alright. i just read an article on about spanking and the goings on/effects of in families. the author of the article says at the end that she feels guilty for spanking her kid. i'll tell ya right now... if i have a kid, and they do some of the stuff that i did when i was little, they are DEF going to get a spanking. i got them, and guess what? i respected my parents and didnt do that again that's for sure! i didnt get many, but when i did... whoo! i knew mom and dad were mad at me. i know there's a lot of controversy about it...but there's most certainly a time and a place for spankings...i truly think if kids today had to sit in their 8th grade classroom and listen while billy the bad kid got taken out into the hallway and got spanked by the assistant principal for stealing/fighting/etc... we wouldnt have nearly as much of that kind of stuff happening today. just some food for thought for the afternoon. :)

    • The Witty One@wendy

Kids need the fear of god put into them. I got in trouble and I only got spanked once. But that ever present fear of my fathers hand kept me in line. From then on I was only bad enough to incur my mom's wrath.

      June 28, 2011 at 4:04 pm |
      • wendy@two

amen!! my dad's belt ... whew!! only made him take it off once, and that's all it took!! :)

        June 28, 2011 at 4:11 pm |
    • Mare@Wendy

I believe it's all in the way the parents deal with the kids. I don't believe any of my nieces or nephews have been spanked (that I know of), but they all know "the look". Even the 2 year old knows it. And it doesn't matter who gives it to them, as soon as an adult gives it to them, they all calm right down.

      June 28, 2011 at 4:07 pm |
      • wendy@mare

exactly! like two said, the 'fear of god'.... or dad as it were. :) i truly feel it all boils down to respect.

        June 28, 2011 at 4:12 pm |
    • Evil Grin

As long as you don't spank in anger, make it clear what you are spanking the kid for and how they can correct their behavior, and make sure they know you love them, I don't see why everyone gets up in arms.

That method worked for generations upon generations for kids. It's only been the last couple that have had problems with it. And we're pretty messed up as generations, I think. There are some pretty awful things we see happen on a daily basis.

      June 28, 2011 at 4:12 pm |
      • wendy@eg

        exactly!! :)

        June 28, 2011 at 4:14 pm |
    • AleeD@wendy

Note: this isn't going to be have anything to do with the dungeon.

Both of my parents spanked us in anger. Daddy only used his hand – and that was rare. Mom used her hand, the back-side of a hairbrush, a belt and on my little sister (15 at the time) a flyswatter. The term "domestic abuse" wasn't an everyday expression like it is now. It was considered "discipline." Mom was heavy handed. It got to the point that I couldn't talk to her about anything for fear of getting hit. How's that for nurturing mother's love?

It's hard to say what I would do today to discipline children because I'll never have any. What I do know is I wouldn't hit them in anger like my folks did. I would send them to their room " 'til I decide what to do with you" (I got that expression thrown at me alot when I got older). I've since learned that sending the child to their room has more to do with the parent needing a cooling-off period than a punishment for the kids' misbehavior.

      June 28, 2011 at 4:26 pm |
      • wendy@aleeD

ooo i dreaded being sent to my room to 'wait til your father comes home'. i couldnt stand the waiting!!! i'm so sorry to hear that about your parents...there's a limit to everything... )))hugs((((

  9. Truth

Ok all, I have a question of the day that I could use some guidance on...

I have an eye doctor appointment tonight. I go in every year since I wear contacts and replace them on that schedule. I have been going to the same eye doctor for years and I think she is great.

Here's the problem: Her husband was just arrested tor suspicion of child molestation. Do I say nothing, or do I bring it up and show her some support? I am strongly leaning toward saying nothing, but I think that wives especially in this situation need to feel the support of those around them.

    June 28, 2011 at 3:51 pm |
    • RichardHead@Truth

IMHO-I would say nothing. If she brings it up then you can talk about it. Your support is shown by going back to her each year.

      June 28, 2011 at 3:59 pm |
      • Truth@RichHead

That's exactly what I was thinking...If anything, tell her how much I appreciate her professionalism, her attitude and so forth. Has to be rough to go through though.

        June 28, 2011 at 4:02 pm |
    • Mare@Truth

That's a tough one. If you say something, it may upset her, if you don't say something, she may get offended. I guess I wouldn't say anything – unless you are on a 1st name basis with her. No Dr. Smith, or Dr. Sue, but just Sue. Then I'd say you have a relationship that she feels comfortable with, and can talk to you. Otherwise, if it's just a professional relationship, I wouldn't say anything.

      Good luck!

