While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday.

Keep your ketchup bottle at the ready - August 12 is National Shoestring Fries Day!

Perfectly crispy and quick-frying, giving your potatoes the julienne treatment makes for all the right moves when it comes to cooking up shoestring fries.

Narrowly cut, this style of fry - after all, there are so many kinds - was created and perfected by American fast food restaurants to supply the demand of their fry-crazy patrons. This salty snack gets its name from the consistency - they start out crispy and end up a little floppy, like shoelaces.

So if you're ready to do the shoestring tangle, dig out your mandoline and julienne the day away, or if you're handy with a knife, chop up taters to your heart's content.

Frying up a batch won't tie you up in knots, either.
