 While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday. Start your engines for some rum-running - August 16 is National Rum Day! Quench your thirst and partake in this sweet Caribbean spirit today. Made by distilling the byproducts of molasses and sugarcane, rum ends up the strong, silent type on the scale of alcoholic beverages. You can take a swig of the grog right from the bottle or enjoy a little rum in a piña colada (perhaps while getting caught in the rain), Mojito, daiquiri, Mai Tai or a fruity punch. You could even enjoy a dash of the good stuff in your Bananas Foster or other recipes with a bit of an edge. At the end of the day, you may be asking, "But why is the rum gone?!?" |

Rum is great straight but my favorite way to have it served is in Bananas Foster... this recipe is easy to follow and really hits the spot.

The term 'rum' is very probably short for 'rumbullion' (not sure I spelled that right). Rumbullion means 'a very loud noise' and was a term commonly associated with canon fire. Also, rum was the first spirit to have a 'proof'. Sailors would make a small pile of gun powder and hose it with rum. They would then light the whole thing. If there was more water than alcohol, the gun powder wouldn't burn. If there wad more alcohol than water, the gun powder would burn, thereby showing 'proof' of the spirit's potency. BTW, if you like spiced rum, give Brinley Gold Shipwreck Rum. It's inexpensive and super smooth!

Ballast Point just started making a nice, strong, sipping rum.
For a rum with a slight orange flavor try Pyrat.

Sitting on the third floor balcony of Pusser's Landing on St. John, sipping a Painkiller and watching the sun set over St. Thomas. One of my favorite rum memories.
Great rum. Watching my future ex guzzling Pusser's with some guy in a bar, forget she's married and head off to do him on his boat in the BVI. Ah...those were the days. :)
Nevertheless, Pusser's is a great rum.
Dawn Beach in St. Maarten....Mr. Busby's (beach bar & grill)....a large container of Mount Gay with bananas sliced up in it sits on the bar....sipping it while looking out at St. Bart's....doesn't get any better than that.

Whaler's sweet dark rum (regular flavor), pineapple juice, some 151, sweet/sour mix, and you have a killer Mai Tai.
I am all for that, celebrate, celebrate, but when is it Natrional Alcohol day, that would include all those who do not like rum. As for me, "gimme di wites"
Meyer's and OJ. The good stuff in the OJ counter balances the bad stuff in the rum.
I do like mine mixed a bit – dark rum and sweet vermouth. One smooth drink.

Good rum was never intended to be mixed with anything. Straight over ice with a wedge of lime is the way God wanted it to be consumed. We ain't talking Baccardi rum here. If you buy cheap then go ahead and mix that swill.
