Green acres, or at least the South Lawn, is the place to be - especially if you're First Lady Michelle Obama.

The First Lady spent Wednesday afternoon picking pumpkins, turnips and sweet potatoes from the White House kitchen garden with students from Tubman and Bancroft Elementary Schools.

The harvest was part of Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign, which aims to combat childhood obesity.

Good for her! It is great that Michelle is out there teaching children where food actually comes from, how to garden, and a little bit about the workings of nature. Most children can hardly be torn from their video game, let alone go out and experience the world around them.

Sometimes I don't know why I read the comments here when there are so many hateful people who will criticize anything. There is SERIOUSLY something wrong with you if you feel the need to go off on someone harvesting a garden. To the people like that racist guy at the top, grow up! Our world doesn't need people like you!

Gardening with children is a great experience in science, patience, and for those Bancroft kids, the chance of a life time to visit the White House in a way none of us never will. Every First Lady supports a cause. Nancy: Say no to drugs, Laura: literacy, Michelle: healthy eating. I am proud her efforts in this issue. Some of you people need to stick to the issue, this article isn't about her husband or her travels, it's about HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES.

Kudos to our first lady! It is obvious she will attract those who want to minimize her efforts however, teaching children about eating wholesome food that you can grow and how that all works is a great experience...to treasure. If we are ever to get a grip on the downward spiraling of our beloved country it will be by the efforts of those who respect the production of food.

This is silly on so many levels. Growing food is easy when you have 30 staff members to weed your garden. In addition, note that none of the greens have one single blemish........can you say pesticides? Either they just top dressed the whole garden with fresh compost or someone is using glyphosate. And what is the deal with those green tomatoes in October? If the the Whitehouse cant get them ripe it just shows how incompetent they are

I think gardening is a great thing to teach our youth, but, and there is a but, who thinks that the First Lady had ANYTHING to do with the caring of the garden? I'm sure they have hired help that actually planted the garden, weeded it, fertilized it, etc. If it was really setting the example of all the work that goes into it, I'd be all for it. But if it's just a photo opportunity it seems rather disingenuous. It should have been a series of events. First the planting, then one or two times working to keep the garden nice...THEN the harvest. The plants don't just magically appear in perfect rows without weeds.

I for one do not give any special significance to the first lady position, however, I do think this message is a good one- grow your own vegetables is wonderful way for children to become more involved with the food they eat and less reliant on store bought stuff. I would be interested to know if she tended the garden entirely herself or had others do it for her? If she had others do it- then I would respect her less. However, the garden is still nice. Just not 'hers.'

Living in DC in the 70's, I lived through Lady Bird Johnson planting Tulips – and listened to people jab at her for mis spending the tax payers $'s but you know – she made what seemed like War Torn DC at the time (After reserection city!) into a beautiful peaceful place to be. And that city needed something bright and pretty and calming for a change.

Why do we care who tended the garden- there is a purpose to the land where there could have been just grass and weeds! And Michelle is setting the example for generations to come. The experience of a life time AND – it might just stick in the minds of these kids when they get older and they teach their kids and so on. Farming is hard work – fresh air and fresh food. Beats sitting in front of the TV playing mindless video games (although there is the mind hand coordination thing there).

All Thanks to a special Lady named LadyBird. I must correct you though,It's hand-eye coordination, something The New York Yankees lack!

I live in NYC and have recently seen an awesome amount of gardens sprouting up in this concrete jungle. What a refreshing sight. I joined a communtiy garden near my home and get much pleasure from growing my own veggies. Some of these gardens here in the city have full grown apple and peach trees, along with grape vines and an abundants of herbs, flowers, and trees that are not suppose to live in this climate...but they do! I appreciate that Mrs Obama pushed this garden business. Some kids do not know where veggies come from. Kids think that veggies come from the supermarkets. There is nothing more satisfying than growing you own food. I have managed to preserve and freeze vegetables that will take me through the winter......grown in NYC. AHHHHHHH! What a treat. More power to you Michelle, I love you for all that you do.

I am 100% Republican and think it is great what she is doing. What a great thing for our First Lady to be showing the next generation that you can go out and actually grow your own food. Makes me want to go out and show my kids, something that I have not done yet.
Please don't put all Republican's in the same gene pool. Some of us are actually intelligent, proud Americans. Now come 2012 may God be with us and get him out of office!!!

The only thing that upsets me is hearing more nonsense about "..setting a good example." JHC, are we really this impressionable? Does anyone here really need to see celebrities and political figures doing something to want to do it as well?

These are really life long lessons for these kids and their generation that cannot be fully measured. What a wonderful example for kids to get out and experience the earth, where our food comes from, and how to make healthy choices. Awesome. I congratulate the First Lady on this amazing initiative!!!

I am neither a Dem or a Liberal, but it would be good to respect our President and First Lady, whether we agree with them or not.

So true. The hate that is being spewed by the Republicans has become a knee-jerk reaction. Where will this lead? How will it end? Seems strikingly similar to Natzi Germany and Taliban-like to me!

Wow... I guess you were happy with the last administration that ran us into the ground. I would imagine that you don't have any children or you would see the benefits of doing this with them. As Heidi said... Grow up.

Is it not important for the First Lady to give a good example to the Nation on how to care for both the Earth and ourselves? Those in the public eye can do alot to transform thinking about healthy living, especially in our young people.
Both Michelle and Barack exercise every day. Their focus is not on the wealthy, but every citizen.

Why don't you get on a plane and head off to a distant place one way. Maybe find a better attitude before you return.
We care what she does because she is the First Lady and a outstanding citizen. What about you?

Hey Mike, while I may not be oblivious to your entitlement to your own opinion as enshrined in the Constitution of your great country,I sure take great offence and concern to the fact that you belittle my great country Kenya..... First things first,I do not give a dime about you perceived vendetta against FOTUS and her husband but I think the last time I checked, they were legitimate citizens of the United States of America and that is why they are the current tenants at 1600 PA.Just leave Kenya out of any future constructive criticism you may have about the President of the United States.Oh, and Anjelika Bertrand,I appreciate your attempt to chastise Mike however, you have to get your facts up to date because your inaccurate assumptions of poverty in Kenya are really uncalled for as they are unecessary... I mean,we also have middle class demographics that were also hit hard by the economic meltdown in Kenya as well as Union members e.t.c

Legitimate citizens?, were did you checked, please tell me, Michelle I don't care, but Barack never showed any legal document of his bearth place, for me he is a Kenian citizen, his bearth certificate was shown prowdly by president of Kenia.

Is there none kind? What this First Lady has done is make us all aware that even a small flower garden can be turned into a lovely garden for green fresh veggies. Nothing more refreshing than a freshly picked salad with a grilled chicken breast on top. Stop being so vicious.
