Pssst! Got a sec to chat? We are utterly thrilled when readers want to hang out and talk – whether it's amongst themselves or in response to pieces we've posted. We want Eatocracy to be a cozy, spirited online home for those who find their way here. Consider the daily Coffee Klatsch post as your VIP lounge – the primary comments thread for readers who'd like to chat about topics not related to the articles we're running. That way, everyone knows where to find each other, and each post's comments section remains on topic. |

I keep casting the line and no bites :(
Jeann cracks me up
Standard & Poors has just downgraded the east coast earthquake to "just kind of a big rumble"...
You may now return to your regularly scheduled eatocracy...
Aw man. I had money on that.
You are totally not me!
Funny though :)
it's RH
i have a new appetizer for everyone to try!! i went to a gathering at a fancy schmancy country club a while back and had something scrumptious! after demanding (actually i just smiled a whole lot & tossed the blonde hair while blinking the blue eyes...) that the caterer come out and talk to me i got the info!
do this: get some pistachios, crack the nuts (dont eat them all!!), and chop the nut meat up. you'll want to have about 3/4 c to a c chopped nuts. i have one of those choppers, works perfect! get some goat cheese. a small block will do. let it warm up. add the cheese to the pistachios and mix it all up into a soft paste. then you take red grapes, and roll them in the paste to coat them so they look like white/green balls. chill for a few hours, and MUNCH! manna from heaven i tell you!!!
Holy crap that sounds good...
they are SO good! especially a bottle of crisp white wine. :)
Wow! I've gotten quite an education today: earthquakes, Mega-Towers and bourbon. Cool. I'm off to check into getting a new gasket for my truck bed's hard cover. Nite all!
Okay all, a Mega-Block tower building challenge has been issued and I must respond. Thing 1 is going down! Stay upright! Toodles!
Wait! I don't have children! What are you saying?
Thing 1 (QOE's Oldest son) has challenged Mom to see who could build the biggest tower out of blocks. Fun will be had and memories to be cherished for years.
Oh. Thank you. A mom who actually plays with her children. What a fun mom!
I have two spent two earthquakes in a stair well. The good: if the building goes down higher chance of surviving The bad: when the building is swaying it's very hard to remain upright.
got home with little issue, boy works two miles east of my office and even though he left 20min before me he still isn't home. Location Location Location
And now the extra crappy DC traffic starts early....thank's mother nature!
@Kat – Glad to hear everyone is ok!
Looks like I got on/off all the fun roads before all the fun hit, so I am home while the boy is still stuck in traffic :-)
I'm contemplating whether or not to stay at work later to avoid all of it...Probably not :)
My brother is working in Buffalo this week and my mother called his to see if he was okay (in her mind, Buffalo and VA are apparently thisclose). Anyhoo, his reply was "Why, are we being invaded by Canada?"
Good golly, I leave for a bit and everyone starts having earthquakes! I'm sure Indiana will be the next to go on the rollercoaster.
Since we are on a musical bent here...
Pic above seems kind of appropriate now, huh? We're fine. I felt it, but Sarah somehow missed the whole thing!
You could feel it in New York? (Or are you elsewhere and I'll feel stupid for not knowing this?)
I felt it in Albany, which is a couple of hours north of NYC.
She was eating her Capt Crunch cereal,so no worries.
Yeah, we got word from an associate of ours up in Pennsylvania. They didn't really notice anything until they went to the water cooler where everyone was talking about it.
Just talked to my sister and she felt part of the quake even up in her neck of the woods, in Patterson, NY.
I AM FUNNY!
Why yes, yes you are.
Aren't you a little young to be building your own homemade seismograph?
Well played sir!
Greetings from the 97th annual International Association of Industrial Accidents and Boards conference. Don't be too jealous.
I'm not jealous 'cuz I just cut the cheese. :)))
You both doing ok after the quake? I read they evacuated part of New York?!?
holey smokes! i havent heard of an earthquake up north there in years.. last time i remember one was when i was in grade school in Akron, OH and we had to climb under our desks while the world shook. hope everyone is OK! didnt feel anything here fr the one in Colorado. stay safe everyone!!

