Breakfast buffet

While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday and the most delicious finds on TV.

The December holidays are behind us, but so long as temperatures are dipping into single digits anywhere in the US, we're happy to keep taking our tipples on the warmed-up side. January 17 is National Hot Buttered Rum Day, and we humbly suggest celebrating with the recipe above, scanned from our 1941 edition of W.C. Whitfield's drink mixing masterpiece 'Here's How'.

Not in a rum state of mind, but still hot 'n' bothered over the notion of a steamy beverage? Pop some butter in your whiskey toddy. We surely won't tell.

What's on TV?

"Mad Hungry with Lucinda Scala Quinn" – Hallmark Channel, 11:30 a.m. ET
Soups on! Lucinda whips up cannellini bean soup, pumpkin soup and tomato soup with mozzarella croutons.

"Secrets of a Restaurant Chef" – Food Network, 12 p.m. ET
With a few techniques, fresh pasta is easy to make at home and can contribute to dishes such as broccoli rabe ravioli.

"Soul Food" – Lifetime, 12:30 p.m. ET
Traditional Sunday dinners turn nasty when three sisters bring their problems to the table.

"Cake Boss: Next Great Baker" – TLC, 9 p.m. ET
The contestants must design and bake a cake inspired by a hot new car they all get to test drive.

"The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" – NBC, 11:35 p.m. ET
Jay interviews Gordon Ramsay, but this time without Sofia Vergara.

Tell the truth, you cut out the names of dishes from a dozen cookbooks, place them in a hat and draw one out each day, don't you?

Although, this does sound like something I'd gladly try.
