Life as a cereal freak

My name is Sarah, and I am a cereal junkie. I just can’t stop after one bowl.

If I didn’t know any better, I’d mash flakes, loops, clusters and oats into my face until I blacked out. Won’t you lend me some sugar?

There is something about the consistent nature of cereal – the ease and accessibility of it in a crunch. There are no Trix up its sleeve: Bowl. Spoon. Cereal. Milk. Eat. Repeat.

I’ve heard the first step to recovery is denial, but I would go so far as to stake claim that cereal is indeed the perfect food - an (apple) jack of many trades. You can eat it for breakfast, for lunch, for dinner, for dessert. It's good for mid-afternoon snacking, late-night noshing and on-the-go munching.

For many, our first encounter into solid food territory is even an “O” of some sort. We gum wide-eyed, curiously confused and satiated by the grainy goodness that our parents just airplane swooped into our mouths.

Cereal was there for me early mornings before preschool as milk dribbled down my chin and my Velcro-shoed feet dangled from the kitchen table chair. It was there for me on family road trips, in single-serving boxed form, when the hotel breakfast buffet was otherwise a wasteland of chafing dishes. It forever fueled me during college all-nighters while I burned the candle at both ends.

Now, I'm not talking any of those New Age, sticks-and-berries, fiber chunked varieties. They simply just won’t do. Pass the Honey Nut Cheerios, Rice Krispies, Frosted Flakes and Lucky Charms. Me and the Cap’n - Crunch, that is - make it happen. As an informed eater, cereal is my omnivore’s dilemma - but it's not just me.

There are currently 36,542 people that “like” the Cereal page on Facebook. Even more astounding, 355, 316 people “like” a page entitled, “EATING CEREAL EVEN THOUGH IT ISN'T BREAKFAST TIME!!” In the popular sitcom "Seinfeld," cereal boxes were notably and constantly displayed on Jerry Seinfeld's kitchen shelf. Heck - there are even a couple of restaurant franchises, like The Cereal Bowl and Cereality, dedicated to the art of the breakfast bowl.

Just goes to show you, I won’t have to Kix the addiction alone. Now, where did I put my spoon?

When I was pregnant with my second child, my primary craving was cereal. I simply could not go to sleep at night if I did not have a bowl. Well, that did not leave me just because the baby was born. That "baby" is 28 years old and I still prefer to eat cereal as my late-night snack. Keeps me regular, too.....

I get at least 3 or 4 boxes of cereal every other week and I still run out occasionally.
But I found a new cereal that is just fantastic...Cupcake Pebbles...they taste like rice krispy treats cereal but even better.

Oh, man, so glad to learn I'm not alone! I LOVE cereal! My husband makes fun of me, but it's my go-to if I'm hungry but don't want anything special. What's not to love? It's fast and easy, and just one little bowl and spoon to fit into the dishwasher. Plus some are actually relatively healthy, though they aren't usually as yummy. My cereal obsession du jour is Special K Chocolately Delights.

@ V Saxena: Some cereals, especially the "healthy" ones, actually have high protein counts. Certainly it's not as much as a chicken breast or a ribeye, but pretty substantial for a grain food.

Not a big cereal fan. As a weight-lifter, I avoid it because there's no protein benefit. Mind you, it tastes delicious, but I'd rather go with like rice and black beans. That's just me, though!

    What is your BMI?

Eat what you want but don't whine if you get fat.

Eat in moderation of 'good' foods – heavy on veggies and fruits – get exercise and live well.

Love cereal! Love frosted mini-wheats but can't find the big bite kind anymore. All they have is the bite size in the various flavors – not bad, but why not the big bites? I mean, why me. Just because I have to have that size do they make all those tiny ones and mess with my favorite? Must be a conspiracy or somethin. Oh, and can't stand Grape Nuts – tastes like gravel. Oh's are good, but can't find those anymore. Also love Cracklin Oat Bran.

What gets me through the day is caffeine and cereal. The Red Cross attendants never laugh when I say that my blood type is "bold roast, 2 Splenda, french vanilla creamer," but I still think I'm a riot. Otherwise my day starts and ends with a bowl (or four) of Kashi, Reeses Puffs, Chex, Lucky Charms...whatever is within arm's reach. Not picky. Just hungry. It's like crack.

Speaking of crack, I've always wanted to try it...twenty-something lifestyle has me running on 4hrs of sleep each day. But let's face it, I went to school for business. If a dime bag costs $80, how many boxes of cereal could be bought instead?

Well cereal is at least vegetarian, so that's a big improvement over fried eggs, fried sausage, fried potatoes, and toast greasy with margarine. However, most boxed cereals could be replaced by a bowl of Styrofoam peanuts over which you sprinkle a small box of sugar and some cocoa powder. From a nutritional standpoint, most cereal is a box of garbage. Marketing it to children should be classified as child abuse.

Hold on, are we talking hot or cold cereal? Either way I prefer to have it for supper.

Unless it's as hot and muggy out, I'll eat hot cereal...oatmeal and/or grits and/or cream of wheat (different flavors). If I have shredded wheat (frosted or not) it's always hot.

