While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday. Shake it up, baby - June 20 is National Vanilla Milkshake Day! Even if you're still in a food coma from all that Father's Day eating, a cool, creamy milkshake is sure to cure any remaining summertime blues - and induce a good brain freeze. There's something magical about blending vanilla ice cream and milk together into a thick shake. It couldn't get much better, or easier. But before the days of the electric blender, a "milkshake" was very different from its sweet, innocent descendant. In fact, the blender was invented to create soda fountain shake concoctions. The frosted shake soon became an American favorite, and we still turn up restaurants and drive-ins from lunchtime until 2 a.m., when only a thick shake will do. Stir up your own milkshake or go to a favorite burger joint in honor of the vanilla milkshake. Maybe if you're nice, they'll put a cherry on top. Or if you're feeling feisty, swipe someone else's shake. |

Love milkshakes, but vanilla is not for me. (Traumatized by vanilla ice cream as a child. Don't ask. The only way I can eat it is mixed or topped with another flavoring.)
I had a chocolate shake yesterday, made by a friend. :)
I think I'm gonna treat myself to some icecream for lunch.
