While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday.

Today celebrates a different kind of piety - December 1 is National Pie Day!

Is there a more fabulously festive way to kickstart December, THE month of holiday baking, than indulging in pie all day long? We think not, so strap on your apron and get bakin'!

Pie originally came to be out of necessity. During ancient times, soldiers and travelers needed a safe, easy way to transport enough food to sustain them for long periods of time without worrying about it spoiling. Wrapping meat, cheeses or even a honey filling in an early form of pastry, made using flour, water and fat, proved a handy way to get their meals on the run.

From the Medieval days all the way up to the pioneers of America, cooking both savory and sweet pies became an inexpensive and tasty way to enjoy an oven-fired meal.

And who doesn't love an edible crust? Pies live and die by their casing.

Do you like a filled pie with a crust on the bottom, a top-crust pie with only filling underneath or, the king of pies, the two-crust that completely encloses all that tasty filling between layers of luscious dough? And don't get us started on the pastry, although flaky is hard to beat.

So today, serve yourself a slice or two or three of your favorite pies. You can stay old-time traditional with a hearty meat pie, bite into a bit of comfort with a pot pie or heap a scoop of ice cream on top of chess pie. Going a little pie crazy and not sure where to start? Dive in to this pie primer.

Americans are fat because portion size is out of control in the USA.

And Americans embrace a sedentary life style.

      BINGO – you are FAT!

You're obviously incapable of appreciating good pie, Jerome. You're like a tone-deaf music critic.

Agreed, it has to be either March 14, or the 3rd of the 14th month, depending on how you write dates. :->

March 14 is national Pi day...there's a difference. In 9th grade, my son had to be in a picture eating a piece of pie with the day's paper in hand and visible. He also had to recite pi to 20 decimals from memory. For all of this, he got two 100s. I don't think he minded the assignment, especially the pie eating part!!!

The big celebration for pi day could be March 14, 2015 unless you round up. Then it would be March 14, 2016.