Cold-I mix Apple Jacks and Fruit Loops OR Rice Krispies and Raisin Bran and Corn Flakes and Frosted Flakes (any three combo). Left over milk? No problem, my cat Samantha will just finish it up.

The author only seems to mention cold cereals. I eat oatmeal almost every morning. Use a half cup of quick, not instant; mix in some dried fruit like raisins, craisins, prunes, or dried cherries (THE BEST!); freshly-ground flaxseed; and a bunch of cinnamon; pour boiling water over everything and let it sit for five minutes; and you have the food of the gods. I just use boiling water and don't actually cook it because I make tea at the same time in the morning and this way I don't mess up another pot.

Ever notice the "good" (and surgary sweet) cereals have 2 words in there titles...Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, Cap-n-Crunch,Lucky Charms etc...(notable exception "Trix" of the old days with the added sugar, of course). Those single word cereals...Total, Wheaties, Cherrios, etc....oh, they are ok from time to time. But you can beat those 3 or more worded cereals. They usually don't stay longer than 2 days in my pantry...Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cap-n-Crunch w/Crunch Berries, and two of my personal favorites of all time...Chocolate Frosted Flakes and Chocolate Lucky Charms. Good times!...Yes!...Good Times!

So happy to see so many other cereal junkies here. I've been eating Kellogg's Frosted Mini Wheats for at least two years now. Exclusively. Recently I've added a bowl or two of Honey Nut Cheerios once or twice a week.. The milk must be 1% organic. I buy at Costco, 2-3 72 oz boxes of cereal, and 3 gallons of milk. This will last me about 3-4 weeks.
I do go out to eat, but rarely, and I only nibble at my meal, and usually bring it home for the dog, or BF.

Cereal obsessions seem like a recipe for diabetes, carbo addictions are mostly ignored in favor of alcohol drugs & cigs, but carbos can be very damaging to your health, let alone your physique.

I am almost 50 years old. My husband of 22 years has never understood why we have so many boxes of cereal in the cabinet. I am a cereal junkie. While I try to be good by eating Go Lean Crunch or Multi Bran Chex, I prefer Trix, Froot Loops, Corn Pops, etc. My all-time favorite is Kaboom which is SO HARD to find!! It's like Lucky Charms, in a way, with fruit flavored clown faces and little marshmallow thingies. And I don't stop at one bowl either, with any cereal. So many give me a sore mouth, too, just like Scholar said above, but I don't care. I pack cereal for snacks at work, eat a handful when I want something sweet, eat it for supper, and before bed. And sometimes I get so excited by that new box of cereal that I bought that I can't wait for breakfast! Cereal is one of life's pleasures for me.

Best two cereals on Earth: Cascadian Farms' "Multigrain Squares" -and- Food For LIfe's "Ezekiel 4:9 Golden Flax" (I know, and I'm not religious). Both are best when first drizzled with honey and organic raisins added on top, and then let to sit in milk. Let the Multigrain Squares sit 5 minutes, the Ezekiel a full 10.

I, too, am a cereal fiend, though I try to stick to the whole grains and whatnot. I've also discovered this brand at my local co-op called Mom's Best that's like an organic off-brand thing. I like it, because although I normally don't care about organic stuff, there is enough scientific evidence that says high fructose corn syrup is reeeally bad for us. Not only do their cheerios and cinnamon toast crunch not use hfcs, but they are localish (based in Northfield, MN, same as Malt-o-Meal, a town I could never live in as the pervasive scent of deliciousness from the factories would make me hungry 24/7).

The Kashi cereals I've bought in the past aren't fortified with vitamins/minerals that I could see, so I've stopped buying. Also, Kashi likes to use palm oil in some of their products, which is highly saturated and horrible for your health.

I grew up on cereals too but have quit eating them since they are now made from Genetically Modfied Grains and most contain High Fructose Corn Syrup or both. They now know that Fructose causes cancer to grow faster than other sugars. Studies of mice raised on GMO's have shown by the 3rd generation, the mice are having fewer babies than the control group not living on GMO's. And then they found that these mice fed GMO grains start growing hair inside their mouths. That did it for me. I only buy organic cereals now for my 16 year old. Too bad the greedy cereal companies had to ruin a good thing. I used to fill my bowl with milk first; then keep refilling with cereal until the milk was gone!

OMG I love cereal too! I was raised on it, and got into the "Kamikaze" thing early on. Now in my late 40's, I keep 6-10 different kinds of cereal in the cupboard, and eat a bowl of mix almost every morning. My favorites are Peanut Butter Bumpers, Raisin Nut Bran, Quaker Granola (NO RAISINS!), and... almost everything else. Make no mistake, the layering of the cereal in the bowl is of paramount importance! Floating stuff on bottom, sinking stuff on top, interspersing round shapes with spiky/flaky stuff so they can kinda 'spoon' in the bowl. Then as I dig in (always starting at one side and 'shaving' my way across), the "cereal wars" of the floating stuff working to the top and the sinking stuff working is always a simple morning delight.

