Paula's recipes and lightens them up. I think it's called "My Momma's Coattails" or something like that...
I think this is going to be bad for her career. I am sure she was advised to try and blow it off and down play it from her advisers. With the rates of obesity and obesity related diseases going up and statistics indicating that they are linked to early death. I feel it is a bad move to try and down play it. I think she should have taken a more moderate approach by publicly admitting that she is going to decrease the amount of sugar and fat she uses in her cookbooks and on her show. I for one am disappointed that she is going to be a spokeswomen for a diabetic drug when reasearch has shown it can be controlled with diet and exercise. I wish Paula luck and hope she has saved some of the money she has made.
And yes, Diabetes can be genetic. All of my Grandparents have it. But, that does stop me from watching my sugar content and exercising. It is a lot easier and cheaper to change your diet and get a walk in than it does to check your blood sugar and take meds. I for one do not agree that she is going to be advocating drug therapy and not make a significant effort to change her diet and exercise routine. I think it is irresponsible.
It's quite refreshing to hear others responses concerning Deen's irresponsible approach to this issue. Many of us understand that we are in control of our health and certainly do not want drugs to dictate our lives. When one has diabetes, one changes their eating habits! Thanks, all of you who realize she is very careless in her approach toward food. And rather than working with her disease by changing her diet, she has chose to take the pharmecutical route. I don't watch her show, but I'm quite appalled that she continued to share food in such an reckless fashion.
Diabetes is reversible....yes that is what I have read.
Dr Neal Barnard, MD author of Eat Right Live Longer and Food For Life....explains how good healthy nutrition can reverse diabetes.
Most times when a person claims genetics .....it is because there is a history of POOR nutrition and so bad nutrition habits are what is passed down generation to generation.
Type 1 diabetes is certainly not reversible. People like me cannot live without insulin. We are "insulin dependent" type 1 diabetics. Big difference.
You read it on the internet it must be true, right?
controlable, yes, curable no.
Believe me, I wish it was curable. I've reticently been diagnosed with type 2.
It's interesting to see that there are so many non-judgemental people that seem to know all about how everyone should live, eat or exist for the greater good of all mankind, but seem to be glued to thier internet info – shouldn't you all be out jogging or at an abortion protest rally somewhere??
Paula Deen isn't seeking a presidential nomination-be more concerned with the future of the U.S.A.-not the future of her health-that's no ones concern but her family and herself!!
Amen!
Your high horsedness reminds me about a saying.
Something abut a pot and a kettle and the color black.
why don't you stop talking trash about other people online and go get some exercise?
I am not judging her .... yes I do run ...... and no I do not attend abortion rallies.
What concerns me is that she is not taking her diagnosis seriously enough. She is really trying to blow it off by saying "It's not a death sentence Ya All". Well eventually it will be. Once she gets diabetic neuropathy from not controlling her diabetes properly. She might cut her feet on something, but won't be able to feel them or even see the cut because she has diabetic retinopathy. Then her feet will get infected and she might have to have them amputated because diabetic don't heal well or fast because that is a effect of the disease. This will make her immobile and bed ridden and will increase her chances of getting bed sores because she won't be able to feel herself due to her neuropathy. Bed sore always get infected and more than likely will cause a systemic infection called septicemia. Then she'll be sick as Sh%* and suffer and then she'll die from an over whelming infection. So, YES it is a death sentence not today but someday Ya All!
Wouldn't it be easier to cut the fat and sugar out of her diet and then start walking with her sweet and wonderful family. Just putting that out there!
She will take it seriously when she loses a foot or leg or gets some other horrible thing that type 2 diabetics have to be afraid of.
No, we're just criticising people that encourage behaviors that drive up our health insurance costs, because the people who indulge in them get lumped in with the rest of us when the bean counters draw the line, and we get to pay for part of their bad habits.
I'm disappointed that the article focused more on using pharmaceuticals to manage the disease rather than making huge life style changes. Society needs to stop with this mind set- health issues? Just take a pill don't take responsibility.
oink, oink
Sorry Paula... Trying to blame it as "Part of the puzzle" is complete horse puckey. Stress, nope. Genetics, not-so-much. Lifestyle... now you got it! Type 2 diabetes is primarily an indication that you are severely unhealthy! Crap for breakfast, lunch and dinner without any exercise will likely lead you into adult onset diabetes! Stop blaming all the outside influences and admit that your lifestyle is the only factor that led you there. Once you have accepted that, perhaps you could be a role-model for the 30 percent o overweight Americans that need someone to help them with eating issues. But, no... you blame genetics. I wish I could throw a frozen turkey at you right now.
If you don't like it don't eat it. If people would stop placing so much importance on eating this wouldn't be a problem. Yes it's important to eat healthy but you can enjoy an unhealthy meal once a week and be fine. Moderation in all things. Even good things can be over done.
I heard her say on her show this week that she gets nervous if she has less than 2 pounds of butter in the refrigerator.
You are what you eat...I guess we know what Paula is.
Angela, tell that to the sweaty 35 year-old, 350 pound porkers who hog the expectant mother parking spaces and the electric handicap buggies at the Walmarts here in Georgia, because they have neither the willpower nor the self-respect to keep their lifestyles in trim.
Go eat some grass you ridiculous pole smoker.
Somehow I fail to see why this so called news is considered news. Everybody had personal health issues. What next, headlines that someone has high blood pressure? Mrs. Deen's health issues are not related to her profession, that's just a gig. And it's really none of our business. Leave her be.
It is related to her lifestyle; a big part of lifestyle is what you eat. Paula makes a living telling people what to eat; maybe they should not be listening to her and she should be more responsible.
I watch Paula, like her recipes, and have made a lot of them but in no way does she tell me what to eat. For better or worse, I'm the one who puts the fork in my mouth and I control what's on it. No one else but me. I think her health is her business, and she has never told anyone they have to eat the food she demonstrates on her show. I doubt even she eats it 24/7. The problem with looking to celebrities to be your role model – and she never claimed to be anyone's role model – is that they will ALWAYS let you down. Don't do it!
If someone was considered the "King of Salt" and developed hypertension it would be.
I am not a fan of her show but I don't understand why people are trashing her. Dr. Atkins went on his own diet and died from heart disease.
Dr. Atkins died because he slipped on some ice and cracked his head. It had nothing to do with heart disease.
Bingo!
Can you say "I'm a moron" ? Fcktard. Lol. Where do you get your news? From the national enquirer?
Cornholio, wrong info.
So now it's Paula Dean's responsibility to warn us that deep fried twinkies are bad for your health. Gimme a break...use some common sense and stop blaming everybody else for your bad decisions. Dean's diagnosis is none of our business.
To say "it's not a death sentence" is just wrong. Not only is it a death sentence, it's a slow, horrible one. Type 2 diabetes is the leading cause of blindness. Your kidneys fail, essentially leaving your body to circulate poisoned blood. You get diabetic neuropathy, and wounds on your limbs won't heal. Then they rot off your body (necrosis) until amputation is the only option. Oh, and pulmonary and cardiovascular issues plague you-congestive heart failure is way more likely to happen while you're busy eating and scarring up your kidneys. Next, it's time for dialysis and sitting on a transplant list...all because you don't want to put the fork down. IT'S NOT GENETIC. IT'S A CHOICE. IT'S LIFESTYLE AND EATING. To minimize it like it's some condition you "have" to live with is part of what's wrong with our nation AND what's driving up healthcare costs.
Paula Deen's ignorance is a real flaw and a real danger to people that don't know any better.
TRUE!
FALSE! Once again, go eff yourself!
It's about time people woke up and realized that the former Galloping Gourmet Graham Kerr really knows what he's talking about. Paula Deen needs to take a page from his book (s). we are ALL responsible for whatever goes into our mouths.
Paula Deen is like millions of Americans who are over weight and diabetic. Rather than lose weight they take medications to control their blood/sugar (and possibly statin drugs). They love food so much that they would rather take drugs than change their eating habits. They have this false sense of security that a doctor is treating them and therefore they are taking care of themselves. Should every cook on TV only make low-carb diets? No! Mrs. Deen is responsible for what she eats just as everyone else is. Her obesity is her own fault but she cannot be blamed for what others eat, just as fast food restaurants cannot be held responsible. If your over weight more than like it is your own fault.

These sources changed my health forever for the better. They can do the same for anyone. My doctor is 100% satisfied with my progress. I have done everything under his strict supervision. I haven't been this healthy since my teens.
Bottom line, you either want to get healthy and you will, or you don't and you won't. Either way, all I can do is show you the door, you must walk through it on your own. Please choose wisely.
Dear Paula,
A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down.
Sorry, I just couldn't resist....
The drug she recommend cause Thyroidal cancer. I cannot believe someone will recommend a drug without pointing to MAJOR side effects.
From the drug insert by the FDA regulation:
In the clinical trials, there have been 4 reported cases of thyroid C-cell hyperplasia among Victoza-treated patients and 1 case in a comparator-treated patient (1.3 vs. 0.6 cases per 1000 patient-years). One additional case of thyroid C-cell hyperplasia in a Victoza-treated patient and 1 case of MTC in a comparator-treated patient have subsequently been reported. This comparator-treated patient with MTC had pre-treatment serum calcitonin concentrations >1000 ng/L suggesting pre-existing disease. All of these cases were diagnosed after thyroidectomy, which was prompted by abnormal results on routine, protocol-specified measurements of serum calcitonin. Four of the five liraglutide-treated patients had elevated calcitonin concentrations at baseline and throughout the trial. One liraglutide and one non-liraglutide-treated patient developed elevated calcitonin concentrations while on treatment
The thyroid cancer was in rats with no link to humans. And a very small percentage compared to the population that it could help.
I am working for a company that has a food supplement that is FDA registered that BLOCKS carbohydrates from turning into sugar in the bloodstream. It is 100% safe nontoxic and very very effective. More effective than what she is endorsing. Our product is SAFE. No side effects. It is a product she should be endorsing. Look it up. It will truly help people. SugarDown.
surprise, surprise. look at what she eats. she should be admitting how detrimental what she cooks and eats can be, but she knows that she cannot do that and still sell her cookbooks, etc.
She is a disingenuous, dishonest, hypocritical money grabber who is only now coming out about her condition to further capitalize by shilling for a drug company. She could have been helping other victims for years, but instead chose to take the low road and promote a diet that is exactly the opposite of what folks in her condition should be eating. She does not merit our attention any further....
You're about 1,131 comments too late.
I think her shows, and all food network shows should have to list the caloric breakdown of all the stuff they are pushing. I mean, if a restaurant has to do it, so should these networks.
Better yet, people should take responsibility for themselves and do their own research rather than just blindly following the words of some dolt on TV.
Well genius, tell us how to research what Paula shows on her program. All she provides is how yummy it is.
When a recipe starts with a stick of butter and a cup of sour cream, I don't need a number to tell me if it's healthy. And the same goes for a cheeseburger and fries.
Butter and full fat sour cream are not bad for you. Fires and the bun from the cheeseburger are. I get over half of my calories from saturated fat which is the fuel your body, especially the brain, really desires.
Bottom line, stop eating grains, white potatoes, beans, legumes, pasta, rice, and you will not get type 2 diabetes. You will lose weight without effort. Your blood pressure will naturally lower to correct levels. You will have energy you haven't had in years.
Don;t believe me? I was on statin, bp med, and prilosec. I am now off of all of them. I was 220 and the doc wanted to give me more meds. I now weigh 185. I have the energy levels of my 20's.
Still don't believe me? Go visit MarksDailyApple for more information on the healthiest lifestyle available. See the forums before and after section. If that doesn't convince you, nothing will.
Bottom line, you aren't a doctor and you shouldn't be posting stupid, vague advice on how to avoid getting diabetes unless you know what you're talking about.
I was pre-diabetic and live by the Primal/Paleo lifestyle! Now let me emphasize I WAS! My glucose was 120 and went down to 81. I no longer have diabetic symptoms. Diabetes type 2 is reversible!
I do know what I am talking about. Been studying the topic for many, many, years. Everything I have said is 100% accurate.
I could not care less if you choose to remain ignorant though. Either way I will always be making these kinds of posts on these kinds of articles for the rest of my life.
Basically, your right although I'd remove legumes from your list.
No can do, they are firmly entrenched on the no no list. You can eat them, I won't.
Well Primal, I applaud your tenacity, however... Beans are legumes and furthermore, pasta is made from grains (quite redundant, I must say...) My questions for you are, where do you get your fiber and how can you argue that animal based saturated fats are not unhealthy? Last I checked cholesterol wreaks havoc on the body and is found in animal based fats.
The "last you checked" is outdated and invalid information. Dietary cholesterol has virtually zero effect on blood cholesterol levels. And there has actually never been a study proving saturated fat as "bad", in fact, more recent studies are relabeling it as an essential fat.
You're still stuck in the "eggs are bad, margarine is healthy" mindset from 20 years ago that we now know is all wrong.
A lot of people on here are downplaying the role of lifestyle on Type 2 diabetes. While I'm sure there are some other factors, to deny that a PRIMARY cause of the disease in this country is poor diet and lack of exercise is just foolish, especially in this case, where a large part of the discussion centers around the peddling of deep fried cheesecake. There simply is no doubt that obesity and being sedentary is killing Americans. To hedge around that fact or deny it outright diminishes the message of getting healthy. We need to stop making excuses for our terrible habits and looking for pharmaceutical solutions for what needs to be a lifestyle overhaul.
I'm amazed at how many people are using one person's lifestyle and questionable scruples to berate an entire region. Painting several hundred thousand people with the same brush and labeling everyone south of the Mason-Dixon as "rednecks" and "white trash" is ignorant and hateful. All you're doing is perpetuating lame, tired stereotypes. Living in a certain city or state doesn't make you anything but a resident of that city and state. According to the comments I'm seeing here, by living in Mississippi I should be barefoot in the front yard, riding my hogs and feeding my eleven inbred babies corn syrup in a bucket. C'mon, guys. Maybe it's time to progress a little bit and lose the hate.
Well said. There are all kinds of people in all states; one of those types is condescending jerks who are mindlessly addicted to stereotypes.
Type 2 Diabetes is not purely caused by dietary excess. Genetic predisposition plays a big factor in its causation also.
Paula Dean has a lot of followers and I think she can use her celebrity status to guide and inspire others. I think portion control is the first step.
You eat butter!
You get fat!
You get diabetes!
You die!
What more do you need to know?
Wow, and I bet you're just perfect. Easy to make nasty comments hiding behind a computer.
Not even remotely true.
A stickfull of butter, helps the medicine go down...
the medicine go down...
GIMME A STICK OF BUTTER NOW, BlTCH!!!!!
I gotta tell ya, she will have the best smiling skull I've ever seen.
Hope the "Predator" doesn't read this post.
I'd still donkey punch that.
.
Ironic.....
She's eating something while something is eating her.
I don't understand the problem here. A diabetic can eat anything he wants to. It's just a matter of portion control. What he must watch is his overall diet.
Now that she is getting her paycheck from the pharma company, maybe the Food Network can fire her!
CNN- you can't even define type 1 and type 2 diabetes????? WTH! It's not just being overweight it's GENETICS in combination with lifestyle that leads to type 2. As, healthcare professional, I have also see patients that have type 2 that were thin, active and had relatively good diet. If it were being fat alone that was the cause of type 2 diabetes then every fat person out there would have diabetes and THEY DON'T. Please get educated. Thanks.
I was pre-diabetic, glucose of 120 now 81. I ate the typical "healthy" diet, lots of grains, whole wheat, almost no meat. Some veggies and fruits. Gained up to 200 lbs, and I am an active mother of 3. Hiked, biked/walked to everything within 5 mile radius, and still could not get rid of the weight and felt miserable and sick. Went on the Paleo/Primal diet (lots of veggies, lots of fruits, lots of lean meats, no sugar, no wheat, no grains, no dairy, no legumes), and what happened? Lost 10 dress sizes, over 40 pounds. It is weight related, genetics might have some part of it. But please do not claim that it's not weight related. No wonder this country is so overweight! We have people in the healthcare business, like you, who are ignorant as well!
You need to re-read KDR's comment. They never said it wasn't weight related. They are simply stating there are other factors. Dick Clark was never fat, but he had a stroke due to his type 2 diabetes. I have to agree with KDR. I myself have been overweight all my life and am not proud of it. But, I get my a1c test every year and not a hint of diabetes and also abnormally low cholesterol readings. I'm not bragging. Nothing to do with my lifestyle. Purely genetics.
Congratulations! Always nice to hear from another who has taken on the primal/paleo lifestyle and add to its 100% success rate.
Visit MarksDailyApple for more information about the healthiest lifestyle possible.
@ Lee She wrote: "If it were being fat alone that was the cause of type 2 diabetes then every fat person out there would have diabetes and THEY DON'T" I guess she never heard of Adult-onset diabetes? Which is what Paula Deen has, which is what I could have become if I didn't change my lifestyle and stop eating the "normal" diet recommended by the American Heart Association food pyramid. It's full of carbs, grains, and wheat. You are a prime example of a person who is overweight, and thinks "I am overweight, but I am healthy!" You are NOT healthy! Overweight and healthy NEVER belong in the same sentence! @ Primal, I know that site very well, and live by it! ;- )
Does this remind anyone of the when the Atkins guy died of a heart attack??
Atkins died from head injuries due to a slip/ fall. Nice try.
"In 2003, Atkins died from a fatal head injury sustained in a fall on ice. His death came after being affected with some form of cardiomyopathy ..."
just like Justin Wilson died from putting too much wine in his cooking and then sipping on some on the side. LOL!
Anyone who eats Paula Deen style food on a regular basis hasn't been paying attention to any diet/health information for the last 20 years. We know this type of food is bad for us if consumed on a regular basis. I don't consider her a "chef", don't watch her program, don't consider her food "cuisine" and would never buy her cookbooks. A perfect example of "caveat emptor". Don't feel betrayed. Get informed on healthy eating.
We should all forget much of the information form the last 20 yeas as most of it is false.
Paula Deen has been an inspiration to me and my family. I have all her cookbooks.
aren't you late for your psychotropic medication and electroshock therapy. This is living proof how dumb, fat, white trash that the slow train wreck south is. Lol.
You must be a very rude, angry, black, northern, fat man!
Lady, youse livin' proof that the South is due to SINK deep inta da butter churn again. Enjoy yer pills, yuk.
How obese are you???
As I come up on my 12 yr anniversary of getting diabetes, I am greatly offended by Paula Deen's lack of judgement concerning her diabetes. As a responsible diabeteic who trys very hard to maintain a healthy life style, Paula seems to think its ok pitch an unhealhty diet and now become a spokesperson for a diabetic drug company just so she can make money off of the disease. She had an opportunity to speak out on the dangers of contracting this disease and maybe help somebody from getting diabetes.
oh gawd, CNN... Take down that face pic. she has enough powder on her face to make a dozen of her biscuits.
I thought this article was about pretty teeth!
To all of the above: if you actually had to care for someone with diabetes, you would be more educated. It doesn't happen "JUST" because of lifestyle. Often there are many other factors involved. I love how the Food Police have decided that it's ok to blame the victims of a disease now. Next time you go see gramma in the canceer ward, you tell her she gave it to herself. Or better yet, maybe the nurses should do it for you!
Type 2 diabetes is one of the most easily preventable diseases we have in the country. It is almost completely dependent on lifestyle choices.
Amen!!
If gramma smoked 2 packs a day and had lung cancer, or was a raging alcoholic and had liver cancer, I probably would have been telling her for years that she was giving herself cancer. Yes, people who don't smoke and don't drink also get these cancers (very rarely), but don't deny the facts that our lifestyles greatly influence our health for better or worse.
So the fact that obesity has overtaken smoking as the number 1 PREVENTABLE cause of death in America means that it definitely isn't lifestyle related? Help me with your argument, will you?
So rather than promote a low-fat, low-calorie diet that might help her and many others, she says, (on TV last night), that 'moderation' is the answer. Oh, and taking drugs which she profits from. What a load.
Sorry, eating fat does not make you fat. We must have fat in order to survive, period. Saturated fat is the fuel your brain craves.
Eating carbs from grains make you fat. Cut those out, and your risk of type 2 diabetes becomes almost non-existent.
I see a lot of people bashing Southerners for eating like Deen. Please let me set the record straight. We do NOT all eat like that. I was born in the TN Valley and have lived almost my entire life below the Mason-Dixon line. I don't know a single soul who eats that way. We probably have as many different regional styles of cooking as anywhere else in the country and many of us are very health conscious. My family eats almost entirely grilled meat, steamed veggies, raw fruit, lots of seafood and wild rice. We don't deep fry a single thing, ever. And I don't even cook regular cheesecake, much less one that's deep fried and rolled in powdered sugar. I confess to loving Greens slow cooked with pork, but that's usually just for the 4th of July. Besides, it is a dark green vegetable, right?
In total agreement with you here. Why many Southerners love sweet tea, fried chicken, etc., Paula's recipes are just beyond ridiculous and fat laden. I live in Georgia, my mother-in-law and her family is from Alabama, and my parents live in SC... no one we know eats like she cooks!! My family has quite healthy eating habits. Yes, we do eat the very occasional fried chicken, drink sweet tea from time to time, the rest of the time we usually eat grilled or sauteed lean meats and veggies. I do have a sweet tooth, but nothing would make me crave even a bit of Paula's deep fried cheesecake. Yuck!
I live in the South and I hate sweet tea, it has to be unsweetened for me. Why so many people out here like sweet tea is beyond me. I'm thin and trying to stay that way. It's not as easy after 35. Whatever you do, don't eat the type of food Paula Deen cooks very often, if ever.
Give me a break. The woman is a walking, talking white trash, obese slow trainwreck.
Youse right about dat, pal. Deans' proof that her relations were humpin' vegetables a coupla generations ago.
Careful, your lack of education is showing. But then again, I don't think it would take much to show how stupid you really are.
How do you feel about Julia Child? Died at 91, after years of butter rich recipes.
OMG... I am shocked....Wait does this mean the earth really isn't flat?
I am not a big fan of Paula Deen, not since I saw her on Leno's show cooking & licking her fingers & putting her hands in whatever they were cooking...GROSS! But I still feel bad for her diagnosis. Yes, she brought it on herself with her diet & lifestyle – just like many of us. It really bothers me that a popular personality like her would keep it "close to my chest" until she had a financial stake in coming forward. It just further justifies my dislike of her.
I too stopped watching her several years ago after watching her LICK HER FINGERS and serve food to guests..Can't stand the woman..surprised some of her guests weren't diagnosed with some bacterial illness!
I love Paula and her big fat diabetic booty!!!! I want to let her taste my keilbasa!!! It's long and thick and meaty and tasty.
The more I think about it the madder I get. What a moneygrubber all at the expense of her viewers and fans!! What a hypocrite!! Paula, please go away. Please.
I love Anthony Bourdain and his response to the fat slug with cake makeup and chicklets in her mouth for teeth.
I don't love him. And the way he drinks and smokes on his show isn't exactly healthy either. Pot calling the kettle black.
First she makes a personal fortune off demonstrating the worst possible cooking, then waits three years after her diagnosis to be sure her personal fortune is secured, and then announces her diagnosis after she has arranged to make another personal fortune in a deal with the drug company. Don't she beat all!!
Making the best of a bad situation. Don't forget all those tasty meals that went down the hatch!
Gotta hit the iron while it is hot.
Yikes, to bad. I guess her cooking reflects her health. I wish her luck.
She's self-medicating with bacon. Piles of crispy bacon.
Let's EAT Paula! More butter, please. I want to be a fat, ugly redneck FOOD PUSHER, too! Diabetes IS a death sentence. You are in DENIAL, silly COW!
she's a souther fried fat b 1tch. I love to see that fat slug roll around like a cardiac patient on dancing with the stars.
daaayuuuum! mean az a motha inlaw but funny azz white bread! lol!
I would love to see you play Russian roulette and LOSE big! Then, you can roll around on the floor like the a** you are while people laugh at you and refuse to help you. At least you wouldn’t be able to waste all your time making fun of people. Get a job or better yet, get a life.
Deeny Queeny can have dat fried foodz cuz i gotz all dat goooooold!
she out only cause she can make money otherwise (ita personal matter)
English. Do you speak it?
I really love Paula Dean BUT, being a type 2 diabetic myself, as much as I enjoy her I know that eating her recipes is totally wrong for me. Would I love to have some deep fried southern chicken? Absolutely but that is not something a diabetic takes with moderation. At least if you want to stick around awhile! Diabetes is something that one must work at every day to keep under control. And I want it under control so I can enjoy the rest of my life and my wonderful grandkids! Wake up Paula, it is not as easy as doing things in moderation.
I saw the "headline", if you want to call it that, and just had to come in here to say, "Who cares?" There, some of my morning grumps are vented and I feel a little more superior. :)
I consider Paula Deen to be irresponsible. As a public figure, how could she reveal that she was diagnosed 3 years ago and had little to offer the public? Given all that is at her finger tips, she should have altered the disgusting and unhealthy recipes concocted on her shows. She has tried to make her sons cooks and television personalities with what I consider little success. Looking back over her comments about her diagnosis and the upcoming show by one of her sons, I see nothing but financial strategy in their minds. Now, she is gong to be a spokesperson for a pharmaceutical company? Wow, does she really think that we are all crazy? Trust me....I live with type 2 diabetes and there is little in modertation that controls the disease. Control = radical intake.
Sheila, you've touched on all the points I was thinking as I read this. It's all about the money for her. It's sickening.
I think she seems like a very nice person. I have never bought her books or tried her recipes because they don't seem at all healthy. I think Anthony Bordain (sp?) was much too rude and harsh in his feedback. However, I am disappointed to know this woman has known she had this medical condition for several years and has continued to encourage people to eat foods that can cause diabetes. It is nice to eat this way on occasion. I hope Paula goes on to make healthy food more popular now. I wish her good health and good luck.
Lady, you are a dolt! Bourdain,, Has it exactly right. Dean is a lying fat pig who peddles heroin to her fellow addicts. She should be banned from any 'food' endorsements. airwaves and bookstores. DISGUSTING enabler is now one of US, serves her right. Blindness, amputations and strokes await you!
Was just watching the news and the news anchors seemed to think that Paula's son, Bobbie, hasn't yet come out with his show "Not My Mamma's Meals", in which he "healthifies" his Mom's recipes. Well, he did last week, coincidence?
http://www.cookingchanneltv.com/not-my-mamas-meals/index.html
NOW all of a sudden one of her son's has launched his Mom's recipes made "healthier"??????
Paula knew about her diabetes for 3 years and only recently it seems to continue the income fm TV shows they worked on changing some of her recipes to suit a healiter lifestyle......pretty smart...but pretty sneaky as well.. ..I wonder if SHE will continue carry forward with her own unhealthy recipes.
it's not sneaky – it's business.
Yes, sneaky business...to continue to earn mega bucks at the cost of health....
this was reported a few years ago she denied it ,national e had her on the front or middle page.a lady i know went to eat at her place said it was A GREASY MESS
Honestly? The way Southerners eat is shocking! I'm surprised any of them live past 55. Everything is fried, buttered, gravied or otherwise greased. A vegetable can start out healthful and end up fried and served with gravy. It's all about red meat, and lots of it. No wonder there's such an obesity problem in the South. Shame on you Paula..you did this to yourself!
Really? she did this to herself? maybe she got it at the same store you got stupid!
Fool, you haven't a clue as to how Southerners eat. You probably think all Cajuns walk around saying "I Gar-on-tee", don't you.
As someone with southern roots, I totally agree. One person I know with diabetes was told by their doctor that it was okay to eat non- dairy topping. Whipped corn syrup! When my dad was in the hospital, I wanted to get a meal at the cafeteria. Not possible since I'm allergic to dairy and corn and everything was drenched in butter or cream, fried in corn oil, or made with corn syrup (salad dressing) I accept that eating at their restaurants is out, but the hospital? A big part of what people call genetics is unhealthy people feeding their kids the same way they eat.
Hey there's plenty of us thin people out here too. We don't all eat like that!
From the Detroit Free Press version: "...I made the choice at the time to keep it close to me, to keep it close to my chest," she said in her first interview about the disease. "I felt like I had nothing to offer anybody other than the announcement. I wasn't armed with enough knowledge. I knew when it was time it would be in God's time..."
