Do you dine on swine? Are you a dork for pork? You might want to hold off on pigging out.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today that a Pennsylvania firm has recalled approximately 5,550 pounds of pureed pork products that may contain foreign materials. The problem was brought to light after two consumers reported finding small metal fragments in meat purchased in 4.5-lb. boxes of Imperial Sysco "Puree Shaped Meats Country Style Pork and Binder Product."

The producer, K. Heeps, Inc. of Allentown, Pennsylvania, has received no reports of illness or injury following the discovery, and believe that metal pieces may have "broken off of the blending equipment during clean up and reassembly at the plant and subsequently entered the product," according to the FSIS press release.

The release goes on to note that, "Each box bears 'EST. 9379' inside the USDA mark of inspection and a production code of 06/16/11. The pureed pork products were produced on June 16, 2011, and shipped to California, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, and Virginia for institutional use. "

The company encourages consumers with specific questions to contact Quality Assurance Manager, David Pychinka, at (610) 530-5564 and many general food safety queries can be answered via the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov.

in the old testament it is clear that it is unclean to eat or touch the carcass of the swine. And the lord means what he says. Your body is a temple and you are what you eat if you eat trash and what does that make u ?

so what is the problem here .. is the metal rusted ? I bet the recall was because the meat was tainted, mostly metal story was fabricated.... Or now we have to see the quality of metal being used for pureeing ... ah .. look at the documentaries and you will know that american is run by corporations ...

I was a little surprised that the label was "Sysco" food because Sysco Foods are primarily distributed to restaurants. Restaurants usually have the best of the food because they get first pick of the crops and meats. Sure hope no of this junk ends up in baby foods.

Who is in charge of the government regulators? Oh wait.... it can't be Obama. It must be Bush's fault, since Obama's failures can't be blamed on him!!!!

In response to this, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney has announced that President Obama will personally inspect all Puree Shaped Meats Country Style Pork and Binder Product destined for US consumption. Right wing Obama haters are redefining "The Buck Stops Here" down to a ridiculous level. I got a rotten "Product of the USA" watermelon at Costco. Is it Obama's fault, since he technically controls the Department of Agriculture?

Barack Obama is the President of the United States, not a meat product checker. Bush failed the country and world miserably. Get over it!

    • marjee

The same regulations that the Bush Administration had are still in effect. Bush administration cut a lot of regulations whether you are happy with that or not. And YOUR republican butts in congress especially Michelle Bachmann want to drop what regulations we have left. A bill to assign more regulations (and you can check on line and you will find out about it) was dropped because the republicans in the senate blocked it and then wouldn't let it come to the floor of the senate to be voted on. You little ha ha ho ho about President Obama is a bunch of cow pukie.

No realistic person thinks Obama or Bush has any control over meat inspectors. Give me a break. Take a moment and think how many links down the chain of command the inspectors are. There is no way the government is able to manage them properly.

So the Republicans must have defunded the FDA – because as you can see – we don't need any regulations on the food we eat, tne medicines we take, or the water we drink. We can just trust those Republicans to do what is best – yea right – talk about death panels- the Republican Party policy for the middle class and the poor.

    • Dsemenar

Most republicans want much smaller govt, not no govt. Less regulation for businesses, not the food industry though. Aren't the FDA, Big Pharma and Repubs all in bed together? That's what I usually hear from democrats...

That was over three months ago. They wait till you eat it and then "recall" it. Regulators admit that less than 5% of "recalled" food is actually recalled.

"for institutional use'... great, someones loved one in a nursing home or your child at school is getting a pork rib shaped into a form.. read the ingredients. What a disgusting product. Why is any manufacturer even allowed to make a product full of preservatives, tapioca, etc, and still allowed to call it meat. And, may have metal parts.... how could you not know?

Sad on so many different levels.

    September 27, 2011 at 11:08 pm |
  16. phyfusion

Actually, the FSIS Inspectors do not inspect the product per se; they do however review the facility's Food Safety; SQF; and SSOP records to verify the plant is following their written procedures; and if issues arise that could present a food safety hazzard, then the proper and effective corrective action must be initiated and documented. The FSIS Inspectors do however inspect each carcass for cancer and other diseases during the eviseration process. Bon appetit...

FACT1: Mono-gastric animals digest food material very quickly if there is anything wrong wit it.

FACT2: Poor digestive capabilities increase the body's toxic load.

FACT3: Pigs excrete (poop/pee) four times as much as humans.

FACT4: Pigs are scavengers/omnivores who will literally eat anything that is physically digestible.

FACT5: Urine, Poop, and Vomit are present in abundance at pig farms, along with the occasional stillborn fetus, which is eaten immediately.

You forgot to mention that most physical processes in the human body are inherently disgusting if presented in a disgusting way, too.

Worry less about things like pee and poop and more about things like actual toxins and you will live longer.

Krystin, in the factory farm, a pig (actually sow) would not have access to a stillborn fetus. Breeding sows are kept in farrowing cages that prohibit her from turning around to have contact with her babies. Sows give birth, then the piglets make their way to the mother's teats...or not. The dead or dying babies are tossed into rubbish bins - often still alive. Even if the sow could devour her young, she is not a food animal. The sows are literally bred to death.

speaking of "Pee" and "Poo", many many jurisdictions allow the use the solid waste from municipal waste plants – some big cities – as fertilizer for vegetable farms. Just think of what goes down the toilet, and enjoy those fresh grown vegetables ;-)

Once again a case of the "Haves" and the "Have Nots". I have a connection at a small farm who provides me animal flesh where I've actually met the animal and have participated in its breeding selection, birth, growth and slaughter. The rest of you who shop random animal parts from unknown "farms" deserve what you get. Aspire for more and maybe, just maybe, there won't be feces and metal in your meat.