As long as you use the "sugar bomb" stuff sparingly, it's delicious, healthy, and nutritious. Cereal Rocks!

I have a large glass dispenser (commercial type) that sits on my kitchen counter and mix different cereals in it. I always look for cereals on sale and add that to a heathy type of cereal with no sugar in it. By adding Fruit Loops or Apple Jacks or whatever you get different cereals all the time and you don't need to look for something to add variety to your meals. Also try adding Fruit Loops to Rice Crispy Squares, Adds colour and taste to an old regular.

I'll take it a step farther: how about stuff MADE with cereal...rice krispy treats, chex party mix (try the lazy version with just butter and onion soup mix added!), chex coated in chocolate/PB mixture and topped with powdered sugar. And last, but certainly not least, the old NE standard of Grape Nut custard. That is sooooo yummy! And, you can justify eating it for breakfast (hey, it has cereal, eggs, milk!).

Favs: Corn Pops, Capn Crunch PB, Raisin Bran Crunch, frosted miniwheats, Kashi Go Lean Crunch, Frosted Flakes, Quaker Cinnamon Oat Squares, Grape Nuts, Fruit Harvest...

    Wow...talk about primal comfort food!
For me its shredded wheat, the original (big biscuit) kind, drenched with hot milk, a drizzle of real maple syrup and a sprinkling of fresh grated cinnamon. Nothing better in the entire world for a brisk fall breakfast.
Brings back childhood memories of visiting my great grandmother.

Corn chex, rice chex, plain cheerios, reese's peanut butter puffs, cap'n crunch, apple jacks, corn pops, oat squares – now those could sustain me for a lifetime. Throw in the occasional corn flakes/special K, Lucky Charms, and foot loops, and I am a happy camper.

Drives people nuts when I bring ziplock baggies of cereal to snack on at work. Or, bring a box to bed with me to munch on while I read.

My kids love it because I change out the cereals weekly so they never get bored with one kind. And I'm fine with cereal for dinner.

For all you cereal killa's out there...you must try Kellogg's Cinnabon Cereal. It is the BEST! My son and I eat the whole box; stays crispy, but I let mine sit to get soggy (glad to hear other soggist out there). My husband has stated many times that it seems that Cinnabon must have put something very addictive into the cereal- my son and I buy seveal boxes at a time!

YES!! Cinnabon is the best! Not all stores around here carry it, sadly. It beats every other cinnamon-flavored cereal and I've tried them all.

I gave up ice cream late at night and have a bowl of cereal (any kind if it's crunchy) with 1% milk instead. Satisfies all those ice cream cravings...Cocoa Krispies works well in this situation! LOL!

Well no wonder people/americans are fat. Cereal is nothing but a high GI food that will leave you hungry an hour later. There's no nutritional benefit to eating cereal except to maybe pancakes or nothing at all.

When was the last time you heard of a cover model from a magazine say they got their body from eating coco puffs? It doesn't happen. Give up the cereal lardies.

Buc Wheats and Corn Bran were the BEST. Now, Rice Chex is the best available locally. Too bad the boxes get smaller every year.

Best value if you're trying to eat healthy? Grape Nuts with skim milk and a pinch of sugar. (I have to let it sit for a few minutes to get a little soggy.) Yeah, Total has more vitamins, but Grape Nuts is a lot cheaper.

He even put his name on a box or two so we wouldn't eat it – Trix is his favorite. He's 82 now - pantry still stocked with the best ones. Now in my home, we don't care if there's milk or not. We have huge cups we use, or what we call our Jethro Bowls. Fill 'em twice, and you got yourself a happy tummy. Lucky Charms, Corn Pops, Frosted Mini Wheats, Special K with Berries plus many many more. Don't care if they're name brand or generic...we'll eat it! We've been known to have 20 boxes in the pantry!

Same here! I don't like milk, so I always eat my cereal dry. Each morning I have Post Selects cereal and a glass of OJ.

A trick for cheap cereal. Normally Post Selects is around $4/box. Albertson's will put it on sale a couple times a year and when you buy 3 or more, you get a great coupon for money off your next purchase. Also, Post will have coupons in the Sunday papers. When you combine the sale, the in-store coupon, plus the Post coupons, you can get the cereal for 50 cents a box instead of $4! Also, if you're really lucky, it'll be at the same time Albertson's has their coupon match, which puts them down to 25 cents a box. Makes the boxes way less than even the "bag brands." And since the cereal stays good for so long, I stock up each time they go on sale and put them away in my walk-in pantry. My friends all make fun of me when they see three shelves stocked full of cereal! But, when it goes on that type of sale, it's hard to pass it up.

The bottom line is I love cereal and can not live without it just like it can not live without me making all that money from me buying it so much.

I felt the need to reply because at work I am known as The Cereal Killer because of my love of the Holy Bowl of greatness that it is. I tend to mix three or four cereals into a large bowl every morning. I look forward to break everyday because I know I will have at least a good start to my day. I <3 cereal.

Had a bowl last night. Have a bowl every Sunday night, catching up on DVR and getting ready for the work week.