BTW if you follow the link to the USGS site there is a link there where, if you felt the EQ, you can describe what it felt like to you to the geologists (sloppy sentence structure, sorry). (Inquiring minds want to know......)
Wow. That's a big one.
THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!!!!!
Haha. Nice.
President Obama will be making a statement shortly, Then ALL HELL WILL BREAK LOOSE. It's the End of Days...Hahahaha!
Here is his statement. "We just had an earthquake. Now leave me alone."
We just totally had an earthquake!
Or at least our building was shaking quite a bit.
So did we dude! Holy crap!
It was a 5.8
Here's what really happened:
http://www.theonion.com/articles/planet-earth-doesnt-know-how-to-make-it-any-cleare,20639/
5.8? That's a pretty strong quake. I'm looking out the window and I haven't seen this many people flooding out of offices in Richmond, ever. If the buildings start crumbling down, how do you out run that? Truth, something to think about, though. One way or another, mother nature will balance things back out.
USGS says 5.9 a really big one for your neck of the woods. Film at 6!
Yeah, they just evacuated the pentagon and the capitol. Our office in Bethesda too. I gotta go...i'm going to get the "I made it through the Quake of '11" t-shirt that they are already selling in DC :)
Whoa! Is everyone ok?
It's being reported as a 5.
And there was one in CO.
Spooky.
I'm good :)
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Maps/US2/37.39.-79.-77.php
Good. I'm glad you're ok. That's the same site I went to to find out it was a 5. The down side is I don't have any first-hand knowledge as to what a level 5 quake means. I've experienced hurricanes, thunderstorms (sometimes worse than hurricanes) and the like. I've never experienced an earthquake.
This was my first. Wasn't really anything to write home about. Everything shook for a couple of seconds. That's it.
That sucks. Your first one should be special ... oh, we're talking about quakes. My bad – never mind.
Enjoy your evacuation. LOL
LOL....I didn't get evacuated. I work at another office :) And I at least wanted to see a fire hydrant explode or something :(
My office building swayed a bit, so a number of us went outside, but it was not an official evacuation. (Albany, NY)
attendance update: i will be out of the office this thurs and fri. i have a funeral to go to thursday, and i am volunteering on friday. wanted to give the QOE a heads up so she doesnt dock me points. :)
We'll keep an eye out for you and keep your chin up.
Positive thoughts and many e-hugs to you and the family of your friend's friend.
Salute for Truth and myself Please.Take care.
Hello my friends. The wine tours went nicely. I brought some Merlot and Pinot Noir as promised, but also a nice chocolate dessert wine, and a couple of others. Feel free to enjoy them. The souvenir glasses are a nice addition to my collection as well.
I decided an extra vacation day was in order yesterday as well.
Anything exciting happen I should know about?
Sounds like you had a great time, I am glad :) you were missed yesterday.
I was missed? Did you need me to make an impromptu speech to an insensitive poster? :)
No, I just missed my daily does of EG and as a minion in training want to get all the exposure possible before the "final Test" whenever that may be,....oh and because I wanted to hear if any of the minions acted up :)
Thank you Mr. Grin! That was mighty thoughee of you! What do I owe you? A free round trip thru the dungeon of delights perhaps?
Or would you prefer cash? :D
It's a gift. No debt owed.
You may have an evil grin, but you also have a heart of gold. Thank you! ))))HUGS((((
I'm back! Arts and crafts time is over and our masterpieces are drying on the buffet. Now on to lunch! On the menu today is mini meatball subs, mandarin orange slices and apple juice or milk. Get your order in now, people!
I'll take 2 Subs please, but only if they were made with your patented palm rolling technique.
Haha! I'm in too.
I would never serve balls rolled by anyone else. :)
From the little bit I've read it seems that your "so much glitter" lady's name is Tania Gunadi.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1040208/#Actress
She's actually been in a lot of things.
One inconsistency though...Fractions are not taught in second grade normally. Fractions are an abstract concept and second graders are still at a very concrete level. Were she my teacher though, I probably would not have minded calculus...;D
Who drank all the coffee? I'm a little tired as I've been doing the Super Bowl Shuffle in hopes of erasing last nights terrible game. To be honest,I started crying after the kickoff and I'm not making excuses but,
1. Coach Lovie Smith....I ain't feeling NO Love on this team.
2. Jay Cutler...Where did they get this LOSER? Probably from Denver. Good move Broncos.
3. Marion " I need a " Barber. LOSER. Dallas Cowboy ex. cut for good reason.
3. Roy " I need more practice " Williams. No wonder Dallas cut this guy–he had three years of practice with them and still drops the ball–LOSER.