    September 27, 2011 at 10:55 pm |

I would rather spend my time doing other pursuits than raise and kill animals. I have no objection to your doing it, nor do I find it demeaning or awful. But I imagine you would rather somebody else make your medicines and build your cars, right? Why do you then berate us for our choice to do an occupation you avoid?

And why exactly are any of you purchasing pork, imported from foreign countries? Start buying American, pigs are no wear near metal, or steel, unless they are rubbing against those oilers that are well over a hundred years old. Say no to all foreigners, say yes to American. Say no to obama, say yes to American. Say no to islam, say yes to American. Learn those three things, and you all will go far.

    September 27, 2011 at 9:42 pm |

You fail at the English Language. The meat was from PA. It contained foreign metal pieces....... In simple terms, there was something in there that didn't belong. You're a prime example of what's wrong with America.

Snarks, the meat was from Pennsylvania, and the last time I checked, that is still part of the United States, as well as being one of the original 13 Colonies. It was then distributed from Houston, Texas.. and Texas may or may not be part of the USA, depending on what Rick Perry says. The pigs were fine in Pennsylvania.. Houston may have had a problem.
Blaming Muslims who dont even eat pig is idiotic. Blaming Obama is even worse. If you want more events like this, then yes, please stop funding the FDA, the EPA and others that are looking out for the environment and food safety. You will only have yourself to blame. Better yet, why dont you move to Texas, and for all our sakes, just Leave the Union!! We definitely dont need another porker from Texas Bushlands messing up this country.

Only islam teaches such nonsense. If you want to visit the old testament, better listen to how your lord says "kill all of those who believe not in what I Teach". Not verbatim, but there are a hundred verses just like it; which is why islam is such a nasty, nasty religion. They still practice archaic teachings. Learn, evolve, thank me later, or tonight.

That is exactly what Yahweh/ Jehovah does in the Old Testament...over and over again. Its also what the Christians have done for the last 2000 years. They killed all those who did not believe in their system. Again, Get An Education...in a University, and not from the 700 Club.
Did you know that Yahweh/ Jehovah is the SAME god as the one for the Muslims? The first 5 books of the Old Testament are the same. The big split happened when Abraham took one of his sons to be sacrificed to God cuz God asked him to. The split was over WHICH of the two sons it was... Abraham had 2 wives. So for the last 2000 years, JudeoChristaniMuslims have been killing each other over this ridiculous bullShlt

While a few metal bits in the meat aren't some huge disaster, I would seriously question any large scale food processing facility that does not have metal detectors on the production lines to screen for such relatively common issues. You don't hear of many cases like this because most facilities make that modest investment.

    September 27, 2011 at 8:57 pm |
    • Dozer

BS – apparently, you've never worked at a slaughterhouse. Every USDA-inspected slaughterhouse has metal detectors to check finished product. That does not mean that they always work, and fragmented metal bits may become introduced to finished product after the metal detector processing point.

Thanks to politics, natural selection is not allowed to take hold. So now we've got handicapped people and politics holding the human race back. How are we as a species supposed to survive if we're constantly carrying the weak and elderly around? Regulations in the end, will be the demise of the human race. Only the strong are supposed to survive, not all of these vericose-veined old people and the downs folks. We are instead promoting mediocrity and breeding weaklings.

Get rid of the regulations and let natural selection weed these weak people out. I'm so sick of catering to those that can't care for themselves. Let them rot I say. ROT.

Those of us that have worked for The Obama Administration are trying our Best to do as you say.

So... about the illegals OOOOOh that's right, democrats like them. Say, if natural selection were allowed to occur, how'd your fearless leader ever make it to adulthood? He sure is a hard-liner! Takes a stand for all kinds of things!

        God bless or whatever.

You sound like such a sad, angry young man. I pity you. Don't have any grandparents to honor and love? Are your parents still too young to throw out with the garbage? So Sad.........

Trystan, the very essence of humanity is that human beings have many ways to be valuable and worthy of survival other than physical strength and optimal health - even things other than mental prowess. I'd say that, if strength and health are all you have going for YOU, then we should start the weeding-out process with your sorry a**.

So, Trystan,....been to the super market lately?? Or, do you pop out of bed to feed your own pigs and chickens, weed the vegetable garden, shoot a couple of moose and can your own food all before breakfast?
Or, maybe you just like McDonald's Egg McMuffins made with all the products Sysco ships to fast food restaurants.

Just some advice from a 'more' mature person. Eating too many french fries gives you acne.

Your callousness about handicapped people is disgusting. Lord help you for putting that kind of bad karma on yourself. Handicapped people can be born or result from injuries in any family, including yours.

Trystan, this isnt a case of natural selection. Please get an education.
As far as 'illegals' go.... I dont believe that any of your ancestors asked the Native Americans who actually were already here for 'permission to settle'. They just did it. Others coming in now to take over..? Thats called Karma. Reap what you Sow baby...get used to it. Your kids will likely end up marrying Mexicans. CYA! THAT would be called Natural Selection. :)