      June 28, 2011 at 4:01 pm |
    • Evil Grin

I would not ask her directly in case she is embarassed or sensitive to the subject. However, if you ask her how her life has been recently and she chooses to share some of it, then you could mention that you heard about it and you sympathize with her. You might offer something going on in your life to ease into the subject.

But I would definitely let her bring it up. That seems like it would be a really touchy subject.

      June 28, 2011 at 4:03 pm |
    • MT Miner

Think I would just go with the flow of whatever the conversation may be. I am betting the hubby issues have already impacted her business and finances negatively, so you are at a minimum helping her out financially at a time when she will most likely need it with the legal bills, etc. That said, i would venture to guess that if you ask how business has been, it may well move in to the subject at hand anyhow.

      June 28, 2011 at 4:04 pm |
    • wendy@truth

i agree...i would say nothing. any mention may cause unintended embarrassment...and yes, your support is clearly shown by your continued patronage.

      June 28, 2011 at 4:07 pm |
    • AleeD@Truth

Normally I would agree with you offering support. Is there a chance that there is more than suspicion? Or is it a case of someone trying to extort $$ out of the good doctor's family?

Maybe I watch too much TV, but if there's a chance that she knows about it and has been turning a blind eye, it could get ugly. If he's been wrongly accused, then, of course they'll need all the support in the world.

Bring it up neutrally. Be straight with her as to what & how you found out. See how she responds & react from there.

As much as there's conflict between the followers of Islam and the followers of Judiasm, if a Muslim cannot get halal meat then s/he can get kosher meat because the kosher laws are more strict than halal laws (the only thing really that would allow a meat to be kosher but not halal is if the meat is then cooked or soaked in alcohol).

Come on and join us1 The weather is great down here! BTW, I went to family reunion and passed 2 elk farms and 1 buffalo farm on the way there. I was almost tempted to stop in and get some meat in your honor.

        June 28, 2011 at 3:15 pm |
      • MT Miner

Lol, I am well aware of the weather down there, I have spent my entire life there, just on a short vacation so as not to offend any of the 18 year old girls we have here for summer students. It is eerily silent at the mine lately, all the dirty old miners have to behave.

Both the bison and elk are awesome choices, my number 2 and 3 favorites after mountain lion. Didn't realize that domestic game farms were that popular in your neck of the woods, sounds liek they are around though.

I knew that we had a couple of buffalo farms in Indiana but I was surprised to see the elk. The calves were very cute. We also saw a pick-up truck full of billy goats, a baby deer standing by the side of the road, 2 Amish buggies and an Amish farmer plowing his field. Oh, and a random "jesus is coming" sign that made me very leery to go around the next bend in the road.

I saw that article earlier and my blood pressure went up...granted I read that right after the anti-circumcision thread which probably didn't help. Kosher slaughtering is one of the most humane methods and from what I understand halal slaughtering follows the same guidelines.
There are way too many laws being passed that come a little close to be anti-semitic which worries me. Apparently there is some other CA city trying to get that on the ballot and that organization is helping another 46 cities (states?) draft legislation.

Joshua Tree, CA is serious boonies. No wonder she's having trouble getting help. It's pretty sparse out ther and it's getting hotter than he ll, too. And the wind is relentless.

Tell me about it. There is NOTHING out there for her, except really inexpensive housing – which she needs.

    hello All!

@Mare- do they have a Schwann delivery where your friend is in CA? You can check from their website. When my sister in TX had a baby I sent her a gift card for Schwann, but you might be able to order right from the website and pay and then they deliver it right to the house. Just a thought.

She's in Joshua Tree CA. I'm trying to get a mailing address for her now, so I can send something today – I've donated via her site, but I'd like to give her food so she doesn't have to find a way to the store.

That miso cup'o'noodles looks good. (Even though I've never had a noodely miso before.)

I'll take a couple of those. And a very dry martini.

    June 28, 2011 at 11:31 am |

Ditto on the dry can have my share of the cup o'noodles, though. :)

GIN; show the glass the bottle of vermouth and then put it back on the shelf. Shaken, stirred, stomped on...and served straight up; 2 olives. I'm headed into the third of five meetings today! "That kind of day" doesn't even come close. Pray for me (and the others I may have to hurt). :)

They sent my Census form back!!

    In answer to the question
    "Do you have any dependents?",
I put ...... "Asylum seekers, illegal immigrants, crack heads, unemployable bastards, the cast of The Jerry Springer Show, 80,000 people in our 133 penal establishments in Texas, leftovers in Texas from Katrina, half of job-stealing Mexico, All of the Congress, most of the Senate and a Muslim President!"
Apparently this wasn't an acceptable answer.