This team SUCKS worse than The CUBS. If you see your Brother Richard Head,He owes you $ 5.00 and a case of beer.
Can I have your autograph Mr. McMahon,if you still remember how to write? I will put it next to my Mike Ditka one,the second BEST Coach behind The Great Tom Landry.
@jerv – yeah, the fiance lost his job just over a month ago.
I was just wondering how the job hunt has been going?
Howdy, boys and girls! I see we are still going up side down around here. But it's a topsy turvy world anyway, why should we be different? Cheerios!
good morning~ fresh cut cantaloupe and watermelon for breakfast today. dig in!
Morning! I will add in some fresh peaches for the mid morning snack, have 2 cases just off the truck from WA 24 hours ago.
Good morning klatsch! How is everyo–
...CRESCENT ROLLS AND BROWN SUGAR OATMEAL?!
WTH? LOL!
Top of the morning all!
so do you have your canoe ready for the "great flood" that is apparently heading our way?
Nope. I really need to check the news....
Nah, it's too (TWO?) depressing.
All the news & weather that's fit to post! Right here in the Klatsch!
Good Morning everybody! I hope those that need rain get rain. I have my umbrella today so its all good. Bring it Mother Nature.
Good morning M'am, and a well played game last night. My apologies for the NY beatdown. I think they should have downplayed it some. It is still preseason. Take it easy guys.
Earthquake near you? Did it wake you?
The quake hit way in the south part of the state. Did not feel anything in Denver, though all of the news channels are making a huge deal out of it. Apparently was strong enough to knock things off of shelves though.
Morning all, cheddar brats and french toast for breakfast, dig in.
That sounds like something we were talking about earlier: having brats, uh, I mean children. HA!
How's things in the mountains, Mountain Man?
Things are busy, that is for sure. Wilfire season has begun, have 3 good ones going right now, one west of here that is smoking in the valley. otherwise, I am preparing myself for the best time of the year, Fall, archery season for elk, deer, and bear starts in less than 2 weeks!
Good morning all. I'll share my tea from Wales this morning. :)
Hello Mil. Did you mention one time that your significant other lost his job?
Good morning all! The boys and I sitting down to breakfast. I've got maple brown sugar oatmeal if anyone is interested.
Sounds good...So what is on the agenda for the day?
After I get a little more energy, we're going to make a run to WallyWorld to get some arts and crafts supplies. Specifically, foam animal masks that we can decorate.
Well, don't forget pretzel sticks, glue sticks, tape (that sticks) and glitter, so much glitter...
Sounds like a whole lot of fun! Gonna go get some word done now. Imagine that?
You really like the Target teacher, don't you? :D
Good morning all...How is everyone doing today?
Wonderful weather here in VA and gonna be a busy day. Folks are already freaking out about the hurricane.
I am sure...seems that people use most any reason to freak out. I am sure that your area could use the rain though. Hopefully this season one of these blows through RichHead's hood.
@truth is absolutely right. Some people need something to freak about to live, it seems.
I love mornings like this, its a little chilly- not cold enough for a jacket, but not sweating ur azz off. It just means Fall is around the corner!
I second that! Just came back for a walk and a lotto ticket. Not to worry Truth, I do lotto maybe once a month.
I concur, that fall is my absolute favorite time of year.
Best with Lotto...If you hit it (so to speak), don't spend it all in one place....Makes me think of the movie "It Could Happen To You" where Cage tells his partner "Someone called me at 3 in the morning saying that if I didn't give him money, that he would kill himself" and his partner says "Anyone calls me at that hour, I would tell him to do it"...
Is the movie "It Could Happen To You" worth a .99 cent rental at Redbox? I think it would be cool to win enough to pay off my house and be debt free for the first time since I was a teenager.
.99 cents? yeah- It has Nick Cage, Rosie Perez and Bridget Fonda
Yeah, they came out with these new fangled kiosks call Redbox and you can rent a movie for a day for only 99 cents. Since it is an older movie I suspect I would most likely find it at the local used video store.
