From our post Does 4-H desensitize kids to killing?:

Momof2 says,

I think children are desensitized more to killing by playing violent video games, but, I do not preach to people about what they expose their own kids to.

We have always believed in being honest with our kids (4&6) about where meat comes from. They know chicken is from real chickens, pork from pigs and beef from cows. My son did question "angel" hair pasta.

Saying raising an animal in 4-H desensitizes youth to killing is like saying letting kids run track teaches them to run from the police. The 2 ideas can be linked but not very credibly. Many 4-H members don't even have animals so, I know, I am a 4-H Educator. Many of the 4-H members who do have animals care about their animals deeply. They learn that animals are for consumption and work hard to make sure they are providing the highest quality consumable product they can. They are not desensitized to killing, they have just learned to accept this fact in a mature manner. If you ever witness a child with an animal they have raised you will understand there is a connection between the two. Raising an animal for butchering is not an experience for everyone but it can be a rewarding, valuable experience that teaches youth about responsibility, hard work,to evaluate their animal, to budget their time and finances and to care for something beyond themselves.

As a pregnant vegetarian, I am was unsure as to explain where meat comes from to my future child (first-time mom). Reading this article makes me realize that honesty is the best policy, nothing needs to be dwelled on or made to be a bigger deal than it is. My husband is not a vegetarian, and my children will not be forced to either (an annoying question I get all the time).
The angel hair pasta comment? Adorable!