I guess god wanted to make sure she made enough money instead of helping people...
I disagree with most of you. First none of you actually thought that anything Paula Deen cooks up is actually good for you, so if you chose to eat it, then that's on you. Second, she is a person, who has the right to diseminate private information about a serious medical diagnosis in her own way. None of us was entitled to know.
Reading these posts, I'd say that most of these posters are self-righteous hypocrites. Just the vibe I get. I no, I'm not fat, I'm thin, and I live in the South.
In typical american fashion, she goes for the drugs instead of the diet...well done fatso!
The southern porkchop queen was all about the money. She like so many others give people in the south a bad name. She puts on that fake southern charm on tv but is a real WITCH when the camera is turned off.I hear she has won alot of pie eating contest at fairs all over the south.Better you than me FATSO.
She needs to cut down on the fats! It's ridiculous how she cooks. It tastes good, but let's get real. She's a fat heart attack waiting to happen and look what's she's doing to her husband and the populace. She ought to be ashamed of hiding her 3-year old diabetes condition since she's a chef and has knowledge of foods and what it does to people. She's in in for the money depsite her charming personality.
She is an easy target and you took a pot shot. It is rude to call people 'fatso'. Immature and rude.
Shhadd-up, already, dolt!
I'm guessing you did'nt see the clickable link next to her face that says they want her on Dancing with the 'Stars' next year did you?
I was too distracted by the fake asz teeth on that fake asz face
Remember the good old days of food network when they used to feature actual talent like Chef Daniel Bolud, Chef Jamie Oliver, Chef Julia Child to name a few? Now it's a bunch pseudo 'chefs', game shows, and reality programing. I actually saw a commercial that had Coolio and Lou Diamond Phillips on a new show......YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!!
yeah, Celebrity dancing with the ice sating rehabbing weight losing wife swapping b-list cooking has-been's
Can you even imagine the toxic gas that must spew constantly from her posterior due to her steady diet of cream cheese butter lard fat cheese bacon etc?
...and the toxic gas from the front end as well...
i like all the comments about how she's not forcing anyone to eat her food or watch her show. Unfortunately, i can't go to the book store, grocery store checkout, dentist lobby, etc. without seeing that fake a** mug of her's smattered all over the place!
Here are the main ingredients in Anthony Bourdain’s Cassoulet (he describes this as one of his favorite dishes): 5 cups white beans, 2lb. pork belly, 1 lb. pork rind, 6 pork sausages, 2 cups duck fat, etc. I think what Paula is doing is deplorable, but Bourdain has no right to talk (drinking, smoking, etc.)
that's the basis for any cassoulet (a classic French dish) recipe you moron, not just Bourdain's
Those are the BASIC ingredients to his version. Of course, it's a French dish. His family is originally from France. That probably explains why he is such a pompous ass. . . which I think you might be, also.
Bourdain's complaints about Deen's cooking should be served up with a mirror to his own habits.
PR people do stuff like this to drum up interest, a la the Trump/O'Donnell dust-up a few years ago. It's all hooey.
Tim- please share your recipe for cassoulet...hmmm?
Ummm.... Paula admits to smoking a pack and a half per day.
I lost all respect for Paula. She could have easily paired up with a non profit diabetes association to promote awareness but rather she jumped in bed with a big pharm company just for the money. If she were serious about promoting this issue she would have done something about raising awareness three years ago. And not only is she pulling in the big money with the pharm companies, her family has now had three year's to profit but putting together a now lighter version of her recipies. She'll be pulling in money on both ends. Like I said, I have zero respect for her.
She probably celebrated the news of her newly acquired condition baking a pie with 6 lbs of butter.
There are several clinics that have cured people of diabetes and they have film documentation to prove it. But guess what? The insulin making drug companies complained to the FDA and the FDA threatened to shut them down if they keep making those claims.
The big Pharm will never cure diabetes. They make too much money from it.
Maybe people should eat healthier, not take drugs.
Well said!
Paula is a product of the South – they all eat like that. She needs to follow the advice of Dr. Oz; if she does, she will live a long healthy life.
Oh James, I didn't know that you personally knew the hundreds of thousands of people in the South. You must have soooo many friends and be so close to know what each and every one of us eats! You must have missed my whole town on your door to door tour of the South. FYI: I was born and raised here. I am vegetarian. I do not eat fried food even if it is a veggie. I don't eat refined sugars, processed foods, or any meat whether it is fatty or not. I am a fresh whole foods kind of gal. And its not just me. There are sooo many people who eat healthy and live in the South so please watch your generalized statements. Heck, we all grew up on farms! Some of us never grew up knowing that kind of food and still dont! Paula Deen makes horrible food choices, promotoes it, and then makes money from it. I do NOT even claim her as a Southerner. She lost that title after she promoted such fiilthy food and tried to justify it because of how people like you think we all eat.
"There are sooo many people who eat healthy and live in the South so please watch your generalized statements."
LaJean – the southeastern US leads the nation in obesity. It is not a "generalized statement", it is a fact. Check the CDC statistics.
The article states that Type 2 is caused by a sedentary lifestyle and poor diet that cause excess weight. Those are factors, but there are others. For those out there who are thin, its not a bad idea to get checked for diabetes occasionally. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes in my mid 30's but my blood sugar response stayed the same after I delivered my baby. I am and have always been thin with a BMI around 20.5 (except of course when I'm pregnant). I am not amazingly active but am not a couch potato as I chase my kids around a lot:-). In my case, we have a strong genetic predisposition towards diabetes and apparently that's why I developed it in spite of not having the usual risk factors. Someone mentioned Richard Bernstein's book - I agree it is excellent and I've been diabetic for 7 years now and have kept my A1c's between 5.3 and 5.7 based on his dietary and lifestyle advice.
Yummmmmmmmmy!
Anyone with half a brain who is diagnosed for Type II diabetes and does not want to change their lifestyle should take any diabetes medication EXCEPT the ones made by Novo Nordisk, which manufactures Victoza – an injectable. You don't let a person who made you sick operate on you and you don't let an arsonist help put out a fire and you certainly don't let someone who has an interest and promoting foods that cause diabetes ALSO make money on you by promoting drugs to treat it.
When people wash their hands and get paid on both sides of the aisle for anyone except Hollywood it is called "conflict of interests" and is unethical when it is not downright illegal.
Get a life! I at a T2 and I will continue to take my Victoza and my NovoLog (both made by NovoNordisk). Paula Deen and Food Network didn't force her dishes on anyone and quite frankly it's no one's damned business what medical conditions she must deal with. If it takes NovoNordisk to have a celebrity "face" for marketing their products, then fine. I don't see any difference here than all those Nike Air Jordans or other celebrity endorsed products. If you don't like her style of food, don't eat it and even better yet, change the f**king channel!
I saw Paula on Dr. Oz and unfortunately she admitted she also has a pack a day smoking habit. I'm a health care professional and I will support the statement that Type 2 diabetes is not a death sentence however a pack a day smoker with type 2 diabetes, elevated cholesterol and a weight problem are pretty much the criteria for a life that will, not could, be cut short.
My grandfather ate nothing but eggs, bacon, and pecan pies and drank a bottle of whiskey a day in his last 10 years.. he lived to be 90.
I can only agree. As a Type I diabetic and former smoker, I'll just pass along what my doctor said about this combination: "Diabetes is like a fire; smoking when you're diabetic is like throwing gasoline on it." You're already at several times the risk for lots of problems, including heart disease, when you're diabetic; amplifying that by smoking and being overweight is, in fact, handing yourself a death sentence.
Although I have never seen her show, I have to say one thing. When I was Rxed 8 years ago, I went to a dietitian and she told me I need to eat 300g of carbs a day. My A1c was already in the 11 range. I never went back t that quack, I started listening to Dr. Richard Bernstein who advocated a /very low-carb diet./ and by 6 months it was in the 5 range (non-diabetic.) I've never been on any diabetic medication, and keep it in the 5 range by eating very low carb (I'm around 60g a day) and getting to my normal weight. The idea you must have 300g of carbs a day is a fantasy pushed by the food, and drug manufactors. Dont' believe me? Check out the wikipedia article about the Inuit people, and they're extreemly low carb high protein diet – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inuit#Diet. Dr. Bernstein advocates 30g of carbs a day. Which isn't possible with me, but 60+ is possible by a normal person.
She on the other hand, makes a deal with a drug company, makes me think she's just like that quack dietitan. Eat 300g of carbs a day, and eat pills. Just goes to show what really matters. $$$ over lives. Maybe she should write cookbooks on very very low-carb diets. 99% of the 'diabetic' cookbooks aren't diabetic safe.
The reason patients are told to eat so many carbs per day is to justify the medication, without justification if on insulin you could have an insulin reaction which can be just as deadly to a diabetic as ketosis. The industry makes sure you have to rely on the medication by encouraging such a use of carbs that you have to use the medication to bring it down then a continual high use of carbs is necessary for the medication they give you–it is an endless loop and guarantees them a customer for that medication for life.
You are on the right track with limiting the carbs. I am 64 years old and I have had Type 2 diabetes for a good 10 years now. I have learned that avoiding carbs (especially sugar, white flour, rice and potatoes), combined with 30-40 minutes of vigorous exercise will get your blood sugar down to an acceptable level. About a year and a half ago my wife and I got a diet from an endocronologist (sp?) she was seeing for a thyroid problem. His diet is a variation of the Atkins diet, with one special feature. Besides limiting carbs, he says not to have any carbs before lunch. We started that diet and immediately began losing weight. I have taken off and kept off 15 pounds. That plus exercise will get my blood sugar below 110 almost immediately. Last year I was able to get off all the diabetes meds until I got sloppy with my diet and exercise. Now I am back on Metformin, but if I can lose another 10 pounds or so and get back into the exercise routine, I can manage the problem. Paula Deen's problem is that she is looking for an easy way out without addressing the causes.
She's got more chins than chinatown. I bet her flesh hangs like sheets on her body. It wouldn't surprise me if she washes with a rag on a stick.
Ohh emm gee!! I LAUGHED MY ASS OFF after reading your comment. Cheers to you my good man!!
Most girls in high school are much larger than her now.....
Why are you so mean? I hope you are just looking for attention. No one can be that big of an a**.
I bet YOU are!
Are you making fun of oriental people and southerns? I just hope that you get made fun of like you are doing here. You are only trying to be mean. I never realized how ignorant some people can be. Your user name says it all.
I only watched her once on TV, but the food she was cooking grossed me out. It looked like it would give you indigestion.
Wow, what luck! Now she's got a tv show AND a corporate drug pushing gig. If she could only get cancer too she might make enough money to retire!
Scanning these posts, I’m stunned, and saddened.
Most of them add very little to any supposed health debate or concern for state of national health…but they say so much about the level of hatred and self-righteousness that exists. Some of these people are revealing some deep-seated issues with overweight people and it’s kind of scary. Like the anorexic who is disgusted by someone eating. Sometimes I miss the pre-Internet days where I could simply assume that most people were good-hearted and compassionate toward others. When I read comment sections like this, I realize how naïve that assumption was. I just try to naively assume they reflect only a fraction of the population because some of these posts sound downright mean and scary.
WELL PUT.
That's because so many folks feel "safe" hiding behind their screen names while pointing fingers at others.
Kat, think about it, the people commenting here are a tiny sliver of the population, not representative of it AT ALL. They are the outliers who are motivated enough by bitterness/meaness, etc., to go on a website and say something mean. Isn't it better that they do it here instead of out on the road where they might hurt someone?
Making nasty comments about overweight people does nothing to help the obesity problem in the US. On the other hand, reasonable comments that are critical of her in a non-evil way shouldn't bother you. It is pretty messed up that she pushes such unhealthy food, and now she's a spokesperson for a drug? She's part of the problem, not the solution.
This is not 'most people'. If you check you can see some are just trolls who come and post regularly negative, offensive things for sport. Most posting the negative things wouldn't if they had to stay these things in public. Most people wouldn't act this way in 'the real world'. I do not think the comments you see are reflective of anything other than that a small % of people will act rudely if they can do so anonymously.
Gardengirl, you are right. Most of the offensive comments are most likely coming from uneducated people who live on welfare their entire life without much ambition.
I’m not a Paula Deen fan . . . but then I loathe Anthony Bourdain. He is probably the most pompous, arrogant ass on TV. He thinks he is the Hunter Thompson of travel & food. If I met him on the street I would punch him in the face, repeatedly.
You can dislike Bourdain all you want, he was right. He doesn't pretend to be anything else but himself. Doesn't pretend to be better than everyone else. She sold her disease and herself to the highest bidder nothing morale about her. Bourdain may be an arse sometimes but he's not a hypocrite.
Truer words were never spoken. Bourdain would rather pluck his own eyes out that make the lard covered, heart stopping swill that deen makes. It's tastes lousy and is bad for you as well. Only lousy cooks use lots of sauces, butter, lard, sugar, etc. Bourdain is cool. I've eaten at his restaurants and his food is excellent, tastes good and doesn't damage your health.
Bourdain may be right, but that doesn't prevent him from being an arrogant pr*ck who deserves a punch in the face. He is exceeded only by Dr. Phil and Drew Pinski as the most insufferable person on the planet.
"People are not going to quit eating...I wanted to bring something to the table." – Yes, a lucrative drug company contract for yourself. Anthony Bourdain was right, and I suspect that Novo Nordisk is considering firing her due to bad publicity. I hope her fat "followers" are not fooled by these lies- thinking you can eat junk and taking a pill will fix you right up. For shame- a drug company shill all these years, teaching new diabetic customers how to eat so they too can become Novo Nordisk pill takers.
Paula, Dear Sweet lady, You cook Water starting with a stick of Butter! Of course you have type 2. But it's not the end of the world. We all still love you to death, but lets put death off a few more years by cooking a little less from the oowey-goowey side and more to the artery-friendly side. Best of luck, Love!
I have seen a couple of paula's shows. She has a great personality and has worked hard to get to her position. A very successful lady. Great for her. But the truth is most of the foods she prepares are not the best for her health and the health of her viewers. Am I saying no one should eat such? Absolutely not. Once in a blue moon eating those foods won't nit do you any harm. But constantly eating heavy meals lilt that even just four times a week with a sedentary job(your regular sit down for eight hours kind of job) and no exercise is a perfect cocktail for type two diabetes.
Having said all that, we are humans, we all have our weaknesses, for some it's smoking, drinking or some other habit. So all we can do is try
As a type 2 diabetic on Insulin I'm glad she has come out of the closet. yes her recipes are delicious but she understands the danger of choices in diet. deny this disease and staying the closet is deadly.
One look at that cow would confirm it.
Paula has diabetes? No, you're kidding me? Really? Her problem? She eats too much, and too much of the unhealthy foods. It's her fault–completely. Duh...
I wonder if she will change her diet at all. I highly doubt it...what is even worse is that she has recipe books selling around the country adding to the US Obesity issue. And we wonder why US has an obesity issue. Maybe because we glorify unhealthy eating habits...like Paula.
Did anyone see her on the Joy Behar show answering questions about how Anthony Bourdain's disontent with her about how unhealthy her foods are? She was a riot! She actually told Joy "at least I don't eat a$$holes"!
Jealous of success of a great woman. You don't have to cook and eat it she is just showing you how to make it. Using her freedom of speech. As they say sucka born everyday. Broccoli for cancer, Tuna for your eye's . Sure $$ keep freaking out the marketers love you xx
Gastro-Republican. Just like Romney, if someone criticizes someone or something, they're just jealous.
She is a role model for hundreds of thousands of people, and she misled them. She should make amends by using different recipes in the future: healthy and tasteful recipes.
Jealous of success of a great BIG woman
Fixed!!!
Same on u FATSO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shame on u FATSO for promoting FOOD OF DEATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does anybody take responsibility for their own actions anymore? If you don't like her food....CHANGE THE CHANNEL!!!!!!! Any food can be eaten in moderation, even Paula's. If I make something from her show, I know it will have butter....lots of butter....there is absolutely nothing wrong with that......as long as i am not eating it EVERYDAY! WHAT A BUNCH OF WHINERS!!!!!!!!! GROW UP AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN LIFE!
No, shame on YOU for being a FAT BIGGOT!!!
I was diagnosed as a type 2 a few years ago. I became slow and lazy when I hit my 40's. But I buckled down and dropped a few lbs. by just watching what i ate and how much. It isnt hard, you just need to break a few habits. The food I grew up with is not the same food as we eat today. Take a look at the ingredeants in most food you buy. Its discusting.
Exactly. Pre-packaged food is loaded with all sorts of chemicals, stabilizers, tons of hidden sugars, fat and salts. Even Deen's cooking – if done from scratch – is infinitely healthier than most "low-fat" or "diet" packaged foods. It's not just the fat that's the problem.
I have high blood pressure and have managed to avoid being put on medication at 30 like my aunts and uncles. I am coming into my mid 30s and thanks to an active lifestyle and an overall healthy diet...along with some yoga...my pressure is the lowest it has been since I was a kid. It doesn't include Paula Deen crap
I call her show "cooking your way to arterioschlerosis with Paula Dean" I think I'll still call it that even though it has proven to be diabetes; because she will eventually have arterioschlerosis... if she doesn't already.
I'm really upset with Paula, She should have been honest and up-front about her diabetes. She"s totally in it for the MONEY!
I should work with the drug company - I have been battling diabetes type II for about ten years. Never would I suggest any of Paul's fattening, sweet recipes to anyone!
I take 8 pills per day and one insulin shot. I also walk an hour per day and have a strict diet. She infuriates me cashing in on the fatty, buttery, sweet recipe and now will get even more money from the drug company. What a shame!
I personally will be contacting the drug company – - maybe I too can cash in!!
What a bunch of mean-spirited hypocrites! Have a piece of cheesecake and maybe you won't be so bitter, nasty, and mean.
It's not what you eat... it's how much. The obesity problem is very much correlated to portion size. Does anyone really need a 64 oz soda? I remember the days (and I'm not that old) when a quarter pounder was considered huge. These days it's just a start.
I just hope and pray that Ms. Deen and her family have the good sense not to listen to the hypocritical whining of you jerks. Take your nanny-state nastyness and shove it. Some of you really need to look into the concept of enjoying life.
David,
It is also what you eat.
Not what you eat but how much? Based on your best guess? Maybe a physician? How do you feel that 5% of medical professionals have any formal training in nutrition? That being said if you got your "fact" from a doc what the hell do they know? Take a pill, come back and see me... repeat. That is medicine? I think not. Wanna get an unbiased lesson? Watch the documentary "Forks Over Knives". A sad look at the reality of modern medicine in a profit driven society.
Why are we hypocrites? Are you assuming that we all eat like Paula Dean? NOT ME !!!! No way. People in this comments section are mad because of her blatant denial of social responsibility by ENCOURAGING gluttony and then denying she has any hand in it. Yes we are all responsible for our own actions, and there are people who are easily influenced and these are the ones she caters to- but again, denying that she does. SHE is the hypocrite here.
WELL SAID!!!!!
Booter 'n' Ole!
What is the big deal if people are skinny/fat, healthy/sick, rich/poor, male/female, religious/atheist, young/old or right/wrong? We're all going to die anyway. What's the point?
this is hilarious. of course she has diabetes, the fatty. and now instead of eating healthy, she will take the easy way out and use drugs to solve her problems. you know who else uses drugs to solve problems...heroin users.
You don't say? Deep fried butter encrusted butter is bad for you?
Why blame Paula?????? I have diabetes and I never watch cooking shows. I have cookbooks in my house from 50 years ago that have junk food in them. We are each responsible for our own health. Period.
If you watched Paula Deen's cooking show, you would see what the deal is – ALL of her food is loaded with butter, butter and more butter. Tons of sour cream, butter and more butter. I have never seen any recipes that compare to hers in fat content. Elvis would have loved her. In fact, I'm sure she is the person who came up with the fried peanut butter banana sandwich.
You seem to know alot about her show......if I disliked something as much as you come across disliking Paula....I probably wouldn't know so much about it! GROW UP! CHANGE THE CHANNEL!
Cherie, You forgot the two main ingredients: sugar, and mayonnaise.
You don't have to blame Paula for anything but a person who promotes unhealthy food should not make money on people by exploiting what she helps to cause in the first place. You may have old cookbooks in your home with junk food in them but did any of their authors work for a company that makes money on the unhealthy results of the junk food? The fault is in her association with a big pharm company that THRIVES off of people being unhealthy. Just because she promotes bad food does not mean she should also make money on treating the problem she is helping to cause–that's all.
Do you watch Food Network? 95% of all the shows on there could be classified as promoting an unhealthy lifestyle. If you don't like it, get up and change the damned channel. Otherwise, look at it for what it is, entertainment! Food Network, and it's celebrity chefs (with the exception of that Hungry Girl bimbo) are not trying to force their particular food styles on anyone.
AMEN!!! And yes, folks, I do watch Paula Deen...FOR ENTERTAINMENT! Take some responsibility for what you put in your own mouth (or what you spew from it) and quit whining about how we need to be living in a Nanny State where Big Brother protects us from all evils! Hypocrites!
Duh! All that butter and sour cream......
No surprise here. Saw this a-coming a for awhile now. Now if she can adjust all her recipies to be healthy, I just might try them.
Ms Deen seems to have no shame, and also to be completely unaware that Mr Roker used to weigh at least 100 pounds more than he does now, but has kept that weight off for a decade.
Al Roker had gastric bypass surgery.
Mr Roker having had gastric bypass is irrelevant. Many people have the surgery and still manage to regain their weight because they cannot control their behavior–responding with the man having had surgery to help correct his weight is about as petty as responding to a person with a beating heart by saying they have a pace maker. So the hell what?
Shame for what? You folks are just a bunch of Nanny Sate whiners that want Big Brother monitoring your every breath. Paula Deen and the rest of the Food Network crew have NEVER forced anything down your (or anyone else's) throat. If you've chosen to try their dishes, that was under your own free will!
***This incident highlights what a horrible woman she is. She waits 3 years to apparently "help" others like her through this? Sounds like she was waiting for the appropriate company with the right price to be the spokeswoman for. If she cared she wouldn't have panhandled her terribly unhealthy food to people for all this time. Just another proof she's a substandard chef/liar.
"Panhandling" is a perfect word for what she does. I watched her show once where the main ingredients for a dip were cream cheese, sour cream, sugar and butter.. and now she's giving us the face palm saying "hey, I'm not your doctor":. This is the epitome of of selfishness and denmial of social responsibility. She knows she is a huge influence on people but she refuses to accept responsibility for that... because she does NOT care about her viewers.
I am not in agreement with what Paula is doing, but WHY do you think she should "care" about her viewers? She cares about her ratings and a paycheck–if you think strangers who make money off people actually "care" about them as individuals, then you are ripe for the politicians running around right now. That makes no sense. NO STAR cares about a viewer–or at least most of them do not–not personally–they care about their paycheck and the viewer is nothing more than a means to a payday. Grow up.
Queen Bee .. plese read the article and refer to the part where she mentions why she didn't reveal her diabetes until years later. It was because she "had nothing to give to my fellow friends out there." We all know they don't care. However, she tries to suggest otherwise, which is disingenuous. Scroll up.
old + obese = diabetes..... why is this news?
Ever been to her restaurant in Savannah? I did and you have to look hard to find one healthy thing.
This lady is proud that she cooks with fattening foods and now she is paying the price.
For a smart woman, she ain't too.
Her hypocrisy in her relentless pursuit of the almighty dollar is despicable. I cannot imagine how many people she has negatively influenced to eat her unhealthy foods, all the while laughing about the fat and calories. I am disgusted.
Shame on you Paula for not telling the public for 3 years only to rake in the dough then only come out when you are paid too. It's all about the money with you!!!
It's your business why? All you people are so hateful and mean. Glad I don't know you.
That makes two of us!
Three.
Four. Paula Deen has always been a lovely, accessible, delightful, genuine person who never ONCE said, "Here. EAT THIS WHOLE STICK O' BUTTER EVERY SINGLE DAY."
Good grief, use some common sense and have some common decency, people. Must EVERYTHING in this world be food police approved? Can't you rely on JUDGEMENT not to eat the WHOLE pie beautiful, creamy, but only a tiny slice?
I do.
Quit being such foul, hateful human beings. She makes delicious food on TV. That's all. "There but for the grace..." Remember?
It's our business because she sets herself up as a role model.
and we wonder why our country can't keep health care costs in check. Sure, you can get a drug to treat diabetes, but it's not cheap and it's subsidized by your health plan and employer.
1-5 MORONS like the fat-pig who says 'eat a stick of butter every day' When she loses her, sight, legs and has a stroke–the tv food world will REJOICE! God, you people are DIMB.
Because she needed another 3 years of ratings- don't forget she's feeding the corporate machine !!
Yes, just continue to pump your body full of crappy Paul Dean recipes and then inject yourself with who-knows-what to counteract it. Simple.
no kidding... eat what you want, they have a pill for that.
Surprise surprise! You can't eat like that and not do the physical labor in the fields like people used to do in the old days when they burned it off.
I lost 5000 pounds on Paula's diet. I am an elephant.
Let's see...have some of you ever heard of owning you rown behavior? Just because Paula Deen cooks with butter, sugar, etc. is not sign that others have to follow suit. Her show is entertyainment, period. For those ridiculing her looks, get a life.
she has the most fake and creepiest smile of any celebrity chef. To boot, she's cooked with fats all this time, this is why her looks are ridiculed. As for purely "entertainment", there are plenty of ignorant americans (which i assume may be you) that would be charmed by this "southern smile" and not think twice that smothering everything in butter and double deep frying might not be a good idea.
I think her show is popular for the viewers from the south, where they eat like that.
No surprise she developed Type 2. Given her recipes the surprise is she doesn't have the first case of Type 3.
Indeed!
What is that? Instant death?
What is most appalling is how she hid the fact (not that it is the worlds business to know such personal matters) until she landed an endorsement to announce the news to the world. Cashing in on an affliction with help from Novo-Nordisk.Next we will see her in ads endorsing Truvia and Splenda.
What I see on here is fat hatred, pure and simple. Not hatred of poor health or even obesity. The evil comments on this blog proves it. If Ms. Deen had said she had lung cancer from smoking, would you still say 'good she deserves it'? Seeing how you're acting now, I don't doubt it. Why do fat ppl elicit such hatred? And don't try to lie and say you're concerned for our health. Being nasty towards ppl DOESN'T improve their health, only shows how evil you are. I'd say shame on you, but that would imply you have any decency!
Are you saying that it's not your own fault you're fat because you eat more than you burn off or if you get lung cancer because you smoked things that cause lung cancer? If so, you are living in a pretend world.
Fat IS disgusting. Says a lot about a person. Lazy, gluttonous, stupid. Plus, this woman promotes this crap and others swallow her BS. The woman is the evil one – her profit at the cost of bad health and high healthcare costs. (And, please, get rid of those obviously fake teeth.) What a sad joke. Gross.
"If Ms. Deen had said she had lung cancer from smoking, would you still say 'good she deserves it'? "
----
I don't think anybody here is saying she deserves Type II Diabetes. I think people here ARE saying that, yeah, if you have a hole put in your neck so you can smoke while you smoke – you probably shouldn't be surprised if you end up with lung cancer after going through 70 packs a week.
In the same vain, a person who deep fries bacon to be put onto a sandwich that uses two donuts in lieu of bread probably shouldn't be surprised when it adversely affects their health.
It's also a big potshot at CNN because, let's face it, CNN is to news what FOX is to journalistic integrity. They wish really hard for people to take them seriously, and then publish articles which simply cut and paste responses (not unlike yours and mine) they received on different articles.
Come on, folks. Dizzyd is right...dial down the vitriol, and hateful comments. I don't like Paula Deen's cooking at all and everyone I know who "loves" her show have weight issues, but i certainly don't wish them ill health. Be angry at her profiting from this lifestyle she has charmingly sold to many people...that's Bourdain's point. No one should EVER eat fried butter!
Why is this news? The media acts like this is some big shocking secret. The woman has diabetes. That is not news.