LOL, I know what Red box is, we have those and Blockbuster Kiosks, but ours are $1.06 a night. I was (poorly) saying was yeah, for .99 cents its totally worth it :)
Actually it is worth the price of owning, if for no otehr reason the scene where Bridget Fonda is in a sports bra...
Hurricane?!?!
Yup, Irene. The b!otch is up to 100mph and can't make up her mind if she's going to hit Florida, S.Carolina or head farther up the Eastern Seaboard.
"Hurricane" is Spanish for "wait 'n' see"
Good morning! 15 day countdown until my B-Day. Now if I can just get my mom to remind me that as of that date I'll be the oldest unwed woman in my family...EVER. Lovely...
In better news I have some sourdough biscuits for everyone :-D
Good morning and thanks for the biscuits. Sourdough eh? Interesting. ;) Sorry my math sux this morning. Would that mean your birth date is 9/6? Are you also the happiest person in your family? HA!
Ha! I bet she is the happiest camper in her family.
I wouldn't doubt that for a minute. [:-D
Are you a newbie here or one of us with a different screen name?
I am rather happy, I was engaged and the best decision I made was to call it off. However my mom sees this as a failure, especially since she "always expected to have grandchildren by this stage in life." I just tell her she does have grandkids, they just happen to have 4-legs and wet noses :-)
My special date is the 7th, and if I remember correctly I'm followed closely by two other Virgos
I got the recipe from Miss Paula Deen, and subbed out the lard for smart balance spread so that I have a chance to reach my birthday.
Expectations of mothers can be such a ..... mother. ;) I feel ya there.
Got you logged in on 9/7, fellow Virgo! Rich is the only other one of us I know about. He's going to be almost to retirement age this year! <=]
I think Matt is Jerv.
Yeah, the pressure that families can put on you to comply with their wishes can be unbearable. I just got to the point where I would tell folks to eff off and mind their own business. Yup just like that and better off for it. Now, who is this guy named Matt?
Groan, I hear ya about the Grandchildren thing, the hub's parents are relentless. Is it so wrong that I enjoy my Martinis and Sleeping in? It'll Happen when we are ready for it. Jeez
Matt is one of us who is playing games ;)
or
someone who is unhappily married
or
someone who was unhappily married
Any time I hear my maternal unit use the phrase "I expect ...", grrrrr. Late in life, I learned to ignore her expectations and do what I know is right for me. I wasn't put on this Earth to live up to her expectations. Just wish I had realized that sooner. ;)
/end rant/
My personal favorite is "it better be a boy! I already have enough grand daughters!" UM EXCUSE ME???? I told the hubs straight up if when we do finally call to say we are expecting and she says that to me I am hanging up the phone on her.
It's a shame they can't cut the cord and realize it's not their life anymore. They had their chance. Time to suck it up and move on. I'm sorry she's being so unreasonable and demanding to you. If she does ever pull that kind of crap, I'll stand behind your phone disconnect 100%.
Thankfully the hubs agrees too. She also insisted the only proper way to get married was in a church with a priest (and she wanted to meet him before the wedding to make sure he liked him) and went ON and ON, until I looked her dead in the eye and said "Tell me again, about the time you and hub's dad got married on the steps of city hall?" and she shut up real quick and didn't speak to me for a week lol
Luckily my mom doesn't care so much about the wedding, in fact she encourages elopement since that means there is no risk of her needing to spend ANY money. My boyfriend has basically learned that once I hang up with my mom it's best to just hand me a puppy (or chocolate) and walk away.
Good morning and Happy Tuesday everybodeee! I used to live on those Taco Bell taco salads. It's how I learned that salsa is a great dressing.
Coffee's brewing. There are crescent rolls & strawberry preserves for all. Enjoy!
Morning AleeD and everyone. Crescent rolls and strawberry preserves sounds great! On the way to work I heard a radio commercial for "snot green kleenexes." No lie.
eww
What was the selling point? So you can't tell when it's been used? Recycle it!
Now that's SOME kind of green living. Ewww! LOL!
Haha! It had something to do with a little kid battling the "snotter monster" or something like that. Really bizaare commercial.
