Lunchtime poll – celebrity chefs

I don't mean to brag or anything, but I totally have Paula Deen's used chewing gum sitting here on my desk. When the butter-chugging celeb chef stopped by CNN on Friday, she parked the sticky wad on an issue of her new magazine before going on camera. It wasn't until I went to flick what I thought was a kernel of popcorn into the trash that I realized I was in possession of this masticated marvel.

Nearby colleagues advised, "eBay!" (we sit near CNN Money, see), and I laughed off their suggestion until later that evening and into the next day, I saw people - reasonable, everyday, New Yorkers and Americans alike - pumping out greasy lucre to chow down quartered burgers and mini tacos while trying to catch a glimpse of Guy Fieri's frosted tips amidst the throng.

The New York City Wine & Food Festival drew sold-out crowds to demos, talks, tastings, dinners and parties around the city this weekend, ranging from free and $20 all the way up to $200+. The academically (and food fetishistically) inclined could select from a wide and fairly smashing menu of seminars about the meaning of "local," how to go organic, and the science of restaurant buzz, as well as classes on wine and cheese pairing, sake tasting and artisanal goat cheese.

A casual observer, however, might note that the most heavily attended (and pricey) events entailed queueing for small plates from restaurants around town while craning for a view of a Food Network star. Doesn't matter which one - they all got mobbed.

Oh – and I did indeed end up a couple of feet away from Mr. Fieri at Bobby Flay's Tacos & Tequila event on Saturday evening. He was shuffle-dancing to "It's Tricky" by the Beastie Boys while his entourage of goateed doppelgängers fended off the advances of over-served, under-clad ladies seemingly hungry for a chunk o' Guy. It was...um...I put down my taco and moved on.

(And seriously – what should we do with the DeenGum? Toss it? eBay with proceeds to charity? Suggestions welcome.)

I've paid to see Anthony Bourdain, but the program had very little to do w/ him being a chef and was more focused on his travels and his philosophy on being a hunbled and gracious guest of the world... The guy's led a hell of an interesting life.

You need another option, "If they are cooking and I get to see them occasionally pop out of the kitchen to greet folks"

As a native Ohioan, I am still planning to go to one of Michael Symon's restaurants in Cleveland one of these days...come on he's an Iron Chef! I'm honored that he's from the same crappy part of the world as me!

"It's Tircky" is Run DMC, not the Beastie Boys

I left many pieces of gum under my desk along with many bodily fluids all over the Atlanta office. Wanna put those on eBay too?

I can't afford MCdonalds, not about to pay to see someone cook food that I can't eat

I would most certainly pay $50 to be able to taste and judge the food on just about any Top Chef challenge.

It would depend who gets the money – a favorite charity of the chef's or the chef

I wouldn't pay a ton to see my favorite celebrity chef, but if I could go and eat some of their food and they give a little speech and only have to pay about double what I would for the same food in a normal restaurant, I definately would.

HollywoodBandB.com could be the place to have one. Spectacular, and a commercial range to boot.
