5@5 is a daily, food-related list from chefs, writers, political pundits, musicians, actors, and all manner of opinionated people from around the globe.

Since we just hit you with a pretty gut-punching interview with Chef Suvir Saran on the subject of HIV/AIDS activism and the disease's impact on the food world, we decided to lighten things up a bit this afternoon with a good old-fashioned food fight courtesy of the original shock jock, Steve Dahl.

Besides being a popular radio personality, Dahl considers himself somewhat of a pizza aficionado - and now, he's throwing down the gauntlet declaring deep-dish Chicago-style pizza the best in all the land. What say you New York?

Five Reasons Chicago Pizza is the Best: Steve Dahl

1. "Because the pieces are so large, thick and cheesy, you can usually only eat one or two pieces, so there are always plenty of leftovers."

2. "The best part about Chicago pizza leftovers are that they reheat splendidly in the microwave, due to their thickness and consistency and you don’t have to do any work besides eat it again!"

3. "Chicago pizza can be used as a spare tire in a roadside emergency."

    I grew up on New York-styled pizza and I still believe it is the best when it is fresh. Thin crust or Sicilian... just awesome. However, after eating at Lou Malanti's in Chicago last spring, I have to admit that Chicago-styled pizza leftovers taste better than NY-styled pizza leftovers. The textures just hold up or heat up better the next day.

    Chicagoans have the best thick pizza because they know you have to wait for it to cook a while. It's not Chicago pizza if after you order they don't say, "It's going to be an hour or more wait"

    I'm a native Chicagoan, had my first pizza from Leona's in the early 50s, when they were still on Belmont.
    Best pizza ever is Chicago style, thin crust, cut in squares (not wedges).
    There is no better pizza than in Chicago.
    I alternate between Salerno's (great cheese) and La Gondola (best overall).

    I lived both in the east coast and here in Chicago. I can tell you right now, Chicago pizza is awful! Not just their deep dish but all of it. I have yet to find one that tastes like pizza should. They do something weird to the sauce here and even the thin crust is weird, it's like eating cardboard. Though nothing is as horrid as deep dish. Give me new york style any day.

    don't know if anyone mentioned it or not.. but one of my pizza memories is the wonderful white pizza we had in Scranton, PA. Never have seen it anywhere else... White cheese ... two crusts... onion and I don't remember the sauce.. but that was so good.... wish I had one now.

    My kid went to school at the Universityu of Missouri in Columbia. They had a place called Shakespears that had the best pizza ever. The ussed a whole wheat crust and just the correct about of cheese and toppings. nothing better

    Chicago-style – whether pizza, hot dogs, whatever – is synonymous with "over the top". Only a Chicago blowhard always insists on loading everything on, whether it's a pizza or a hot dog with onions, tomatoes, peppers of various sorts, relishes, seasonings, mustard and KETCHUP. A bunch of flavors that don't go together and turn into nothing. Chicago-style means low quality, with lots of toppings thrown on to overpower discernment. I can handle about one slice of Chicago-style pizza before nausea sets in. It's just too much. Not so much the toppings, but the butter infused crust. It's sickening. That being said, I love thick crust pies with a normal, crispy/chewy base crust. In NYC it's called Sicilian. "Base" is the key. It supports everything else, and the flavor is hearty and simple, contrasting with the richer flavors of the sauce, cheese and toppings. With Chicago-style, on the other hand, everything – crust, sauce, cheese, toppings, melds into one big, sloppy, over-the top, nauseating mess. Also, the cheese. A pie from NYC uses good quality, flavorful mozzarella, Chicago-style uses cheep mozzarella with the consistency of window caulk – like any chain pizza. Get over it Windy City! You have always played second fiddle to the Big Apple.

    PS: I do love Chicago and Chicagoans, but the food is over the top.

    I agree with NYC Pizza comments. As someone who has lived in Chicagoland for over 50 years I love Chicago thin-crust pizza. Whether it is cut in squares or pie shaped pieces it is the best. Slightly yeast-tasting very thin crusty crust, not pre-made, with sauce and then cheese with mushrooms and sausage and peppers or pepperoni – it is much better than NYC greasy pizza and Chicago deep dish pizza – which I had never heard of until I was 15 yrs. old. My husband is a native of New Mexico & pizza there was awful – until new Chicago area inhabitants moved there. Same with Florida. Forget California altogether – why do they even bother?

