While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday.

Get on the banana boat bandwagon - August 10 is National Banana Split Day!

Split a 'nanner down the middle, pile on the chocolate, strawberry and vanilla ice cream and don't forget to dig out your hot fudge sauce and pineapple topping! Salute today with a flavor party in your mouth (and a wee bit of brain freeze).

Thanks to a pharmaceutical twentysomething in 1904, the banana split was born out of sheer ice cream creativity. After experimenting with different flavor combos, David Strickler decided adding a banana to the bottom of the dish was just the right touch.

Today is also National S'mores Day, so finish off your ice cream coma with a nice toasty graham-cracker-chocolate-marshmallow mess by the campfire - that is, if your banana split isn't quite enough and leaves you wanting s'more.

I saw that CNN has today as National Banana Split Day – but I can only find one reference to today as the day. August 25, seems to be the day that is connected to it instead.
