We are utterly thrilled when readers want to hang out and talk – whether it's amongst themselves or in response to pieces we've posted. We want Eatocracy to be a cozy, spirited online home for those who find their way here.

Consider the daily Coffee klatsch post as your VIP lounge – the primary comments thread for readers who'd like to chat about topics not related to the articles we're running. That way, everyone knows where to find each other, and each post's comments section remains on topic.

Monday. Uuuuuggggghhhhhhhhhh. Make us feel better about that.

I got some jackwagon calling the first lady telling her that she took out a "payday loan" for $2000 in November. Also said she didn't pay it back. Told her she would be going to jail if she didn't send 2 grand today. Pretty sure this is a scam, for a couple of reasons:
        1. We only have one account, and there was never a deposit for that much.
        2. Noone would give us a loan for that much.
        3. A legitimate company would not (should not) threaten jail, and would not require it immediately when it supposedly only a little over 30 days old.
The First lady, however, is terrified and I am trying to calm her down.

        January 10, 2011 at 2:46 pm | Reply
      • wendy

definitely a scam. take the number/acct info she's supposed to send the cash to and call your local PD with the info. i've heard about this scam in recent days...

One of my tenants just directed me to this:
        http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre18.shtm

Anotehr thing to consider is if this is a case of identity theft. Could someone have done this in the first lady's name? Can they provide you with a signed loan agreement, address of branch where it was taken, check copies, etc. All things to consider.

        January 10, 2011 at 2:49 pm | Reply
      • Tazer@Dave the 1st

Pretty sure that's a scam, from the banking industry.

First, it would go to collections. There's no such thing as debtor's jail in the US.
Second, I have never seen a payday loan for more than a couple hundred bucks. I'm relatively certain that you can't get a 2K loan from one of those joints.
Also, any loan would require some sort of paperwork/signature, so if she's not aware of it then it's likely fake.

All good points, and things I was considering. The scary part is that they had her social. I am going to attempt to call them when I get home. I instructed her if they call again to get all info she could and tell them a lawyer will be calling them back.

He may be released today. They think it was due to a ulcer that went into hemmorhage. He's not a drinker, which I gather is the most common cause. She is pretty much a mess, so she is at home today. Thanks for asking.

Btw, thought of you this weekend. Was in the car, and heard "Killer Queen"...:)

Apparently this is the recipe for Stupid Pie.

    4 egg whites, stiffly beaten
    1 cup sugar
    1 tsp. vanilla extract
    28 crackers (saltines or Ritz)
    2 cups Cool Whip
    1 cup chopped pecans
    1 tsp. baking soda

    Directions
Add vanilla and sugar to beaten egg whites. Beat until smooth. Add crackers (coarsley broken) and chopped pecans. Mix well. Pour into an ungreased pie plate. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. Makes 8 servings.

I too will be living the alone life in a week. That is my bright shining light at the end of my stupid weekly tunnel.

Next week I will be tons better since I will have actually been able to get a full nights sleep for the first time in 2 years. I will also not be slowly suffocating to death from the allergies I have to the three devil cats that prowl the apartment.

OUCH! That really sucks with the allergies and the cats. Very inconsiderate.

My last one was what broke me for life. She was nuts. For some reason avoided me like the plauge, and in an 800SF house it was super awkward. And she treated the dogs like doo, had her BF stay over every freaking night... Never again I tell you, never again.

I will now be living alone until I am either married or in a really serious relationship that will most likely lead to marriage. And I will have a pool table.

Sounds like a good plan, I'm at that point too. No roommates, no BF, no plans to live with another human until I get to that "serious relationship" point. Too much hassle.

And, the psycho came back after she moved out and smashed my veggie garden. Dunno what I did to her... crazy!

OOO a pool table! I want one too. I'd also love to have a wet bar. With a wine fridge.

      • The Witty One@Tazer!

A wet bar is the way to go!

Who does that? I mean, I sort of understand smashing things that break but a veggie garden? All you end up with are dirty shoes.

Side note- I worked in a furniture warehouse for a while when I was younger. We got to smash old furniture all the time. Boy does that take the stress out!

        January 10, 2011 at 2:35 pm | Reply
      • Tazer@Wit!

I know, right, who does that? I wasn't aware that we had ended our roommate-ship on bad terms...? It confused the hell out of me and made me super mad, that garden took a lot of work to get going!

One stress reliever I used to partake in when I was a teenager was buying watermelons and throwing them off an 800 foot tall bridge. Totally ridiculous but it was pretty awesome.

And considering I can't get the LL to call back about anything (including a mysterious $65 I supposedly owe them) I doubt it'll be fixed without me busting out my tool bag. Just a couple of thoughts-Did ya check to see if it has batteries? Take them out, wait 5 minutes and put in fresh. Normally on the inside cover it has programming instructions. If it's hard wired-Steal a can of Dust-Off from work and BLOW the crap out of the inside of it. There should be a small glass bubble of Mercury in there so DON"T break it,yet right above it you should see TWO copper contacts. Dust may have settled on those. Spray that also and DON"T shake the can. It's actually a mixture of freon and other stuff. Here's another $65.00 Bill for you.

Grrr! I hate insurance companies! People are afraid of Obamacare and death panels, well guess what? We already have them and they're called Anthem and Wellpoint. "I'm sorry ma'am we won't pay for you to start getting mammograms at age 30 regardless of your family history and the fact that you've had 2 biopsies in the past 3 years. But we will pay for your radical mastectomy, lymph node dissection, chemo and radiation after you find your 5cm lump that has already metastisized." Not to turn this food blog into a political rant but Grrrrrrrrr!

I'm with you...What disturbs me most of all is how gradually we came to accept this economic enslavement. When my generation was growing up, if we got sick, we went to the doctor. That was it. Today, if you are fortunate enough to have a job with insurance, it will only be after meeting hefty deductibles, copays, and the maze of what is/isn't covered. Sad times we live in, to be sure.

And for the record, my Mom survived a double radical in 1985. Still kicking. So I do know from whence you speak.

      • Queen of Everything@Truth

People think when you work in the health care industry that you must have fantastic insurance coverage. Not so, chums. Our insurance costs are less than stellar (the coverage, minus the above gripe, is decent). This year they made such a huge deal about our premiums not going up however in the fine print our deductible went up instead. Usually a higher a deductible means a lower premium but not in the health insurance world. Again I say, Grrrrr!

That stinks! (the snow and the smoke detector) Why do the batteries always go dead at night? Hubs stockpiles batteries like the end of the world is coming so we always have a replacement on hand but something about dragging a dining room chair down the hall at 2am to change it really sets a bad tone for the day.

Good morning! Are you anywhere near Largo? My mother-in-law lives there (she's a snowbird) and I'm trying to gauge how much griping about the cold weather I'm going to have to listen to the next time she calls. For a woman who's lived in Toronto her whole life you'd think she'd be able to handle a little winter weather.

      January 10, 2011 at 8:35 am | Reply
      • s.e.

I am quite close to Largo (20 mins or so). I feel like everyone (myself included) gripes about the weather here because I think it's easier to get acclimated to warmer weather faster. This is a home-spun theory, mind you, but that would explain why people move to Florida, and 2 years later can't handle weather under 72 degrees.

Me thinks Peyton isn't too far above Cro-Magnon man on the evolutionary scale. But on the plus side the Colts can probably us it to view old games if their projector screen ever breaks.
