Ray Isle is Food & Wine's executive wine editor. We trust his every cork pop and decant - and the man can sniff out a bargain to boot. Take it away, Ray.

Memorial Day is the start of grilling season, and while there are certainly other things you can grill than burgers, why? A burger is an excellent thing. To that end, here are three great burger wines:

NV Lini Labrusco Lambrusco ($14)
It’s purple, it’s fizzy, it comes from Italy, and it’s really good, the latter part being what separates it from most Lambruscos.

2009 Crios de Susanna Balbo Malbec ($15)
Malbec was made for grilled meat (that may explain its popularity in Argentina, where people eat something like 125 pounds of beef each year, per person). Susanna Balbo, one of Argentina’s greatest winemakers, has a knack for the grape, which this juicy, lightly spicy red makes clear.

2009 Foxglove Zinfandel ($14)
Bob and Jim Varner make high-end, terrific wines under their own name, and inexpensive, also terrific wines under the Foxglove label. There’s a little Petite Sirah in this, which adds some backbone to Zinfandel’s lush fruit.

A 2007 CalPoly Mustang Red ($16) goes well with burgers. If you can't visit San Luis Obispo, you can buy it online and support the university's Wine and Viticulture Program.

Grilling? I think water boarding works better. For this any inexpensive bubbling wine works best. Never water board with a wine you wouldn't drink.

I get the fact that grilling is a big thing on Memorial Day, and in the proper forum has every right to be discussed. But SHAME on CNN for their wording of that headline on their homepage. Did anyone even stop to think that a title, "For Memorial Day, all about grilling," might sound at least slightly insensitive? Frankly it's embarrassing.

This Memorial Day, my friends and I will be working in the 120 degree heat of Kandahar, Afghanistan. Memorial Day is not and should not be thought of as the start of grilling season. Sure, get together with families and friends, but don't just take it as another day off or something trivial like grilling season. It is a very special day for those of us that have lost and continue to lose. The other day, 7 soldiers died in one attack in Southern Afghanistan.... oh, but wait. It is the start of grilling season!! Memorial Day is a gift from those that made the ultimate sacrifice for our country's freedom and there will be more soldiers who will die today while you are arguing about wine and grilling. Have some respect.

Amen. I was furious when i saw that headline on their homepage. What a spit in the face to all of our war dead.

Hey guys! Guys! I got an idea! Instead of having parties and talking about food, why don't we remember the soldiers who have died in our names, whether it was for freedom, for nothing, or otherwise! How about that guys!

How do these burgers and beverages differ from July 4th and Labor Day? Could it be that the media and commercial ventures have distracted us from the memorial in Memorial Day? It's so deeply moving to see an American flag on the grave of a veteran, to say thank you to a veteran today and to remember those who don't have a day off to grill because they are in uniform and vulnerable to losing their lives for freedom sake. Cheers!

alright. mistake number #1: drinking wine while eating a burger. a burger should be accompanied by beer, not wine.

Dude, red with beef, bison venison or game burgers; white with turkey, fish or veggie burgers. If that doesn't suit your tailfeathers then drink any damn wine you want with any damn thing you want.

Sadly, sadly mistaken survey – If In-N-Out is the best burger then you are used to eating garbage. Try Smash Burgers ... hands down the best fast food burger in the country!

    News flash to CNN/Food & Wine/Ray Isle:

Budget wine = under $10 per bottle.

Finding a worthy wine at that level, & you'll impress me. But at $15? You have too mnay good choices, so not a really big deal to accomplish that!

    @fjawodfc: Please leave, loser!

If you like no-nonsense reds and don't want to take out a loan, try the Bogle Pitite Syrah. About eight bucks at a good discount store, maybe 12 or so at a mom & pop liqour store.

$14? $15? I've consistently purchased very decent French and Spanish wines, Cotes du Rhones, Malbecs, etc., etc., for way less than that. That's not budget in my mind. Somebody's been shoppin' at the wrong Class 6 store. As to "fjawodfc", if he/she is a Believer do they think that Jesus was also a loser? Seems to me he did indeed consume wine, if one believes the scriptures. Methinks the comment made by the "Sir/Madame fjawodfc" is some oral farting emanating from the fingertips. That or they've just knocked down a bottle of cheap scotch.

I thought there was at least one bottle of chardonnay in the cooler, oh well, let me try that zinfandel. Ahhh, that works well out here in a warm afternoon. And where's the beef? What? You're still grinding it up? Next your going to tell me you slaughtered the cow yourself. Is everyone aware the webber is cold? Let's get that fire going. Seriously, we really have to burn those logs into charcoal first? Jeez, let's hope the wine holds out... Who's up for throwing some horse shoes? Can I have some more wine please. I'm going to try the malbec this time... Yeah man, this is a fine BBQ.

It sounds like you have some anger issues fjawodfc. Would you care to express them in a more definitive manner? Here, take this little pill first, it will help you relax, you cannot cure yourself if you are uptight like this.

Yes. Alcohol is for losers. It's also for the rest of us, who are not losers. Isn't it great that alcohol can be for everyone? That's what I am talking about. See, it's unlike water. Some people can't do water. Water, unlike alcohol, is not for everyone.

To quote Billy Joel(I hate doing that, but it seems appropriate here), Some say it's better but I say it ain't
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
the sinners are much more fun.

totally agree, those are going to go great with my burgers and the "Love You Long Time Pork Ribs" I am making on Monday... a nice zinfandel will go great with the ribs too! They are these Asian BBQ ribs that I braise for a couple of hours before company comes and then throw them on the grill for another 30 minutes.. the recipe is actually on line just google them or search for "whipped and beaten culinary works" to find them... but be warned, they are on a site for a politically incorrect cookbook that is hilarious, so if you can't take a joke or if you get offended easily.. I'd skip it..

Amen. Just bought three Vinho Verdes. I won't be having any red wine for a few months or burgers for that matter. It's too hot in Atlanta for me. It will be lighter fair – mostly seafood and salads.
