Office politics can be a messy business - especially when it comes to hardworking folks and a packed break room fridge. producer Jo Parker poses today's lunchtime poll question. (And would you stop swiping her soda, please?!?)

I worked in an office with a lunch thief. She did not eat the lunches, she destroyed them, dumped the drinks down the sink, stole keys, etc. She was a mean, unhappy bitch. She pulled that stuff on all the workers. We had her number and knew what she was doing. Everyone kept their desk locked, password protected the computers and kept lunches in desk drawers. The boss thought she was perfect and wouldn't help stop it. May she live very long because she is miserable.

I then call whoevers lunch it is into my office and eat it right in front of them while talking business. They don't even realize its their lunch!! hahahahahaha hey, I gotta eat, and a good laugh along with it is just a bonus

I have had a few frozen dinners stolen before. Drives me insane. I worked at a call center and there were some really shady people working there, so it really didn't surprise me. At my current job, a coworker (in a different office location) brought in some chicken fettuccine alfredo one day. Someone went in there, picked out all of the chicken, and left the rest. Gross, like she was really going to eat the noodles after that!

All of this pathetic rhetoric and holier than thou attitude makes me wonder if I shouldn't step things up a notch. Oh, what's that? I already have. You can follow my exploits and read my victims' outrage in real time on the popular micro-blogging service called Twitter, maybe you've heard of it? That's right, I've gone public and all of you copycat thieves may as well pick a new crime because I am not going anywhere. LB

Use an insulated lunch bag and keep it at your desk. NEVER eat food that comes from a communal fridge if you don't want people stealing your stuff. I would rather starve than take anyone else's food - I just don't trust people to be "hygienic" so who wants their germs.

People steal lunches at my place of work all the time. So far I've had a frozen dinner, a homemade bowl of spaghetti, a pb&j , and half of a bagel.. yes 1/2 of a bagel and left me the other half like I really wanted it after they pulled it apart.

I work the over night shift at my place of employment so there are not too many people around. Anyways one of my co-works saw a SECURITY GUARD from our building going through a random departments refrigerator looking for something to help himself too. My co-worker saw him look in both directions before he went into the fridge so we know that he was looking for something other than his. To make matters worse my co-worker saw the same guard doing this again just a few minutes later.

I usually lace my lunch with LSD or Ex-Lax. Whenever it goes missing I know I've got overtime coming my way!

The way to do it and not be labelled a jerk is to keep an eye on what's in the fridge. Then, when you notice something tasty has been sitting there a really, really long time without anyone's name or initials sharpied on it, you ask everyone within earshot if it's theirs. If everyone says no, and they don't know who it belongs to, it's free game in my book! Frankly, if you don't put your name on it and you forget you have it in there, then you're not being a responsible fridge user and that's the price you pay!

but seriously stealing a person's lunch is a very cave manish thing to do. It's primitive and boorish.
Why would you even risk it? Who knows what's in it... what that person's house is like and how they prepare their meals. Sometimes it can be tempting because what someone else has can be quite enticing... but really, stealing food especially in the work force is ridiculous. Some of us can't just leave our job to go and get another lunch because there is no one to cover for us. And other times it may be because we're just plain broke. It's very childish, rude, mean and just down right bumish to steal someone's food. Go buy your own. This isn't Call of the Wild... we're all human... we don't need to steal from our co-workers!!! The very fact that you have co-workers might imply that you at least have a job and the money to buy yourself at least one lunch if you don't have enough for more...

Yeah I had a salad once that had gotten taken. It was a good one, too.
The strange thing about it... I work at a hotel with like only 20 other people on staff, and that's during the day.
I worked a 3-11 shift and left my salad in the fridge overnight, because I had to be back in the morning at seven.
I trust the night auditor didn't take it because she is a very trustful lady. The security guard doesn't go back into our office. It was all very strange. My salad just disappeared. I even checked another fridge... I even peeked in the trash can but there was no evidence it had been eaten over night and than thrown away... my boss had her lunch stolen once, and because she knew what it was like, she bought me another salad. It was so nice of her.

