Our commenters are on a bit of a roll.

Last week, our colleague Jo Parker extolled the virtues of her childhood sandwich favorite the peanut butter and Vidalia onions sandwich. She wrote in part, "The cool, crunchy sweetness of Vidalias pairs terrifically with the peanuttiness. Smooth or crunchy – up to you. I remember eating these as a girl in Illinois, but I really don’t know the sandwich’s pedigree."

In response, more than 200 readers served up love letters to their favorite non-traditional ‘wiches. They ranged from strawberry preserves paired with mayonnaise to peanut butter and…well, everything under the sun, stackable between two buns.

The many layers of onion love

I've got a couple that are great. Don't laugh until you try them! Sardines mixed with mustard, mayo (mix these three together to form a spread) and sliced raw onions on whole wheat. Also try sautéed liver with grilled onions, maple syrup and hot sauce on whole wheat. One of the best there is! - Redpearl

My grandpa goes one up on the PB and onion. His is peanut butter, onion and yellow mustard. I can’t eat onions but I do love me some PB and mustard sandwiches! - Tamra

I also enjoy PB & bologna & onion. - Julie

In a pickle!

Peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches on toasted bread are fantastic! They kind of remind me of Thai peanut dipping sauce paired with spring rolls. - Karl

Peanut butter, dill pickles & mayonnaise. My dad used to eat it when he was a kid and we love it too. My mom despises it. - Mrs Marvel

Peanut butter, mustard, and sweet pickle relish on toast, or wheat bread. - Pattigee

My best friend got pregnant in high school and I always had to try food with her. My favorite concoction was definitely creamy peanut butter with dill pickle chips covering the entire peanut butter spread. - MsAttitude

Peanut butter and Branston Pickle. I guess you have to be English to know what that even is, but when I find a jar over here in Seattle, I am delighted! - Chandira

PB, pickles, and bacon on plain white bread. YUM! - Dave

Peanut butter and sweet pickles...the BEST sandwich ever! - Christy

No shame in the mayonnaise game

Another delight was mayonnaise and strawberry preserve sandwiches. - MsAttitude

White bread, bologna, mayo, plain potato chips. - A-man

I love peanut butter and mayonnaise. My mom used to make these and bring them out to us as a snack when working in the field as a kid. Mmmmmmm. Gonna go make one right now. - Tarvakion Dar

Peanut Butter, Lettuce & Mayonnaise sandwiches! Especially with nice crisp iceberg or romaine lettuce and either Kraft or Hellman's mayo (a different but equally enjoyable choice). My grandmother used to eat them and now they are my favorite, and the subject of a lot of teasing from the uninitiated... Gonna have to try adding bacon after reading all of these posts! - JackM

Long live the PBnO

I have been eating PB and onion for 45 years, mmmmmmm - jack

I have loved peanut butter and onion sandwiches since I was a child in the 60's! - BBB

Growing up on the west side of Cleveland, mom would take me to Bearden's Restaurant. They had the best peanut butter and onion hamburgers! I've tried to re-create the taste, but nothing comes close. - clevelander

Wow. I can't believe someone else eats the exact same thing that my father loved: peanut butter and onion sandwiches! As much as I love onion, I could never develop a taste for it myself and I always thought it was just him. - Josef Melton

Bean there, ate that

Also peanut butter and jelly with bologna, cheese, mayo and baked beans. May the force be with you! - nrabill

Are you kidding, peanut butter and onion is the best, been eating them for years. I also like peanut butter and (believe it or not) baked beans and bacon, if I have any. Love It. - Bonboop

Refried beans spread on toast. Add onions and Miracle Whip. Poor man’s sandwich. The beans replace meat. - MaMarie

Pork and bean sandwiches: take a slice of bread and spread on drained pork and beans, cover with a slice of American cheese and two strips of bacon crossed over the top. Salt and pepper, then toast under the broiler until the cheese is melted and a little burned and bubbly. We had these a lot when I was a kid. Easy and cheap! - MomOf3

Much ado about Doritos

Peanut butter and jelly with Doritos - nrabill

First one not a sandwich but so good together! Doritos with a canned smoked oyster on top! YUM! This sandwich is to die for! English muffin (toast first) then place in the following order a slice of tomato, a slice of Swiss cheese, a dollop of mayo, sprinkle with dill and place in toaster oven until cheese is melted (have open-faced); YUM! - Ingrid

PBJ with Doritos on it, so crunchy! - lovemypbj

Peanut butter and dill pickles are an AWESOME duo! Love it! Especially with some good cheesy Doritos on the side! YUM! - tonia

Sounds fishy...

I'm a PB&B girl myself, but I remember this one sandwich from high school. Tuna fish, French onion dip, Kraft singles, brown mustard and corn chips on Mrs. Bairds white bread roared over a bunsen burner. We used to eat lunch in our science teacher's classroom. - Houstonian

Before I went vegetarian my favorite sandwich was a grilled blue cheese, anchovy and ketchup sandwich. Of course the house smelled for days! - Bob

Tuna salad & creamy Peter Pan peanut butter. Must be Peter Pan. - SpacedogFL

Growing up here in AK, I used to love a moose nose sandwich with my Uncle, he's full native Yupik. But a special treat was Mom's grilled cheese, seaweed and salmon – that takes me back! - Sourdough

I can make a sandwich out of anything when i'm hungry at night and don't want to wake anyone up by cooking! Sunflower seeds, green olives, butter, BBQ, cheese, and spices from the rack are frequent occurrences! Unfortunately, we don't keep a ton of stuff like that in our fridge or I would have tried so much more by now!