The most UNsurprising news of the decade. And, oh yes, that's the solution, Paula. After you pump yourself full of lard & sugar, act surprised that you have type II diabetes & just swallow some pills. Cripes. No wonder we are all fat slugs costing us all billions in diabetes treatment in this country.
Paula's son has a new show where he takes Paula's fatty, carb laden recipes and recreates them into the healthy, delicious versions. They then take the food out to the streets and let the public tell them if it rocks or not. Seems to be delicious and apparently, Paula has suggested she will begin to cook healthier. So, something positive is coming. Don't be surprised if she comes out with a new healthier cooking show as well.
Meanwhile, she's been diabetic for three years and has been pushing her fat-laden fare with ardor that whole time. The only reason she's had this pseudo-epiphany is that she was about to be outed as the hypocrite she's always been.
Wow – that was ugly.
Actually, seems pretty accurate to me. That's our problem anymore these days – it's not OK to call things what they are. Well, maybe it's time to take back reality!
She's not twisting anyone's arm to watch her show or use her recipes. It's your choice. I personally like to have some really good gooey food every now and then and I do and I am not overweight. Moderation and common sense people!! Life is too short not to enjoy yummy things!! Lighten up. I don't think it's anyone's business anyway. You go Paula!
She's not a socialist., she doesn't MAKE you eat her recipes! Hellooooooooooooo.
Those dentures she wears are ridiculous. She most likely lost them due to poor dental hygiene. She looks like the bell of the Ku Klux Klan ball.
I like you already.
There's a shocker. Eat like a hog and not expect anything? Pick up some weights and do some cardio lady, you're a disgrace to the American people. Try a Mediterranean diet for once in your sad, fat life.
Isn't this the douche who's always shoveling pounds of butter into her recipes? I think it's called KARMA! This pig needs to have her show yanked for poisoning the stupid hicks that follow her.
I wonder if she will now stop smoking like a chimney.
Too many of those Krispy Kreme cheeseburgers she was peddling not long ago. Of course, the deep-fried butter she was stuffing her maw with at a state fair last summer probably wasn't helping her a1c results, either.
She doesn't make people eat the way she prepares her food. Its your choice and yes she probably did it for the money but so would we all if we had a chance. I think she is a nice lady and remember she started out with sack lunches. Good Luck, Paula
She is a piggy douche and her cooking poisonous shite!
Paula Deen should go Primal.
Wow. Not one of you had anything decent to say about this story, and that's just damned sad. We can only hope the world will end this year, because it's apparent nobody gives a s**t anymore...
What "decent" thing could possibly be said about this article?
Well let me start by saying " I'm a diabetic", that said i love southern food, Fried Chicken, Pecan Pie, as a diabetic i can eat anything i want provided i'm willing to take the shot to cover it. And that is where my problem in this matter starts. I can't believe she sold out to a company that is not willing to find a cure, rather than treat the symtoms. There is NO MONEY in cures, the money is in treating patients forever. Think they should cut all federal funding to drug Co.
Are you type 1 or type 2? Type 2 has been cured by changing what you eat and exercise. Drugs are not the answers for long term. If you want to be cured of the disease, change your diet and exercise. I am not judging you or anyone else at all, but I was diagnosed with Type 2 (3) years ago and there are no signs of it now because I completely changed what I was eating and started exercising. Talk to a nutrionist and they will tell you the same.
Don't be ignorant, Laurie. Type II Diabetics are not "cured" by changing their diets–they just alleviate their symptoms–if they were "cured" by changing their diets, then after their "cure" they could go back to their wrong way of eating without consequences–that is the meaning of a "cure" something is gone for ever and you don't ever have to address it or treat it or worry about it.. Type II CAN reverse the symptoms through diet and exercise but they must continue to TREAT their diabetes by eating the right way or it will come right back–which means–(wait for it....) They are NOT CURED.
Steve, type II DM can be cured in some cases by diet and exercise leading to weight loss. Not all cases will be cured, but even if not cured often they will need less meds and insulin. The drug companies would love to invent a cure for diabetes as this would be very valuable...the inventor would become rich. Also, if someone could invent a pill that isn't harmful and lets people eat whatever we want and never be harmed or gain weight, he/she would be rich. It's just not so simple. It's also not a conspiracy to keep people on pills. Unfortunately, you can't change your genetics and with age and weight gain many people will continue to get diabetes...for some people the pancreas cannot keep up with the amount of insulin it is needing to put out as people gain weight and eat more.
Silly. I used to work for several companies in Big Pharm. There is far more money in treating people daily for LIFE than treating them once for a cure. It is like cars–chrysler made much more money when they sold crappy cars because their customers had to turn them in every few years to even get any decent mileage out of them–when Toyota started making quality cars that LASTED and Chrysler had to compete–they lost a lot of car addicts–better to have a product people keep having to buy than one they buy once and don't need anymore. it is called CAPITALISM and is why we have products like Claritin, Prevacid, etc.
What did you expect? Look at her, look at how she cooks. FAT – CARBS – FAT – CARBS – FAT.. DM is the natural progression and eventual death of her pancreas. She will need to change EVERYTHING i her life in order to stay a type 2, and avoid that daily needle – that's no guarantee.
I see a new cooking show on the horizon for her, The Paula Dean Low Carb Low Fat cooking hour!
Maybe she should just shut her mouth and move on ... taking DRUG money is unethical, she should just go far far away... what a southern loser – hey maybe she should go on dancing with the stars or the biggest loser...she's the BIG "L"
Attempting to equate the recipes that Paula promotes as the same as Heroin or Child Molesters is beyond irrational. What a bunch of food nazis. Have you ever heard of personal responsibility? Nobody forces you to watch her show or eat the food she displays!!
No soup for you....back of the line!
Nice Face, scary
no rest for the weary. Paula is being ripped a new one. Talkin about having your cake and your pie, too.
As a former obese person, 10 years ago, I got fed up with being obese and started my journey of making better choices in life that resulted in losing 80 lbs. Making better food choices and limiting those not-so-better food choices really turned me around. Most importantly, I started exercising, and now I exercise 7 days a week. I've been doing P90X for over a year now, and today at age 45, I have more strength, stamina, definition, and six-pack abs! There is no magic to it. My daily mantra is "Eat less, exercise more"! Good physical fitness and health are good things, but being able to wear physique-flattering clothing is PRICELESS!
Good luck Paula. I wish you all the best.
Well said sir.
Right there with you Byteme! I lost 72 pounds 10 years ago and it's still off at 50 years old. Diet and exercise. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. Keep up the great work!
I dont feel sorry for her at all.
That's because you are heartless jerk.
u guys are so mean... paula does her show to teach ppl good recipes she is one of may favorites on the food network i have learned alot on her show.... and just for the record for u ignorent ppl out there... it has no meaning of what u eat it is how much of it u eat... so u can eat fattning food but u cant eat alot of it... did u know that if u eat to many fruits and veggies u can still gain weight... so before u start talking about how u dont feel sry for her she never asked u to feel sry for her for one and for 2 if u dont like what she makes and how she makes it than dont watch her show so with that said have a nice day... good luck paula i love your show
Why is someone bad for not feeling sorry for someone who knowingly stuffed their face full of everything we know leads to Type II diabetes? Paula is not stupid and made a choice. Now she has to live with it. And your tax dollars will end up paying for it when she's goes on Medicare!
I doubt she wants your sympathy or anyone else's.
I am a nurse and I am glad everyone is finally talking about TV Chefs and their recipes being unhealthy. In addition to talking about butter and bacon (saturated fat) and sugar contributing to the development of Type 2 diabetes, it also contributes to coronary artery, obesity and many other chronic diseases. In addition people ought to be outraged at the amount of salt many of the Chef's use. I don't often sit and watch cooking shows, but I can tell you when see I Rachel Ray, Lydia and the Barefoot Contessa, adding salt to every recipe I cringe. With coronary artery disease being the # 1 killer of women, I would think all the Chef's could come up with healthier versions of their recipes. There are other herbs and spices that can be used in the place of salt.
Please. Diet and exercise have EVERYTHING to do with type 2 diabetes. Like it or not, she is a role model for many people. She owes it to herself as well as others to promote an active lifestyle and a healthy diet consisting of very minimal (or no) sugar and animal fats, rather than popping a pill. This is all about making herself, and the pharmaceutical companies, even richer. It's appalling.
Diet and exercise do not have everything to do with type 2 diabetes. My dad died last year from a stroke caused by undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. He lead an active healthy lifestyle, was not overweight or obese, and sugar was the last thing you'd expect him to have a problem with. My entire life he never ate sweets, and his idea of dessert was a cup of black coffee.
His death came as a shock to all of us, as none of us ever expected him to have something like diabetes.
If your dad had diabetes.....have your Blood Sugar tested every year.....have "fasting & A1c" done.
It is not "sweets alone which lead to diabetes it is SUGAR–which mostly is in the form of carbohydrates (which are actually complex sugars) your dad could indeed become a Type II diabetic and never eat sweets but I bet he ate bread, potatoes, cereals, rice and pasta ALL which are full of UNHEALTHY carbohydrates high on the glycemic index and all which in the body break down to PURE sugar.
Type 2 diabetes isn't caused by diet or obesity. Its a genetically linked slowly progressive disease. You can delay the onset with a healthy lifestyle. Can somewhat control the insulin levels with diet & exercise. Many thin & average size people have type 2 diabetes and have no idea they have it. Show no symptoms and may never be properly diagnosed. A lot of heart attacks and strokes are contributed to undiagnosed diabetes. Learn and read about diabetes. Most Americans believe the myths of the disease and know nothing about it except snippets of inaccurate information.
I wonder how many people she's given this disease to through her wonderfully fat and sweet recipes.. ?
The real 'shocking' news would have been if they reported that she did NOT have Type II Diabetes. One need only watch a single episode of her show to realize her recipes are a recipe for pathological disaster, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, congestive heart failure, stroke, gallstones and gallbladder disease, gout, osteoarthritis, hyperlipidemia, hypertension and of course, diabetes. I'd much rather see her working as a spokesperson for a healthier lifestyle than as a paid spokesperson for the drug Victoza.
You forgot... Diarrhea.
And who knows how many of these other health complications she might have...guess we'll find out in another 3 years
Woman betta' pay up mah monies for she get pimp slapped! Ah wud knock her grill straight to the grizzle if she trah and skip by her pimp with no royalty monies in hand.
Awesome! Just Awesome ^^
Looking at her picture, I cannot help but be reminded of Heath Ledger's portrayal of The Joker.
What's next the Marlboro Man buying stock in a chemotherapy company?
not gonna happen he died yrs ago
Mrs. Dean perhaps you should try eating a piece of broccoli...you know, a vegetable....and stop consuming bacon and butter cheeseburgers sandwiched between 2 pound cakes!
Hmmm!!!! Bacon & Butter 2 of the best reasons not to be a Vegetarian. Wouls also include Sausage, Steak, Venison, Pigs in general, Lamb, the list goes on........
We are so glad that Paula has stepped forward to take some of the heat off of us and our Over-Inflated estimate numbers. She has been a real Sport in inducing FEAR into All Americans minds as we have been instructed to do by the Obama and Bush Administrations. Thank You Paula, Keep up the Great Work.
boy do you sound pathetic
Overweight conditions that cause diabetes are real, it affects millions and needs to be talked about
Enough with obama and bush rhetoric already
We are The U.S. Government, Would We lie to you fellow Citizen? Have you gotten your Flu Shot yet? We can't afford an Epidemic.
I'm shocked at the responses to this article. Apparently, people are now blaming American obesity on a cook known for creating unhealthy recipes. Really? Whatever happened to personal accountability? We choose what goes in our mouths. Period. If you're fat and unhealthy it's up to you to change it, not a tv personality. My dog, do you all need someone to hold your hand and walk you through life, reminding you to eat your vegetables and play outside? Grow up. Paula Deen didn't make anybody fat.
THANK YOU! Well said!
I think you're missing the point most people are making. She is two-faced. For years she fed on a diet that was extremely detrimental to her own health and was in a state of denial (to herself) about it. Now she has to face the consequences and is still not admitting to her own mistakes but instead is jumping into bed with the drug companies to turn a profit off this misfortune, and, while being a high-profile individual we all must be subject to her over-exposure. SHE thinks she's going to be able to tell YOU how to make healthful choices with her newly-acquired magic pill. Puuuthetic YAowl!
I don't think I missed the point, or that I in any way insinutaed that I think it's good to partner up with Big Medicine. I just think it's ridiculous for anyone to suggest that she's somehow responsible for a rise in others' health problems.
Agreed. People in this country are not moving around, not eating in moderation and eat processed foods. Processed foods! If more people actually knew the basics of cooking and prepared their own meals – that would be one good step in the right direction. Paula Deen is not our problem. However, I do think partnering up with a drug company is a big sell-out and it does not, in my opinion, make her a good role model for those who need to make diet/exercise changes in their lives.
REALLY?! The woman cooked a cheeseburger and served it between two Krispy Kreme glazed donuts! She's made and encouraged many, many people towards obesity, which damaged her own health. Rather than own it, she continued to make money promoting her high fat diet. Now she's made a deal with a pharmaceutical company and is making MORE MONEY representing them. If you haven't figured out a long time ago that she's extremely greedy, you're blind. She promotes her family, husband – they've all made money off of the crap she cooks. Shame on her.
REALLY. Did you eat any Krispy Kreme burgers? Unlikely. Name me one person who's gotten fat solely because of Paula Deen. Unless she personally drove to someone's house and force-fed them biscuits, it didn't happen. Greedy? Sure. Responsible for what people choose to eat? Please.
Anyway, people who have a clue about nutrition know it's not about the fat, anyway. It's about the processing. Full fat butter won't hurt anyone who keeps a clean diet and gets some exercise. Physical activity + natural foods= good health.
Well, despite what we think of her holding back for three years and now, wanting to develop recipes for other Type II diabetics, diabetes is usually hereditary, not from what you eat. That said, once you find out you have it or are on your way (insulin resistance, glucose intolerance), you have to cut your carb intake. Butter and other fats, protein and vegetables are you friend, so, maybe she'll come up with some good ones. But seriously, to the body, it doesn't know where its sugar is coming from, whether you eat a piece of cake, a piece of good quality whole wheat bread or oatmeal (uh, yeah, I just said oatmeal) - it all turns into sugar. There's a good site called blood sugar 101 dot com. Good info there. And yes. When you are fighting this disease, for which there IS no cure, only control, you must watch what you eat and you must get out there and move it!
Forget it. I just went to the site. Disgusting. She's making the same food but using fat-free and salt-free ingredients. Look at the labels on a fat-free product and a fat containing product and compare them. The fat-free one contains...wait for it...more carbs! Why? When they remove the fat, they have to add other things to the product to make it "better" yet they make it worse. I say, go with proteins, butter, olive oil, green vegetables and berries for your fruit and you'll have tastier food and better bloodwork! Ever taste any of that nasty fat-free stuff? Ugh...
Hmm... a morbidly obese person who makes a living talking about super high calorie food? I am SHOCKED!
Go ahead use my recipes and eat a gallon of butter a day ya'll. And as you slowly die from it, I'll get a kick back from your misfortune.
no sh1t, the fact that she is partnering with the drug company and simultaneously being a horrible role model.in terms of being healthy and exercising good judgement is disgusting.
Alot of people over 60 develope diabetes 2. My two aunts and grandma had it. My grandma was SKINNY! My aunt lived to be 93 and my grandma who raised 10 children after her husband died, lived to be 86.
Regardless of how you get it; you should be proactive in living a healthy lifestyle. I feel the main reason people are upset is that she is saying the solution is drugs by signing with this company. Why not endorse fitness, healthy eating, and awareness. I don't think she realizes the health/organic food market is flourishing right now. Promote something good and still make your money. Just poor decision making in many peoples eyes.
This is why I cannot take control of my life!!!!!!!!!!
People like Paula telling me what to eat!!!!!!!
Oh, I need a government that can tell me what to eat, when to eat, how to eat. Also, what my kids should eat.
Oh, now I feel so much better. I am scared of all those scary choices. Please mr. Obama, just tell me how to live!
Right, because it's a bad thing to push better health for Americans and their children. What a dolt you are.
Obama, BARF.
It's funny how right wing nutjobs like you want to dissolve governmental involvement in our lives when it suits you, but then you want government to tell gays, lesbians, polygamists, etc to stop living their lives as they see fit. you can't have it both ways, hypocrite.
Huh?
Nobody is forced to cook the way she cooks or eat what she eats. Anyone with common sense knows that eating those kinds of foods are bad for you and can contribute to gaining weight, diabetes, and other health problems. She is not responsible for the way others eat, any more than lets say, the chefs on Iron Chef are responsible for what you eat when they cook unhealthy foods. Or McDonalds advertising a Big Mac. You're free to choose. And she's not obligated to share the condition of her health with anyone. Stop taking away personal responsibility and trying to place it on others.
It's all about money. Obviously, the only reason she kept quiet for three years was to not frighten away viewers from her shows. What a faker.
Would you let a convicted child molester teach at your children's school? Then why would you listen to this Sow tell you how to manage diabetes. this woman should be on TLC (Terrible Life Choices)
Hate much?
no, not much. just her.
Anthony Bordain as correct. She spews in essence poison that just takes longer to kill. Very stupid people follow her. OK, great. More social security for me when they drop dead. So gross. As bad as a narcotics dealer in my book. And what is with those teeth?!
What, because her career as a denture spokesperson never took-off?
I can't imagine that her deliciously sweet and moist supermarket special iced carrot cake could be bad for anybody.... (sarc)
The United States needs to add statistics to the areas its population needs to learn in order to graduate. It is just not true that only fat people get diabetes. I personally know actual thin (not even normal weight) people who developed the disease in mid-life. They had a strong family history of the disease and were at high risk of developing it, despite their size. The original advice about diet was intended to help people take control of the factors they could control, but that doesn't mean they are the only factors at play. The only thing blaming Paula Deen for her illness does is demonstrate a disgusting lack of compassion for a serious disease that could one day strike you too, even if you are in perfect health while reading this article today.
You realize how ignorant you sound. This woman clearly had it coming. She ignored all the warning signs and medical evidence and continued to eat in the same fashion. How much compassion would you have for a drunk driver that wrecked their car?
Paula Deen is as superficial has they come and i despise that fake southern accent.... yaaaaaall.
BwwhahAhahAHAHahHAhahaHAhahHAH!!!!!
Would have been nice had she decided to be a spokeswoman for LIFESTYLE CHANGE!
Does anyone see a problem here? A person with a mass public following who broadcasts recipes high in diabetes causing ingredients will now be making money off people who already have or who acquire diabetes?
Is she going to make her food even fattier and higher in sugar now that she'll make money off the diabetes patients using victoza?
I can see her next episode: today's recipe is pure lard and sugar. make sure you get a second and third helping now, y'all!
She would have got a better reception had she admitted that the lifestyle choices she made had a direct effect on her present condition. She should be promoting lifestyle change not complacency in the face of adversity.
I've read through the responses on this page and it is unbelievable that people are actually defending her. Sure, she's free to make her own choices and you're free to turn the channel, but defend her? Would you defend a heroin addict that continually abuses drugs. YOU PEOPLE ARE ENABLERS! And clearly she is only trying to profit from this which is even more disgusting than her food. When will we step-up as a society and weed out the 'celebrities' that dumb-down our culture and put money at the forefront?
Well said! We've made a dangerous habit of justifying, excusing and accepting behaviors that are morally wrong, unhealthy or lazy. We've gone too far down the "follow your feelings" path and strayed too far from the "do what you know is right regardless of your feelings".
What you're saying is that you want everyone to do what YOU think is right. Who are you to say? Take responsibility for your own actions/choices. That's what you should be concentrating on. Not dictating the actions of others.
@Alaskan, actually, I'm not giving any advice to anyone at all, nor am I trying to persuade anyone to do anything, directly or indirectly.
It's just my own social commentary. Want some advice, lighten up.
@Alaskan, again. Wait a minute. I just got the joke. LMHAO ! thanks, former Governor Palin!
Best wishes with the your whirlwind professional life.
Alaskan: Then again, Deen has a conflict of interest issue–you know that thing where you are in two or more businesses and the manipulation in one will help you to unfairly profit in the other? Usually we find that unethical and the fact is–Paula will be making money promoting a pill to aid a problem she (on the other side of the issue) is helping to create. That IS pretty horrible.
Shame on her.
I find it sad that there is such a lack of compassion for someone with diabetes. Yes, overeating causes obesity, smoking causes lung cancer, and alcohol causes liver disease. Most of us have done these things in moderation and had no ill effects.
I do think Paula has a right to her privacy but I also believe she owes a debt of honesty to her followers. When she found out that she had the disease it would have been advisable to share it and show how she planned to make her changes to a healthier lifestyle. Waiting for a deal with a drug company was definitely bad form.
I do wish you well Paula and hope you will do something good for your viewers by showing them a healthy way to cook good southern food. For your sake as well as your viewers.
Right to privacy? She's providing this info herself so she can launch her new career as a drug spokesman. And since when is fried butter, Krispy Kreme hamburgers, and Cream Cheese bacon dip southern food? Have you been to the south? This woman knows nothing of Southern food and should be peddling samples at Costco on Sunday afternoons
Actually, I am from the deep south and was brought up cooking much of the way Paula did with lots of butter and sugar. Most of us have taken our favorite southern recipes that were handed down by our grandmothers and made heart healthy changes to them. Back in the day when many of these heart stopping recipes were first made they were made with all natural ingredients and the good southern folks that ate them worked hard in the fields for 10 hours a day and had little reason to worry about obesity or diabetes.
Shilling for a drug company and promoting the unhealthy diet that will eventually make you need the drug company's product. Isn't this a conflict of interest? Bless her ethics-violating-heart.
Privacy, my aunt shirley! This woman will now be making money from a diabetes drug company. Her recipes will now be making her richer in yet another way!
What a joke
When Al Roker asked her if she is getting paid for her services on this new website, her reply was, "Yes, just as you are getting paid for what you do!" Wouldn't it be nice if Miss Dean came clean and just said, "I ate too much. I cooked with unhealthy ingredients. And now I'm paying the price." But no, she is milking it for all it's worth. A better reply would have been, "Yes, I'm getting paid, but I'm donating my entire salary to diabetes research!"
I'm sure Emerril Lagasse has a few abnormal blood chemistries as well.
And lastly, could this be the epiphany for all the celebrity chefs out there? Who know, maybe Anthony Bourdan will reveal that he has cirrhosis, but is now a spokesperson for Budweiser.
I really like Paula–but this is like being an arsonist who starts the fire then saying you also are on the volunteer fire brigade who gets to put this out–from just a class or decency standpoint, this is bad news.
Did anybody read this article??? She has had this for THREE years and has just recently signed with a DRUG company.
MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY. Money makes the world go around, the world go around, the world go around. Paula is NOT trying to "help" anyone but HERSELF. As if she doesn't have ENOUGH money already. If she does advocate "lighter" recipes in the future, it is ONLY because of MONEY, not because she "cares" about you. Wake up. WAKE UP.
Money?? What are you all talking about?? Her income from signing with Novo Nordisk will only cover one meal for her!
OK, what financial interest would she have in doing recipes that DON'T contribute to diabetes now that she skimms off the tip of a diabetes drug company?
So true. She would have taken this to info to her forthcoming grave if she had not signed on with the drug companies.
She didn't come forward because people would have stopped watching her and she would have lost millions. She kept people watching and cooking the same fat crap that got her into this situation for three years before she told others that could have suffered as well and could have made changes three years ago!
Anything to make a buck
Let's be clear...she deserves it. I am glad she has it because maybe it will help wake up America to it's issues with diet and exercise. The only thing that makes me angry is now she will get to be a corporate shilling whore for big Pharma.I hope she loses a limb so everybody can see what her lifestyle has caused.
Come on- does she even look healthy? Who in their right mind would follow the cooking advice of someone who is 50 pounds overweight! You are what you eat.
You can't trust a skinny cook.
Is anyone seriously surprised by this? Hate to say it, but I'm fairly shocked Paula's still breathing. Her apparent smoking habit coupled with her incredibly unhealthy diet equals someone who probably shouldn't have made it past 50.
I'd like to add that I sincerely hope that Paula is doing more to battle her obesity than "teaming up with a pharmaceutical company." LIke you know, eating healthy and working out. Non fun stuff like that.
Anything to make a buck.
Paula Deen knew she had diabetes 3 years ago, yet she continued to pitch these fattening foods. She worked on a "deal" that would continue to "feed" her. She should have been shut down long ago. I was never a fan.
Survival of the fattest.....oh wait, no, Fittest. Goodbye Paula.
the real victim not covered in the article is the abuse she's inflicted on her toilet bowl for years with all the butter/cheese/starch/bacon/cream cheese she eats!
HAHAHA!
WOW!!! What a shocker!!!! Really!!! What a joke!
It's time to start taking a look at all the preservative crap in our food along with fluoridated water as a cause for the epidemic of diabetes and Cancer.
Preservatives may be unhealthy and I have some concerns about fluoridation, but neither cause diabetes. Diabetes is a lifestyle disease. Yes, there is some genetic component, but overeating is the main cause. If you want to avoid diabetes don't eat like Paula Deen.
Type II diabetes is mostly caused by a person's diet and it can be fix, or at least alleviated.
Here is a medical paper from "Nutrition and Metabolism" in 2008 that shows reducing carbs alleviates or even reverses type II diabetes.
http://www.biomedcentral.com/1743-7075/5/9
If you have type II diabetes, you can improve your life.
Not true at all that is a myth. Type 2 diabetes is probably more genetic than diet related, the same as Type 1. However, you can delay the onset and control it with proper diet & a healthy lifestyle. Also you may not need insulin if you eat properly and exercise. You can't eat your way into Type 2, but you can improve your chances of not getting it and the severity of it. Proper nutrition and exercise. This is according to John Hopkins and American Diabetes Association. Most overweight people never develop diabetes. If they did, 2/3 of the American population would be diabetic. Americans need to know that they are at risk if they're thin or overweight.
Link reagarding myths about diabetes.American Diabetes Association
http://bit.ly/AjeDbK
You CAN eat your way into type II and everyone in my family has done that (as have the generations before them) except for 1 brother and I –what is our secret–beginning in our 30s–a low carb diet we are the only 2 not to EVER have had it and of the ones who did, one went low carb and now she has REVERSED her diabetes and no longer has to take medication for it. I don't care if the AMA itself came out with myth busters–as wrong as these orgs are about every other year–anecdotal and experiential data trumps "myths busters" from the DAoA any day.
She is a disgrace to real chefs and real quality food.
Not a chef – just a COOK!!!
The best point of all. The word 'chef' has no meaning anymore.
Ok she has Type 2 diabetis and she will have to treat it....she does NOT make people eat her food and as individuals everyone has a choice to either cook healthy or heavy.... it's like this woman has been held accountable for lack of accountability that we all have on what we eat. She chose a heavy diet, so be it...there are consequences for everything. I love Paula and I wish her well....and for those that think she cooks heavy, easy not to watch her show.
I bet she could mow the grass at Augusta National with those chompers. Lol.
Only if it's deep frahed in buuuutter.
too funny!
I wish her well and that she is able to control her diabetes.
My guess is that she had for-warnings about diabetes before she crossed the medical threshold for being one. The condition is called Prediabetes. This usually happens for several years and it is the time to work on diet and exercise to prevent it from becoming diabetes. I wonder what her doctor has been telling her for the last few years and how she reacted. I wish her well and she should try to control it by diet and exercise. Go to the Mayo clinic site and you can read about prediabetes.
She gon' put some butta on that Victoza too now ain't she?
oh no you didn't! Hilarious!
There's ethics involved here. Privacy, yes. Chef, yes. But she's made millions off teaching people how to cook unhealthy food... that's contributed in some sense to increase in Type 2 Diabetes. Has to have. It's common sense. How much, maybe not much, if no one pays her any attention... but she has made an impact. And now, she's going to take MORE of your money to sell diabetic friendly foods? You tell me, if a private company sold you something that risked your health, then tried to make you pay to fix it... yes, it was you who chose to buy that thing, so you are definitely responsible... BUT, where's the ethics in this? She's not a hero or proper representation of the Diabetes epidemic. She's just a person trying to get richer off others. Stop glorifying celebrities.