    I live in Chicago and I have to say, it is NOT the best! First, Chicago pizza was invented by a guy from TEXAS after WWII. The reason they have pan style, which is a elaborate name for TOO MUCH DOUGH, is to make it look big. Why? Because they are the SECOND city and Chicago is always trying to be better than New York Pizza. NY has the best pizza, hands down. They have the tradition, they have a culture that adores pizza. Their are over 18,000 pizza places in NYC area. The same things can be said about the Chicago Hot Dog.

    That said, Chicago does have some great food, great restaurants. The best steaks I've had in the US are in Chicago! The steakhouses are just great, lively places! You can wear jeans and a T shirt and go to the best steakhouses in the city! Also have some great deserts!

    I grew up in Cicero, right outside of Chicago, I've since moved south then to Oklahoma, and how I miss Chicago pizza! There's nothing like a nice stuffed pizza from Uno's, Giordano's, or some old school thin crust from Benny's in Berwyn! My mouth is watering just thinking about it!!!

    Spacca Napoli in Chicago makes one of the best true (Neapolitan style) pizzas I have had. Then again Patsy's (Grimaldi's) in Brooklyn does as well. So for true and original pizza, I'd consider it a tie. Both are only a small step behind Antica Pizza da Michele in Naples which defines perfection. Both are truly fantastic.

    As a former resident of both Chicago and New York, I consider it a tie.

        Do they even have Domino's in Chicago??? I've moved away in 1995, and I can't think of a Domino's or Pizza Hut in the City...maybe because I would not have ever though of a pizza chain living in Chicago!

    Can't we just get along?? I'm a Chicago girl, and have had both Chicago-style and New-York style, and actually prefer New York style, but I'm not about to start arguing with everyone who likes Chicago-style. "No YOU'RE wrong" makes you sound like you're about 10 years old.

    Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, I never had or even heard of "Chicago Pizza" until I moved out west. Only pizza I ever are was with a crisp crust, corn meal on the bottom, grease pooled on top, cut into squares. Was home last year and had some great stuff at a place on 95th and Halstead. My month is watering now. My cousins who still live in my old neighbor would never eat deep dish, that's for those on the North Side.

    I have had both NY pizza and Chicago Deep dish. They are both great depending on what mood you are in. Sometimes the wife and I head out and get ourselfs some Lou Mals and sometimes we go to Gigios. Like lanuguage, food progresses. Get a life and enjoy it all you simpletons.

    As far as toppings go, simple is better when you have a truly good pizza. You don't need a bunch of fancy junk- that stuff has its place in other foods. I love thin crust with fresh garlic and green olives. If you are eating with an anchovy fan and don't want fish on your pizza, have them try green olives!
    ...but I also love deep dish with only cheese and chopped tomatoes. It all depends on what I'm in the mood for!
    It's funny how mad people are getting at each other! Pizza rivalry is a very real occurrence!

    As for the random BBQ discussion, neither NY or Chicago can even pretend to be contenders. South Carolina is the best IMO. Normally it's slow-cooked in a spicy rub, then drizzled with a super-sweet molasses BBQ sauce... Goes from sweet/tangy to spicy/savory as you progress through it.

    Tennessee is too sweet, Texas is too spicy, and KC is too smoky. SC manages to pull all those flavors in, and balance them in a way that no other state can touch.

    Deep dish pizza is not a focaccia with tomato and cheese on it. It's a medium-thick crust pressed into a deep pan.

    All of you people who say that it's like "eating a loaf of bread" are only telling those of us who've had deep dish that you've never even tried it.

    Well, just try a deep dish with sausage and green olives at Pagliai's Pizza in Mankato, Minnesota, and you'd be able to tell both Chicagoans and New Yorkers that there's another contender. However, I admit that I frequently have to do Gino's East in Chicago in order to remain focused in the pursuit of perfection.

    DINA MIA PIZZA in northern Wisconsin is the best. Crunchy (not soggy) crust, slices of (not shredded) cheese, any toppings you want. Great prices. They could be nationwide, but they are content to stay in this area. The best kept secret about pizza in the nation (maybe the world).

    THE BEST PIZZA BY FAR is the ones I make with my partner.We take turns kneading and forming the crust. She puts her stuff on her half and I do the same. We share it hot from the oven with a favorite chilled wine, then digest it in bed while listening to music we both like.

Angelina's has the BEST pizza in Vermont. So when you are in Vermont go to Angelina's and get some delicious VERMONT pizza.

    I'm a softy for Chicago style, but I like to enjoy a variety of pizza.

