(CNN Wire Staff) Federal and state experts have declared Mississippi oysters safe to eat after the oil spill that gushed for months in the Gulf of Mexico.

The state's oyster season is closed during the summer and reopens in September or October.

"Like all the seafood samples collected and tested from Mississippi territorial waters since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, our Mississippi oyster tissue samples have undergone rigorous testing, and have been proven to be well below levels of concern for hydrocarbons," said Dale Diaz, fisheries director for the state Department of Marine Resources.

The agency conducted the tests with the state Department of Environmental Quality, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The report was released Wednesday.

The spill started after a Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded April 20, killing 11 workers.

flat out lie. did they test for methane? hydrogen sulfide? benzene? the two lovely types of corexit which will kill the hell out of you? what about the lab testing in florida where non-oiled gulf water was collected and when brough near a flame, EXPLODED. the us govt and their peasants in the corporate media(this 'news' source especially), from the beginning of the spill, covered up their poisonous footprints.

How can the government say that Gulf seafood is safe to eat when they are not doing mercury, heavy metal testing which is what crude oil contains? These statements help BP Oil and are not that convincing to the American public as they have been fooled before. The egg scandal is due to the lack of government inspections-plain and simply they fell down on their sworn duty and are therefore favoring corporate farms. Buy local, buy at health food stores, buy at local markets as it would be far healthier than buying factory foods.

Yeah, I'd like to see these officials eat them first. Then we wait awhile, test them for this stuff. Repeat like they taught you in science class. If they come out clean everytime, then pass me the tobasco and lets shoot some oysters.