My four year old made dinner the other night: hummus, strawberry jam, and cucumber slices on whole wheat. It was pretty good.

When I had the chicken pox as a kid, banana and mayo on Wonder Bread was the only thing that didn't hurt when I ate it. Sweet and salty and slid right down.

Toasted rye bread, smeared with a thin layer of creamy peanut butter, topped with a couple thick slices of tomato, sprinkled with salt and pepper. Its best when the toast is still warm, so make sure you have your tomato slices and peanut butter ready as soon as it comes out of the toaster!

    Oh, and crumbled queso fresco.

Peanut butter and honey on fakeout whole wheat bread, like Nature's Own. The honey somehow makes the interior of the bread almost crispy–a delightful textural mystery. Then Swiss cheese, fresh garden (not storebought) tomato, lettuce and mayo on real whole wheat. And cucumber, mayo on whole wheat with salt and pepper on both. Summer on a sandwich!

Ooh! And I forgot to mention another solid option: Peanut butter and honey on a toasted English muffin – but here's the key – throw it into the microwave for exactly 11 seconds after its all put together – the peanut butter gets all nice and melty and its better than any dessert out there :) the only thing that could make it better is chocolate – but then it would be an actual dessert instead of a sandwich, wouldn't it? (I'm sure this would also work with almond butter if you've got a peanut allergy) :)

the other one was a nice rye slice, covered in fresh tomato slices, add slices of nice runny stinkin' limburger cheese with some minced onion and salt and pepper ... omg the stench. Add a glass of nice cold beer.

American Thanksgiving leftover special: turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, slather both sides of whole wheat with mayo. drool!

tuna salad (made with mayo and sweet pickle relish) and tomato slices on whole wheat bread slathered with mayo, of course.

Three slices of white bread. First layer, spread some mayo, not too much, then put some thin slices of tomato, then put some thin slices of avocado. Sprinkle with a bit of salt. Top with another slice of bread.
Last layer, spread on some egg salad. No celery or anything on it. Just chopped hardboiled egg mixed with mayo and a bit of salt. Top with last slice of bread. Cut off the edges and slice in triangle shapes. Enjoy! These are called Triples in my country they are yummy!

Tuna melt on cinnamon raisin bread with aged Cheddar is very good, especially when I have seaweed gomasio, a Japanese seasoning mix with dried fish roe and sesame seeds, to add to the tuna salad. My old college lunch staple when I had to rush was bologna on Wonder bread with mayo and a layer of potato chips or Fritos corn chips smashed firmly into the bread. The latter is something I haven't had in years, but the thought of it still makes my mouth water.

The nuttiness of the peanut butter, the sweetness of the Miracle Whip and the tanginess of the spaghetti sauce with the texture of the noodles...it's just one wild ride in the mouth!

I always loved peanut butter and Cheetos sandwiches. The crunchy ones are the best to put on the sandwich, and you can't put them too long before you eat it because they'll get soggy. It's a nice change when you're getting sick of peanut butter!

Colby Cheese is the best for grilled cheese–all gooey. Provolony is best when you are a kid–you have contests to see who can stretch their halves of sandwich the farthest!

Yep tomato soup with a grilled cheese is a winner.
But any cheese will do for variety, add sweet pickle slices and side of ketchup.
Yes I will buy Velveeta for a try...

My grandfather and my dad loved applebutter and liverwurst sandwiches (my grandpa was of German extraction and I think it must have been an Illinois thing). Apparently my mom tried them while she was pregnant with me and couldn't get enough. I refused to even try the combo on principle until last year, when, visiting my parents one weekend, decided I felt brave enough to give it a shot. And you know what? It was good!! The sweetness of the applebutter was a great contrast to the tang of the liverwurst.

Fresh mozzarella, sundried tomatos and artichoke hearts on an italian. It is absolutely the best if the mozzarella is just made and warm. Piccinninni's in Hoboken, NJ made them the best but they are long gone. I am on a quest to find good mozzarella since they closed.

    "Edith Ann" (Lily Tomlin)Sandwhich:

2 slices of bread, one side with mustard the other with peanut butter- the mustard side has lettuce and pickles, salami, and cheese, little twisty things called pretzels, tuna fish, a black olive and some oatmeal she didnt eat at breakfast. The other side had little raisens from out a box, most of them fell on the floor, but most of them went on the sandwhich, then you smash both side together and place a dictionary on top and then feed it to your dog Buster.

I remember this skit for my preschool days watching sesame street and feeling bad for her because she sounded like she had a stuffy nose. LOL

In 2004 in Amsterdam, I stumbled upon a sandwich counter devoted entirely to grilled cheese and its many possible variations. Let me just say that grilled cheese with banana slices in it is *phenomenal.* However, I have never attempted to recreate it, since it probably wouldn't approach that level of perfection. :)