    However, I'm shocked anyone likes STL pizza. I lived there for many years...absolutely loved the city, but was completely disgusted by the pizza. From my experience, the majority of people that actually liked that pizza grew up eating it, while the majority of transplants to the city hated it. Personally, I'd skip Imo's and go to Pi...or heck, even Pizza Hut.

    It is rather presumptuous for New Yorkers to call pizza anything other than “Italian“pizza. Clearly the New York style pizza is a true copy of the original recipe brought from Italy at the turn of the century and not a New York invention. Whereas the Chicago style pizza is not a true Italian style pizza but rather an American variation, a hybrid and has earned the right to the name.

    I have had pizza in about 1/2 of the states, all over Europe and Australia. Connecticut, NY pizzas are fantastic. But the first time I had Chicago pizza the judging was over. It truly is phenominal. Years ago I recall being on an airplane from Chicago to DFW and there had to be half of the overhead bins with pizzas to go stuffed in them. I wasn't impressed with this so called article but the reminder of Chicago pizza brought back some good memories.

    New York pizza is just plain boring, dry, and awful. The ingredients aren't as fresh as Chicago's, the crust has the consistency of a stale cracker, and the toppings are so sparse that I feel gypped paying for it.

    Deep dish is good, stuffed pan (Sauce on top) is GREAT. But as far as thin crust is concerned, I go for the city that has fresher ingredients, more toppings, and doesn't make their crust out of old saltines.

    Talk about a carb overload. The Chicago style or deep dish pizza is not a pizza; it is a thick open faced sandwich with pizza ingredients on top. Everybody I know that loves the Chicago pizza is a huge bread lover. To them having a thick slice of bread with pizza ingredients added on is literally icing on the cake.
    Like most foods I like balance and the Chicago pizza lacks any balance whatsoever. They try and pile on enormous amounts of sauce, cheese and meat to provide some balance to the overwhelming thick slice of bread but in the end it is too much of everything. When I eat Chicago pizza I scrape off the pizza toppings and eat maybe a bite or two of the bread and give the rest to my Chicago pizza lover friends who by the way don’t need it.

    Both styles are good. Sometimes I want a Chicago style, sometimes a NY style. It really depends on the day. I happen to like both. If I'm in Manhattan, I want the parmigiana pizza at NY Pizza Suprema on 8th. That was pretty good.
    Haven't eaten Chicago style in Chicago, but have a native in the office, who makes pies occasionally and brings them in.

    One more thing. It's a personal opinion and taste thing for a large percentage of the commenters, so if they don't match your own, that's perfectly ok and you don't have to resort to insults.

    Some pizza is not pizza, Chicago pizza is awesome, this comes from a New Yorker, but it's not pizza... Pizza by definition is a style of flatbread, Chicago pizza has more in common with a meat pie than it does a pizza, even the crust of a Chicago pizza is like that of a meat pie from various European countries... It's not pizza, it's an entirely different animal.

    Believe or not (and I know you won't) the best Pizza comes from a local joint here in Santa Fe , NM. Backroads Pizza. Thin,crispy crust,crackles when bitten into. Holds up to all the toppings of your choice. Unfortunately, likely a sign pointing to the end of days

      i'd say that Cincy chili is another beast, but still delicious nothing like it! I still need to have some real Chicago deep dish, i've just had some home made (not sure how authentic it is), but NJ pizza is great.

    I had the experience of living 9 and half years in Chicago (before I got smart and moved back to where I was raised- more scenic, no state income tax and much more mellow), and aside from the fact that I will never understand Chicago natives or their habits, or their sports teams, I will admit- the pizza is outstanding. For some of you who have never tasted a deep dish Chicago pizza, Edwardos does sell their pizzas online and they ship them anywhere packed in dry ice. Some of the other pizza places might do the same but I have not investigated it. I have never had the chance to visit New York so I cannot speak as to the "superiority" of their pizzas, and I am sure from their perspective theirs are just that- superior. But in the context of what I have eaten, the best pizzas in Chicago are Wapaghetti's in Wheeling and Edwardos. Both tasted awesome.

    I've spend a lot of time in both cities so it took awhile to get the best of both. They're both great, but you have to know where to go. I agree that you like what you grew up with. I live in Rochester NY and think our pizza is best. I've also has pizza in Napoli, which is where pizza was first made with cheese (cheese, tomatoes and basil.....the colors of the Italian flag). New York pizza is more closely related to the pizza from Naples, but New York also had a ton more Italian immigrants than Chicago and is also a much older city, so it only makes sense that their pizza would closely resemble the real deal.

