Midnight snack on Air Force One

Food in the Field gives a sneak peek into what CNN's team is eating, and the food culture they encounter as they travel the globe. Today's photo contributor Suzanne Malveaux covers the White House and is the primary substitute anchor for The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.

Reason seventy beeeellliiooon why you should be following The 1600 Report White House blog: Suzanne Malveaux filed this photograph of a midnight snack aboard the Presidential aircraft.

While en route to Asia, photojournalist Mark Walz had feasted upon chicken-fried steak and scrambled eggs for breakfast, the overnight shift on President Obama's Lisbon-bound flight was treated to a turkey, swiss, & bacon on wheat with tomato soup and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc.

Beats the heck out of a Hot Pocket, huh? According to the White House, Air Force One is equipped with two food preparation galleys that can feed 100 people at a time and contrary to popular belief (or at least that of some commenters) American taxpayers are not picking up the tab for "freeloading" journalists. News outlets pay full fare for their reporters and photojournalists to travel with the President.

He ain't much good fer nuttin as prez. but I bet he is getting some pretty good blackque poontung CNN benefits...like he wuz tappin on that Indian or Muzlim princess Zan Vergee before they kicked her off the station and now he is bangin Suzanne Malvox...pretty sure of that!

I have to wonder if the first president had not been George Washington (a wealthy plantation owner with a slew of house servants) if the White House would have been a log cabin in Paducah or Cape Girardeau and a midnight snack would have been ham'n'beans' n' cornbread or cat fish and hush puppies. One thing's for sure: Obama likes the good life for himself even if he wants to take it away from everyone else and force us to live in Cabrini Greens or some other "project."

I bet they don't have to pay $10 for a tuna sandwich at the airport like the rest of us fools.

    November 25, 2010 at 8:05 pm |
    • nytw

That sandwich probably cost America $10,000. But the liberals don't care they can just raise taxes to pay for it.

I wish I got something half as good looking as that when I have to eat on a plane. And the sad thing is that I'm generally paying for it.

Perhaps CNN could Aldo pick up the costs for a proofreader or a journalist who could write. You left out the word "not". Gosh, these "journalists" are such idiots.

    November 23, 2010 at 7:26 pm |
    • Kat Kinsman

Aaaand a lovely pre-Thanksgiving to you. (BTW, who is this "Aldo"? You didn't mean "also," did you? Typos! Heaven forfend!)

We all have finger fumbles now & then. Doesn't make us idiots – just human and occasionally exhausted and understaffed.

"contrary to popular belief (or at least that of some commenters) American taxpayers are picking up the tab for "freeloading" journalists" So...are the tax payers paying, or aren't they?

    November 23, 2010 at 5:11 pm |
    • rtlhaz

we pay for everything...that's the american way......mom ,apple pie and taxes.....not exactly in that order..what we need is more cow bell !!!!!!!!

      November 23, 2010 at 5:15 pm |
  12. Kevin H

I've never really understood the ignorance of Americans. They say all sorts of things that make no sense. The President pays for all meals that are not related to state business – always has – always will. Jefferson nearly went broke with all the expenses. The journalists that travel with the President – regardless of the travel – must pay full fare and all expenses – there is no freeloading. If the President brings along family the President pays for that family – EVERYTHING – the price of the ticket, the price of the food, the lodging. The American taxpayer has never paid these expenses. Good grief it's our own President people – get a clue!

"...American taxpayers are picking up the tab for "freeloading" journalists. News outlets pay full fare..." That should either read taxpayers are NOT picking up the tab or News outlets DO NOT pay full fare. Funny how the cost of the fare was left out...

Did you perhaps mean to write "American taxpayers are NOT picking up the tab for "freeloading" journalists"?

    • MARK

I thought I was the only one who caught that. Had to read it a few times before I realized I was right! Good catch

      November 23, 2010 at 12:39 pm |
    • cymom611

I think if you read it as "... popular belief THAT American taxpayers ..." then put a comma after that sentence, it makes sense. Though I'm not a fan of the word THAT, as it's used too frequently, they should have placed it in the sentence this time to avoid confusion.

      November 23, 2010 at 6:54 pm |
    • Kat

Or maybe they just needed a comma, instead of a period, between that and the sentence following it.

Yeah, was just telling RichardHead how people were flipping out on the TSA article, but that's nothing compared to the the Chicken Fried Steak. Thought it was reasonable as well.

HAHAHA You all are missing the BIGGEST TYPO – that idiot writer said "American taxpayers ARE picking up the tab" hahahahahaha idiot

      November 23, 2010 at 3:25 pm |
      • Jerv

Does a simple typo justify calling someone an idiot? I think not.

I was just having fun with it.

LOL! You got that right. Go Jdizz-dawg!

I was reading some of the posts about TSA and some people were just flippin' out. Crazy.

        November 23, 2010 at 11:36 am |
      • Truth@RichHead, Jerv, SirBiddle

Malveaux is pretty hittable, but the one I have always liked in Karen Macginnes. Even after twenty years, that lady gets better with age.