Did you just try to partially blame her for the rise in diabetes? LOL No one has to cook what she cooks. If they're too stupid to watch their own diets, it's their fault. Idiot.
I have to agree. I have watched her show a few times because it's fascinating to see all those calories packed into one dish. But there's no way I would ever eat it! It's on me to know when sugar, butter, lard, crisco and caramel shouldn't be mixed not hers.
Yeah did you actually read what I wrote? Idiot... I said "probably not much impact but it's some". What you don't think this and encouraging overeating "Man vs. Food" and the likes have no impact what so ever? MORON.... By the way, I've never watched on episode of her show... closest was when we walked by her restaurant in Savannah during a visit.
Deep-fried butter in caramel sauce will do that.
How wrong can you be? Many countries that gob butter on everything have low diabetes and no health problems.
The difference is they don't sit on their fat bee-hinds all day in front of computers or TV's and let their bodies go to pot. The majority of people in other countries don't have cars, they walk or ride everywhere. The difference is, they exercise off that fat and those carbs.
Your defense of the deep-fried butter in caramel sauce industry is admirable in a business oriented anathema sort of way.
Not sure where you get your information re: countries that eat a lot of butter etc. and have no diabetes or health problems. I believe you are misguided. As the world "fattens", type 2 diabetes is on the rise- everywhere.
for example?
EllenL
. As the world "fattens", type 2 diabetes is on the rise- everywhere." that is not due to fat (fat does not make you fat it is due to refined and processed carbs, meat and veggies with growth hormones and our propensity to process and spread our coca cola and fast food franchises EVERYWHERE. Traditional cuisines of France, Italy and other countries cook with lard and butter and are not fat nor do they have high cholesterol–they begin to get it when they eat our imported McDonalds and Burger King junk.
Hot coffee in my lap will burn me? Cigarettes cause cancer? Alcohol can lead to alcoholism? Sticking your tongue into the electrical outlet will hurt? And here I was thinking that shoving my gob in a plate of fatty food would be good for me... I guess I need the government or some attorneys to step in and handle my accountability for me.
I wish Paula the best. But seriously, "bacon-wrapped macaroni & cheese squares??!!!???" But Paula is simply riding the wave of mega-death restaurants these days, which seem to be competing to brag the total callories, total carbs, and total cholesterol they can pack into your mouth with each bite. Of course it is delicious, too bad it will kill you.
Obesity + smoking = potential major health problems. Throw in genetics and you're screwed.
One's physical condition is private. She had no responsibility to tell anyone that she is diabetic. the fact that her cooking is high in fat and calories is something that anyone who pays attention knows. You shouldn't need her telling you her physical problems to notice that. Type II diabetes has more causes than being a chef who makes fatty food. some diabetics are actually slender and active people. I don't eat her food, but I do support her right to privacy.
I personally feel that anyone with a public following has a responsibiliy to act in the best interest of the public. While her health is indeed a personal matter, I find it extremely hypocritical that her dietary habits led to her acquiring diabetes, she hid it and knowingly continued to broadcast the type of recipes that led to her illness.
idiot....people are responsible for what they put in their mouths. Paula Deen's not forcing anyone to eat.
I'm wondering if for the past three years, she was eating her own food. With diabetes, I sincerely doubt it. Yea, there's an ethics void here.
Paula is a great gal and the epitome of constructive optimism. She doesn't pretend to know everything and is still learning about life herslef. Our body chemistry evolves with age, what is perfectly healthy, even beneificial, for you when you're younger, may not work too well as you age. Most people have to find this out by experience. I'm looking forward to learning more from Paula as she confronts her new challenges.
HaHa!
You are what you eat... that's all there really is to it.
Does this mean I'll still be assaulted by her denture-clad-wig-wearing face every time i'm at the grocery store checkout?
Whoa there big mama!!!!
She's lying to herself or her fans when she says diet is only "part" of the problem. It's ALL of the problem. I nearly got into trouble with rising blood-sugar levels, but when I cut out most carbohydrates (mostly bread, rice, and sugary soda), the problem disappeared in six months. I also lost a lot of weight.
And, I agree that she's double-dipping. Watch her show and learn how to make super-fatty goods, buy her cookbooks and learn how to make fatty foods, and then buy her diabetes medicine and blood pressure medicine to control your fat-induced health problems.
Sorry Frank but diet alone does not cause diabetes:
Diabetes is caused by a problem in the way your body makes or uses insulin. Insulin is needed to move blood sugar (glucose) into cells, where it is stored and later used for energy.
When you have type 2 diabetes, your fat, liver, and muscle cells do not respond correctly to insulin. This is called insulin resistance. As a result, blood sugar does not get into these cells to be stored for energy.
When sugar cannot enter cells, high levels of sugar build up in the blood. This is called hyperglycemia.
Type 2 diabetes usually occurs slowly over time. Most people with the disease are overweight when they are diagnosed. Increased fat makes it harder for your body to use insulin the correct way.
Type 2 diabetes can also develop in people who are thin. This is more common in the elderly.
Family history and genes play a large role in type 2 diabetes. Low activity level, poor diet, and excess body weight around the waist increase your risk.
At least 80% of Type II diabetes IS diet related. The insensitivity of the body to insulin (insulin resistance) is normally caused by the pancreas secreting too much to handle an overabundance of carbohydrate or sugars. This is diet related. When th cellular receptors burn out or continue to have to get massive dosages of insulin due to resistance over time, eventually the pancreas cannot keep up OR the insulin is not sufficient–then you have diabetes and when it is not controlled through diet or cannot be for all intents and purposes you are looking at Type I diabetes. Type II is related to diet in all but a few cases for the rest, what you eat and how your body has to address that over time, will determine whether Type II diabetes is in your future and THAT will happen regardless of whether your mom and dad had it or it does not normally run in your family. Most of what you said is correct but it is only half the story for the majority of Americans (barring those born with metabolic resistance) getting Type II diabetes is avoidable provided the right kind of diet is pursued as a lifestyle and not a whim.
All of your statements are correct. The body produces insulin, which give the signal for tissues like muscle to take in the sugar so it can be cleared from the blood supply. Insulin resistance occurs when the bodies tissues become increasingly resistant to insulin's signal to remove glucose from the blood.
On low carb diets, less glucose is in the blood supply so the need for tissue to clear glucose from the blood is decreased. People on with type II diabetes have been effectively cured from symptoms by simply reducing the amount of carbohydrate they eat.
http://www.biomedcentral.com/1743-7075/5/9
Here is one of many medical papers that show that reducing carbohydrate consumption improves metabolic syndrome (diabetes is classified as a symptom of metabolic syndrome).
http://www.nutritionandmetabolism.com/content/5/1/36
Here is another paper that show a reversal of type II diabetes with a decrease in carbohydrate consumption.
Right you are QueenBee. I almost laughed when she said it wasn't a death sentence. I'm not sure why she would think it was, unless her Dr. tried to scare her into exercise (by the looks she won't listen). Type II Diabetes is very controllable. I get a little ticked ever time I hear someone making a statement such as her's. Take your medication as directed. Get off your butt and take a good long walk (you should have some sweat with that walk) everyday. Eat smart (ya...listen to that little voice in your head, it knows the right food from the wrong food and the too much food to the just right amount). Guess what...do this and you will feel better than you have in years. Take it from a Type I diabetic for 27yrs and counting (Not lovin' it, but doin' it). I wish the management of my health was as easy as is with Type II....
I love her cooking because it's delicious and terrible for you. Does that mean I should eat it every day, and never exercise? Of course not. It's sad that there are people out there who cannot think for themselves. These are the same folks who say fast-food restaurants should stop marketing to children, when all they have to do is have the will-power to tell their children 'no.' Unfortunately, these weakling parents want the fast-food every bit as much as their children. It's the same thing for Deen's cooking. They think it's terrible she shows you how to cook delicious unhealthy food because they feel guilty about replicating it. Sheeple!
Make it mandatory that all cooks at the end the show should tell the total calories in each serving portion of the food they made.
Calories are not the issue–the type of carbohydrates and how much are. Right now, over 62% of all adults in the US are overweight–most are on low calorie or high carb diets or eating regimens–high carbs with the focus on processed and refined carbs (even if low in calories) will cause insulin to be used as those carbs (like table sugar) break down into pure sugar. ONLY INSULIN can handle blood sugar–without it, cells can get no nutrients from sugar and it is like a poison. Without insulin within a matter of weeks you would DIE. Protein has little to no natural sugar. Neither do fats. Sweets and Carbs like potatoes, rice, grains and pasta are full of sugar and when broken down (in about 2 hours after ingestion) Insulin must be release to handle that. Too many carbs for too many years means the insulin receptors can be burnt out OR not effective–that is not just related to calories which has to do with energy output and muscle exertion–it has to do with what is IN food and in carbs is a whole lot of good stuff and ultimately (as it breaks down) a whole lot of BAD stuff–ie sugar. FYI–the most preferred substance for your organs to use are KETONES or burning fat–the second most preferred and most preferred for muscles is SUGAR but all sugar or carbs eaten that are not immediately used are automatically stored as FAT. So much for just "calories"
Your argument is based on the premise that all adults in society have the psychological capacity to make wise choices (self-control, desire to be healthy...). Unfortunately, not all people in our society have this capacity.
Look @ the picture at the top of the article....'nuff said.
I agree, she needed to get it to understand what she was doing to people but I raised some good points in my blog. Please read them here: http://toomuchfire.com/2012/01/17/paula-deen-welcome-to-the-world-of-diabetus-bitch/. Thanks!
I've watched her show, and it's JMHO but I've never seen a recipe I want to replicate. IMHO it's revolting.
well played
Perhaps, we should look at the two faced messages Paula doles out. Eat like a pig and then buy my sponsored meds...or perhaps we could just look at the two (maybe three) layers of makeup the tv studios cake on (no pun intended) to her face to sell her show, books and restaurants.
well gee, she puts butter on everything she puts in her mouth, even the kitchen sink!! if it fits
Let's have a little compassion for the lady.
People would be surprised how many childhood cancer survivors there are, not to mention diabetes, but without insurance companies being forced to sell them insurance under the new health care plan, i.e. Obamacare, they could never be insured. Companies wouldn't even hire them, too costly on their group insurance plans.
Lynn, what does your post have to do with this article?
No, sorry, no compassion... she brought the disease on herself and she has been educating people in cooking extremely unhealthy foods, so, in essence she has probably helped others to develop the disease as well... and now she wants to sell them anti-diabetes supplements??? Hey folks let me sell you this toxic poison to swallow... did you drink it? Good! Now let me sell you the antidote!
Actually read about type 2 diabetes. Most Americans have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to type 2 diabetes. You don't get it because your overweight. Its mostly a genetic disease. Its actually more genetically linked than Type 1 diabetes. You can control it through diet and exercise but you can develop it regardless of size or eating habits. Lifestyle habits can delay the onset and effect its development but doesn't always prevent it. Most overweight Americans never develop diabetes.
According to the American Diabetes Association

Why have ANY compassion for this merchant of death? If she had simply and innocently acquired a condition, perhaps. But she didn't merely do it to herself. To get rich, she has encouraged millions upon millions of others to take the same risks through the same behavior without sufficiently (if at all) warning them of the consequences.
Don't forget.., this is the cheerleader for "EAT that pat of buttah!" and someone who bored one night because her harbor pilot husband was working odd hours and too tired (or selective) to give her sex, sat around ogling a box of Krispy Kremes, remembered her exhortation "you just can't add too much sweet or salt", and promptly fried up and ate a sandwich of a burger on two donut "buns" Then woke him and fed him one. Then during a TV interview with a NY Times food columnist declared it the most delicious thing she ever ate and encouraged all viewers to try at least one some time in their life (Frito Lay ad "bet you can't eat just one" comes to mind). . Still your hero deserving compassion or merchant of death deserving opprobrium?

so well put and honest. this b**** is in bed with the drug companies now, and the rest of these uneducated fools that defend her can't see her agenda. GO AWAY PAULA DEAN!
Compassion for her health, OK, fine. However, her professional life is 100% bull excrement, and I'm not talking about her cooking. She's making tons of money broadcasting recipes that contribute to diabetes and now making tons of money being a spokesperson for a diabetes company. This is a conflict of interests.
Why would one have compassion for someone who profits from making others unhealthy?
Not shocked and I really hope that this might be a wake up call for some folks. I know that often when I cook "home made" food I feel like I'm doing something good for myself but it's easy to forget that just because it's made at home doesn't make it good for you. I hope she does eventually change her lifestyle – if not the food she fuels her body with because I do like having her around – she's an entertaining TV cook and I think she could find a way to make good for you food that tastes good and wouldn't be seen as "too fancy" by my kids or hubby.
I think the thing that is shocking about this article is that not only is Paula Deen advocating to eat poorly but she cops out by saying "I'm not your doctor." Furthermore, Paula Deen than goes on by saying, don't exercise or try to eat healthy, just take a pill and everything will be OK. The burden on society known as Paula Deen should simply hit the treadmill for a few minutes a day and eat some vegetables.
Now she's going to make a bunch of money supporting the drug companies?! this women is the devil in disguise. I wonder how she'll do her show after they amputate a leg and she goes blind. Burn in Hell Pig Witch.
When she gets to hell you can share your room with her.
as long as i can do the cooking.......zzzziing! and point.
"While Deen admitted that diet is a factor in the development of the disease, saying it's "part of the puzzle," she also cited genetics, lifestyle, stress and age as factors. "
What does she think they mean by lifestyle? Food! And to pretend that it is only "part of the puzzle" is incredibly detrimental to the process of trying to educate people about the harm obesity can cause to your body. Maybe she should be coming forward with the purpose of telling people that eating the way she cooks she be a once in awhile thing, not telling them that it's only a "piece" of the problem, but you can just take drugs to fix it.
No, Paula it's that spare tire you're wearing around your mid-section.
She's lying to herself or her fans when she says diet is only "part" of the problem. It's ALL of the problem. I nearly got into trouble with rising blood-sugar levels, but when I cut out most carbohydrates (mostly bread, rice, and sugary soda), the problem disappeared in six months. i couldnt resist clicking on the headline to this article when i saw it. This 'woman' is disgusting and an embarrassment to the food service industry. I've never liked her cooking or show and she does a disservice to her viewers who 'enjoy' the garbage she cooks. IMO anyone who actually defends this pig must be as fat and disgusting as her (people of wal-mart type) and in complete denial of their own health assuming they consume the same trash as her. She gets what she deserves.
WHOA! Did she run over your dog or something? You've clearly got a beef with her but the anger is a bit over the top for someone whom I'm guessing you don't personally know. Also, you can enjoy watching someone cook something or try a recipie out without having to be "fat" "wal-mart types". I enjoy her show (and GASP! shop at Walmart) but am not part of that assumed "fat" population. I eat heathy. Let's not make huge assumptions about people based on what they watch.
congrats, you're the exception to the rule. like i said, just my opinion.
And this is news why?
She might be big, fat, and diabetic, but I'll still let her sample my kielbasa and sour kraut any day of the week! ;)
Even Paula would not want to eat your nasty rotten crap Frank.
Everyone get a life. some of you all are degrading and will go out and eat the same food at a restaurant or something else. I love Paula and I wish her well. In this life, we ALL do things that is not good for our health. I know some folks who do not eat fats like Paula but they SMOKE and DRINK. What about the folks who are eat right but they TEXT WHILE DRIVING. what about people addicted to pain meds who are vegans? Give me a break. Call Paula what you want but many of you are not better in some way or another.
the difference is no one has a TV show where they're smoking and drinking while they're texting and driving and popping pain meds while the scourge of America tunes in and hangs on to every word
Four words for you: Krispy Kreme bread pudding.
Just another example of the GROSS immorality teeming through this country. IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY! Why? Because at some point, Americans handed over there destinies to Business. We've all been bought off. Deen KNEW her food is ultimately bad for you, but she sold it anyway, even as her eating habits doomed her to diabetes. (I have it. It's bad. Don't let anyone tel you different. And anyway that says there is a "cure" is full of it. All you can do is control it. Your pancreas doesn't magically heal.). Diabetes is OUT OF CONTROL in this country, thanks largely to an obesity epidemic. Again, why? Because we allow food manufacturers to feed us poison. Why? Because our political reps have been bought off by – you guessed it – Business! We Americans should be ashamed of ourselves. "ANYTHING FOR MONEY" (and a flat-screen in every room, a Lexus in the carport, throwaway cell phones, etc., etc., etc.) is the new American credo.
Dont blame Paula for this. You can eat her food but you need to eat it in MODERATION. If we are going to get high and mighty, then ALL THINGS ARE BAD FOR US. Life is about moderation, not the food. Like I said, you can overeat diet food.
Hey dum dum, the reason she has the 'beatus is because she DOESN'T practice moderation.
At least Paula Deen tells us what she puts in her food. If we saw or knew the break down of what food companies put in theirs some of us "might" turn vegan.
THANK YOU!! What about the bug spray that is used on our vegetables? YOu see where Dr. Oz bust out the Apple juice companies.
That really does not make sense–when Paula cooks "her food" she is using stuff from those same food companies–catch-22.
In the US is more a problem of quanity then quality. Some of our meals are bad but we eat such hugh portions in the US. If most people just cut their intake in half that would some the obesity and diabetes problems.
She should have relaunched her brand as an organic health food brand, one that replicates traditional southeastern cooking in a healthy way. She should have begun this journey three years ago with opness and honesty and she should have invited her fans to go on the journey with her. This is a wasted branding opportunity. This pharma partnership suggests that you can still cook the way she does, pop a pill and live out loud. It's hard to live out loud like she does from a hospital bed because a pill is only half the battle.
Please post the address to that perfect world in your head. I would like to visit.
Really not very nice, Paula. Really, really nasty, as a matter of fact. And don't give me that "I'm your cook, not your doctor" rationalization. If you are not a doctor, then don't make deals with drug companies. This will hurt your bottom line much more than it will help it.
mmmmmmm......I just love lard.
Paula Deen selling Diabetes drugs is akin to the Marlboro Man selling Nicorette.
*Like*
More like the Marlboro man selling chemo for lung cancer. Those diabetes drugs aren't a substitute for the unhealthy food she promotes, they merely control the symptoms...
I've never seen anyone look as fake as she does. She freaks me out.
Try Tammy Faye Bakker.
I am sure that Ms Deen is a nice person, but boy does she have a creepy look about her.
I hope she can get her diet under control.
Oh, now we didn't see this coming a mile away....yeah...all the time peddling her totally unhealthy food and at the same time setting up a partnership with a drug company so she could make even MORE money from having peddled that food to unsuspecting and drooling Americans. No wonder other countries see us as a bunch of fat and ignorant consumers and are laughing their healthy (insert plural other name for donkey here) off at us.
Thanks to Paula Deen's "Southern Food Bible" I'm saving a fortune on shoes. People who think they can still eat Paula's kind of food are being led to ruin by a woman who is only in it for the money. Why'd she wait to share her diagnosis? Til she could make some dang money off it, that's why. "Moderation" when it comes to her foods is probably not more than a tablespoon because both sugar AND butter create insulin response. Shame on you Paula Deen.
OK, I'm not in favor of ridiculing this woman and her health problems but that 1st sentence is KILLER!
For those who wish to take diabetes and other diseases more seriously, read the book "Wheat Belly" by Dr William Davis.
The effects of wheat consumption are very far-reaching and have been for more than 40 years. Wheat has been GMO for more than 40 years with no testing done for short or long-term effects. The Glycemic Index of a slice of whole wheat bread is 71 as opposed to a spoonful of white sugar at 59! Yet the nutritional societies all put wheat and whole grains at the top of their lists for eating healthy!
I'll never forget hearing her say "Butter is our friend". OMG
Well, golllllllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeee! The way she cooks and eats? Diabetes? Okay, now I'm sick from eating bad, so I'll just take some drugs. The American way!!
Ya'll, today we will be injecting fat directly into our veins. Ya'll, this is for the busy family. Ya'll, this cuts out the middleman. Kill me now...
The ONLY person wholly responsible for the food YOU eat is YOU. Paula Dean nor any other other food show host has EVER crammed food down your throat. Its time for Americans to step up and take responsibility for their own decisions/actions. Only children blame others for what they did themselves. Time for many of you to just grow up and stop trying to blame others. I'm NOT dumb enough to cook the way Paula shows on her TV Program. Its entertainment people. Take it with a grain of salt (Pun Intended).
Hey GotThumbs...many of us are smart enough to watch what we eat. Unfortunately, the remainder are not, nor will they ever be. As Belle Curves go, half of those you meet are below average intelligence...and therefore would likely not be smart enough to watch what they eat...or ever be capable enough. Then in waltzes fat slob Paula Dean and her pearly whites peddling something that appeals heavily (no pun intended) to those who just can't control themselves. All the time she knew she had this desease, she's continued peddling her wares, while setting up a pharmacuitical company deal to sell the antidote for her poisons. How she can look anybody in the eye is amazing...I never did, nor ever will consume anything she peddles.
For those below the intelligence bell curve–Darwinism will be the great leveler and Paula and shows like her will just be the facilitators.
I see she is pedaling Dictionaries...You might purchase one.
Grumpster....Americans cannot claim "stupidity" as a reason why they choose to eat the way they do. Paula Deen is a light hearted fun celebrity chef who invokes some curious fat choices into her cooking. At least she inspires people to cook at home rather than consuming large amounts of restaurant food that is over portiioned and largely more fat containing than anything she cooks up at home. Anything in moderation is fine. But to say that we aren't smart enough or educated enough to know better is the most lame excuse I have heard.
Oh Alex Tribeck. You have made a fool of yourself 'correcting' a word that is used and spelled correctly, while you have misused it. Hahahahaha.
I LOVE to watch Paula and Ina and Nigella cook also Mario (I buy the old shows and watch) and the Two Fat Ladies. I agree with you–but take heart–what you see here is jealousy cloaked behind the pretense of self righteousness–currently, America is in an epidemic of the lower classes who, barring storming the barricades and just taking the houses, lifestyles and bank accounts of the rich and famous–find ways to hate them and criticize or berate everything that they do.
We have people in music bands promoting using illegal drugs or getting drunk (that ruins lives and kill people too) but not a PEEP about that stuff. We have CEOs being paid hundreds of millions while destroying 30K a year jobs to send overseas–but who do we hate? The latest, greatest rich and famous. Paula does not owe any of us anything short of a great show–BUT it would be nice, if once in a while, she gave out one of her wonderful recipes and showed us how she came up with a more healthy alternative–and everyone is focused on the butter–as if hydrogenated trans fatty fake butter (magarine) is better–refined or processed carbs are WORSE than the butter would ever be as they initiate the body storing that butter as cholesterol. Paula's OK–but she needs to realize that true healthiness is NOT in any pill from any drug manufacturer–that is a bandaid–true health is a lifestyle and pills should not be part of that–if it can at all be helped.
Hey there high and mighty,
You are aware that no matter how we structure out national healthcare system, whether we fully en-state obamacare (which has not even begun – we still have millions without medical care) or whether we keep a private system (which I prefer), the truth remains media ICONS like Paula Deen in fact influence what people eat the same way FOX or CNN influences how you vote. Yes at the end of the day we make our decisions ourselves but it is entirely infantile to allow people like Paula Deen go unchallenged. it is not just entertainment. It is a LIFESTYLE BRAND worth billions, so obviously millions of people are buying into it and at the end of the day YOU are paying for it.
Gottumbs, you sumed it up. That is the bottom line. NOthing else. And if anyone eats like Paula, do it in moderation. Our bodies need a certain amount of fat and sugar. Again, MODERATION is the KEY.
Another fat slob who can't control herself and now want's to make it seem ok to have Type II Diabetes to justify her behavior. Amazing...losing wieght and maintaining a healthy lifestyle would cure her, but you can't make money from a drug company doing that.
Uneducated response. Do you know what her life is currently like? Learn the facts and then open your mouth.
You are right Zack. This undernourished, poverty-crippled, individual who is filled with self-esteem issues should be pitied. Her son seems to be aware she is cooking her way to an early grave. She promotes unhealthy eating. Maybe she should partner with Jenny Craig.
Diabetes can nor be cured, regardless of what you hear, but it can be controlled.
That is incorrect. She has type 2 diabetes which can can be reversed by a healthy diet. That's why most of the posters on here are correct imo. Instead of owning up to how her cooking/eating directly contributes to type 2 diabetes and becoming the poster woman for healthy change, she retreats behind the drug endorsement. I'm very disappointed in her.
Type II diabetes cannot be cured. Idiot.
Yes it can...bariatrics, did it
She's another fat idi0t that abused food and really needs to see the inside of a gym.
Paula needs to watch the documentary "Forks Over Knives" along with anyone else that has type 2 diabetes. One of the participants in the film gets off Lipitor and cures his own type 2 diabetes simply by following a whole food plant based diet. It is funny how well this works as I tried it myself and have lost 35 pounds with more energy than ever. I get made fun of daily for it as a Kansas boy who has family that runs cattle but the proof is in the pudding (which I can no longer eat).
Diabetes can't be cured but it can be controlled. With proper diet and exercise and under a doctor's care, amazing things can be accomplished. But, as my doctor said, 99% percent of the patients will continue doing what they are doing and need help with medication. Also with diabetes, fat is not the enemy, it's high carb foods. Cut our the carbs and you really don't have to worry about the fats too much. See http://www.diabetes-book.com/
Sorry Brenda but I am going to have to ask if you have reviewed the China Study which is a large pat of the documentary. Have you seen the documentary? If not than you are not a very good blogger. I am aware of the medical industry's position on Type II diabetes. Now I am aware of the silenced medical professionals that have legitimate 20 year studies confirming their position. Did you know that only 5% of doctors are trained in nutrition? You trust these professionals who also happen to be greased by big pharma to give you solid info? Would you distrust something that came from a non-mainstream medical professional? Watch documentary, repost.
I guess that Southern cooking finally got to her.
What a load of garbage. Type 2 diabetes has been proven to be reversible time and again. She needs to stop shoveling down all the fatty food and start eating more nutritious meals. My father is a type 2 diabetic and he manages his blood sugar sans medication. It CAN be done.
Diabetes is not reversible. What it is is manageable. Your Dad is one of the few that is doing what is necessary to control it. Kudos to him! People are mislead to believe that diabetes goes away. It does not. A person, once diagnosed, will always have it. It will either be under control or not.
26% of the people over 50 years old have it. It is called genetic predisposition. Some of us are born with it and no matter how much we weigh we will still have it. It can not be cured, only controlled (hopefully). Not much fun, but it is far better than the amputations, blindness, heart attacks and strokes that occur when it is uncontrolled.
You know, I used to like a lot of what Paula does. Oh, I only cook a few things here and there – special occasions for the most part. Admittedly, her accent and just overexposure in the media made me just get tired of her. I am most disappointed that her announcement coincides with her partnership. Better that she had taken this opportunity to create a new style of cooking, I think. It would have been a wonderful thing – showing middle aged women (like me) how we can change our cooking for the betterment of ourselves and our families. I would have enjoyed that show.
When life hands you diabetes, make fried diabetes balls!
Nope, Diabetes and High Blood Pressure go hand in hand so fried food is not on our diet.
Sounds like the rich getting richer to me. Can't wait to buy her new DIABETIC COOKBOOK.
The title of her next book will be a step by step guide on how to get diabetus.
My observations as a non-American Type 2 Diabetic
a) while genetics is a factor, healthy lifestyle can forestall and even prevent Type 2 diabetes.
b) it is always a stuggle and the hateful stupid blaming comments do not help and are simply cruel.
c)while Ms. Deen's show is disgusting, no-one is forced to watch it.
d) ain't it the American way: you make money off publicizing unhealthy cooking and eating and then you make money off the results. Ms. Deen didn't reveal her Type 2 diabetes until she figures out a way to make money from it.. Disgusting but typically American: everything is for sale including health.
Healthy Lifestyle is irrelevant after a certain age. Things wear out. I eat right, go to the Gym every ^&*( Day, drink nothing but water, and I still have it. Can't be fixed without a new pancreas and different genes.