    Chicago Pizza...would never consider it pizza. It is more of a pizza style casserole.

    Neopolitian pizza...now that is pizza...everything else is just pretending.

    If you live in the Chicago area hit up Roberto’s Ristorante & Pizzeria in Elmhurst , IL. It is the best I ever had, and have no doubt you will thank me profusely! I have traveled all over and nothing could ever compare. FYI, they do have a restaurant section that does not list pizza on the menu, but you can still order it, otherwise there is a separate entrance for their take out.

    I feel that if you don't weight a least 300 pound you don't really love pizza at all. Big, thick and gooey, a deep dish with a soft crust with so much cheese it will give you carpal tunnel syndrome if you tried to eat a whole pie at one sitting. Even a big eater could only eat 3 slices, and it's just as good the next morning and a tad into the afternoon while watching the football game on the couch. Sadly there are few places that serve a great pie in Western Canada but I'm looking and eating my way around the country hoping to find that one great place.

    "Chicago Style" seems almost to be a trademark or something (like turbo or lite). The thick crust stuff is good but a VAST MAJORITY of the local neighborhood places make super thin crust sliced into small squares. A place in Warrenville, IL called Al's Pizza (unique name, I know!) makes THE BEST PIZZA in the world, bar none, and it's as thin as paper (when its at its best)!!!!!

    You love what you grew up with. For me, in NJ, it's a fairly thin crust that's doughy under the sauce but gently cracks on the bottom when you fold it. The sauce is the most important part, full of rich tomato flavor. Top it off with a thin layer of mozzarella, barely browned, that oozes an orange grease when folded. Yum! Nothing like it in the world. CHicago style is ok, but far too heavy in the gut.

      Boodls – if you want a truly original and "upside down" pizza try Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder (on North Clark)- they serve a pizza pot pie that is awesome. The first time I went there I thought they were nuts. Pizza served in a bowl? However, one taste of the blend of ingredients and the triple raised Sicilian crust and I was hooked.

    Chicago pizza is among the WORST. OMG, how disgusting and gross to have all that cheese all over it. The world's best pizza is in Naples, Italy. It's thin, lighter, not overwhelmed by wretched fake (American) mozzarella and other awful lard loads, and doesn't leave you feeling like you just consumed an aircraft tire. I just hate pizza that has too much crap on it. In fact the very best is to get it senza formaggio so you can really taste the basil, the veggies, the olive.....

      Totally agree! I'm a Chicago native and am an equal-opportunity pizza eater... I love both deep dish and thin crust – it just depends on how hungry I am. Best deep dish I've ever had was a place that actually closed down in Naperville called Brick Oven Pizza (probably couldn't compete with the Lou Malnati's that was down the street). It had a crispy crust on top and thicker bottom crust and in between was the usual deep dish pizza yumminess. It was divine. Favorite thin crust pizza is definitely Rosati's. Mmmm... pizza.

    Saw the tag line for this story and wondered who could possibly think Chicago pizza was better than NY pizza and when I realized the article was a joke I calmed down and had a nice chuckle.

    Chicago is a GREAT city...EVERYTHING I have encountered in my visits there was top-notch; the people, food, atmosphere, everything. However, the pizza is terrible. I liken it to "Papa john's" or "DiGiorno's" or something. Not ALL NYC pizza is great, but some of the pizzerias we have here are simply amazing. Chicago pizza is really just the result of Chicago's pizza establishment making an attempt to distinguish itself from NYC. I get that but it doesn't work; and that guy on the Travel Channel (Marc Malnati) is beyond annoying.

    If you want to talk steak then I can definitely side with Chi-town but if you want pizza done the right way you need NYC.

Most, if not all, of pizza in St. Louis is super thin crust and made with provel cheese. Can't buy the cheese outside of STL (unless you go online) and its awesome!!

    The best pizza I ever had was just off the south gate at the USAF Academy in C-Springs, CO ... that bad boy was about 2 1/2 inches thick and a mere 9 inches across. I could eat but two pieces and it was absolutely devine. The crust was by no means "dense" and there was not an over abundance of toppings. To me, NY style is like cardboard with ketchup. This is strictly my prefernce, folks, and not a condemnation of a particular style or geographic location.

      Botch is correct. Chicago-style (emphasis on style) is a casserole. Real pizza is thin crust (as made in Italy). But the best pizza ever (IMHO) is New Haven pizza – Modern, Bar, Pepe's, Sally's, etc. Brick oven, thin crust, great sauce, perfect balance of ingredients.