  25. Mare

Good morning all. Stressing here today. Found out that someone I know through FB is really struggling financially. She lost her car, chipped a bone in her ankle, has a mentally ill little boy, and now has no food.

I'm trying to figure out a way to get food to her today, but every place I look into has either a waiting list, or you have to pick it up yourself. I've been looking at shipping her staples from Amazon, but she won't get those for another week – and with the holiday, she's screwed.

    Sorry, just had to rant.

    June 28, 2011 at 11:07 am |
    • Michele G

can she get to a senior center? they might be able to help. Just a thought.

      June 28, 2011 at 11:09 am |
      • Mare@Michele

Unfortunately, right now, she can't walk, so can't get to the bus stop.

She lives in a tiny town, and no one seems to be willing to help her. When she injured her ankle on Sat. she tried calling all her friends and some churches to drive her home from the hospital (911 to get there), but no one helped her. There were people willing to pay for a cab for her, but she refused, saying she'd rather have someone spend the money on food.

I think a big part of why people won't help her is her son. He's schizophrenic, and I think people are either afraid of him, or just can't deal with him. I feel so bad for her. She's in CA, and I'm in NY, otherwise I'd be helping her more. :*(

        June 28, 2011 at 11:13 am |
      • Michele G

Oh boy. The mental illness is a savage, HUGE, off putting thing for many people. If she could negotiate some way for help without the helpers having to deal with her son she might have at least modest success.

And that will be, from the sound of it. a long term strategy she just might have to invent.

        June 28, 2011 at 11:18 am |
      • Michele G

how old is her son? Is he big and likely to be violent? Or is he adolescent or younger and less of a potential threat? I.e.: how intrusive is his behavior when visitors are at their home? If he is uncontrollable she has an even bigger problem.

        June 28, 2011 at 11:25 am |
      • Mare@Michele

I know – huge problem for her is that she's a single parent, and on disability. She can't work because her son needs constant supervision, and even if she could work, the cost of the child care would be more than what she could make.

She's screwed any way she looks at it. Right now she's just trying to stay a float till she can sell her house. Then she hopes she can get a car so at least she can get to the places she needs to – grocery store, food bank, anywhere.

        June 28, 2011 at 11:29 am |
      • Mare@Michele

Oh no... If she's in CA there's got to be some assistance group that can help, even if she's in a tiny town.

      *puts her in my thoughts*

      June 28, 2011 at 11:40 am |
    • wendy@mare

my heart goes out to her.. schizophrenia is such a hard thing to deal with, especially for a small child. has she been able to get in contact with hospice? i know they branch out a bit and help with parents/children in situations such as hers. makes one wish that they could drive over there real quick and take her to the grocery store.

      June 28, 2011 at 11:55 am |
    • SeaBee@Mare

Where is she in CA? I have worked with many of the philanthropic groups and church groups, here in CA. Let me see what I can do!

      • Truth@Biddle, Sir Biddle

        Got to love the internet(s)...

Nice location though. Next door to the Colorado Ballet. I used to like having lunch on the patio and watching the dancers doing their thing.

        June 28, 2011 at 10:29 am |
      • Sir Biddle@truth

YOU'RE the guy they have been talking about all these years.

        June 28, 2011 at 10:31 am |
      • Truth@Biddle, Sir Biddle

An amazing amount of dancers smoke...Not sure why, except that they probably can't eat a lot. Many of them take their smoke break on the sidewalk facing my building. Not real hard on the eyes. They also have a contract to lease parking in my building, so many of them are in and out through the lobby. Like i said, not tough on the eyes.

        June 28, 2011 at 10:38 am |
      • Michele G

the smoking this is strange. I'd think that the athleticism of strenuous dance would require DEEP heavy breathing. How can you do that if you smoke?

        June 28, 2011 at 11:15 am |
      • JainaJade@SirB and others

as a former ballet dancer the reason for smoking is that smoking is a diuretic, which makes it easier to stay pencil thin. I would say more than half of the girls in my company smoked and probably about 20% of the guys.
I never jumped on that bandwagon, I'm naturally slender and have enough lung problems with my asthma that I didn't feel like adding to the problem.

I watched the last 45 minutes the other night and I though it was really good. I think they are re-running it again later this week so I'll hopefully be able to watch the first half this time.

Good coming of age angle in it as well. Like i sadi though, LOVED the soundtrack. Branaugh is perfect in it as well.