An over weight person gets diabetes.... Now that's news!
Skinny people get diabetes too; not sure I get your point
.... of course you do, you lying sack. It is that diabetes strikes the self-inflicted obese a thousand times more often than the slim. Nice try, d-wad/
You "don't get the point"? Do you ever get a "point"that is in conflict with your life of ignorant denial?
Try this one: Lung cancer most often strikes, disables, and kills those who smoke. Somewhere there are an unfortunate few who get lung cancer without ever smoking, and fewer still who get it without living or working with smokers. But damn few. Smoking (despite a well-paid lifetime of lying by Walter Merryman and other marketing criminals) causes lung cancer. Eating high fat, high sugar/carbo rich foods as this rotund hooah advocates will give you diabetes and without precise faithful treatment AND RIGOROUS COMPLIANCE kill you. Not every time. But nearly all of the time. Better?
now she and willfred grilmy can do diabetus commercials.
LOL! If she really wants help, she should see Dr. Neal Barnard of PCRM.
Take care of your temple!
He built the foundation of my Temple and it has cracks in it. Ever consider it might be a test :-).
Must be nice to 'unveil a partnership' with a drug to help fight your diabetes that you managed to contract through cooking with lard and bacon-fat.
USA! USA!
It'd be funny if it weren't so perverse.
The ONLY person wholly responsible for the food YOU eat is YOU. Paula Dean nor any other other food show host has EVER crammed food down your throat. Most you need to shut up. Just wish Paula Dean the best and leave at that. Dang we live in a world where people love to bash people all the time. What is it about all of you that people hate? I am sure it is plenty. Also DO NOT BLAME PAULA FOR YOUR EATING HABITS. I love her cooking ( I am from the south and her hometown); however, I eat this kind of food in MODERATION. If you overdue anything, it will not be good for you. Even diet food can be over eatten. To eat 7 grill children breast in one meal is not good. Again, it is MODERATION. NO one blames the stores for selling candy bars and soda, so do not blame a tv cook.
Uhh, actually, not that this will slow you down or stop your pompous pious overgeneralizing and adoring your hometown piggygirl, many people DO blame stores for selling candy and sugary soda to children without warnings or parental consent... and manufacturers for adding empty sugar calories to cereals and making millions off the future pain, suffering, and premature death of our youth. But you're clearly OK with that. As is your right. I suppose you objected to removing cigarette ads from TV and adding warning to packages too? I suppose "no one" wanted those steps to be taken either?
Actually, it isn't the lard and bacon fat–it's the high fructose corn syrup, wheat, gluten, packaged food, highly processed oils and other unnatural foods that cause the problem. And it isn't the quantity, it is about genetics, pre-natal enviornment, industrial food, some prescription drugs that break our metabolism.
I agree with most of what you have written EXCEPT it IS also about the lifestyle–no matter how we copy Japan, the Mediterranean , or Russia's Georgia due to the longevity of the inhabitants we will NEVER reverse the trend in America just based on food–we use too many additives, growth hormones and have a very different micro nutrient climate than any of those countries (no matter how fresh our food is) but we also do something else that is very fake–our exercise.
Exercising to videos or on machines or in a gym does NOT mimic real life work and movement–there are physiological/kinesiological differences that also affect health and how the body interacts–we don't do those things–most of us who diet–use FAKE or manipulated foods (like margarine and nonfat yogurts) and when we exercise we use fake methods like going to the gym instead of outside to walk or run and like lifting weights instead of actual manual labor-we will be the cause of our own future demise–if not through greed then through being so lazy that we actually think our bodies can appreciate or indolent advancements.

Hopefully she will take this as a sign to help Americans cook healthier foods and make better nutritional choices.
paula deen is the anti-christ.
Yes, she is!
I think Ina (from Barefoot Contessa) is next! Her cooking is awful too!
LOL! Seriously!!
Fatas sed grease munching redneck gets diabetes.
In other news, water is wet.
Great. She makes a ton of money off her shows and books, giving everyone diabetes in the process. Now she makes a ton of money off of the drugs to treat the diabetes. That's like the Kardashians working with a company to make and sell brain cell restoration medicine.
Yes, sound about right to me as well.....on every show she is shoveling high fat & cholestrol food into her mouth and her husband Michael's mouth as well. Medications can help, but certainly weight loss, proper diet & exercise will do good as well.
Diet and lack of exercise does contribute to "adult onset" Type 2 diabetes. However, there are plenty of active, skinny and healthy children that have Diabetes. I for one have a nephew who is 9 and was just diagnosed with it and my sister-in-law is a health food fanatic! All three of her boys are healthy and RARELY are allowed to eat anything with sugar, carbs, etc. So, not sure what everyone's point is saying that diabetes is just for fatties who don't exercise. Also, Paula Deen is a "butter" freak not sugar!
Paula "butter freak" Dean promotes totally unhealthy living. She's a fat cow. As for skinny people with diabetes, that's a minority by far. People like PD are all over the place, and she's making the situation worse. She just needs to go away.
She sure know how to make money, she's also selling a line of furniture. At first I liked how she pulled herself and sons out of poverty to become a famous TV personality, now all I see is a money grabbing phony.
"Paula "butter freak" Dean promotes totally unhealthy living"
You cannot blame this on any one person.
People are more unhealthy because their televisions, computers, and game consoles have replaced the former lives.
Go outside and move around or stay unhealthy; your call.
Perhaps you should get your facts straight before you post here. Childhood diabetes in NOT the same as Type 2 diabetes!!
I beg to differ. Types 1 & 2 strike children. I've been Type 2 since birth.
Children get both Type 1 and Type 2.
2 kinds of Diabetes. Type 1 that youngsters get is because their bodies do no make any insulin. They are known to be thinner as the body will convert fat to energy if it does not have enough insulin to take up the blood sugar. Your sister's type is type 2, and caused by the body's resistence to insulin, so it doesn't work as well.
Treatment: control amount of carbohydrates eaten, exercise daily, take meds and/or insulin as directed, know blood sugar by checking it every day. Diabetes is one of the few illnesses that can be completely controlled by paying attention.
Good explanation!
people are uneducated, which is why they are saying that only fat people get diabetes. i, too, was an active 'skinny' kid (at the time, i was taking dance lessons, ice skating lessons, horseback riding lessons and i played youth center softball and tennis) when i was diagnosed with type 1.
many children are also being diagnosed with type 2 now because all they do is sit inside eating chips while playing gears of war because their parents are too afraid to be parents and make them go outside to play.
education is the ONLY way type 2 will be reduced in the general population. see a nutritionist and learn how to eat the correct food and what exactly a serving size is for what you're eating.
"diet" does not just refer to losing weight it refers to what you eat. If people have type II diabetes at some point they ate a lot of carbs to burn out their insulin receptors–if that was not the case -they would have had Type I which indicates the pancreas either cannot produce insulin or cannot produce enough and is usually a juvenile onset disease. If the "boys" are type II diabetic now, then they must eat carbs–because in order for the medicine to work, a certain amount of carbs must be injested and if on insulin a larger amount of carbs is needed daily to keep the insulin from reacting to nothing and possibly killing the patient. If a person without diabetes is given insulin, they can die–if a person with diabetes does not have the right ratio of carbs in their bloodstream for the insulin to react to–they can have a reaction and also can die. One feeds off the other–once you are on the needle, the needs of the insulin KEEP you on the needle and eating the very carbs that made you require the needle. Interesting, huh?
One more thing...when ordinary Americans get it, insurance companies won't even touch you (unless you are covered under a group plan). Some how with celebrieties, even these diseases give an opportunity to make money by pushing some company products! Amazing power of capitalism!
100% inaccurate.
I won't say that "she deserves" it...because I have it myself and know about it. However, I would say this: I am not surprised...if anything I am surprised that she was just diagnosed just now with it. Anyone who watches her cook and brush off any critics about the ingredients she uses it – this was just in the making!
Paula was not diagnosed "Just now" with Type II diabetes, she was diagnosed 3 years ago, she just now came out and admitted it–more than likely she was prediabetic for years and knew that too–but only in todays climate could a person have such a condition and promote a show high in sweets, fat and carbs and be acceptable, prior to now, we would have thought they were both hypocritical and irresponsible–not to mention not credible.
I haven't been this surprised since I found out Liberace was gay!
or Richard Simmons.
Is there such a thing as a 'reputable pharmaceutical company'?
Only to DC lobbiests.
Ts too bad she has influenced young cooks to cook so unhealthy. Now she is going to get rich from the drug companies. She needs to do something to teach people of a healthy life style. Her sons will follow in same footsteps, she should think of that instead of just trying to get rich. That has always been her goal, money, money .
well said.. please see my post below...
No.
One of her sons has a new cooking show. The premise of the show is to take his mom's recipes and to make them healthier. Which is what they should have done in the first place. The comments made by Anthony Bourdain about her has some truths to it.
The world is round.
Good lord! The first thing she does is become a step and fetch it whore for the pharma industry... Drugs do not address the root cause of the problem... only changing your diet does... Get rid of the processed foods and sugar... and by the way, fat doesn't make you fat... sugar and carbs make you fat.. Man made fats like polyunsaturated corn, soybean, etc, and trans fats will kill you... Natural saturated fat from meat is actually good for you! It is what we evolved on! It is not the enemy... Carbs and man made fat are the killers..
Diabetes is a terrible death that can be prevented. The sugar eats your body and veins from the inside out also if its to low its not good either causes brain tissue death if to low for to long, wait till she has a hyperglycemic event or hypoglycemic event will not be fun at all.
Any death before its time is tragic, but we've all got to go somehow. I'm personally hoping to die peacefully in my sleep or with a massive heart attack. The alternatives are far less pleasant.
What has happened to people!!!! To write that someone deserves to have diabetes is beyond cruel. It shows a distinct lack of compassion, is that what our society has become? Very sad! Diabetes is an epidemic in this country, the root cause can be many things, but NOBODY deserves to have it.
I agree, but unfortunately this is what the world is coming to. Sad, isn't it.
Paula should cook better and make a better example. When she gets her first diabetic ulcer she will change her mind or when she gets a kidney removed.....diabetes is not fun.
Paula may be fat and fugly but she dose not crap her food down anyone's throats.
I love ya Paula. Always have and always will. You have such a great personality. I hope that you overcome any problems that ever come your way. Thank you for all of the great recipes, you are totally right-MODERATION is the key. Just know that at least one person is out there cheering for you. Keep on keepin on! You go, girl!
Thank you Lisa, you are the first person that has said what I wanted to say. I love Paula too,and only hope the best for her and her family.
I bought one of her cook books...full of pretty pictures...I could not find one recipe that I could make that was not filled with sugar and fat....so I gave it to Goodwill...
So you are trying to control the population of poor people? Nice...
Good for you. I hope Goodwill burned it. It would be a shame to put it on the shelves again.
Burining books is Nazi thing.
over eat or eat unhealthy foods and don't exercise you'll be sick and die young, it's pretty simple
what is surprising is all the folks on here defending this paula dean lifestyle and being really rude about it
that she tried to hide it and is now working for a drug co pretty much defines her....again real simple
Actually, it is a death sentence. Even though diabetes is manageable, it causes extensive damage to all major organ systems, including the heart. Your risk of heart disease, blindness, gangrene, neuropathy, amputation due to poor circulation and a host of other ailments skyrocket and take years off life expectancy.
It's NOT a death sentence. It's all in how you deal with it. I have a friend who was diagnosed with diabetics in 2010. She changed the way she eats. Today she is diabetics free! Not 99% free but 100% free. I CAN be a death sentence if you choose to do nothing about it. But it DOES NOT have to be.
Diabetics is not Paula Deen's fault. It's up to each human to moderate what they eat, how often they eat it and how much. In today's world we want to blame everyone but the one person who can control a person. Themselves!
"Diabetics is not Paula Deen's fault"
In her case it is.
well, if diabetes is a death sentence, does that mean i should be dead by now? or how about my friends who have had it for 25, 30 years. what about the people who have had it since the mid 1900s, when insulin was JUST invented? what about the people who endured boiling glass syringes and peeing on ketone sticks? if i were you, i'd get my butt to the library and do some research before spreading that crap about it being a 'death sentence'.....unless you're still stuck in the 1930s.
Show many any person who has lived longer than 40 years with Type I diabetes (or type II for that matter) and I'll show you an exception AND a person that probably did not get the disease when they said they did and/or are lying about their age. Everyone in the healthcare and Pharmaceutical industry know that properly managed, people can live 30-40 years but a toll is inexorably being taken on their organs and that sooner or later they cannot stand the strand. There are always exceptions BUT The majority of people with Type I and type II diabetes never live to see 60 unless they have type II and did not contract it until they were late middle age–even then they seldom live over 25 years with the disease–this is a fact–look it up.
Untreated and unmanaged, sure. My Aunt was Type 2, on Insulin for 30 years, and died from heart failure at 85. She was also obese her whole life. I'm not. I'm Type 2, pills, not Insulin though the Dr. says Insulin is in my future (regardless of lifestyle), and if you ignore my pancreas I'm in pretty good shape and eat "right". Everybody has to die somehow. I'd really prefer this way rather than Alzheimers.
This is true–it IS a death sentence BUT given how long it takes to die from it (if managed correctly–people are more apt to die of cancer or heart attacks than they are from the disease–IF they manage it correctly. Most people in health care acknowledge that if poorly managed, it can be a quicker death from a few years to 30 or 40 with medical intervention. But there is NO CURE and the organs ARE deteriorating, NO honest health professional will deny that truth.
Y'know what? Lay off! Adult on-set diabetes is common, and she's w/in the specified age range.
At least she's not an emaciated lollipop-head like some of those would-be foodies. Why else do you think they call Giada "Little Big Head"? What most people don't know is that eating disorders are more prevalent now than they ever were in the '90s; they're just too malnourished to recognize it.
I for one would love to stuff something in Jennifer Hudson's gob everytime she comes on the tele.
keep lying to yourself and you'll end up with her
seems like YOUR the one being rude.....
It's only common because obesity is now an epidemic. This woman is clearly overweight and does not exercise enough to maintain a healthy weight. Do NOT make excuses!!! She is a celebrity chef who touts recipes that are fattening and laden with sugar. She has a responsiblity to own up to that.
"I for one would love to stuff something in Jennifer Hudson's gob everytime she comes on the tele"
So would I, but it ain't food.
I'm certain you're male, and you're a pig! Your comment should be deleted. (I'm betting you are obese, too)
hannah – I've got some man sausage for you too.
How does Jennifer Hudson become part of your rant? Oh, wait ...
That woman has a mouthful of fake chicklets. I think she should be a spokesman for efferdent. Lol.
You must be a very miserable person to bash people for everything. Now, you are bashing Paula's teeth. Why not post a picture of yourself so we can all make fun of you. I am sure you are as ugly on the outside as you are on the inside. Your heart must be FULL of hate. How sad for you. I pitty you, your friends (if you have any) and your family. Why not get a job and get off the posting?
cheers to you Sam!
How about instead of making money off of her diabetes by partnering with a Drug Company – why doesn't she go on TV and tell her fans "STOP EATING THE STUFF I'VE MADE MONEY OFF OF".
Being fat is one of the main driving factors on getting Type 2 Diabetes and the high calorie, high carb foods that she has pushed and made her living off of is the problem.
She made money off of pushing a eating style that helps people get Type 2 Diabetes – and now she wants to make money off of a drug to treat Type 2 diabetes.
Pretty disgusting in my book.
I mean she didn't help anyone do anything. People make their own choices in the end, if they feel as if the recipe is unhealthy then don't make it, that's almost as absurd as "McDonalds made me fat." I mean people are looking at this in all the wrong ways.
scientific research says the opposite..... yes we are all responsible for our choices but it takes a lot of willpower and a break from societal norms to not be effected by all the advertisements etc and there is a massive peer effect, we tend to do what every one is doing, no it's not ALL mcdonalds or paula deans fault, yes it is partially the fault of these co's and people like dean out there pushing this stuff, why do we try to get drug dealers off the streets if it's just a matter of choosing not to do drugs?????
I totally agree with you. When I heard the "news" I thought Real big surprise. Her cooking and overindulgence have led to this life-threatening problem but she's also made millions selling it to other (as you said) now she plans to cash on it her fatness and fame-the whole thing is disgusting and she should be ashamed of herself.
Really? She made money off of encouraging people to eat too much pre-processed foods? Or at too many fast food chains? Or drinking too much soda and other fructose loaded drinks? Sure her show doesn't promote the healthiest food choices, but I'm betting most of our obesity epidemic is not from her kinds of cooking. It's from the LACK of home cooking and relying on microwaves and restaurants instead.
It all depends on how long you want to live..if you dont care, please pass the gravy boat.
I looooove gravy, I have it 2-3 times a year, my body can handle that, moderation and control people
I am sorry that anyone has any disease, but Diabetes for fat Paula Deen is no big surprise. I can't watch her because her twang is practically a foreign lanquage, but my daughter bought me a set of her chef knives for Xmas. BIG MISTAKE! Don't ever buy them, they are the dullest knives in existence.
I believe it. All she needs knives for is cutting through butter and lard.
*snicker* who didn't see this coming.
Peoples gotta stop blaming genetic as a problem. Bottom line here she knew it was from her cooking and continue to cook the way she did and not tell anyone so she could still make money by make people unhealthy. Finally once she sealed a deal with the drug company she then tells everyone so the people who got Type 2 from cooking her recipes can now trust her again and buy the drug.
Diabetes is a genetic disease and it doesn't always come from butter and sugar. My mom was 90 pounds dripping wet, and a vegetarian. When she died her sugars were 600! My sister – same thing. Healthy diet, healthy weight – soaring blood sugars. Now I have it. No, we didn't grow up on a diet of Paul Deen's recipes (though I do enjoy watching her show). I wish people would educate themselves before throwing out such stupid statements.
diabetes is not always genetic. I've had type 1 for 16 years (diagnosed 2 weeks before my 13th birthday), and i am the first person in my ENTIRE family history to get type 1. for me, diabetes is an auto-immune disorder. type 2, also, is not ALWAYS genetic. while my paternal grandmother may have had it (she was never truely diagnosed) and my father is now a type 2 as well, a good reason why he was diagnosed as a type 2 was that after he had a heart attack about 13 years ago he did nothing but sit in his easy chair and eat. he gained a lot of weight. his cholesterol went up, as did his blood sugars.
Yes it's a genetic disease. Just because its an opinion of yours, doesn't make it true. Especially type 2. Type 2 is more genetically linked than type 1 or juvenile diabetes. Lifestyle choices can delay the onset and the severity of the diabetes, but it doesn't necessarily prevent it.
Well of course she has diabetes, just look at her!
I dare you to find an ounce of fat on Halle Berry, yet she and a dozen others (like Sharon Stone) are Type 2 Diabetics. We live with it and have productive lives. Why can't you accept that and move on?
I always thought if she got Diabetes she'd commit suicide. Glad she's accepted it and is going to take the medicine instead of changing her diet, NOT.
If only I could control my Diabetes with diet and excercise alone. Some people just don't know how lucky they are.
She absolutely gets in my last nerve... I agree so much with you... Anthony Bordain should get in her a** again ...
im with you there 100%. my dad has the balls to complain about having type 2 and watching what he eats and taking a pill when he 'feels like crap'. my mom tell him "look at your daughter who will be injecting herself with needles for the rest of her life" when he starts bitching. i'd SO rather have type 2 than type 1.
I've often wondered....how the hell does Adam Richman of 'Man vs. Food' do it? Some of his meals are at least 10 thousand calories....5 time the recommended daily intake of calories. What the? I see food totally as pure nourishment....not something you compete over! Stupid show......but then I catch myself watching it!
I have a friend who has done filming for the show when Man vs Food came around the area. Apparently he pukes up his meals after every show o_O
she could send a check to 700 club, and he will pray for her to cure diabetes
Haha right? We all know how well THAT works.
She has diabetes, she's not gay!
She looks like the human version of Miss Piggy.
LOL!!
You're a class act. Will you be with us all day?
Does she have a thing for Frogs too :-)?
Does this come as a surprise to ANYONE!!??!!??
a little, i was sure she'd get heart disease first.
Yes, I expected heart disease.
Ok, true. Diabetes would not have been my first choice either.
my money was on heart attack first.
In related News, Scientists at Los Alamos announced today that, standing in the fallout may be hazardous to your health.
Deep fried butter bad for you, you say. Who would've thought!
Headline – Paula Deen has diabetes. Why is this news? It was only a matter of time. Disgusting, isn't it, that Novo Nordisk thinks hiring her – a woman who has made a name for herself promoting unhealthy eating – is a good spokesperson for their products. Maybe they can have her do a commercial featuring these tasty dishes she has foisted on the public: Deep Fried Lasagna, The Krispy Kreme Burger, Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding, Deep Fried Stuffing on a Stick.
its not her cooking that bugs the heck out of me, its her over exaggerated southern accent y'aaalll
Excuse me while I laugh. Serves you right Paula, serving up that slop and trying to pass it off as southern home cooking.
Reading through the responses, I hope the drug company gets the message...............this is not a good spokesperson. I could not even imagine eating the garbage she prepares. How the heck did she get a show in the first place??
Girl! I knew all that good eatin' would catch up some day. I'll be keeping an eye out for your new low carb cookbook
Put your eye back and don't hold your breath. Her son is healthi-fying her recipes for her.
Damn it! LOL
I'll tell you why she took so long to come forward with her diagnosis. A couple years ago my girlfriend worked in marketing for an artificial sweetener company. Paula Deen's manager had contacted her and told her Paula Deen had diabetes and she would be their spokesperson and promote their product to the diabetic community, for a ridiculous sum of money of course. The only reason she waited to give this information to the world is she had to see how much she could profit off of it. Greed at its finest, profiting off of the results of the lifestyle she actively promotes.
So she's a criminal because she didn't inform you of her personal medical conditions? Get over yourself. The truth is, if she never told a single soul its her right to do so.
I don't care who she tells, if she chooses to tell anyone, my only point is that she couldn't wait to tell the world about her health condition as soon as she found out how much money she could make off of it.
I agree with Tony. I think the rest of you are a bunch of jealous people. Paula is as genuine as they come. i've met her and she is a wonderful person. She doesn't tell you to eat that way every day. Apparently you've never watched enough to know what she promotes. Her health is her business and no one elses.
It has been rumored for the last couple of years she was hiding her diabetes. She had to tell people, people had to know in order for it to even be a rumor.
I agree completely. Aligning herself with a drug company to make money off her diabetes is so wrong. I would have more respect for her if she just went away and got herself healthy – educate herself and her family about how to eat. She could come back in a couple years with a new show on how to make versions of her favourite salty, fatty, creamy foods, in a lighter healthier way. Instead, she took the money / marketing 'out' with big drug company – Boo!
She is such a hypocrite... I just hate the greed and the way she wants to profit for anything.. and they she has the audacity of saying her way of cooking is gear towards the strugguling ppl on this economy... say what??? You are such a diservice to the ppl how watch your program... You made your bed, now laid on it.. everything is excesive with you... such a terrible thing to profit from... and I hope the pharma company gets to understand that you are the WORST example from us diabetic out there that eat healthy, excercise and struggle day by day with diabetes... I do not look up to you at all because you Paula represent what a diabetic SHOULD NOT do...
How in the world can her cooking be geared towards people in this struggling economy when her food is so unhealthy that people end up with all kinds of illnesses and run up all kinds of doctor bills for the meds they have to take because they eat her food?
When I watch a cooking show on TV, just a look at the chef turns me on or off from the show. Paula, along with a few other chefs, turn me off because they're so overweight. I know it's not fair, but I really don't want to cook foods that might make me end up looking like them!
You're right, it is not fair, but that's how it is. Your looks are judged:
I went to Bare Escentuals to stock up and a man working there was nice and helpful. I have good skin but was looking for a cream not tested on animals and BE does not. The man that waited on me had skin like shoe leather (tanorexic) and it looked kind of greasy. I did not buy any cream from him.
You are What You Eat and Fat is NOT Beautiful!
Sorry...but if you didn't know the dangers of her food after watching 3 minutes of ANY episode...then you deserve whatever you get.
I bet you are the type that thought duing McDonalds for making people fat made sense.
Ridiculous.
How about common sense and personal accountability? It won't hurt..I promise.
Personal accountability is un-American!
May I have another piece of pie please? And...is that ice cream over there? Oh, maybe I should lick my fingers first.
I agree with Personal Responsibility – but Personal Responsibility also goes for people like Paula Deen – she has a personal responsibility to be honest with her fan base and the realities of what she is pushing – as well as the people who freely eat the type of crap that she pushes.
Fat is NOT Beautiful!
This Woman is a Disgusting Cock Roach!
Those who Follow her Recipes and Eat the Poison Will Reap what They Sow and that is Poor Health, Disease and Sickness. Just Like Smokers and Drug Users!
I knew it!
FOOD NETWORK SHOULD take Paula Deen out of the network for promoting unhealthy food in her recipes. Now she is endorsing her poor little boy Bobby. They are very greedy people. They only care about their fame and fortune. It is shocking the amounts of butter, cream cheese, sugar and all bad things in these recipes. Next thing she may be hosting the biggest Loser!
Start a petition to have her removed from the network
THIS IS A PETITION FOR THE FOOD NETWORK STAFF. PLEASE TAKE PAULA OUT OF YOUR NETWORK.
Well bless her heart.
1) Glad she waited 3 years to let everyone know that her cooking has lead to her having Diabetes.
2) So she cooks unhealthy food, assists in millions of Americans getting fat and unhealthy, gets Diabetes herself and turns it into what I am assuming will be a very well paid gig working with a pharma company (and probably getting her drugs for free as well).
3) Now she all of a sudden has "Diabetes friendly" recipes?
This is ridiculous.
Oh and I am sure that once you register with her site that you will be spammed by NovoNordisk as well.
And it still sounds like she's trying to eat outrageous diabetes-inducing concoctions. Good health is its own reward Paula. I'll stick to my 'boring diet and life'. Thanks anyway.
Yes. Trust me.
Try it and report back.
After several repeated iterations, I have to conclude that I cannot become diabetic in this manner.
Now who wants toast? I have butter all ready!
To me it's sad that she "outs" herself with a serious health issue then tries to capitalize on it with million dollar deals for a drug company and a food company. I think it ruins her credibility so I'll just choose to ignore all her commercials and programs. That's why I have a mute button on my remote. Do all her recipes have biscuits and gravy in them?
I totally agree with you. She should concentrate on changing her diet and educate adults / kids about what she learned – she should revamp her show and make all her favourite, gooey, fatty foods, in a lighter way rather then aligning with a major drug company!
I totally agree with you. I have been a type 2 diabetic for 6 years. I am not on ANY drug. It takes hard work, but you can control diabetes with changing your eating habits and exercise. It's sad that Paula decided to take the "low road" and hook up with this drug company. She could have helped a lot of people , but, instead, greed got the better of her!!
I am diabetics type 2 for more than 30 years. I exercise, eat right and I am in total control of my diabetes. My A!C for past several years is under 6. All those people who try to make money by selling drugs for cure of this decise are scum bags. I think we should make it a mandatory, that at the end of the show, all cooking host should tell to its viewer the total calories and the fat content of the suggested serving. I have seen on TV too many fat chefs treated like a big hot shot.
Personally I can't stand to watch her show since every other word out of her mouth is y'all but I guess she cooks in the style of the south which includes deep frying and pork fat. I'd say if you don't like this don't eat any of this stuff. Most likely nobody is forcing anyone to eat anything they don't want to eat. If she has a medical condition that's her business.
I've seen a few of her shows where she cooks with her son and she is constantly referring to him as "Son". Besides the "y'all" that bugs me too.
I don't have any grudge against Paula Deen, but I find it odd that she seems to be using this as just one more product sponsorship opportunity. And I dispute her claim that her diet has nothing to do with it. I have a sister-in-law with Type I diabetes and I had gestational diabetes while pregnant, and in both cases diet had to be managed carefully. That includes not eating the concoction Paula referred to as "Krispy Kreme bread pudding."
Paula Deen's : How to kill your husband by cooking.