    New yuk may claim to have invented the pizza, but Chicago perfected it and made it a meal! I think it has to do with the personalities. New yorkers are rude and shallow so the pizza is thin and transparent. Chicago is thoughtful and friendly, so their pizza is some thing that you can take your time to have a conversation while eating it.     Chicago style pizza is way better imo than the pizza served in NY. I like the thicker crusts here. Yes Steve Dahl is is still around and can be heard on his daily podcast. He says he can't be on the radio again until his contract with CBS runs out in July.     not from ny or chi but i have to agree with this article!! the thicker/greasier, the better. memphis is trying to come up with a thin style, like st louis - pass. marion's thin style in dayton, oh, is pretty good. youngstown, oh, has more authentic sicilian styles, which are yummy. of course, they also have a large mafia presence, but you didn't hear that from me.

      My husband and I went to Chicago for a conference about 7 years ago and had heard before we left about how great the pizza was. We went to Geno's East and Giordano's on two separate nights. Giordano's, by far, was the best pizza I've ever had in my 42 years! I'm from L.A. and have had NY pizza too when I visited there years before and there is no comparison: Chicago really does have the best pizza! All that pepperoni, sausage and gooey cheese still makes me dream of it all those years later. I have never had another pizza like that again.

    There are TWO kinds of styles in Chicago:
    -Deep dish (which actually has 2 sub-variants: toppings up top or stuffed)
    -Thin crust cut into squares

    The latter is actually the far more common variety amongst Chicagoans when we order pizza, probably because it's delivered faster.

    As for NY style, it's ok, but it's more of a fast food item. I've also seen New Yorkers try to lay **FALSE** claim to New Haven style pizza, which is very, very good stuff and more in line with "real" Italian pizza. It's my favorite type. In fact my favorite pizzeria in Chicago specializes in it.

    Yeah I have to respectfully disagree with this guy. Chicago style has double or even triple the amount of carbs in one slice than a thin crust NY style slice. Pizza is about enjoying the balance of the crust, cheese and toppings – not choking on the 2-3 inch layer of bread inbetween!     I graduated from IIT in Chicago in 1975 and haven't had as good a pizza since. Most places on the East Coast advertise "Chicago Deep Dish Pizza", but it's just a regular pizza with a super-thick crust. A real Chicago deep dish pizza is a real "pie" where the middle is a thick filling of sauce and "toppings" and the cheese is the pie's top crust. For other pizzas, I think the main difference is the quality of the sauce.

    Well, it is a preference that you usually grew up with – and as a kid from Chicago North side – my Dad and I would always make the pizza run to Father and Son's and it was thin crust and I used to get to hold the box on my lap on the ride back home enjoying the tantalizing smell. I started hearing about deep dish in high school – and there used to be a place off Michigan Avenue that we would go to for the deep dish pizza. I went back in the late 90's and was disappointed because the pizza now had way too much sauce on it. Now if you think you have problems try living in Colorado Springs and finding a decent pizza – thick or thin.... and who ever heard of goat cheese and chicken on a pizza for crying out loud. These days if I don't make it myself it always falls short of expectations.

    Geez, people. It's not really a thin-crust versus deep-dish debate. They're completely different so it's a shame they're so often compared. New Yorkers love their pizza. Chicagoans love their pizza. There's room for the two to exist in their own cities.

    Besides, after several trips to New York, I'd only very reluctantly return. I've never been treated more abysmally in my entire life – and I've traveled extensively in Europe and Latin America, speak 4 foreign languages, know how to walk on busy city sidewalks, and would sooner die than don a fanny pack while touring. Parisians are far more courteous than New Yorkers.

    So, I'll gladly eat Chicago pizza with a side of Midwestern courtesy and leave New Yorkers to eat their pizza, which I feel is often reminiscent of cardboard.

      I've done some travelling as well. Born and raised in northeastern US, I went to school in Iowa, and spent some time in Europe. I do not find NYC pizza to be superior to Chicago, and the brusque service somehow makes the food less enjoyable. I have not had a Chicago style pizza I preferred over my own homemade, but it was certainly better than NYC pizza and customer service in Chicago was far superior. I miss Midwestern manners.

    It's a pie, not a pizza. And, it's one that tries to mask a lot of flaws with fat and toppings. A great pizza is one that can stand on its own when stripped down of all the extras. The pizza starts with the crust and it shouldn't be drowned in fat/oil, but featured.