My husband had that problem. Finally enough people complained that the company he works for said if they caught anyone stealing food from the fridge, they'd be fired. Problem solved, no more thefts.

One hopes that Jink's alter ego has a sharp nose, capable of detecting Ex-Lax, pencil shavings, Murine, my son's buggers, etc. You silly kitty! ;) BTW, I bake a mean macaroon, I'll leave them on the common counter for ya!

One way to stop people from stealing your pizza...anchovies! I love them, but of course 99% of the population hates them. Just get anchovies and nobody will touch it!

    September 30, 2010 at 6:35 pm |
    • Don't Laugh

Can you even still get anchovies? I've never even found a place that offers them as a topping.

No, most pizza places I've been to have them. Some may not if very few people order them. The Pizza Hut near me does not. And the grocery store does have them...also, anchovy paste in a tube, like toothpaste. Sounds pretty gross, but still quite tasty to squeeze a dollop on pizza, pasta, whatever.

yes I did once. I worked overtime one night and needed a little boost so I took a redbull. I knew who it belonged to and I left her a note about the missing can. I replaced it the next day with a 4 pack.

I found the cure a long time ago: cream cheese and pencil shavings sandwiches and Murine in the drink.
When the culprit had diarrhea all day so I knew who was stealing the food, we started putting cayenne pepper in his sandwiches when he was out of the room. Even HE figured it out.

Use to work with a guy in state service who was frequently at the office after hours, didn't "have the time" to walk out of the building to buy himself dinner (and his assignments gave him an elistist attitude), so he would steal from the clerical's lunches, sodas, and Ben and Jerry's Peace Pops. The clericals tried talking with him, but it didn't stop until they got management involved. Hopeless little fuse. A thief is a thief, no matter what the excuse/attitude.

LOL! I had a large supply of Snickers bars leftover from halloween and they were in the communal freezer. As it happens, I HATE Snickers bars, which is why I bought them, so I wouldn't be tempted to eat them. A colleague who had to stay all night to get a presentation done was starving at about 3 a.m. and went searching for something to keep her able to work, she found them in the freezer and she ate half of them. The next day she came to me grovelling in apology and offered to buy me a replacement supply. I said Please Don't!!! And explained that I hate them and was just keeping them to get rid of at some other 'function.' In general taking anyone's food is wrong, wrong, wrong, but when I was working on my Ph.D. I had to pull many all-nighters and I know just what it's like.....and in this case, no harm was done. She treated me to a latte the next morning and I called that 'even.' At least I actually like coffee :)

I used to work for a LARGE, GLOBAL telecom corporation & I thought someone was stealing my lunch. Other co-workers used to come in with their kids' fundraising campaigns & you could buy a card from Chick-fil-a or other places for buy one, get one free options. EVERY time I'd try to use one of my coupons, I'd eat one sandwich & then leave the other in the frig for the next day. Invariably, the next day, my sandwich would be gone. I'd be LIVID thinking someone stole it & ate it. Then I found out, this one dude, an alcoholic, would go through the frig & THROW AWAY EVERYTHING IN THE FRIG! Including people's TUPPERWARE! it was long before glad ware. WTF??? He didn't even eat, but he was cleaning out the frig??? go get another drink, but leave my food alone! >:-(

When I was in college, I'd often bring food from home and put it in the fridge of the card key-restricted computer science student lounge so I could eat while coding in the labs at night. Twice, I had my food stolen by other students, despite there being a vending machine down the hall. I was furious and wrote a scathing email to all of the computer science undergrads, condemning them for being so cheap and petty. No one stole food from the fridge for the rest of the year.

I cannot believe some of the posts here. How does a subject about lunch become about liberals and politics!!!! I've seen this in different articles that have nothing to do with politics...and of course the comments are as idiotic as the ones who write them because there is no point and no subject, it's just attacking whoever is not on "our side".... get a life people...

I don't steal lunches. I like the food and put it back. That way, I can get all the taste, but no one even notices.

The most I ever took from the work room fridge was some little packets of butter left over from a big confab meeting. So I didn't actually take anything from a person