In this day and age, people are aware that high-fat/high-carb/high-sugar diets are unhealthy and can lead to all sorts of medical problems. Any adult who chooses to cook/eat those type meals on a regular basis knows the risks. Deen grates on my nerves, so I don't often watch her. But I can't blame her for anyone else's medical problems. Deen isn't the problem (well, except for her own condition) – the problem is the decline in physical activity the past few decades and bad food choices/portion sizes, even though we know better. It's the instant gratification/"I deserve it" mentality that pervades our society.
If there never were a Paula Deen, I imagine we'd still be in the same sorry state of health in this country due to our own poor choices. I do have a problem with her teaming up with the pharm company, though. It'd be nice to see her team up with a non-profit for diabetes education instead.
It's staggering the stupidity of the comments here. This is the way they eat in France, only they understand the word "Moderation" which we cannot grasp here. Everything in the U.S has to be over done, then we blame everyone but ourselves. God forbid we take responsibility. And to rank on her dialect. Very mature.
If she dropped 50 pounds she wouldn't have diabetes. Ms. Dean has type 2, totally avoidable.
Some people can manage Type 2 with diet and exercise to the point they don't need medication, but that's not so for everyone, no matter how hard they try. I have Type 1 but know many with Type 2 who have lost weight, eat healthfully and still require at least oral meds and sometimes even insulin. I think it depends on how soon it's caught and how much damage it's already done by the time someone is diagnosed. But to your point, eating right and exercising definitely help improve diabetes, even if medicine is still necessary.
Paula is in denial. It's the butter, stupid!!
Next week:
As you sew. so shall you reap a myriad of horrible illnesses
Or
You 'butter' listen to your doctor
Do you mean 'sow' .... like to plant something?
No. S/He meant "sow" like an adult female pig.
I wish her all the best with the diabetes. I hope she does not tone down her mouth-watering recipes. All the people here are sour because Paula is a successful. Obesity and related diseases are because of the choice of oneself. You can't blame poor Paula for that!
I never watched her show, but her actions are terrible. She only came out when she became a spokesperson for a drug. $$$ Talk about greed, lack of morals and no conscience for the welfare of other people. She's already made a fortune and will live well for the rest of her life. Why didn't she say something three years ago and use her fame to help others? Even making healthier changes to her recipes would have made a difference to her viewers.
It's all about the money. She found a way to make money off of her illness and didn't tell anyone so that they would continue to eat her disguising food recipe's and hopefully get diabetes themselves, then she could recommend the drug. It's disguising and horrible and I hope people see her for what she really is, a disguising pig!
Dont understand why you and all others expect her to be so upstanding!
Lila, totally agree. .Love your name, BTW.. don't hear of too many Lilas these days.. it's my daughter's name too
There is also a 'leila' on Futurama......one eye and two big boobs!
"...Type 2 is often called adult-onset diabetes because it develops over time due to low activity levels and a poor diet that causes excess body weight."
Yet another fat, irresponsible American is diagnosed with type-2 diabetes. Surprising after years of consuming huge amounts of sugar, salt and fat on a daily basis in order to satisfy the need (and right!) to pig out - AND encouraging others to do so as well. I am heartened though that Ms. Deen has found a way to profit from it...even more of the American Way at work! Will she be using medicare/medicaid to pay for the necessary medications too? I hope so, because as a healthy, fit taxpayer who watches what he eats and engages in activities aside from chewing, I consider it my patriotic duty to support the irresponsible.
What's sickening is that it sounds like she kept quiet about it until she secured a deal with a drug company to push the drug. This woman is marketing diabetes!
lol. Diabeetus.
"Diabetes, how bad is that!" – Ina Garden
Way to keep America fat with your lies and suthern chahm, a-hole. May all your toes fall off.
Think she will marinate her foot in butter after it falls off?
LULZ
Nothing wrong with her food. I eat it all the time but stay slim regardless...because I exercise.
That's what happens when you eat a deep fried stick of butter with every meal y'all!
You shall reap what you sow.
When you consume and push horrible, disgusting food on the public, you are going to end of with health problems. She has made millions of dollars while destroying the lives of millions of poor Americans.
She is a horrible person and deserves every bad thing that happens to her.
So, you've eaten her food then?? You must have if you know it's "horrible". And really, destroyed millions of American lives?? Wow, just wow. You must be a blast at parties.
You Don't Have to Have Eaten her Food to Know that It is Not Conducive to Good Health!
Alex!
It's the idiot that eats Mcdonalds........hence it's his/her fault, NOT Mcdonalds!
By that standard, so does anyone connected to Planned Parenthood.
Keep your religion out of it. No place for it in this discussion and you know it.
So you're the guy who has stepped up to the plate to take care of all those unwanted, unloved children who have been brought into the world by the irresponsible.
You're right. As I recall she's the only one on the Food Network and our state and local police pay us a visit when we don't follow Paula's recipes. Good call Jeff. Colonel Sanders use to do the same thing.
Your comment is totally unfair to Paula. Sure her show is food "porn" but, she is giving people what they want. And like the article states by Paula, that moderation is the key. Many of the problems with American's diet is less about what they eat, and more about lifestyle. People need to exercise more and stop blaming McDonalds or Paula's recipe for their fat behinds.
I don't think the point and outrage is just from what she cooks–it is her affiliation with a diabetes drug mfg co indicates she has her hands in BOTH pockets on BOTH sides of an issue. She is promoting a condition through her products and cooking and PROFITS–now she will be a spokesperson for treatment of that same condition and PROFITS–what is to stop her from pushing the one to profit from the other? CONFLICT OF INTEREST.
Seems to me Julia Child and Paula Deen were "sow"ing the same sort of stuff - and Julia lived way over 90 with no diabetes. I'm not really comparing Deen's cooking to the Divine Mrs. Child, but the ingredients they both very liberal indeed with the same maligned ingredients. The difference between them and you, perhaps, is that they had a lot more fun.
Don't recall Julia sliding a burger b/w a couple KKs...just sayin
i DON'T RECALL JULIA signing up with a Pharmaceutical company to address the diseases her cooking style caused.
Somehow, I don't think you KNOW Paula and how can you say she is horrible when you have NEVER met her? No one deserves to have anything happen to them. Her life style has lead to this but no one deserves a disease. Remember, you could some day have cancer and people could say you are a horrible person and deserve it. I don't think you OR your family would like that! You are just a mean person.
not surprising as the way she cooks with tons of butter and fat and sugar, etc, doesn't exactly bode to eating healthy nor being healthy. her cooking is like a heart attack/diabetes/health problems just waiting to happen.
Isn't she the same wmen that placed a beef patty between two glazed donuts...I don't feel sorry for you...
This can't be surprising to anyone! What's weird is that she's using her treatable illness to push drugs. How about change your recipes around Paula?!
Well no sh*t.
Moral of the story: obese, disgusting women who cook fatty, sugary foods will die of obesity related illnesses. And this is news? Oh yeah...it is for the idiots down south who actually follow this Paula (Fatty-Fatty) Dean.
Fatty-Fatty?? What are you? Twelve?
Shocker.
Looks like she's wearing some "after-market" choppers. Her original teeth may have been the first casualty of her cooking.
That looks like about a $30K set she has. Doesn't she do a gravy flavored denture cream ad?
Yes, diet contributes to type 2 diabetes. In fact, it's the biggest contributor. However, proper diet can actually reverse diabetes as well. Only people who are too lazy to properly address their diet need to be dependent on drugs for type 2 diabetes. Way to go Paula...make money off your diabetes flogging drugs instead of using your celebrity to teach people to eat properly. The food you promote causes disease and yet you keep flogging that too.
No, Raevyn, she said she eats what she cooks in moderation. She doesn't eat that way all the time. Her show is a COOKING SHOW, not a medical show. Why the hating?
Agreed Raevyn. Well said.
Jennifer- She says she eats that junk in moderation. She's never once said the word moderation on her show. Not once. Why? Because her fans won't be pleased when she says "You just can't eat this poison every day, y'all!"
poison = sausage gravy ???
Yeah, Tom, it is. Sorry, you may want to quit your sausage gravy diet. Were you under the impresson that it was good for you?
There's no doubt that Paula's recipes are delicious, but too much of that type of cooking is driving in the fast lane to diabetes, especially if you aren't a healthy weight to begin with and you don't exercise. Now I'm not going to stop making the occasional Paula Deen recipe just because it's loaded with butter and sugar, but what I will do is watch my portion size and spend an extra 10 minutes on the elliptical trainer. If you want to have a special treat, it's what you've got to do. Watch your calorie intake and get enough exercise.
I'd like to see Paula perhaps come up with a cook book full of healthy, diabetic-friendly recipes.
her son now has a cooking show for that
Got to say though, I would rather be her cardiologist than her gynocologist.
Just sayin.
So she kept quiet about her diabetes until it became profitable to go public. How could she possibly be a credible spokesperson for a pharmaceutical? Epic fail.
Perhaps she is now willing to work on her health and you will see some positive changes in her show recipes and in her life. Just because she has a television show doesn't mean she has to open up her life to you. And, if she's found a drug that is helping her extend her life and health, perhaps she'd like to help other people too. Why are you such a mean person? No drugs for that...Too bad.
It's better to eat healthy and prevent diabetes in the first place. Paula Deen is the mean one for leading people down the road to ill health. Too bad there's not a pill for being dumb, Jennifer.
She is a fine Christian and a wonderful cook. I have all her cookbooks.
At some point, I knew that the "C" word would end up in this thread.
Jesus gave her diabetes.
Hey Paula, learn to cook heallthy because you can't sugar-coat everything. Frankly if you took away your accent don't know what the interest would be with you, You have made money off pretending to help people, but your cook is a disgrace, too fatty, too sugary, too much of bad things...and now you come out and say it's all about moderation, and now you have a tie-in with a drug company telling people again what to take. Give it a rest, America needs to learn how to eat and they won't find out from you anymore.......
This lady's accent is irritating, beyoind belief. I avoid anything invovling her because the sound of her voice makes me want to kick her in the dentures!
GO VEG! lols. well, now she has no choice but than to eat healthy. Pity though.
The way Ms. Deen cooks greens - last time I read one of her recipes for such - involves substantial amounts of meat and fat in the pot with the greens. Her salads always seem to have major-league quantities of cheese and/or globs of mayo-based dressing on top. That's not going to bring her or her fans closer to health, not by a long shot. I'm not quite clear that Ms. Deen understands the term "vegetarian" at all. And I'm pretty certain that she considers veganism to be a form of torture.
Time to add ma fav'rit ingredient! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zv8yEMRDe_w
Why in God's name would you ever want to sleep with your spouse?
Oops, wrong article.
Because it beats heck out of sleeping with yours.
LOOOLZ!.. about time people realize that southern deep fried cooking is not...HEALTHY EATING....
Southern food is great. Just don't eat too much.
LOOOOLZ!.. ohnoes... @paulaD. you are what you eat...
Paula has not once mentioned good/balanced diet and exercise. Instead, she mentions pharma. I do believe in insulin for those who absolutely need it. But, in this respect, I am totally disappointed that Paula is showing her business acumen than plain nice compassion to those who already have it and offering advice. Two thumbs down with Paula's cooking!!!
Let this be a lesson to her audience – cause and effect – you eat like that, you are going to die!!!
Heh, we're all gonna die eventually anyway, might as well enjoy life while we're around!
EXACTLY!! Drive faster than the speed limit on a regular basis? Then don't comment on unsafe lifestyles.
I wouldn't trust anyone that is making money off of me being sick. just saying.
And where did your study for your medical degree??
Definition
By Mayo Clinic staff
The term "diabetes mellitus" refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood glucose, commonly called blood sugar.
I learned what i know by my own self. with no help from the mayo clinic. except that they were able to diagnose a corn allergy. mostly they stood in the way of me being well. but you can go there if you want. its a free country.
Don't be shocked if they put you on a diet that is known to fail. well documented to fail. and send you down a path that doesn't work. like thousands before you.
Mayo is good at some things, but not everything. Keep your expectations low and maybe it will work out for you. It didn't work out for me. There's no doubt that they have good people there trying hard, but I needed real answers and it was a lot of work. I had higher expectations from their diagnostic skills, but I think they were trying new products at the time that i was there...and I wasn't impressed. I also got diflucan there that didn't seem to be effective at all. I went to a different hospital and got a different prescription and went to a local pharmacy and got the same drug from a different country. That one worked. So...i'm wondering about the efficacy of drugs from other countries now. Something not right there. My case might be a fluke. I'm sure some people do well there. I didn't.
A condition can be a disease in its own right and still be a symptom of a syndrome which normally can include a cluster of diseases that taken individually are maladies but taken together give a more comprehensive picture. Medicine is NEVER either absolute or definitive. DM as a stand alone disease is an outmoded notion–even the AMA acknowledges a large syndrome in Hyperinsulinemia with one of it symptoms being obesity and also another being diabetes Type II.
make sure you don't have infections (yeast, strep, etc. that don't throw a temp of 102 so they miss them) or allergies (corn being most likely) that act like infections.
infections, or allergies acting like infections, will keep your blood sugar too high. anything that you eat will be too much if you have an infection, and no exercise won't help. it will for a very short period of time, but that's not the problem. when your body has an infection, it keeps your blood sugar too high, and your body will send insulin to deal with it (because it will protect your brain, but it uses expensive methods to do that...raises your cholesterol levels). read chapter two in jonny bowden's book, Living the Low Carb Life. that's the best explaination of how carbs raise cholesterol levels. but rare that you see people make the connection between yeast infections (probably from antibiotics that are mold based) and diabetes, but i'm pretty convinced there's something there. i can't say that i have a great solution. diflucan works in the short term, but i kept getting it back. fungus is hard to get rid of. and i don't think it vaginal like they say, it appears to be systemic. You still have to eat real food (stay away from corn and that's hard. they put corn in everything...there are three pages of names that are other words for corn). and exercise. but it will actually work if you can get rid of the infections. if you have an infection, it will keep your blood sugar too high, your body will send insulin to deal with it, and insulin loves to store fat and hates to let go of fat (per barry sears books). so, its very difficult to lose weight with an infection.
inflammation is an issue. i'm not sure if that's from allergies? or infections? or both. either or both? not sure, but i would try to get those out of there. then it seems like you have half a chance...at least for a while...that diet and exercise will work. until you get it back. for me, it came back when i ate grain (corn products...so the allergy thing is suspicious – maybe we can't handle genetically modified corn?).
seems like we should look into all of the oxalic acid, estrogens, xenoestrogens, etc. that we get in our diet also.
I love her show. I hope she can control this easily. I think she's HOT.
Have you been drinking?
No. I think she's really hot. I luv curves and gray on a young woman.
It's all Obama's fault's !!! (Sorry for the sarcasm, but I couldn't help but throw this in just because I've heard everything being blamed on Obama lately!)
But seriously, I wonder why she waited THREE YEARS to admit she had diabetes? And her cooking shows were still running during that time and still instructing people to cook the highly unhealthy dishes that she's been cooking? I call that deceit and bad faith.
"Don't worry y'all! You can still make and eat my unhealthy dishes, just take this little pill afterward and wash it down with melted butter!"
Disgusting people, just disgusting. You don't need to live like this. Eat better food, eat LESS food, and get moving!
I don't need to take responsibility for my actions! I blindly do as I'm told.
I find it disgusting that you live a life of so little joy and pleasure. That's a choice you've made, but your blind condescension is objectionable and prudish.
It is not about being judgemental or prudish. Food is for nourishment and nutrition, NOT for pleasure! Life should be giving you pleasure, not an all-you-can-eat buffet.
Your post is objectionable and prudish. Did you use the Thesaurus before posting?
duh......it's all choices
hopefully she will change hers
negativity, intolerance and just plain old mean...gee, no wonder the rest of the world laughs at us...wait, they're mean too if they are laughing at someone's size. Whatever happened to letting people live their lives without all the judgemental nonsense? Why is it so acceptable to be cruel?
People choose their own way in life, knowing that choices bring cruel remarks from others. Get over it.
....so then if I say you're a mean, heartless person of no compassion who's got quite a lot of bad karma to make up for, you're cool with that, right?
Here's a link for all you naysayers:
"The biggest contributing factor is genetics (paraphrasing)". Get educated people.
http://todayhealth.today.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/01/16/10170320-did-paula-deens-diet-cause-her-diabetes
Type II diabetes is caused by getting fat. Yes, some people can stay fat longer but guess what...if they stay fat, they will get it. If they lose below 20 percent of their set point body weight, unless they are very, very old, I will guarantee you the diabetes will go away. Google Roy Walford or heck just look at the biggest loser. Eat what you want just stay below 2000 calories a day for a 6 foot medium build man and 1600 calories a day for a 5' 6" woman. You'll be healthier than you ever were. Get plenty of rest, reduce stress and exercise moderately by walking a lot and let us all know the results in a year. I know I've seen the raw animal data.
1) Genetics is part of it – it can make a person more likely to get Type 2 Diabetes.
2) However, you can't be obese, eat crap, get Type 2 Diabetes and say "Well its genetic" – thats as much BS as when people claim that they are fat because of genetics.
First – if you eat well and are not fat your likelihood of getting Type 2 Diabetes is greatly diminished regardless of genetics.
Just like being obese is not possible if you eat properly, at the end of the day I've never seen an obese person coming out of a concentration camp...
I agree with what you are saying. There's is too much crude and mean language online. But I am disappointed that she seems to diminish the impact her food has had. Maybe she thinks it'll ruin her image/brand. But I think she could be quite successful if she just entered into a healthy brand/image due to her Type II.
Amen! This prissy, Victorian attitude towards good food is just as objectionable as calling people "geeks" or "nerds" for being clever or "longhairs" for listening to classical music or any of the many names people came up with for listening to rap or rock n roll in the fifties. It's like putting scarlet letters on people's shirts. It makes me feel like sticking my tongue out at all the dried-up Miss Grundys out there. The English say that for Americans, the biggest sin is to die.
Seems like this should have been included as a disclaimer for all her recipes and shows...cook and eat like this and you'll be sorry too!
Great idea!
Nonsense. Do you really believe people don't realize what kind of food they are getting when Ms. Deen drops a bar of butter into the pot? Save your indignation for moral misbehavior and keep that rissy little moue to yourself.
Seems that selling products is more important to Paula than helping people, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and healthy eating. Such a shame.... she's just another capitalist sellout.
I could have told you that yesterday, before I knew she was diabetic. This only confirms what we already knew.
If you could have told us yesterday, why didnt you?
Surely all of those poor Savannah orphans she claims to spend all her time helping will greatly benefit from her newest sponsorship deal?
Whilst I feel it's a personal shame for her to have gotten Diabetes, I think the decision to profit from it is in poor tatse *jealous I didn't think to get famous and do it first*
It's a well-known fact that people who say "ya'll" ten times a minute are likely to develop diabetes.
And are there any well-known facts about people who spell it wrong? It's "y'all," not "ya'll." The apostrophe replaces the o and the u.
Thanks for the nice FYI.....but......I mean really, who gives a fiddler's #uck!
"And are there any well-known facts about people who spell it wrong?"
Since it is not actually a word, there is no way to spell it wrong. Just because hillbilly's use it incessantly, does not make it part of the English language.
What a nasty crack. Are you from Cleveland, dear?
So Paula Deen is diabetic. So what? There are pilots who are nearsighted, doctors who have chronic diseases, etc. She cooks what she cooks, and no one twists your arm and forces you to eat anything she cooks, or to even watch her television show or buy her cookbooks. Ms. Deen also does not force you to eat such huge portions of her food that you gain weight; most of her meals are meant to be eaten by large groups. If you eat sensible portions of any food, even a fattening treat occasionally, that will not cause you to become obese.
Please note that there are slim and healthy-looking people who have Type 2 diabetes. My father-in-law was skinny as a rail, did extensive yard work after putting in an eigh-hour non-desk job, wasn't fond of sweets, and very seldom ate large portions of fattening food. He still developed Type 2 diabetes in middle age.
Obesity is a direct cause of type II diabetes. Direct. Cause. That does not mean it happens exclusively to those who make poor food choices and lead a sedentary lifestyle. Do you condone cigarette smoking just because, hey, sometimes nonsmokers get cancer too, so light 'em up!
Paula Deen has been hawking unhealthy food for years, getting rich and hiding the fact that her own brand of cooking contributes to the development of a potentially deadly disease. Then, instead of coming out with a new, healthier approach to southern cooking, she starts making lining her pockets further by pushing drugs, when eating a little healthier and being a little more active would likely reverse her condition.
The words greedy and irresponsible come to mind.
"Her" food is the cuisine of an entire region - and the region of this country with absolutely the best food! Paula Deen didn't dream it up! She's made a lot of money because she's a charming woman and a good cook. There are dozens of poor cooks cooking your sprouts and wheatgrass and flax seeds out there. I assure you, many of them have gotten every bit as wealthy from the crap they're hawking. She just knows your audience. Oops - I've taken too much of your time - it's time for you to check your blood pressure, isn't it?
Bravo!!!! The pettiness of some of these people is breathtaking!
The issue here is not really that she has diabetes. It's that she intentionally hid it in order to continue capitalizing on the unhealthy recipes that she was peddling. Now that she has a deal with a drug maker, she reveals her disease in order to capitalize on curing the illness she helped promote in the first place. She's known that she had diabetes for THREE YEARS. During this time she has poo-pooed comments by Anthony Bourdain and other chefs who've criticized her for promoting an unhealthy diet and called Michelle Obama a hypocrite for eating the occasional chicken wing. Wow. The truth is home to roost now, Ms. Deen. Want to take any of those comments back? Doubt you'll hear her issue any much deserved apologies. I hope the drug company ditches her and she's left with no show and no drug endorsement. You ever hear the moral story about the cat and the fish?
Now I'm curious....I never have heard the story of the cat and the fish. What is it??
The official story is actually Aesop's fable, "The Dog and his Reflection." I was told a similar story as "The cat and the fish." A cat catches a fish and happens to glance down to see its own reflection in the water. Not understanding that its a reflection, the cat thinks that it will steal the fish from that other cat and end up with two fish. As it opens its mouth to steal the other fish, it loses the one it originally had. The moral of the story is not to be too greedy or you'll end up with nothing.
I do commend her from starting at nothing and getting where she is, but if you read her book you would understand that she just isn't all there anyway. What a nut!
Well said!!! I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about a month ago and have to take insulin everyday. What Paula Deen did for the last three years is a total disgrace!! I have NO respect for her.
It's wonderful to see all of the experts on Diabetes commenting here! Lots of doctors apparently? Oh, and just knowing that everyone eats perfectly and obviously doesn't have any weight issues is fantastic!
I don't support eating a crap diet filled with fried foods, pies galore and sugary drinks. We all know what we should and shouldn't be eating and that we should be moving a lot more than some of us are.
What I detest is the judgment that is throughout all of the commentary. Seriously? She DESERVES it? Because she eats horribly she deserves to have a disease that will most likely be the cause of her death one day?
How about... you deserve to have insidious cancers that spread through you like the venom you spit here. I have no compassion for the cruel a-holes that hide behind their little computers and judge everyone else on their lifestyle when it's obvious that they are lacking so much in their lives.
Disgusting degenerates.
Calm down, these are just nameless voices here, not a supreme court judge. Y'all don't sound so loving yerself.
They aren't just nameless voices...They are actual people condemning someone that has a horrendous disease. I won't be calm about that, not when it hits so close to home for me. And trust me – I am NOT feeling any love towards the majority of posters here.
Yup, it's infuriating, isn't it? Nobody deserves diabetes. My aunt and my mother had it and suffered a lot. And their great-aunt had it too. It runs from aunt to niece, actually. I've avoided it so far. I have a friend, a young woman, who has just gotten it too. People are so cruel and stupid.
Yes it is infuriating. I have no tolerance or for blatant cruelty and will respond accordingly.
Sorry that your family has had so much trouble with this horrendous disease but grateful that you've steered clear of it!
People think that if you're over weight, even grossly so, that 1: you'll get and 2: deserve it. Obviously neither are true.
So little is still known about type II yet, but what is obvious is that the stigma attached to it is making it a closet disease.
I don't think anyone here has wished diabetes or death on Paula Dean. It's obvious Nadine that you are a frequent eater of Paula's cuisine and are having a very difficult time getting those stubby, greasy little fingers to type fast enough. Go eat another deep fried Twinkie and check your blood sugar, for crying out loud. I think you're about to pass out!
The new American way-we fatten you up till you need our drugs till you die:(
This is nothing new, BUT - butter, eggs and sugar and mayonnaise, etc are only bad for you if THAT IS ALL YOU EAT.
A BALANCED diet consists of VEGETABLES and FRUITS (and good water). I've met people who have never had a vegetable in their entire lives except corn, and they are usually sick.
Sure its not the chocolate and candy and sugar I stuff my face with every day. It is genetics.
Well yess, in most cases, it is.
Can't believe it! She only uses a whole stick of butter for everything.
My cooking buddy and I always comment, "That gal fries her budder in budder. She outta become a representative for the national dairy association."
The next product Paula Deen and her family will sell to their customers: Your very own monogrammed rag on a stick to wash yourself as you become more obese.
Paula: Two words Diet and Exercise. Take responsibility; not the magic pill
Anthony Bourdain was right.
Yes, he was!
Garbage food is fine. The health industry has everyone so scared. The truth is, it's all about caloric consumption. If you are a man around 6 feet tall and take in only 1600 to 1900 calories a day, you will be very skinny and very, very healthy. As long as your'e getting just enough nutrition. You clearly need protein, fruits and veggies but a lot of it can be pure junk. Is it ideal, NO. Will you be healthier than those that take in 4000 calories of excellent food every day–YES!
If you don't believe me, try it for a year. It is hard to do though because you will be hungry. Look at the research done by Roy Walford and countless animal studies. Did you know that you can make a rat live twice as long simply by restricting it's diet?
Yes but he's one damned unhappy rat.
Not even a little bit true. The kinds of calories are far more important than the type.
Kinds and type are the same thing sir.
Not sure why everyone keeps preaching low fat/carb. Coupled with an active/healthy lifestyle ones diet should be a balance of approximately 40% protein, 30% carb and 30% healthy fats. If society threw in a moderate amount of exercise, stopped consuming more calories than they burn in a day and ceased to consume an unbalanced diet the obesity problem would be corrected.
True to form, Paula turns the disease she contracted from overindulgence into more and more money ( another form of overindulgence). She is nothing but an enormous mouth, devouring the world. I wonder whether her attitude will change when her paunchy "boys" follow in her diabetic footsteps.
She doesn't even eat her own food, so she says. Don't buy anything she's selling.
Paula: Type II diabetes is not a problem, just don't eat what I cook.
My favorite paula deen meal: Fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches. First you get 2 sticks of butter, then 3 slices of wonder white bread, then a cup of peanut butter with an old brown banana. Put it together and immerse in a deep fat fryer of lard. Oh, and don't forget 1/2 cup of mayonaise. Take out when brown and dripping with fat. Then pour yourself a generous helping of gravy in your glass to chase it down. When done, eat 1/2 of a cheesecake and roll your own turkish, unfiltered cigarettes to finish the meal.
I have lived and worked international for 20-yrs–the USA is a country full of obese fat people (unhealthy) compared to other civilizations I've encountered. . .they make fun of US fatso's. . it is remarkable to see the variance in the sizes of people in USA to other nationalities (mostly fat children I MEAN really FAT!!). . . plus what is so hilarious is TV ads in USA vs. other countries. . US ads for weight loss while people in other countries are basically "starving" to death. . sad but true. .
Unfortunately, thos countries are following in the US footstaps rather than us fowwing theirs. I always lose weight when I go to Europe. I can assure you I am not dieting while there. Eating locally is not a choice in France. It is a national pride. It is easier to make good choices there than here.
Here creations are a debacle and travesty to good cooking. If she wants to learn to be a GREAT cook then she needs to go to Europe where cooking is an art form, she can learn about "The Slow Food Movement." What she concocts borders on SWILL.
For cryin out loud, you people are negative!
How about this: If you don't like her show, or her cooking, just watch something else.
Or would that be too simple?
That would be more simple but nowhere near as fun as blabbing our traps here.
no, it's too simple.
