Lunchtime poll – tipsy does it

We're well aware that y'all don't mind a tipple. Nearly 30,000 of you responded to a poll we posted waaaaayyy back in July of this year asking, "Do you drink alcohol? Not how frequently, why or any of that. Do you or don't you?"

The results:

Yes 85.86%
No 7.89%
I used to, but I don't now. 6.24%

We also know that if you were gonna overindulge, right about now would be the time. The question was "Do you drink more during the holidays?"

You said:

Yes! 'Tis the season to score every free office party and holiday gathering drink I can! It's fun. 22.59%

I up my intake to deal with holiday or family stress. 10.28%

I may indulge a bit more than usual, but that's just because there are so many parties. 31.54%

I'm pretty steady throughout the season – but plan on at least one hangover, probably New Year's Day. 9.37%

My intake doesn't really vary. 15.33%

I may even drink less - too much stuff to do. 3.06%

I probably drink less, but only because I'm around people who don't imbibe. 1.07%

So let's finish out the year with a big ol' bang...

Should your guests choose to overindulge, our readers have a few notions about how to get 'em home and if you do - here's how to make it a tad less ouchy.

This year, as in every year, I will be the designated driver. I have only had alcohol once on New Year's Eve in my 35 years on this planet and that was for the millenium. I was on the beach in Australia and wasn't about to drive any where. I drove around all night long safely and prevented my friends from getting a DUI or an accident or something worse. I am happy to do it and not just on New Year's Eve. I hope everyone is safe every day when they drink! Please don't drive if you are drinking!! Happy New Year!!!

Just us and the kids this year, still made "party food" to get us in the New Years mood, and sat safely at the bar in our man cave to imbibe. No driving, lots of laughs, and lots of beer! Happy New Year!

Had to be at work at 7:30 this morning so it was an early night for me - not that I'm into all the loud party nonsense anyway. Had some wine with dinner, bed by 10. Gotta laugh at some of the nauseated looks on my coworkers' faces this morning, though! It's not worth it to me. I enjoy drinking, but not being drunk.

I'm in the "not drinking – not anymore" category, so you can imagine why New Year's Eve isn't my favorite event. There were plenty of past new year's that I don't remember anything about. It's much better to spend a quiet night at home watching the ball drop. No danger there with the drunk drivers, and much better for your soul not to get wasted. More importantly, it gives some time for reflection and prayer for the new year. Have a great 2011!

"Printapons" is a deal-of-the-day website that is localized if a certain number of people sign up for the offer, then the deal becomes available to all; if the predetermined minimum is not met, no one gets the deal that day.

The kids are sleeping now but earlier we danced to Justin Bieber and had a special dessert. Then a serious game of Operation – off to bed with the kiddos and hubbie and I stayed up to watch a movie on Netflix. A few glasses of wine. I grew up with parents who could not fathom not drinking until intoxicated on New Years Eve, and it hasn't done either of them much good. Call me prudish, but I've never had a fascinating conversation, a moment of great insight or really good sex when I was drunk. I think being drunk is best if you have a lot of problems or emptiness that you're trying to distract yourself about. Or you just do what everyone else does. Just sayin.

Only an undeveloped (say 'juvenile') mind makes a decision to become intoxicated. First of all, if one needs alcohol to "have a good time" or "have fun," one needs to look seriously at their lifestyle. Should one CHOOSE to use alcoholic beverages, one need remember that – in most adults – the liver can process the equivalent of one drink per hour. With this in mind, one can reasonably imbibe at this rate and have no difficulty.

New Year's Eve is a night for irresponsible amateurs, as is St. Patrick's Day, et al. Mature, responsible adults recognize intoxication as loss of control – a signal of alcoholism. Sad so many people look upon drunkenness as mature, adult, ad nauseum. It is none of these!

Its one of those throat things so shots are out of the question anyways, the only way I can officially feel drunk lol. Plus I don't turn 21 till March and I really dont feel like playing the same old 'enter the bar illegaly' game that I've been playing for the past four or so years (Still haven't memorized the zip code on the fake ID i bought up in Toronto, and I think it says I'm like 25 now).

Plus not going to drive after nightfall, since I don't want to be in accident with a drunk driver. I'm just gonna keep working to decriminalize Cannabis sativa/indica in the upper Midwest (IA MN IL WI) in 2011. Enough is enough! Modern Prohibition must end. Americans, lets live happily and considerately in the land of the free in '11 ! Have a Happy New Year. Be safe!

Tell that to Jesus. He made some pretty fine wine at that wedding in Cana. And there's that Psalm that mentions the "wine that maketh glad the heart of man." And St. Paul advised Timothy to take a little wine for his stomach. Moderation is the key. Drinking alcohol itself is not wrong, drunkenness is another story altogether..

personally I think alcohol is the greatest evil in the USA, with the exception of Sarah Palin's new DVD box set of her new reality show. Alcohol should be made illegal (again) and other, happier less violence-inducing forms of substance usage be made available legally. I still don't know what I'm doing...everybody is inviting to go get wasted, but drinking has lost it's appeal to me (hangovers are so not worth it)!!!!

No celebrating, no going out, and no drinking for us. We might go have a yummy Vietnamese dinner later this afternoon, though. (Denver has great Vietnamese food.) We are happy to see the new year, but our complex feelings about the past year and the coming one are personal. Overall, 2010 was a good year for us, and we expect 2011 to be better. Our best wishes for the New Year to everyone reading this. - Leonore and David Dvorkin, Denver, CO (dvorkin.com)

We are staying home this NYE, for the first time I think. We typically go out and either take a cab or have a designated driver (usually me). I don't like feeling bad the next day. But, since we are home, I'll probably have a glass of wine with dinner and maybe a glass or two of champagne. Dinner will be better too. I've decided I can make a better dinner, with half the cost, if we just stay home. I've had too many horrible restaurant experiences in this town lately to spend too much money on a mediocre meal.

    Getting.

    Tanked.

Then getting driven home where I can peacefully unload the entire contents of my stomach and fall into a dreamy sleep for the next day.

  80. americas war on drugs?

america loves to do recreational drugs, the poll doesnt surprise me and neither does the size of the alcohol section in the grocery store or the 1.5 million establishments that sell the recreational drug alcohol in this county.

I used to party hard in college. I'm done now. I'm sick of wasting the entire next day. People will say there are ways to cure it, but in reality, there isn't. I've drank enough to know what to do and how to do the next day, and nothing works. I'm not saying it wasn't fun, I've just outgrown it.

You can party, just don't party hard. Yes, if you drink the max you are going to hurt the next day. Instead enjoy a couple drinks, no need to go blitz crazy. Wake up next morning just fine.

That's boring. Blacking out results in a fun game of detective the next day. Finding out who I offended, what I broke, who I drunk dialed.. it's been a cherished ritual that's kept going long after college.

It's not that I don't drink at all, I just rarely do it and don't particularly enjoy it. I will be spending the New Year with friends and family who do not really drink much either. I've only had two or three alcoholic drinks all year, and never been anywhere near drunk. What's the point? Life can be so much fun without it, and there are so many disadvantages to copious drinking.

Was with a friend of mine years ago when he got arrested for a DUI. It was more than enough for me. Between the fine, the court costs, the alcohol classes, and the increase in insurance premiums, I think I will pass. I don't mind a drink at home, but only if I am not driving. If we go anywhere, it is likely within walking distance.

Sadly, I tried to get drunk to drown the stress of family, unemployment, and the waiting...to hear if I might have a job at the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough money to purchase enough alcohol to even get a decent buzz....
