CNN Correspondent Karl Penhaul is getting a first-hand look at the food being delivered to the Chilean miners trapped 2,300 feet below ground. He tells Eatocracy that the unique challenge has been in finding items that will fit down - and survive the journey through - the 4-inch tube that's currently the 33 miners' only link to the surface.

Penhaul will be speaking with the team in charge of preparing the food, but in the meantime, he reports that the the menu thus far consists of:

– Tea bags, herbal infusions and thermos flasks of hot water
– For breakfast, an energy shake containing protein and carbohydrates
– Yogurt and cereal shake for a late-morning snack
– Ham sandwich for lunch
– Another yogurt and cereal shake and a kiwi fruit to help digestion at mid-afternoon
– Jam sandwiches for evening meal
– About 5 liters of water per man per day
– Total of about 2,000 calories per day

Lunchtime poll – gluten-free, sugar-free and beyond

The darndest things show up in our inbox - cookie diets, unlikely celeb cookbooks (Mario Lopez? Was the world really screaming out for that?), and vodka flavors we wouldn't wish upon our worst landlords. One that stuck out like a sore stomach in the past short while was a subject line touting gluten-free as the "trendy" new diet.

While yes, some folks are opting in for the sake of quick slenderizing, most of the people we know who adhere to the diet do so to avoid minor inconveniences like, oh, say, crippling stomach pain, auto-immune issues and hospital visits due to allergic reactions and intolerance issues. Ain't just a trend with them; unfortunately, it's a way of life.

Nine generations of Lairds have had a hand in crafting the family's signature spirit, but the company couldn't survive for 200 years on apple jack brandy alone.

See how the family weathered Prohibition (who doesn't love a "medicinal" dispensation?) and the disco era to become one of America's most enduring brands.

We like ours in a Jack Rose cocktail. It picks up a pink tint from a dollop of grenadine, but make no mistake - this rose packs a thorny sting.

Breakfast buffet

While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday and the most delicious finds on TV.

Kill two birds with one stone: hit the trails on August 31 to honor National Trail Mix Day and Eat Outside Day. Even if those trails look an awful lot like concrete sidewalks and the picnic table is more reminiscent of a fire escape, it's the thought that counts.

It is the last day of August, after all, so we suggest dining al fresco while you can. (The name's Downer. Debbie Downer.)

And if someone asks you to pass the gorp, they aren't speaking Klingon - it's a trail mix acronym for "granola, oats, raisins and peanuts" or "good old raisins and peanuts."

What's on TV?