I couldn't agree with you more! I don't understand people who would rather put someone down than to breath! I just hope someday, they will experience the negative comments about themselves that they are spewing out their mouths about Paula. I am sure they must have so much self-hatred to be saying such mean things about others.
Thank-you!
I am not surprise about what she has anymore.... I used to like her until I heard her saying she is a smoker.. All the respect I had for her went down the toilet...
So you're saying that you don't ever associate with smokers? Ever?! Yeah, I highly doubt that.
Interesting. I wonder about the damage that must've been done to her taste buds by smoking. That might explain some of the fat-hyped flavors she seems to advocate: maybe nothing less vividly fatty and seasoned tastes good to her.
She could give a rip what everyone thinks of her. She has already laughed her azz off to and from the bank a hundred times. Now she will hawk some new drug for diabetes while you still stuff your pie holes with her cooking. Hahahahaha!
Amazing. She eats like a pig and instead of promoting health and maybe excercising to eliminate her diabetes, she partners with a sleazy drug company. That is really sad. Sometimes people make me sad.
Right on chubby!!! She's big and greedy.
I would say that most of the celebrity chefs on food network, if they eat the food that they cook regularly, will wind up with type 2 diabetes.
Now, Paula, is your chance to become a champion for the cause. How about a healthy, sugar free, low fat, low carb cooking series?
You CAN turn around Type 2 diabetes with minimal drugs and in a relatively short period of time. I was a type 2 with an A1C of 14.8, and within six months all my numbers were just like a normal person, my doc told me that he would never have believed I was a diabetic unless he had seen my results from six months before.
All it takes is dedication to lifestyle and diet changes. I took metformin for about 3 months, and now take no drugs and never, ever test. I go for my quarterly blood test and all is well.
Good for you!!!!!! I believe like you, but people are too lazy to excersice and eat better..... Paula, what a dumb idea that is.
tell me how you got your A1C down in 6 months. i need to do that also.
So the 8 Tabs of butter and the 4 Score salt means a tasty dish. Of course it does. "Me and my family eat this everyear!!.
It's just tasty Ya'LL..........................
Eat fat, you get fat AND you get Type II diabetes, heart disease, colon cancer and the like.
There's way more money in curing this crap than preventing it. We'll never get people to eat right and exercise, eventually the doctor who discovers how to grow a new pancreas in a lab or cure diabetes with a pill will be a billionaire Nobel Prize winner. They did the same thing with sex. They spent thousands of years trying to tell people not to have sex, eventually they just said "screw it" (literally) and invented the pill.
LEAVE PAULA ALONE....sniff,sniff.
NO WAY! A fat old southern lady who cooks crap everyday got diabetes? HOW COULD THAT BE! Idiot.
Why do these great cooks like Paula and all the celebrity chefs have these cookoffs to see what delicious recipes they can come up with that contain high carb/high fat ingredients? Any dingdong can think of great recipes with these kinds of ingredients. Why not have celebrity chefs come up with fantastic tasting HEALTHY low fat/low carb recipes. Now, yes, that would be a HUGE challenge, but it could be done. That would be a challenge worth rewarding. And...while they are at it, please use ingredients that the average person would have at home...I'm fresh out of wild squid this week!
Swestey, The Food Network used to have an Ellie Krieger show that was really good. If you're looking for simple, healthy recipes that have normal ingredients, try her website.
I was diagnosed type 2 a year and a half a go. Read "Good Calories, Bad Calories," by Gary Taubes for a well-documented, science-based explanation of why we are sick.
Since diagnosed and reading the above book and a few others, I have since increased my level of exercise, have eaten no sugar and eat very little carbohydrates (only what is natural in fruits and vegetables). I drink only water, tea, or coffee. No diet drinks that mimic sugar. I have seen my A1C go from 9.0 to 5.6 and my fasting glucose level now averages near 85. I lost 27 lbs in 3 months and can now run over 5 miles a day. My triglycerides went from 300 to 75 and I now have a nearly perfect cholesterol ratio – all this by eating fruits, nuts, vegetables, lots of high-quality meat and fish, cheese and peanut butter. Good fat is not the problem, its the abundance of carbs (high-quality whole grains included) and the sugar that are killing us.
Read the book. It's based on hard scientific and historical evidence. I challenge anyone who has this problem. But it will require a lifestyle change.
THANK YOU BOB. I don't have diabetes but I am overweight with the unhealthy 'apple' shape. Just read a new book called 'Wheat Belly' which sounds like the same info. as your book. We get addicted to tastes but once we get over that, it becomes a healthy challenge to replace a 'filler food' like pastries and pastas with veggies, nuts, super soups and salads. Now I eat bread maybe once a week, haven't had pasta in a month and really, without feeling deprived or crazy, have lost 6 lbs. I not only feel lighter but smarter! LOL I only use EVOO, coconut oil and small amounts of butter for flavor. Nothing processed....our fast-foods are killing us as much as anything. All those chemicals are bad news. Shop the perimeters, people.
It's amazing how everyone wants to condemn her cooking, yet many of you are eating and drinking things 10 times worse than what she ever cooked! If this weren't true, many restaurants and bars would be out of business!!! Some cooking shows are geared around meals you make every night and others, like Mrs. Deens, are not always an "every night" or "every week" meal. I don't believe she ever said her show was a healthy eating show full of low fat, low cal dishes. Yes, she should exercise, like everyone should and no, the world does not need to know all of her business! You would have had her in a grave by now with your words! I know people who are very small with diabetes. They don't look unhealthy but their eating habits, lack of exercise and genetics played a big part in them developing diabetes. People don't criticize them because they aren't overweight, yet, they are so unhealthy. Some of you "judges" need to be careful how you talk about people. Many of you are ticking time bombs right now bcz of your lifestyles and you don't even know it! What are people going to say about you when your diagnosis is revealed? Think before you talk about others, even if they are celebrities!
I'm sure no one is surprised. Next she will announce she has been taking medication for years for high blood pressure. The only healthy one in the family is Bobby. I watch her show because she is entertaining, not to learn to cook like her. I have heard her say "I don't eat like this every day." If she did, she would have to be rolled onto the stage! Now that the cat is out of the bag, it's time to chuck all of her old shows and start new ones, using less sugar and butter, but, PLEASE, not another diet show!!!!!
She's a big part of the problem! She's on TV to educate people-instead she's showing them how to eat crap and live a an unhealthy lifestyle. Then to top it off, she's getting paid to put a band-aid on it with drugs. The new American way-we fatten you up and stick you on drugs for the rest of your life!
While I don't wish poor health upon anybody, it's almost laughable that Dean has Diabetes. Aside from her weight, her style of cooking is an obvious factor in her diagnosis. The worst part is that so many health experts have warned against following her recipes and yet she still defended them, most likely in the name of self promotion and profit. I hope she's banked enough of her earnings to pay for the health issues she's facing.
Yes, eating that kind of food everyday will make you sick in the long run, but everything in moderation is fine. I eat mostly fruits, veggies, and lean meat all week long, plus exercise six days a week, then have a restaurant meal on Saturday nights that most would consider "unhealthy". Sometimes I even have a piece of cake, pie or ice cream. Guess what–I'm not fat, I don't have diabetes, etc.
If you sit in your house and never go out and just eat raw vegetables you may "live" to be 100 but is that really "living"?
Who's the blond lady chef with a show? Anne....Burel?? She flat out told us one day, "You may not like to hear this but the reason you enjoy restaurant food is because they flavor it so much. We're taught in cooking school that your pasta water should taste as salty as the Mediterranean!"
Don't feel the least bit sorry for her. What did she think was going to happen with the kind of diet she chooses to maintain?
So someone who is basically instructing people on how to make disgustingly unhealthy meals is also working with a pharmaceutical company that sells drugs to treat problems borne of unhealthy diet. I feel better already. Maybe instead of working with Big Pharma to make more money from people's bad habits, she could design a recipe that tastes good with less than 3 sticks of butter in it.
And don't give me that BS that "its genetic" – there are reasons that we have 100 times as many cases today as we did forty or fifty years ago, and Paula is one of them.
To all who are putting Paula down: How would you like to live your life under a microscope? I am sure there is a lot that can be picked apart about your life including your eating habits and the way you speak.
The difference is, she is 100% to blame for her problem. She cooks poison and eats it. People making fun of her are doing so because she deserves it. I fully acknowledge this might be exaggeration, but seeing the slop she cooks, I'm fairly sure a single meal she does has at least 3 days worth of calories in it.
I haven't read that she is blaming her health issues on someone else. I pitty anyone especially any children that may come across your path if you think it is okay to make fun of someone because of their eating habit, size, etc. Your screen name says it all for you....................
@Barb... people who use the phrase "it's genetics." are using code words for... my momma and daddy had it to, they passed it on to me. The truth is that many people can avoid this by proper diet and change of lifestyle. You can blame your parents for setting a bad example, but you can also change those habits.
She's not blaming it on anyone else, but she's dodging the issue that her cooking led to this. She's made a lot of money on TV and in books teaching people to cook like that. She's training people to be unhealthy and to acquire a disease. Yes, people are responsible for their own actions, but it's quite well known that celebrities and TV wield considerable influence. She should acknowledge what she has done (in the name of getting rich).
Barb, let me guess. You're 5'2" and 230 lbs? Good to know.
Ben Dover, let me guess...... You are an idiot. There is no reason you would assume I am short and over weight. Just because I am sticking up for NOT making fun of people over their appearance does not mean I am heavy. You are probably one of those kind of people who may look good on the outside but really inside you are UGLY! :) Have a nice life!
go away troll
Anyone using the name Ben Dover cannot be taken seriously. Go troll somewhere else.
Barb, I bet you're a real peach. Lol. A rather LARGE peach.
Ben Dover.........I just found out your real name............ Richard Crainium. That suits you to the tee! Have a great life hating yourself. :)
She did not just suddenly appear under the spotlight. She worked with an agent, she sought out publicity, and she signed contracts drawing attention to her lifestyle. At that point, she was asking us... the public... to follow her way of cooking and eating. She has made quite a bit of money in doing so... which means she is now open to the criticism she is receiving.
(1) She put herself under that microscope; no one forced her on the magazine covers and into the television shows; (2) she makes an AWFUL lot of money for that. If she doesn't like it, she should just head on home. . .but she doesn't.
Is that a picture of a Paula Deen Halloween mask?
Are you just plain rude or are you an idiot?
Hmmm....let's see. She's overweight and has publicly admitted to being a smoker. It has been proven that Type II diabetes can be controlled with diet and exercise. She chooses to be a paid spokesperson for BIg Pharma. Wouldn't want to make serious lifestyle changes instead of being injected with drugs now would we? Pathetic.
Hey Paula – what you need is not drugs. Those drugs are only going to make things worse. You need to get your diabetes under control through diet and exercise.
Stop blaming Paula (and everyone/thing else) for your diets. Take responsibility for your own health. It's your own fault if you eat what she makes. Everyone should know by now that a pound of butter in a recipe is going to have serious health consequences. People aren't going to wake up if we don't start holding them accountable for their own stupid decisions. And before you start in on - "But the kids! They might see it!! Ahhhh!" Well, for children who are young enough to not know any better, their /parents/ should clue them in. Personal accountability is seriously lacking in this country.
You are spot on. People need to take responsibility for their own actions and stop blaming others.
Thank you! Finally a sensible comment!
We should be blaming Winnie the Pooh. http://tinyurl.com/7ep2lhu
Sorry, this is supposed to be news? Watch her cook, look at her figure and tell me that you are surprised! This is not being insensitive, this is the shocking truth. Baby boomers are going to die horribly grotesque deaths because they didn't take care of themselves.
Absolutely correct! So, it bugs me when these doctors say, "We don't know what causes Type II diabetes." They know that excess weight, inactivity, and high carb diets are the answer, except maybe in the case of Viet Nam vets who because they were exposed to Agent Orange have a higher frequency of Type II diabetes...and I don't think Paula was in Viet Nam! Many of the younger people these day are going to die young from Type II diabetes...and we're supposed to be the generation that would outlive all other generations. It's not going to happen. "The Doctors" program had a show on how this younger generation would live a shorter life than their parents because of Type II diabetes.
Have you seen the oversized caskets they have to build now for their fat azzes to be buried in?
A high carbohydrate diet will promote onset of Type II diabetes. Why? When you eat sugars, the sugar is absorbed into the blood, raising the blood glucose. This increases the production of the hormone insulin. And insulin is our fat storing hormone. In large amounts, insulin prevents fat burning and stores surplus nutrients in the fat cells. After some time, few hours, or less, this would result in a shortage of nutrients in the blood – creating cravings. Hence the "sugar high, and sugar crash" cycles we experience after eating carbs. People usually eat more, causing the cycle to continue.
Low carbs = steady blood glucose and lower amounts of insulin = preventing Type II diabetes.
Keep cooking like that Paula, and diabetes will be the least of your problems! And shame on you for encouraging others to eat unhealthfully. BTW, I love Anthony Bourdains jabs at you any chance he gets!
and what's the Food Network positon on all of this? how they feel about hyping her junk food diet?
They don't give a rip so long as they can pad their bottom line with fat azzes like you watching their shows and commercials.
I guess in the celebrity world there is no life event that can't be turned into a marketing opportunity.
I get tired of people like Paula who write books and say, "I haven't had to change the way I eat...everything in moderation." Well, yes, diabetics do need to change the way they eat, because obviously they were not eating everything in moderation to begin with! Come on, Paula, 'fess up...tell it like it really is! You are a role model for others so tell the truth. Even if you are on meds now, you can't just continue to eat the way you used to.
if you think this lady is a role model, i have border-front property in Arizona to sell you.
Moderation? Just look at her backside, she has no idea what the word "moderation" means.
She has the Diabeet's??
Marketing Opportunity!!!! - > Paula Dean Butter Flavored Insulin!!
Heeee hawwwww!
:)
She is the only one I will not watch on the FOOD channel. Her use of the English Language is a joke.
i agree. the combination of grammar, accent, and talking through her nose makes it unbearable to watch. guy fieri ranks pretty high on my unwatchable list, too, though. despite some pretentiousness being required to be a tv chef, his is just through the roof.
Contessa is fat and she uses a lot of butter too.
Ina Garten? The only thing I don't like about her show is its name. I don't want to think about her bare feet while watching food being made.
and she is veryyyyy borringgggg!!!!! I wonder how is she still in the air...?
man, its a lot of evil people posting comments today!! Mean people suck large!!!
You must be a fat ass too
L M A O!
You are an idiot! It used to be more of a secret but know everyone knows!
I guess her "message of moderation" includes a Krispy Kreme donut burger topped with bacon and an egg. Yeah. She obviously didn't release the news of her diabetes because it could ruin her brand and make her look like a fool for preaching excessive eating. Probably wanted to sell a few more cookbooks before it was all over. It's sad – she could be taking the stance that she made a mistake with her life and lead the way to health for others who are addicted to food, rather than touting some miracle drug which (from the sounds of what she's saying), will allow her to keep on eating. At least she's rich enough to pay for her health care. The majority of her follower are likely not.
I've never understood her allure, and I love watching cooking shows (Food Network junkie, Travel Channel, etc). Her cooking is average everyday stuff, loaded up with butter and cream.. If the message she was trying to send was eat my crap which is in almost every way bad for you, get diabetes, and then get rich signing a multimillion dollar endorsement deal promoting a drug to help with your diabetes, she succeeded. I still don't see how she ever succeeded in cooking.
Butter and creme do not cause diabetes. The French show that.
You're delusional. NO ONE in France heaps sticks of butter, gobs of sugar and copious amounts of lard on their food, they like to taste it. She does.
She needs to correct her use of the English Language as much as she needs to correct her way of cooking.
"Mama knows best!" Mama knows how to inject her insulin and can show you how too since diabetes is not a death sentence! Go ahead, dump another cup of sugar in that milkshake and Novo Nordisk will make everything A-OK!
Just loose some of that weight and it will go away. Type 2 can be corrected unlike Type 1.
That statement is very misleading.
Type II diabetes is degenerative. The number of beta cells is constantly decreasing.
There are two conditions that cause Type II diabetes. Insufficient insulin and insulin resistance. Being overweight hurts in two ways. The insulin you have has to be divided by more weight and belly fat increases insulin resistance.
So if you are over weight, losing weight will help. But, if you are producing too little insulin, even being at your ideal weight, you may still need medication.
Trans fats have also been implicated in insulin resistance. Omega fatty acids help to decrease it. Cold water fish (salmon and tuna), flax seeds, hemp seeds, evening primrose, black walnuts and others are sources of omega fatty acid.
Exercising will also help reduce insulin resistance as well as helping losing weight.
So, exercise, lose weight, eat smaller more frequent meals, avoid sugar etc. But, no matter what you do, you may still need medication and should keep up with medical care and test your blood sugar.
Big misconception and myth. Once you have Type 2, you have it for life. There isn't a cure and it doesn't go away. Even if you live a perfectly healthy lifestyle you will always have it. You can control the severity of it and maybe not be insulin dependent through diet & exercise.
Ooooo Oooooo, lets leave it to all the uneducated commenters, they know more than those who battle it daily.
Yes, her type of cooking is not healthy. But she should not have to change her style of cooking. Moderation just like with alcohol!
MODERATION? Some of her "cooking" should NEVER be eaten.
Why are you all hating on Paula? I enjoy watching her show and love seeing her. So most of her recipes are unhealthy but she is the only person on Food Network I would eat their cooking.
She would not be so repulsive if she would learn to speak english and not that crappola she talks.
I heard she has a new grandson...Yall Dean....Come here Yall Dean and eat this stick of butter!
You should consider Ina Garten – I use many of her recipes. They are more appetizing and sensible. She is delightful as well.
Whaatttttt??????? OMG of all the shows, hers is the one iI can't stand.. she is soo boring..
Enjoy your "Diabeet's" !!!
You have a serious disconnect from reality. This is why America is so fat/obese. The food not only tastes bad, it's bad for you.
This really makes sense. Paula Deen advocates and pushes the use of rich, greasy, cholesterol rich, unhealthy foods that cause diabetes, then starts working for a drug company selling questionable drugs with side effects that can cause even more health issues. It' s just the way she is, yet common sense works better: http://healingnews.com/Healing_Diabetic_article101.html
Since the US has turned away from fat the country has gotten fatter so they eat even less fat and have gotten fatter and diabetes where countries that have not turned away from fat don't have the problem. Do you see the problem?
Who says the country has turned away from fat? I don't see that fast food consumption has decreased. There is a lot of information out there about the dangers of a poor diet, but many people continue to eat their old unhealthy diets.
You don't have to be fat. I was 6'-5" and 230 lbs and worked out a lot. Job in construction. Non smoker, light drinker. But I consumed huge amounts of Coca-Cola and fruit juices over the years. At 60 went to the Dr and my sugar was 600. There are a lot of misconceptions out there about this disease but I learned one thing. No matter how big and strong you are it will take you down and kill you if not addressed properly.
David same thing with me I loved Cola but 39 grams of sugar a can will kill U
It was tough getting off of Marko but I eventually did it. I'm a water and MIO guy now. Great stuff. Its amazing that all the things you were raised on as good for you turns out being bad for you.
Fruit juice is about as unhealthy as you can get.
Her comment, " I had nothing to bring to the table" is wrong. What she could have brought to the table is " this is how you cook if you are diabetic, pre-diabetic, or want to avoid either of those conditions." About 70% of North America. At best, her lack of action is irresponsible. As a TV cook, she does have some responsibility.
EXACTLY!!!
No, she doesn't have responsibility. She never told anyone that this was healthy food. She never never said eating this food every night for dinner was a good idea. All she did was show you how to cook food that she likes. She said it herself – she's not your doctor, she's a cook. If you eat unhealthy it's YOUR responsibility.
Exactly. Thank you for pointing that out. All of a sudden, she's acting like she is a role model, when she was the cause of the health mess in the first place. I hope people who have been using her recipes will wake up and learn.
So wait, she knew about this for three years and STILL kept suggesting to people that they should cram their faces full of butter? Good show, Paula. Good show.
Yep. "Well a gal's got to make a living somehow, doesn't she?"
What's interesting is Graham Kerr went thru something similar in the 70's. He was creating gourmet means high in fat & calories as the Galoping Gourmet. Then his wife had a stroke & a massive heart attack. THEN his comeback was creating the same meals he was hawking before, but making them MUCH healthier.
Would that Paula learned from his mistakes rather than her sons showing her up.
She's obese, stupid and cooks food guaranteed to ruin your health. Anthony Bourdain was right and we all knew it. She's cooking pure lard and garbage. No wonder the rate of obesity has tripled in America since 1980 and over 65% of all American's are at various stages of obesity.
Absolutely correct!! Thanks for the relevant points. 100%
DONT EAT IT THEN! People get so worked up over how "unhealthy" someone else is. If you want to eat a lettuce wrap go for it, if you want to eat a bowl of butter and a pound of sugar go for that too. At the end of the day what does it really matter?
When you're 65, diabetic, slowly dying from all of that butter and lard, and overloading the medicare system due to your poor lifestyle, then yes, it DOES become all of our business!!
.. because the majority who do raise the cost of Medicaid and private insurance for the rest of us. Diabetes results in so many other illnesses. I have the right to do anything I want, but if I love myself and others, I will do what is best for myself, my family, and my neighbor..
Yes, it DOES matter! Paula is paying the price now, and how many others are doing the same? Abusing the body by shovelling in unhealthy food will catch up with a person. Unhealthy eating yields poor health. Period.
Butter and lard do not cause diabetes. An overload of carbohydrates (bread, potatoes, flour products, anything with sugar in it) is what stresses insulin production, leading to Diabetes Type II. Americans eat way to much food with extra sugar, and a diabetes cautious diet is good for even those unaffected. Do you know they put sugar on McDonald's fries? Nobody needs that.
Anothony Bourdain smokes. I guess that makes him stupid in your book too?
Interviewer: "Why didn't you come forward with this news sooner?"
Paula: "Well I hadn't yet signed a lucrative deal with a drug company that will give hope to those who don't want to stop eating crap."
I like the cut of your jib.
Being forthright would also reflect on her "I cook with butter and load things with sugar" cooking reputation. She's a con artist who doesn't want the cash cow to go away. Her restaurant in Savannah is over priced and the food is just passable but she's made so much money on her fame that the tourists gobble the BS up (excuse the pun). The Pink House is Savannah is what Paula would love to be as far as an authentic southern dining experience.
Paula has diabetes? Shocking.. I was expecting her to be found dead one day with 1000 sugar and 2500 cholesterol, becoming an example of what happens when you combine sugar and butter. She would be a better service to mankind by being an example..
There is nothing wrong with sugar and butter or Paula Deen's cooking as long as you consume it in moderation. That's the thing that a lot of people seem to be forgetting – that you don't have to eat like a fat slob every day of your life.
I wanted to bring something to the table she says .. Really ? The only thing this fat ax wanted to bring to the table was a paycheck for herself.. She is utterly disgusting !
C'mon Douggie....don't be a hater just because you're not rich and famous....grab a big chunk of deep fried mac and cheese....it will help your miserable disposition......
What a fraud this woman is. I have always said her cooking was some of the unhealthiest I'd ever seen. And by the way she isn't a chef, the only reason she didn't disclose her health issues in the three years that she knew about them is GREED! She and the Food Network know ratings will drop after people find out the host is killing herself with her own recipes, take the money and run lady as the network is contemplating how to move to a host who isn't a hypocrite and a fraud. Honesty is the best policy.
Yes, and the Food Network is trying to save face with Paula's sons healthy food show. Disgusting money-grabbing hypocrites. I'd like to see how he makes a donut-egg-bacon-burger healthier for you. "Mama knows best!" Yes, mama knows how to inject her insulin and can show you how! And diabetes is not a death sentence so continue eating deep-fried bacon-wrapped mac-n-cheese! Fat cuntry cow laughing all the way to the bank and the grave.
Why is this a story????? Who cares about Paula Dean?
The same could be said of you and your post. Troll along now, troll along.
I find it adorable when people use the term troll out of context because they don't understand it.
You remind of a 4th grader calling someone a troll especially when you don't understand the concept of what a forum troll is. There's a name for you too: Pathetic loser.
1. troll
One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument
Johnny & JuneCleaversBe aver, here you are, supporting my use of the word. Pot, meet kettle.
The millions of people who watch her show and think cooking with a pound of butter and sugar every meal is okay.
Obviously not a cold, insensitive person such as yourself.
Cuz I'm paying way too much in health insurance premiums because of millions of poor-eating americans encouraged by this fat greedy sow.
"Hey Y'all! My cooking'll kill ya!"
The only thing more delicious than her food is the irony of this situation.
This is about as shocking as if Anthony Bourdain announced he had lung cancer!
Bah-ha-ha-ha!
And the article fails to say that Paula is a smoker too. She was on Dr Oz recently and announced it.
Or liver disease from all the drinking.
I think the government should create a police force to make EVERYONE eat grass clippings with water. I'm sure that's the PC solution to all the nation's health problems. We can all be beautiful liberal people!! LOL.
You should try meeting a liberal some time. They are not the stereotypes that you think they are.
I have and they are. Look at some of the posts here.
Actually, I think that Michelle Obama is working on that.
Encouraging people to eat healthy and exercise is not a bad thing.
JR you are classic – this is an article about Paula Deen having diabetes and you manage to blame it on the liberals!! Too funny. I think the black (liberal) helicopters are re-fueling it's okay to leave the house for an hour.
I don't think he'd feel safe leaving the house for any length of time. He'd have to disconnect the foil-covered colander on his head and that's way too scarey for him.
We like it when "conservatards" pack their massive ASSets with all of that fried dough and lard . . It makes you go away sooner . .
Sorry, JR, you take the 'cake' for being a jerk. Hope it's slathered with 'liberal' amounts of sand and gravel.
And lardibetes. And cholestebetes. And stupidetes.
Let me guess...Now someone will sue her because they got FAT eating from her cookbook. Oh, and their kids got FAT too. Yep, I can see it now.......Goodbye Food TV. Freekin FAT SLOBS!
How is she still alive?
Well, technically Paula type two diabetes is a death sentence. One that you completely own considering your clear lack of healthy eating and fitness regimen. If I ate southern fried cooking every day I'd have type two diabetes as well. In a way I'm shocked Paula didn't get diagnosed with diabetes sooner.
I'm surprised she hasn't had a heart attack (or two) by now. I hope people are listening and learning about the "rewards" eating that type of fattening, unhealthy food.
Since she held this news for years I wouldn't be surprised if she already had a heart attack but didn't want it to hurt her ratings.
Life is a death sentence, Chris. No one is going to get out of life alive. So DM 2 is a complication of life. Deal with it.
Cheer up. Life doesn't have to be dismal.
Made one of her recipes once. Decided it was a once-a-year recipe at best, there was so much butter and cream in it.
Paula: Eat better and lose weight and your diabetes might just go away. Don't turn to drugs to support your eating habit.
Seriously Anthony Bourdain was right about this menance. She is the most dangerous cook(a term used loosely for her) on the planet. Eat it in moderation but I will show you how to make it everyday... well that's life aint it Paula
Google Anthony Bourdain on Paula Deen and Rachel Ray it is hillarious and accurate. True chefs inspire, hags like Paula teach us about putting crap in our mouths. CNN has a story on the villiage of eternity a place in Italy where the average age is 95, no heart disease or cancers or diabetes, all suggested due to diet, fresh food, organic, no fats, olive oils, wine, quality ingredients. But you're right Paula, we can't enjoy if we don't eat lard aww shucks
Fats don;t cause diabetes. It is carbs.
wow. FALSE statement. So, False.
Niether fats nor carbohydrates "cause" type II diabetes. Obesity and lack of exercise strongly predisposes one to diabetes.
And Italy with its pastas and breads have the highest levels of diabetes right? Believe it or not the highest prevelance of diabetes comes from India where there is tons of fats and clarrified butter. What gets me everytime is people eating processed foods, or foods dripping in grease and then look for excuses to why they got sick. Go overseas towards any of the Mediterranean counties, Greeece, Italy, Spain, you will taste food and quality the likes your tastebuds have never experienced. Fresh foods, meats that taste like they were meant too not processed genetically modified crap. Grain fed organic free range are not buzz words, eat it a few times and then notice the difference in quality. Past summer I had fresh strawberries from my own garden that were grown naturally, not a single chemical, and they tasted like globes of heaven, why would I take Paula's suggestion of taking it and putting a glaze on it they putting a pie fillin on it they putting butter all over that pie topping they bakin it then putting whip cream all over it and going hmmm I got diabetes my diet may be a piece of the puzzle. It is no puzzle why you got diabetes lady!