    Any place can make a dense crust, but a thin crust takes craft. Reason why good thin crusts are hard to find outside of NY. Too many toppings just throws of the balance (As does too much cheese – I'm looking at you, Wisconsin!). Limited toppings are best so they complement the crust and cheese, instead of burying them.

    I love thincrust pizza with veggie toppings like mushrooms, peppers and onions.
    Sometimes, I'll get extra creative and add things like chopped scallions, artichoke hearts, capers, and whole basil leaves. I add fennel to get a sausage taste without adding sausage. I went to China 5 yrs ago and the Pizza Huts there add corn to their veggie pizza- it's actually very good!
    When fall starts, I make whole wheat pizza, substitute canned pumpkin for tomato sauce, add whole fresh sage leaves, nutmeg and cracked black pepper, the add Italian four cheese blend. The house smells heavenly!

    With any pizza, I MUST have it well- done, I think it adds to the taste of the pizza. And lots of condiments, too- red pepper flakes, oregano, etc...
    I'm a fan of New York-style pizza but am dying to go to Chicago- it seems like such a cool city- and I will try their pizza then!

      Around here they add corn to something and call it "Santa Fe Style". I haven't seen that on pizza yet. If you really want something with a Southwest kick you add green chile to it. Green chile is good with everything. I have had both Chicago Style and New York Style. Chicago wins hands down. Either kind is hard to get in New Mexico and when you do it's only a poor imitation. Now I'm hungry.

        "Atlanta pizza"? I have lived in Atlanta for decades and my husband was born in Atlanta, and neither of us has ever heard of "Atlanta pizza."Chicago definitely wins in th NY vs. Chicago pizza debate, in my opinion. I've had both in both cities many times.No contest.

        There is no pizza in the South. No Orlando pizza, no Charlotte pizza, no Atlanta pizza!!!! Believe it, I've been all over the south and there is not a good pizza place to be found. Want to make a financial killing. Bring New York or Chicago style to the south and teach them how to cook....

      Thin is just sooo wrong and only fit for Yankees! I remember Uno's, Lou Malnoti's, and Garcia's fondly. At school (undergrad) with Garcia's Pizza in a Pan, one slice was a full meal for poor college kids. It is the only thing I miss about the Midwest but the one's I make are almost as good so I can live with the difference.

        Here is the rub on the NY vs Chicago Pizza argument. Over 75% of the pizza consumed in Chicago is not the famed "Chicago style Pizza" thick crusted, layered..and yes -delicious. Most of the Chicago pizza is very thin crust, cut into small squares, and served all over the city. In fact, mot of the famous deep dish pizzarias also have a thin crust. This thinner, far more popular version of Chicago pizza never seems to want to get into the ring with the famed NY slice of pie. I don't blame the small square either – No way it wins that fight. NYC has it's own thick crusted pie – It's called Sicilian Pizza. Not nearly as popular, and nowhere as good as Chicago deepdish, but it would be a much fairer fight. Once, just once, I would like to see Chicago put forth its best lineup of the thin crusted Chicago square pizza (which outsells its deep dish cousin 5 to 1 in CHI everyday) pizza vs a NY pie. That would be something to see.

        Part of the reason thin-crust pizza is eaten more in Chicago than the deep dish (and delicious) counterpart, is convenience. It takes 45 minutes to an hour to get that amazing pizza, and sometimes, you just don't have that kind of time (or you're too hungry to wait). The other reason in money. It's more expensive to get the deep dish variety, although it's worth it when you continue leftovers!

        But try some D'Agostino's thin crust pizza.... That beats the pants off any NY-style pizza I've ever eaten.

        Garcia's was the absolute best in Normal, IL! I so miss it. Too bad they went under. Their Gut Buster Pizza and a pitcher on Thursday night was a fond memory!!! Still Lou Malnotti's is pretty good! A good spinach and sausage pizza would rock right now!!!!

        Stazya voiced most of what I think is true about why a lot of thin crust is sold in Chicago. I just ate Lou's tonight (sausage, cheese deep dish – delicious!) and would argue their thin crust would be a good contender as well. I also love Chicago's Pizza thin crust! Dag's is good (used to live a block away) and I used it eat it just like NYC style (folded up) but like NYC style the sauce is a little too sweet for it to be a regular pizza choice. If you are looking for what, I think, a solid NYC replica tyy Bacci's pizza by the slice... Huge and less than 5 bucks!