Well, Brilliant, first of all it is fat DOESN'T (not don't). Secondly, excess carbs are stored as fat. However...how would someone who doesn't know proper English be expected to know that?
Correct. Fat does not cause diabetes, carbs do. Eating fat does not create cholesterol – it's when you eat carbohydrates + fat that creates cholesterol buildup. LCHF (Low Carb High Fat) – it's just science.
And Bourdain drinks alot and I think dabbles in a few other things.......Paula Deen's cooking/recipes are not responsible for diabetes. We live in a free society where we are able to make our own choices. Censoring specific foods is akin to book burning......get a grip people....no one is forcing you to eat high fat, high sugar foods........
Well, Paula's paying the price now. How many others who have followed her are also battling health problems? You're right - nobody is forcing anybody to eat any of this stuff. It's a shame that it's so easily promoted and that weak-willed people can't choose healthier eating instead of shovelling this crap in their mouths.
Yes, I love the Freedom in America, Freedom get Diabetes at the expense of other people's health and Freedom to Inspire Diabetes in others thru her food channel.. is especially precious.. What would we do without these freedoms.... live in slavery..?
Yes, Anthony was right, and I hope his message is heard by all. This woman has promoted this unhealthy eating for too long. How many others have suffered health problems and weight gains because of her FATTENING, UNHEALTHY cooking (I hate to use the term "cooking", because what she does with food is disgraceful.)
Not me, I don't use her recipes...........
It's a TV show you j erkoff. Do you really live your life based on what people on TV do/tell you?
Do you slap on bronzer, gold chains and a wife beater before you head to the beach to make an a$$ out of yourself?
Do you take your daughter to 45 hours of dance class each week and tell her she failed if she misses a step?
If the answer is 'no' (which I'm REALLY hoping for), then apply the same logic here...and don't tear into a person you probably have never watched...or do you blindly agree with everything that Anthony Bourdain says? Cuz I'm sure I can find SOMETHING he's made that's not 100% healthy. Unless.....that's right! You eat it in MODERATION!!!!
Time to pick up your daughter at dance class and head to the beach.
There, there. Have another couple dozen Krispy Kremes, and you'll be fine.
Wow are you stupid! How many out there practise moderation if they watch paula daily, people live by whatever Oprah says, there are tons of people out there that watch way too much tv. If you are on tv, show us how to live better, live longer, live happier, not do what Paula does. Oprah while I am not a fan of, tries to make others lives better, eating fats and crap does not make anyone better. Furthermore tons of her recipies should never be eaten in moderation as they should never be eaten period. Bourdain himself isnt a role model but he was right about what he stated about paula and rachel ray. Atleast bourdain admits his smoking is a bad filthy habit he doesnt say but it's ok to do it moderately. It's like that Man vrs Food guy, seriously do you need to eat pounds of garbage and make it seem so delicious. It is the wrong message to send to people out there.
Stupid?? You clearly didn't get my point. Let me try to dumb this down further for you...
IF YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE AND MAKE YOUR THOUGHTS BASED ON TV – YOUR ARE A MORON!!!
Make decisions for yourself, numbnut.
*YOU ARE A MORON
I guess I am a moron, you see a while back I watched the Jamie Oliver School lunches show, I admit I wasnt paying attention to what my kid was eating at her school where we paid for her to get a hot lunch. I admit like a moron I watched that show and made my decision based on that to learn what was really being eaten in schools, and things have changed with what we eat and home, work and school now. Suddenly my 7 year old is the only girl in her class to know what artichokes, leeks, and asparagus are. Nobody is saying that tv should rule our lives, but many people get thoughts, ideas from them. There are people who get ideas on what to read from tv personalities that doesnt make them morons. If Paula promotes a better way of eating there is nothing wrong in taking bits of her advice into your own life. But seeing as you get nothing from tv and live your life according to your own ideas 100% of the time, you are super awesome dont change a thing.
See....had you expressed yourself that way initially, I'd be back to work and you'd be doing whatever it is you do.
I understand your point, and I think (after weeding through your much appreciated sarcasm) that you understand mine. I believe that you can rely, somewhat, on what you hear on TV (from certain sources), but..haha...you have to maintain moderation.
She made a bread pudding out of Krispy Kremes once.......I say the diabetes was worth it
she's the champion of deep fried butter. she'll have heart disease next.
Love to see how she's gonna take the diabetes medication and turn it something ya'all love, maybe cooking the meds with some clarified butter and bacon dripping, then ya'all take that diabetes medicine put it in a mould and let it harden then deep-fry till golden, and remember ya'all don't take it like that everyday, moderate how often you do that, but it sure does taste good doing down my gullet
She has diabetes? I would never have expected it from the woman who gave us:
Baked macaroni in cheese, wrapped in bacon, dipped in egg, battered and then deep fried....
What a joke. She is at fault for her diabetes. No sympathy for people who get sick from themselves.
^ this
It doesn't appear that she's asking for anyone's sympathy......why are you villifying Paula Deen because she has diabetes? She 's been on TV for years cooking all the good stuff....it's not like she's been closeted about her eating habits. Once again, it 's the media that's making a frenzy of this......make sure you blog the next time Mr and Mrs O step out for a cheeseburger and fries.......
The reason why people are jumping all over her is that she was NOT forthcoming about her diabetes for the past 3 years. It's only now that she has a deal with Big Pharma and a way to make $$ off her disease that she's come forward.
I'm not at all suprised that she has Type 2 diabetes, and I would not be surprised if she had a stent or two in her arteries. She's not a fraud, but she is a hypocrite and greedy.
wow, maybe instead of becoming a spokesperson for drugs and continuing to inject herself with exogenous materials, how about she make some simple lifestyle changes???! Do people really value their food over their quality of life?
You can tell you're a greenhorn. First of all, anyone impressed with themselves enough to call themselves "MedStudent12" in really a newbie at the profession. Secondly...duh...yes, many do, as you will see.
One more comment: There's a big difference between what you learn in school and what actually happens in the real world. Too much book learning and not enough experience!
So you're going to be a Dr. with a fantastic bedside manner and lots of compassion and empathy for your patients.....obviously.
Everything in moderation! Let's see how well Paula does with that. I do enjoy watching her shows but again – moderation is the key.
MODERATION? Some of her ideas should NEVER EVER EVER be eaten. How many times is it OK to eat a donut-egg-bacon-burger or dump CUPS OF SUGAR into a milkshake or DEEP FRY STICKS OF BUTTER? And now she's telling the world diabetes is not a death sentence. "It's not that bad being a diabetic!! Go ahead and eat my junk!" Offensive, disgusting and greedy.
Shocker. I gag when I see her cooking. WAY too rich.
She can have my blood sugar monitor that I no longer need because I do not eat anything she cooks up.
Well put! Congrats on control through lifestyle!
Can't wait to see what the commercials on her show will be now....big pharma.
In a world full of fast food joints and junk food I HIGHLY doubt that most obese people cook for themselves let alone from one of her cookbooks! I have several of her cookbooks and you would be hard pressed to find a receipe in them that has LESS THEN 10 ingredients! There is a lot of work (& ingredients) involved in making her food. The press is just trying to hang our nations "fat problems" on her b/c they want an easy out. NEWS FLASH – people who live on fast food and junk food are FAT. In my opinion most people who actually take the time to cook for themselves do it right! Everything is good in moderation!
Nonsense. Eating out or eating at home does not make people fat.
Paula Dean has diabete !! So do I !! Next
Maybe I 'll start my own blog. OMG
OMG! OMG! OMG!
Exactly!! People have had diabetes before Paula Deen and will have diabetes long after she's gone..........
She is a wonderful cook and mother. It is Obamas healthcare reform plan that should pay for her treatment.
If you want to pay no one will stop you but if you want me to pay than be prepared for a fight.
"Wonderful cook". WHAT A CROCK!!! She's brought this diabetes on herself. It's a shame she's promoted that self-destructive lifestyle for all of the world to see. BTW, Obamacare has nothing to do with this. Rant elsewhere.
She didn't "bring this on herself." If you think Diabetes is only a result of being overweight, how do you explain all the skinny people who eat right who get Diabetes? Any ideas there genius?
Obama's healthcare is an expansion of the PRIVATE insurance. I don't think you understand how it works (what a surprise). Just to clue you in – she (or her employer) will still have to pay for health insurance. Hopefully bringing everyone into the pool lowers the cost but the Affordable Care Act doesn't say the government is going to pay for us. Even the BEST mothers will still have to pay for their own healthcare which I'm pretty sure now the jury is out on Mrs. Deen.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. You like the sound of your own voice. Surprise, surprise.
Um ok.
HOLY CRAP, REALLY?!?!?! WHAT CAUSED IT?!?!?! I know it couldn't have been her diet!!!! It must be that she's just so darned sweet!! I bet she'd cure it if she stopped saying "yall" so much!!
I have thought about making a t-shirt that says, "Diabetics Are Just Too Sweet," but I think about as many people would get it as my, "Your Stupid" t-shirt.
Paula has Diabetes!!!! So do I ! Next
Lay off the carbs and cure yourself.
You automatically assume she has type 2 diabetes? If she has type 1, there's no current way to cure it. Even by "laying off the carbs." You might think along those lines before making an ignorant statement like that.
The major, MAJOR group of human maladies and illness can be traced directly to diet. Look at the constant television ads from pharma companies–high blood pressure, diabetes, acid reflux...ALL diet related. Americans are embarrassingly overweight and relying on the medical community to save us from ourselves....big pharma loves the complete and total lack of self control and disregard for our health.....they'll just continue to make pills and rob you blind while you stuff your faces. The human body was not designed or equipped to process fried foods and the chemicals that are poisoning everyone. HEY YALL.....watch what you eat.
Two cups of sugar and a stick of butter.
then ANOTHER stick of butter melted and poured on top
Nothing wrong with butter, it's the carbs that cause the fat people.
Type 2 diabetes can be reversed. But, where's the money for her to do that? Drug company endorsements and
the BIGGY – having to admit that eating her unhealthy style of cooking is a cause. Totally ridiculous! We must do our own research and take responsibility for the HIGH percentages of preventable diseases that we are paying the ultimate price for. After all – we don't want to hear that our diet is the source. Just give me a pill to fix it.
But, it doesn't fix it at all. Read "The China Study", watch – Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead, Forks Over Knives, Chow Down. The answer is out there but there is no money to be made by drug companies, hospitals, pharmacies and doctors if we are healthy just by eating unprocessed vegetables and fruits.
Ignorance isn't bliss – we are paying the price!
We preach diet every day to our diabetic patients. It is hardly our fault if they don't take our advice. The majority of diabetics got to the diagnosis through an unhealthy lifestyle. Changing ones lifelong habits is, most of the time, the most difficult challenge a doctor faces (and most of the time we fail). You conspiracy theorists need to open your eyes and see what is right in front of you. We are not protecting secrets to keep people sick. people stay sick because they are unwilling to sacrifice to change.
The China Study is a horrible example
R I G H T
Actually, a good cook should be something close to a doctor. Most of our woes come in through what we put in our mouths.
I know-just look at Monica Lewinsky!
John, that is a GEM!
I used to love Paula Deen (a successful, mid-life female who had debilitating panic attacks like I do).
Waiting 3 years, then selling a drug, both make her now seem like a common shill.
Shame on you, Paula.
The glare from her veneers is blinding me!!
I would love to see her cholesterol numbers too, especially since she's a chain smoker.
What a hypocrite! After pushing all of that horrible, fattening food (and it's a sin to call what she cooks, "food"), now she has the nerve to make more $$$ by pretending to be a role model for medication and eating in moderation. I wonder how many people who loved her recipes have found that they, too, are now diabetic.
It's the quantity that does it. If you think you can 4000 calories plus a day and remain healthy without an extreme amount of exercise then you're in for a huge shock. Her recipes, heck all recipes are fine as long as they don't have poison in them.
It's the quantity that does it. If you think you can 4000 calories plus a day and remain healthy without an extreme amount of exercise then you're in for a huge shock. Her recipes and all recipes are fine as long as they don't have poison in them.
especially because a lot of people who have diabetes are uneducated, they look up to role models like Paula. She is going to tell them that the other factors are the main cause, and they will believe her.
Just admit that you didn't want to come out about your diabetes because you were EMBARRASSED!
So,um...is there anything prohibiting these "people" from educating themselves about WTH they are eating, instead of "looking up to a role model" of some person on TV?
Sorry but,f it's that much of a concern,I say do your own research.
People mostly look up to role models instead of educating themselves. And I'm referring to the less-educated anyways.
This is appalling. I have had Type 2 for 12 years now. It's not easy and not really "fun", per se. And I can't say I always get it right. But I try. Paula Deen's cooking has ALWAYS been a death sentence. Just listening and reading recipes is enough to kill you. But, she is also WAY overweight (nothing against THAT, I have weight gain from diabetes and meds), and wouldn't you think she would have figured that out? And, she got diagnosed 3+ years ago and we are just finding out? So, what? During that 3 years, she kept recommending and cooking that horribly fat-infesting non-diabetic menu,,,,and shoveling it out to all her followers? For THREE WHOLE YEARS? Now, she gets a big contract with a drug company, and WHAT? she's talking about it? Go online and read the description of Victoza, the drug that this pharmaceutical company makes. Scares me....and I take diabetes meds. ALL meds have side effects, I get that. But this one is a bit over the top. Does she only hear the sound of money? She didn't care about her followers with the food thing, why would she care with the meds thing? Paula Deen should be BANNED. Can you really TRUST this woman?
Did you know that you can make a rat live twice as average simply by restricting it's diet?
Sadly, I think we've confused the dieting issue for decades now. Eat less. It's that simple. It's not the only part of the equation for staying healthy but for weight loss it's that direct. There was an article in a number of places about a nutritionist that ate horribly for months but ate fewer calories than he had been. *All* his numbers improved. Also interesting is that an increasing number of studies have been possibly debunking the link between cholesterol and heart disease.
Yup, she did it to herself, like most people with Type 2 diabetes.
Dee,
Too bad you know nothing about diabetes. It is not only caused by excessive food, fat, etc. It is also
genetic...it skips every other generation. My grandparents (maternal) great-great grandparent (maternal)
all had it, and myself and my brother both have it. He was 14 when diagnosed. I have had it since age 16,
when I was 6'2" and 147 pounds.
Next time, before you run your mouth, take your foot out first
Sorry, you're wrong. You have Type I diabetes which is genetic. Type II diabetes is caused by high caloric intake and lack of exercise–also plain old age. Do some research before you run your mouth.
There's a big difference between Type I and Type II diabetes. It sounds like you and your brother have Type I, which is genetic and not thought to be caused by lifestyle factors. Type II is mostly preventable.
@Paul Price – learn to read properly. I said Type 2 diabetes, which is, indeed, caused by poor eating habits. Type 1 diabetes is genetic.
Really, REALLY... I was diagnosed at 39 with type 2. My BMI was and is at 23. I already ate well and was very active. Learn something before you show your idiocy!
Maybe you don't eat as well as you think. Educate yourself on nutrition. Good luck with that.
BMI means nothing.
BMI was created by insurance companies to assess risk. My husband has a really high BMI but he's like 2% body fat. He has a high BMI due to incredible musculature in relation to his height. According to his BMI he's morbidly obese. He's far far far from obese.
Dee, my dear, you don't know squat about any of this.
@Nadine – The current type 2 diabetes epidemic in the U.S. is caused by poor dietary choices and a sedentary lifestyle. Those are the facts. You are clearly in denial.
Say it isn't so? How can someone eat like Paula and possibly develop Diabetes?
Will she next admit she wears WAY TOO MUCH makeup? I mean "HELLO" we live in an age of HD, tone that aluminum lake pancake morgue inspired lacquer down!!!!
Good for you Paula and I sincerely hope the best for you.
However, for people without health insurance or poor coverage (read affordable) this indeed would be akin to a death sentence.
Good lord, people. No one's saying you should eat her gooey butter cake every day. What's wrong with an occasional treat?
What I like about her show is that she shows how to make good QUALITY treats. I don't make desserts often, but if I do want to splurge on some calories, I want something that's going to be worth it. Most people mindlessly stuff themselves with crappy junk like chips and fast food. That's your real health problem.
Besides, she does make some healthy stuff, too. Check out her spinach stuffed mushrooms – they're incredible, and healthy, too!
I couldn't agree more. America is the most Victorian country on earth. What a bunch of prudes we are!
She has the best set of false chompers I"ve ever seen.
And what does that have to do with diabetes?
Love the holier than thous who eat ONLY the best and sit and condemn others and make rude comments on people. Must really hate your lives to get on here to put some one down to make yourselves feel better!!!
Glad that you made yourselves feel better at the expense of someone elses health.
I LOVE Paula Deen and her greasy fried foods. If I wanted something healthy then I would watch One of the million other health shows on tv.
What are you talking about!? Feel better at the expense of someone else's health!? Nobody commenting here is benefitting from anything at the EXPENSE Ms. Deen. It is quite the reverse. As a Southerner I view her as a pariah. She's part of the reason so many continue to view much of the South as a backwards place, full of fat, lazy slobs with lard-eating grins permanently plastered on their jowly faces. I tried to embrace her back in the beginning. But one trip to lady & Sons in Savannah ended that. the food was horrific, dripping with oil and fat, not tasty, not Southern at all, just disgusting.
Who are you calling a lazy fat slob. Go screw yourself.
Paula herself admits that she rarely ever eats any of the dishes on her TV show or she would be as big as a table. I checked with an R.N. who has seen plenty of different types of diabetic cases and she assures me that the longer you live the more likely you are to develop diabetes as part of the usual process of aging. She also told me that a good many cases are handled by diet which is cheaper than forking out $$ for medicine and often a lot more efficient. My mother was one of those who developed full blown diabetes in her golden years and she used diet and took a pill. As for the rest of us, get this: those of us who have not been diagnosed as diabetic are considered pre-diabetic! Now is that good medicine or just plain damn arrogance on behalf of Big Pharma?
What a bunch of crap. Pre-diabetes is actually based on elevated blood glucose levels. it is very specific. The levels are elevated but not to the point of actual diabetes diagnosis. And the majority of us do not fall into that category. We are not all pre-diabetic. Your RN needs a refresher. And while age is a risk factor, diabetes is in no way a normal part of aging. The reason it increases with age is because we become more sedentary and we gain weight (but not all of us).
So she's partnering with a drug co? She's gonna make money off this?
That's not right.
Why? Because you didn't think of it first?
This is what is wrong with obese America: eat garbage food (high fat, sugar, processing) and then try to fix the ensuing health problem with drugs. How about just eating right to start off with and watch your health improve?! Paula could have reversed her diabetes with diet and lifestyle changes but now she's just another drug pusher for those too lazy to put down the twinkies and get out of the damn lazyboy! Poor poor example Paula.

Perhaps you should learn the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes!
Absolutely no disincentive to eat in the Paula Deen mode. We are borrowing from our kids and grand kids to pay for everyone's unhealthy choices. Or we remove people's freedom to eat and drink as they wish and be governed by people who come out of northeastern schools who are so much smarter than the rest of us. Think hard about it people!
I'm not interested in my kids paying for her audience's healthcare.
Not surprising when her favorite cocktail is 1 part heavy cream, 1 part melted butter, and 1 part bacon fat.
I think she is hilarious.
She's never brought anything worthwhile "to the table." Do I have to add I mean that literally. Notice how her smile does not extendto the rest of her face. It stops with her mouth. Her eyes are not smiling. She's not real, she's playing a character, and a grotesque one at that. Yuck.
Yes, wish her the best with a new way to promote herself. Sorry, but I just don't like her.
don't apologize. she's scary.
Why do you watch her
The only reason she came out about it now is that she found a medicine that she can deep fry
Zing! Ha ha! Hilarious!
Who would've ever guessed cooking outlandish dishes in pure lard would hurt you!
actually she was just on with a doctor and the doctor says they don't know what causes type 2 diabetes.
Well, let me take a wild guess....seeing as how Type II diabetes is now epidemic in the U.S. as is obesity...and neither were 50 years ago...guess I can figure that 1 + 1 = 2...duh!
I agree with her that she's a cook, and not our doctor. She didn't eat fewer calories than she burned, and thus developed DMII. However, people can easily utilize her recipes occasionally without gaining weight, and thus avoiding diabetes.
Thin and healthy people can afford an occasional glazed donoughts with bacon and burgers sandwich....as a sometimes food.
The main problem is that she is taking an oral medication. People with diabetes are at extremely high risk for getting nerve damage and kidney damage, and unless her HbA1C is below 7.8% (unlikely), she should suck it up and inject insulin everyday, to minimize, or at least delay the complications of the disease, IMHmedical studentO.
Obesity does NOT cause Type II diabetes it is a symptom of Hyperinsulinemia. First you have a problem with insulin production–as it progresses you get obese, have problems with HBP and cholesterol and ultimately get diabetes Type II–but long before that kills you , you can just as easily die of another symptom of hyperinsulinemia–heart disease. All are linked to a poor diet with too many sweets, sugars and refined carbs–and skinny people get it too.
It is not hyperinsulinemia, but insulin resistance that causes diabetes. Hyperinsulinemia results when the body produces extra insulin to compensate for insulins diminished effects. More directly, it is the excess glucose that directly causes multi-organ damage in diabetes, mainly by destroying blood vessels, and this associated with elevated glycated hemoglobin.
However, while the pathophysiology of diabetes is indeed interesting, this is all overly academic, and perhaps "seeing the forest for the trees." According to the NIH, over 85% of people with diabetes are overweight or obese. People can talk about mechanisms and lifestyles till the cows come home, but the bottom line is that if you avoid becoming overweight (which means making sure calories in is less than or equal to calories out), you are much, much less likely to develop diabetes, and people should focus on that before they focus on all secondary causes.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA she deserves it, that swine
OH and the taxpayer likely will pick up the tab for all of the diabetics-in-the-making due to Deen's shows.
so deen is gonna cause a bunch of people to be diabetic? she is shoving the food down there throats or what?
Are you people not reading? MODERATION. She says that herself. As a frequent watcher of her cooking show and other segments on The Today Show, Oprah, Dr. Oz, etc. she talks about how eating some of her dishes needs to be done in moderation. She says here herself that people have to take responsibility for themselves. Every once in a while we all go for a piece of fried chicken, mashed potatoes & gravy, etc. My husband comes from a family history of diabetes. He has not yet been diagnosed with the disease himself and does not currently show any danger signs. But several other family members have the disease, not direclty related to the way they eat, but genetics. Paula has confirmed that she and her husband eat lots of salads and other healthy meals. She exercises frequently as well. There may be a slight bit of some of her eating choices as part of the problem, but there are other factors too. Occasionally, we all eat bad or make a bad meal choice, whether that is because we are eating on the run or just trying to satisfy a craving.
Puhleeeesseee...she did this to herself...she's known for 3 yrs and hasn't changed a bit. Look what she promoted...and now she'll promote the anti dote..and make more money for the drug companies.
IF I'm not mistaken, she did "come out" not long ago w/Dr. Oz on his show. If anyone watches the cooking channel or the foodnetwork I believe they would know that her son, Bobby I think, has his own show now called something like "it's not my mama's cooking". He turns Paula's dishes/sweets into a more healthful one, and I've seen her on there. Now, would anyone please get me her recipe for the Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding? Also, the only thing that she irritates me with her that exagerrated accent that she likes to throw around, that drives me nuts!
"Genetics" All too often people cite that to excuse their own behavior and actions. The fact is ANYTHING becomes genetic if practiced long enough and living organisms also EVOLVE beyond conditions when they stop practicing them. If people stopped eating that way, they not only would prevent the disease within themselves (Type II Diabetes is a CUMULATIVE illness that is a result of years of bodily abuse and bad eating) they also would begin to change their genetics.
On a microscopic level, your genetics CHANGE every single day–based on what you do or do not do and what you are exposed to. To rely or defend behavior based on that is bogus. You show me anyone from a genetically predisposed family with Type II diabetes and I'll show you how diet can make them the exception to the rule. this is true for hbp and heart disease also-I know. All of my immediate family have these kinds of health problems except for myself and one brother and the reason we are different? We have a different lifestyle where we try to limit high and processed carbs and sodas etc and where weight management and minimizing the use of simple sugars is held to a MINIMUM–the result is we don't have the issues the other siblings have–and which according to science is what has run in my family for generations (heart disease, hbp , obesity and diabetes type II) Not a fluke–vigilance and a focus on CHANGING the legacy.
I think she admitted to being a heavy smoker to Dr. Oz, but don't remember her revealing she has diabetes too. Need to look up that episode w/Dr. Oz though

Genetics can be changed–it is too easy an excuse–Any bad or good physiological habit done long enough will become genetic and can also be mitigated by NOT eating the wrong things–no excuses for either what she promotes or for now, promoting a drug to fight what she caused in the first place.
I don't think you understand how genetics work.
Having taken 3 courses in genetics at University, I believe I do–I think YOU do not understand not only how genetics work but also how over time, evolution works.
Wow, aren't you a bit obsessive?
No surprise because of what she cooks BUT why judge her because of what she cooks. i am sure there is not one person in this entire world who does not do SOMETHING that affects their health in some kind of negative way. I LOVE her cooking shows. It is my choice if I want to watch it and eat fried greasy foods! If people don't like it they can change the channel. She did it to herself. Now she is dealing with it. Her choice. her life.
@Robin- I am SURE you are the healthiest person in the world who is Holier than thou!
I can't explain why, but this woman always gives me the creeps. Whenever I'm in the checkout line, and glance at the magazine covers – I see her face and it just makes me cringe for some reason. It's like she wants to eat me or something.
Are you made of butter? If not, you should be fine.
now that's funny! She does love her butter doesn't she?
The "Barefoot Contessa" (Ina Garten) also cooks with alot of real butter, but for some reason, no one is complaining about her. I love both of their shows–to watch–but I know that to make their way of cooking a lifestyle would not only kill any normal person but also would bankrupt them.
I think its supposed to be Novo Nordisk, not Novartis...way to fact check CNN... No advertising dollars for you!
"Butter ya'll!" Southern cooking will kill ya. All that sugar and corn based products.
Wish her the best, but why is this news ? Who gives ?
It's news because she and her approach to cuisine are a big part of the obesity epidemic in our country, and it's doubly newsworthy since she now has the very health consequence most closely associated with this epidemic. Diabetes costs Americans hundreds of billions of dollars a year.
t goes back to ethics, does society have the responsibility to take care of people who do damage to themselves? There are children born with Type I Diabetes of no fault of their own. I do not have a problem supporting these innocent victims of genetics. But, fat dumb idiots who force down the worse possible food combination and then they get diabetes and we are supposed to pay for their bill. I dont think so. But it does not matter what i think because it will never end. this madness will be a staple of america and there is nothing anyone can do about it.
If you are so willing to throw your hands up and say there is nothing anyone can do about it, you disqualify yourself as being knowledgeable about ethics.
While I can't speak for Paula Dean, I can attest that not everyone who takes Victoza has Type II diabetes. It is used to treat hormonal disorders as well, as insulin is a hormone. I take Victoza daily; I am not and never have been overweight, don't have a "poor" diet, am not "inactive". I have not been diagnosed with elevated glucose levels nor do I have diabetes. My AC1 is checked regularly and it is consistently normal. However, there is a genetic predisposition for me to develop Type II overtime as my cells do not absorb insulin properly and are in fact desensitized to absorption. It's called Metabolic Syndrome. It's been this way since I was born. There are people out there who are "innocent victims" as you call them of Type II diabetes; not everyone is some irresponsible fat pig causing health insurance costs to rise because they take Victoza, as your comments portray. Tell it to my racquet ball partner.
Honestly I wish her the best, but who gives s hoot.
Epic fail, toolbag.
